00:00What will happen over the course of the next 66 laps is the Spanish Grand Prix in 2022.
00:06It's lights out and away we go and it's a fairly even start. Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen
00:11but Verstappen is now coming back and Leclerc who moves over to cut him off. Carlos Sainz has
00:16already been parked by George Russell. Sergio Perez on the inside down into turn one. Charles
00:20Leclerc has the lead from Verstappen. George Russell gets tagged but manages to stay on the track.
00:25Sergio Perez just clipping his rear tires and there's Lewis Hamilton on the inside
00:30battling away with Carlos Sainz. Does the inside work out well for the Mercedes as we head down towards turn four?
00:35No, Sainz is ahead there of Hamilton and now coming round the outside and making contact.
00:40It's Kevin Magnussen and Magnussen goes off to the gravel in the Haas. Lewis Hamilton survives
00:46but has he got damage on his Mercedes? He's going very very slowly around turn five.
00:52Leclerc was a little bit to the right-hand side of his start box actually but went across and covered
00:57off Verstappen immediately and now Sainz is sort of wrong-footed. He's now lost a place to Perez
01:04and at this point Lewis Hamilton comes up and George Russell and Perez getting together there as well.
01:10There's the contact in front of him and now Lewis is on our right-hand side as well.
01:16So Lewis, a little bit of understeer on the corner.
01:20Got a bit hit.
01:22I think the students are going to say that's a racing incident at the start of a Grand Prix.
01:27Kevin is perfectly within his rights to try to go around the outside.
01:31Lewis just grabbed me. He knew what he was doing.
01:34And into the gravel goes Carlos Sainz and there'll be no cheers for that.
01:41He's down in sixth place and at turn four Carlos Sainz has had a moment, rejoins the racetrack
01:47but he has lost places as he tumbles down the order and not for the first time this season.
01:51Let's have a look and see what happens here.
01:56It's fun on his own.
01:57That's very similar, much higher speed to what happened to Leclerc in the first part of Q3 yesterday.
02:04Like a pendulum effect.
02:09And into the gravel goes Max Verstappen.
02:12Verstappen at turn four now passed by Russell and his teammate Perez.
02:16Verstappen was running in second place.
02:19Becomes the second car in this race to just go off at turn four running on its own.
02:25I'm assuming it's going to be a carbon copy of what happened.
02:31Yeah, just a bit lazy slide.
02:34Yeah.
02:36Max, info.
02:38DRS flat did not open last lap.
02:41Keep trying.
02:42Okay, Max, just so you're aware DRS did work on the lap.
02:47So, whatever is going on is an intermittent problem, it seems, on Max Verstappen's Red Bull.
02:55What's Max Verstappen going to do here?
02:56DRS activated, extra pace, accelerating, into turn one.
03:02Max Verstappen, is he past George Russell?
03:04George Russell squeezes through.
03:06On the inside, Verstappen tries to fight him back.
03:08Now into turn three, Russell ahead by half a car length.
03:12Going round the outside of turn three, Verstappen leaves the track.
03:15Russell still ahead on the run down into turn four.
03:18We've not seen too much between these two in terms of attack and defence before.
03:22But I am one that wants to see much, much more.
03:25Charles Leclerc must wonder where everybody got to this afternoon.
03:29But that's a Ferrari going very slowly.
03:31That's Charles Leclerc.
03:32And that's Charles Leclerc.
03:33Going very slowly.
03:34No!
03:35No!
03:36No!
03:38No!
03:38What happened?
03:39What happened?
03:39Lost power.
03:41A loss of power, a race that was going absolutely splendidly for him.
03:46And he is out of the race.
03:48George Russell crosses the line.
03:51Max Verstappen's DRS is working.
03:53This is now a battle for the lead.
03:55And George Russell stays in the lead.
03:58Meanwhile, Lance Stroll takes a spin after making contact with Pierre Gasly.
04:03As Max Verstappen now comes into the pit.
04:06George Russell will be defending from Sergio Perez.
04:09As Verstappen now makes his second stop of the race.
04:13And this is the closest yet Perez has been.
04:15Uh, yes it is.
04:17And he's only got a couple of car lengths as George Russell moves over to the inside.
04:20And now Sergio Perez manages to clear that Mercedes and make his way into the lead of this race.
04:26Patrick Bottas, Ferrari power units, has Max Verstappen right behind him.
04:32Verstappen just pitted onto the soft compound tire.
04:35Absolutely flying here, trying to go around the outside at turn 12.
04:39Don't see very many overtakes there.
04:42Verstappen had so much grip coming out of turn 11.
04:45Beautiful move.
04:46And George Russell pits.
04:49So he's not going to get the chance to go around Max Verstappen.
04:52Mercedes left it until right at the last moment.
04:54Before they could bring George Russell in and, well,
04:57basically avoid any unnecessary wheel-to-wheel action and give him his second pit stop.
05:02Okay, you want a different strategy to Max.
05:08If he's quicker, he'll be left through.
05:10That's very unfair, but okay.
05:14Yeah, he's heading through now.
05:16Yeah, that was the point I was making.
05:17You know, he didn't spin off the track.
05:20You know, Max's tyres are six laps younger.
05:23Picking it.
05:25Sainz is going to be first to have a go then at Valtteri Bottas.
05:27Gets past him very nicely, going into turn one.
05:30Hamilton has to slot behind the Alfa Romeo.
05:32Just back out a little bit, going into turn two.
05:35Hamilton now passes his chances to go around the outside at turn three and does so.
05:39Hamilton moves up the fifth.
05:40Carlos Sainz moves up into fourth place.
05:45Carlos Sainz just trying to break the toe somewhat as they pass the main grandstand,
05:50but he's not broken it enough as Lewis Hamilton
05:52moves to the outside of the track and then swoops around in front of Carlos Sainz and up into fourth place.
05:59So we'll do as much lift and coast as possible.
06:00This is a DNF risk.
06:02So Lewis, if we have to give up the place, then we'll have to do that.
06:05So avoid full load.
06:06This is a DNF risk.
06:08And Lewis then, look at this.
06:11He's a sitting duck down the straight.
06:12Carlos Sainz is all over him.
06:16Listen to that cheer.
06:17It has been very hot in the cockpit at times.
06:21The celebrations though will very much be welcomed by Max Verstappen and Red Bull,
06:27as Verstappen wins the Spanish Grand Prix.
06:30And his teammate Sergio Perez will come home to claim second place and the fastest lap.
06:36It's a one-two for Red Bull.
06:38Russell takes his second podium place of the season, finishes third for Mercedes.
06:44Wow.
06:46Sometimes you've got to do it the hard way.
06:47Hard up, Max.
06:49Not an easy start to the race, but we turn it around at the end.
06:52So, yeah, very good job also for the team.
06:55So the weekend where Max Verstappen wins for a 24th time and takes the lead, Martin Brundle,
07:01of the championship.
07:02And a championship lead after the Australian Grand Prix was, what, 46 points for Charles Leclerc?
07:08How quickly things have changed.
07:10The reliability issue today has really turned the championship around.
07:14So Verstappen leads by six points and Red Bull lead by 26 points over Ferrari and the constructors.
