Bavarian fairy tale castles and French Carnac Megaliths among new UNESCO World Heritage sites

UNESCO has reviewed the applications of several new World Heritage sites, adding the Carnac Megaliths in France, the Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the Minoan Palatial Centres in Crete, Greece to the list.

00:00Several new sites were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List on Friday.
00:07Among them were several European sites, including the famous fairytale castles of Bavaria's King Ludwig II,
00:13which have attracted millions of tourists for over 140 years.
00:18The new sites also included ancient structures, such as the megalithic Carnac stones in France
00:23and the Minoan palatial centers on the Greek island of Crete.
00:27Both date from several thousand years BC.
00:31Although the World Heritage title does not bring any financial support,
00:35it does ensure further international attention and cultural prestige.
00:40At 60 listed sites, Italy has the most of any country.
00:45Some examples include the archaeological site of Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast.
00:50Other well-known sites across the world are the Great Wall of China,
00:54Egypt's Pyramids of Giza and the Taj Mahal in India.
