00:00The largest volcano in our universe isn't on Earth, it's on Mars.

00:03Imagine you dig a hole straight down from the top.

00:05It's three times taller than Mount Everest, and its base is about the length of Portugal.

00:09Then you're digging through Mars' crust.

00:10Scientists recently discovered huge amounts of liquid water hiding in this crust.

00:14But it's too deep for a Mars colony to get to, for now.

00:17After about 50 kilometers, you'd hit Mars' mantle.

00:19It's cooler than Earth's and less active.

00:21We don't think Mars has much volcanic activity, but it seems like it used to.

00:25Keep digging, and finally you'd hit a dense molten metal core,

00:28about half the size of Earth's.

00:30We think it used to be flowing like Earth,

00:32so Mars likely had a magnetic field like we do.

00:35But the flow stopped, and we aren't totally sure why.

00:38And while our first estimates using seismic waves told us the core was fully liquid,

00:41new studies are suggesting that Mars might have an inner core that's solid, like on Earth.
