00:00One of the cardinal principles of faith, probably in most religions, is the
00:08concept of Mashiach. The concept of Mashiach is there will come a day when
00:17somebody will arrive on the world scene who will bring peace to the world,
00:25goodness to the world, put an end to all war and to all suffering, and create a
00:32utopian life on earth. This individual is going to pick up where King Solomon left
00:45off. In other words, he is a descendant of King David. King David was given the
00:53crown in Jewish life. So the royal family in Judaism is the family of
01:02David through his son Solomon and Mashiach will be a descendant of David and
01:08Solomon. This individual will be very effective, very successful in influencing
01:17the world for the good. But that role, influencing the world for the good, is
01:28there only one person in all of history that does that? There will be only one
01:34person in the world who influences everyone in the world towards goodness.
01:40But on a smaller scale, there are people in history who created so much goodness for so
01:49many people that they earned the title of a regional Mashiach. Abraham had a huge effect on
02:03Jewish morality, not only on Jewish morality, but on Persian morality. You could say they were the Mashiach of
02:26Mashiach of their time, of their location. So anyone who influences the world towards the better is acting like a Mashiach.
02:41And it takes many before we can get to the ultimate Mashiach. And that's why Mashiach is not here because we haven't
02:56accumulated enough little influences to get the world ready for the big influence. So every generation has had its Mashiach.
03:08Rambam in his time, Rabbi Akiva in his time, certainly Moses. Can Moses be described as a Mashiach?
03:23I don't know. First of all, he brought the Jews out of Egypt and he enlightened them with Torah. Huge!
03:38In fact, Rambam describes Moshe as the first Mashiach who will also be the final Mashiach.
03:50Now, in every generation, the Mashiach of that generation is a potential world-class Mashiach. So in every generation, there was a distinct possibility that the Mashiach, the ultimate Mashiach would arrive at that time. And it would be the Mashiach of that generation.
04:15But if the time was not right, and the generation was not yet deserving, then the Mashiach of the generation made his contribution, brought the world a giant step closer, but it's not the Mashiach yet.
04:36That's why there can be the Mashiach. That's why there can be the Mashiach. That's why there can be so much confusion.
04:42Or, well, it looks like confusion anyway.
04:46Rabbi Akiva was convinced that Bar Kochba was Mashiach.
04:50Absolutely.
04:52And he convinced everybody else.
04:54But it didn't happen.
04:58The world did not come to a peaceful coexistence.
05:04People did not become truly, permanently better, although there was a vast improvement which made it look like he was Mashiach.
05:18So he was, of course, the Mashiach of his generation.
05:23But sadly, he was not the Mashiach.
05:30So in Hebrew terminology, when we say Mashiach, we're not necessarily speaking about that descendant of King David who is going to bring the world to its perfection.
05:42If we're talking about him, it would be described as Melech HaMashiach, the King who is anointed.
05:53Before I continue with my monologue, where I do all the talking, I want to invite you to a VIP session, a Zoom session, in which we get together to actually have a conversation
06:07and discuss all things Jewish, all things holy, all things healthy.
06:13So click on the link below and join us where we can have a two-way conversation.
06:20But anybody who serves God properly can be described as anointed.
06:24Every king in Israel throughout history was an anointed.
06:30Every high priest was anointed.
06:33So Mashiach literally means anointed, sanctified by being anointed with holy oil.
06:46So that gives you a position of leadership and of prominence.
06:50But there's only one King Mashiach, and he has not come yet.
06:58So the Rebbe mentioned many times.
07:03There is Mashiach.
07:06There is the Mashiach of every generation.
07:11There is the personal Mashiach, your mentor, your teacher, influencer, inspirer.
07:20Who took you out of your exile?
07:24Who introduced you to the world of truth and godliness?
07:29That's your personal Mashiach.
07:32So you have the very personal Mashiach.
07:35You have the communal Mashiach of the generation.
07:39And then you have the great Mashiach.
07:44The Rebbe took it down another step.
07:47In each of us, there's an element of Mashiach.
07:52By creating us, God, in effect, anoints us to be a Mashiach.
08:00To have an influence on the world, to bring the world closer to godliness, which is what Mashiach does.
08:12So the Rebbe urged us to find the Mashiach within ourselves.
08:23Or in different words, the Rebbe would not permit individual private citizenship.
08:35No one is a private citizen.
08:38Here's the example of a guy is digging a hole through the hull of a ship.
08:44And people say, what are you doing?
08:46He says, it's under my seat.
08:48It's none of your business.
08:52I'm an individual.
08:53I bought a ticket on this ship.
08:55This is my seat.
08:57So why would you care if I'm digging a hole or drilling a hole under my seat?
09:06And of course, the answer is, there's just one ship.
09:12The hole under your seat is going to affect everybody.
09:17So we can be petty in our thinking, parochial, nearsighted, myopic.
09:24It's just me.
09:27Or, we can be conscious of the big ship.
09:34So I can say, look, I'm no great Mashiach, so what I do doesn't really matter much.
09:41Yes, it does.
09:45Because the Mashiach is made up of tiny Mashiachs.
09:50And they have to come first.
09:53And then the great Mashiach can come.
09:56So the Rebbe took private citizens and turned them into universal representatives of God's interest in his creation.
10:08So no one is allowed to be a private citizen.
10:13What you do affects the world.
10:16Don't think petty.
10:19A person commits a sin.
10:24It had a negative effect on the world.
10:27And all you care about is whether you're going to suffer consequences.
10:31That's petty.
10:32And so the focus of, will I go to heaven?
10:37Will I go to hell?
10:38Will I be deserving?
10:40Will I be guilty?
10:41That's so petty.
10:43Now, there was a time when life was petty.
10:48It was the reality.
10:50You were born in a certain town.
10:54You're going to live your life in that town.
10:56You're going to die in that town.
10:58If your father was a butcher, you're going to be a butcher.
11:00If your father was a cobbler, you're going to be a cobbler.
11:03Life was tiny.
11:05But with time, life got bigger.
11:10When in the past, in history, was one person able to communicate with millions?
11:20In real time.
11:24If you can communicate with millions, it means you affect millions.
11:29So now, today, being petty is completely unacceptable.
11:37Unjustified.
11:40So, when a person thinks, should I sin or should I not sin?
11:45Don't think petty.
11:49It's not just about you.
11:52It's about the world.
11:54So, it's not, am I going to sin or am I not going to sin?
11:58Are you going to be part of the solution for the world or part of the world's problem?
12:04It's a much bigger question.
12:07So, your own faith now fades into insignificance.
12:14Will you go to heaven or will you go to hell?
12:17Really, is that the big problem?
12:19Is that the big question?
12:22There are eight billion people in the world that you're affecting and you're just worried about yourself?
12:28How can you be like that?
12:29How can you be like that?
12:32So, what used to be great virtue, a person introverted, devoted to self-improvement?
12:45When you can improve the entire world and you choose to improve only yourself, how narcissistic can we get?
13:02And so, the Rebbe setting the tone for our generation said, get out of your exile.
13:11Exile means you're restricted, you're limited, you have no authority, you're a stranger in a strange land.
13:20No, no, no.
13:21Get out of that mentality.
13:24The world is sensitive to what you do, say and think.
13:31So, what will you do for the world?
13:34Positive thought, positive word, positive action.
13:39You've changed the world for the better.
13:42Negative thought?
13:45So, let's think big.
13:49That prepares us for the big changes that Mashiach, the Mashiach will bring.
