Transcript
00:00Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking at the most memorable cameos in James Gunn's Superman.
00:09Nothing but spoilers here.
00:11You have a role in this film? Do you want to share?
00:14I do. It's very close to home.
00:19Number 10. Sean Gunn as Maxwell Lord
00:21The director is known for casting his younger brother Sean, who appeared as Kraglin in the Guardians of the Galaxy films.
00:27Seems he's going soft.
00:30If he's so soft, why are you whispering for?
00:33In The Suicide Squad, Gunn had a dual role as Calendar Man and Weasel.
00:37Gunn will continue to play Weasel in the DCU, having already voiced the character in Creature Commandos along with G.I. Robot.
00:44G.I. Robot?
00:45Yes, Miss Nina?
00:46Would you like anything? Diesel? Um, some diesel fuel, please, for our robot friend?
00:52Yes, madam. Right away, madam.
00:54Beyond voiceovers, Gunn made his on-screen DCU debut in Superman as Maxwell Lord.
00:59The businessman backing the Justice Gang. Name-pending.
01:03If you saw Pedro Pascal's portrayal of Maxwell in Wonder Woman 1984, you know that his intentions with the Justice Gang probably aren't noble.
01:12Maybe we'll learn more about his plans in Peacemaker Season 2, where a few other names on this list might pop up.
01:18Can you tell us a little about your skills?
01:20I'm considered the finest marksman in the world.
01:22Number 9. Frank Grillo as Rick Flagg Sr.
01:25The elder Rick Flagg also made his DCU debut in Creature Commandos.
01:29What a bunch of clowns.
01:31Dangerous clowns.
01:32Superman brings the Task Force M leader into live action with Frank Grillo reprising his role.
01:37Although the Suicide Squad was technically part of the last DC Universe, James Gunn is carrying over a few plot points,
01:44like Peacemaker being responsible for the death of Flagg's son.
01:47I didn't mean to intimate anything about your son, Flagg.
01:51When he died in Corto Maltese, he died a hero.
01:54Having replaced Amanda Waller as Argus' director, Flagg will be targeting Peacemaker.
01:59For now, Flagg has to deal with Lex Luthor.
02:02He's one of several authority figures that Luthor seeks permission from in his pursuit to bring down Superman.
02:08Flagg knows a monster when he sees one, though, and his instincts about Luthor prove correct.
02:12They chose him! Let them die!
02:16Number 8. Isabella Merced as Kendra Saunders' Hawk Girl
02:20While this is Superman's movie, it makes room for a few other heroes with the Justice Gang.
02:25Of its three members, Eddie Gathegi's Mr. Terrific gets the most screen time.
02:30Hey! Quit messing around!
02:32I'm not messing around. I'm doing important stuff.
02:34As such, we're not sure he qualifies for cameo status.
02:38But Isabella Merced's Hawk Girl is used sparingly enough that we think she counts.
02:42Merced previously auditioned for the titular role in the unreleased Batgirl movie,
02:46which we'd still like to see, assuming Zaslav hasn't deleted it.
02:50That was the draw for me. I liked Batman more.
02:52Yeah.
02:53I love James and his work.
02:55In any case, Merced soars here as Hawk Girl, who provides backup during Superman's kaiju fight.
03:01Hawk Girl sits out Superman's rescue mission but resurfaces for the climax,
03:05revealing that she doesn't have a no-killing policy.
03:08You gotta crack a few corrupt politicians to make a freedom omelet.
03:11I'm a huge fan of the JLU, that series growing up.
03:16I loved the romance between Hawkgirl and Green Lantern.
03:21So, for me, I would love to see a romance blooming for her.
03:26Number 7. Anthony Kerrigan as Rex Mason Metamorpho
03:29Anthony Kerrigan of Barry fame is unrecognizable as Metamorpho,
03:33who shares a cell with Superman in Luther's Pocket Universe prison.
03:37Is this the first live-action Metamorpho?
03:40Uh, yeah, it is.
03:42With his son Joey held captive, Metamorpho reluctantly uses his powers to form Kryptonite.
03:47After Luther spills innocent blood, Metamorpho is compelled to help the Man of Steel,
03:52not only ditching the Kryptonite but giving him a supercharge.
03:55So much went into creating this look, and I'm so thankful for the practical effects.
04:04Rex and Joey are soon reunited with Sapphire Stagg, who Louisa Krause briefly appears as.
04:10No longer content hiding in the shadows,
04:12Metamorpho joins the climactic fight to save Boravia.
04:16He also joins the Justice Gang, which he thinks is a much cooler name than Hawkgirl gives it credit.
04:21Glad to see Kerrigan on the side of good after playing Victor Zsasz in another DC universe.
04:26Hello everyone.
04:29My name is Victor Zsasz.
04:32I'm sent here personally by Don Carmine Falcone himself
04:35on a matter of deep concern to him, so please be respectful.
04:39Number 6. Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Green Lantern
04:43The Justice Gang doesn't have an official leader,
04:46although Guy Gardner would likely claim that title if anyone asked.
04:49Nathan Fillion is another regular in Gunn's filmography.
04:53I'm up there on pals, I'm elbow, rubbing elbows with Superman,
04:56with Hawkgirl, I mean, it's, it's all the people, it's crazy good.
05:03While he essentially has an extended cameo in Superman,
05:07Fillion brings main character energy to the cocky Guy Gardner.
05:10It isn't Fillion's first time playing a Green Lantern,
05:13voicing Hal Jordan in several animated projects.
05:15You might want to give up now.
05:17Crap, it's the Justice League.
05:20While they took the same oath,
05:21Gardner and Jordan have more than a few differences.
05:24Gardner's bowl cut is only the beginning.
05:27Kyle Chandler will appear as Jordan in the upcoming Lantern's HBO series,
05:31which will also see Fillion return as Gardner.
05:34With Fillion dropping by the second season of Peacemaker as well,
05:37that 2011 film should be a distant memory soon enough.
05:41Also, you said that I suck.
05:45It is not funny.
05:47Number 5.
05:48Several familiar voices.
05:50You'd need Superman's hearing to pick up on every voice in the film.
05:54Michael Rosenbaum, himself a former Lex Luthor,
05:57can be heard as Raptor Guard number one.
05:59Most of the voiceover cameos are reserved for the Fortress of Solitude,
06:03where Superman's robots reside.
06:05Superman!
06:05Alan Tudyk leads the robots as number 4,
06:11who later names himself Gary.
06:13Was the name Sonny too obvious?
06:15In a mini Guardians of the Galaxy reunion,
06:18Tom Klementiev, a.k.a. Mantis,
06:20and Michael Rooker, a.k.a. Yondu,
06:22voice two other robots.
06:2314 fractured bones.
06:24Damage to bladder, kidney, large intestine, lungs.
06:28Just as number 12 is the new robot,
06:31Grace Chan is a newcomer,
06:33this being her first theatrical screen credit.
06:35An uncredited Jennifer Holland,
06:37Gunn's wife and best known to fans as Amelia Harcourt,
06:40also lent her voice to another robot toward the end.
06:43I've come to the conclusion you suffer from a particularly severe form
06:46of toxic masculinity.
06:49What?
06:50Number 4.
06:51Bradley Cooper and Angela Seraphion as Jor-El and Lara Lorvan.
06:55In one universe, Bradley Cooper is the voice of a talking raccoon.
06:59Here you go.
07:00Oh, I was just kidding about the leg.
07:02I just need these two things.
07:03What?
07:04No, I thought it'd be funny.
07:05Wasn't funny?
07:06In another, he's Superman's biological father.
07:09No matter the universe, Cooper has range like few others.
07:13The film doesn't spend too much time unpacking how Superman came to our planet,
07:17as we all know that by now.
07:18We're given a glimpse of the world Kal-El left behind
07:21through a recording from his parents.
07:22Cooper appears as Jor-El, while Angela Seraphion from Westworld plays Lara Lorvan.
07:28Not much of a ride on you.
07:30I'll give you a discount.
07:32No offense, but I'd rather earn a woman's affection than pay for it.
07:36Standing out from other versions,
07:38we actually hear Kal-El's parents speak in Kryptonese.
07:41When translated, it seems that the House of El sent their son to Earth to be its protector.
07:46After Lex Luthor fully deciphers the message,
07:48Superman's perception of his Kryptonian parents is forever changed.
07:52No matter what you do to me, Luthor,
07:54your plans will work.
07:58Number 3.
07:59John Cena as Christopher Smith, Peacemaker.
08:02Considering how many of these characters will be in Peacemaker Season 2,
08:06it only makes sense for Chris Smith himself to make a cameo.
08:09Ready for the next adventure, pal?
08:11John Cena has a short yet humorous appearance as Peacemaker,
08:14who visits a Tucker Carlson-esque new program.
08:17Honestly, if superheroes were real,
08:20Peacemaker would arguably be the most well-equipped for a conservative talk show.
08:24As we've seen before,
08:25Peacemaker will believe anything he reads about Superman on Google.
08:28Where do you get this nonsense?
08:32Google.
08:32Well, it's not true.
08:34You know more than Google?
08:35Well, congratulations!
08:36He's more than likely reading one of the many lies that Lex Luthor's monkey bots have spread across the web.
08:42True or false,
08:43Peacemaker never misses an opportunity to crap on Supes,
08:46especially when given a televised audience.
08:49They both wear star-spangled colors,
08:51but these two have very different definitions of America.
08:54The James Gunn quote that I always use,
08:57a douchey, bro-y Captain America.
08:59Start there.
09:01Be that guy.
09:02And then begin to work forward on anything else.
09:05Number 2.
09:06Millie Alcock as Kara Zor-El, Supergirl
09:08When asked about his dog,
09:10Superman says he's more like Crypto's caretaker.
09:13You have a dog?
09:14Near the end,
09:15we're introduced to Crypto's true owner,
09:18Kara Zor-El,
09:19a.k.a. Supergirl.
09:20The cousins already have an established relationship in this continuity,
09:23with Kal-El being the clean-cut defender of humanity
09:26and Kara being the younger, more reckless hero
09:28who's more interested in partying on other planets.
09:31I just hope they like her.
09:33I don't know,
09:33I think that, like,
09:34it's really exciting
09:35and we haven't really had a stand-alone Supergirl film in a long time,
09:40so I just hope that they accept her in the DC family.
09:44Whereas some more recent versions of Supergirl
09:46have been more like a role model,
09:48Millie Alcock from House of the Dragon
09:49plays the character with the spirit of an irresponsible college student.
09:52Now we know where Crypto gets his mischievous tendencies from.
09:56We guess this means that we'll see more of the Superdog
09:58when Alcock takes center stage in next year's solo Supergirl film.
10:02What can we say about Supergirl,
10:04Woman of Tomorrow?
10:05We can say that I am Supergo.

10:21Number 1. Will Reeve as News Reporter
10:26Initially, this film was going to be titled Superman Legacy.
10:30It's about this pure, good, beautiful guy
10:35who is trying to get by in a world that isn't those things.
10:41And he just happens to have superpowers.
10:43Although the second word was ultimately dropped,
10:46James Gunn pays tribute to the legends
10:47who paved the way for his version of Superman.
10:49At the Daily Planet, you can spot Michael and James Larson,
10:53the grandsons of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel.
10:56Christopher Reeve brought Superman out of the comics,
10:59making us believe a man can fly.
11:01Easy, miss. I've got you.
11:03You've got me? Who's got you?
11:06Although Reeve passed away in 2004,
11:09his son Will appears in the film as a news reporter.
11:12This is fitting in more ways than one.
11:14Not only is Will Reeve an ABC News correspondent in real life,
11:17but his dad played the quintessential mild-mannered reporter in Clark Kent.
11:22Like Clark, this cameo is easy to overlook,
11:25but nothing short of super.
11:26But it was a really nice homage to my family's connection
11:30to this franchise and to the role.
11:32Did you catch any other cameos?
11:34Let us know in the comments.
11:36No need to thank us, sir, as we will not appreciate it.
11:39We have no consciousness whatsoever.
