00:00this is Jay Carper with the conclusion to a Sabbath to Yahweh in parts one through
00:08four of this series we talked about what is the Sabbath why is the Sabbath important who
00:15the Sabbath is for and when is the Sabbath in this video let's bring it all together
00:21this is from Jeremiah 16 verse 19 O Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh my strength and my stronghold my refuge in the day
00:33of trouble to you shall the nations come from the ends of the earth and say our fathers have
00:38inherited nothing but lies worthless things in which there is no profit we have all inherited
00:46lies everyone has inherited false doctrines misunderstandings in these things aren't
00:53necessarily deliberate lies for the most part our theologians our early church fathers these people
01:00taught and wrote what they really believed they weren't trying to deceive anyone nonetheless they
01:07inherited lies from their fathers and those lies were inevitably incorporated into the theology
01:13the doctrines that they passed down to us our job is to filter through the things that we were taught
01:21and compare them with scripture and find out what's false and what's true and to hold on to what's true
01:28but only God has the truth fortunately he's written it down for us through his prophets through the words
01:37of Yeshua through his disciples and apostles he gave us the truth about himself about salvation about what
01:46he expects from us all of our traditions in our doctrinal creeds these things can be helpful but they can also
01:55muddy the waters they put complex ideas into nice neat packages and that's great for helping us to
02:03understand those ideas but these nice neat packages can also deceive us into thinking that that's all there
02:10is that the simplicity of this package is the complexity of the truth but those traditions are not God's law
02:20doctrinal creeds are not the scriptures
02:23isaiah 8 20 says to the law and to the testimony if they speak not according to this word it is because
02:33there is no light in them this is a little bit hyperbolic everybody speaks falsehoods everybody believes
02:41things that are wrong that doesn't mean there's no light at all in us but it does mean that the light
02:48that comes from any teacher needs to be weighed against scripture the final measure of all doctrine
02:54is the bible you've heard of the term of the canon or canonical scriptures the word canon literally means
03:04a measuring rod and scripture is the rod by which we measure all other truths every doctrine must be
03:12evaluated for its scriptural support and all doctrines that don't align with the written word are false and
03:20they must be set aside but it's also important to remember that all truths are not found in scripture
03:29all of the most important truths are certainly there but there are a lot of things about the universe
03:34that God didn't explicitly reveal in scripture but just because something is not explicitly spelled out
03:42doesn't mean that it's not true on the other hand it also doesn't mean that it is true always go
03:49back to scripture and weigh every doctrine and remember that Jesus is the final arbiter of truth
03:55and what scripture means if you're not sure about how to apply one of God's commandments go back and
04:03look at the stories in the teachings of Jesus how do we keep the sabbath how did he do it he did it right
04:10so let's do it like he did it i found this great quote from christian teacher charles spurgeon
04:17a sacred regard to the authority of God ought to lead us to reject an error however old sanctioned by
04:23whatever authority or however generally practiced i think that is a great rule to follow and it's
04:30underlined by the scriptures that i just read to you in this series a sabbath to yahweh we talked about
04:38how the sabbath is a day of rest healing and restoration it's a community appointment with
04:43god in his honor and in emulation of him because we are images of him the sabbath is also a sign of
04:52god's relationship with his people of our faith in him and love for him if we have faith in god we will
04:58believe his promises and we will keep his commandments the weekly sabbath is for all of god's faithful jew and
05:07gentile or should i say former gentile the sabbath was established at creation and commanded to the
05:15israelites before they even reach sinai even if you believe that the sinai covenant was set aside in
05:22favor of the new covenant that doesn't mean that you shouldn't keep the sabbath the sabbath predates
05:28the sinai covenant and it is a separate covenant all on its own the sabbath today is the same day that
05:36we call saturday the seventh day of the week it begins at sunset on friday and ends at sunset on
05:43saturday and it has no connection whatsoever to the phases of the moon the day of the sabbath has not
05:52been changed and it is not subject to either majority vote or individual preferences the early church fathers
06:00might have declared that the sabbath moved to sunday but they didn't have that authority not even god
06:07has the authority to cancel his own covenants who is god is he a man that he should lie
06:15jesus told us if you love me you will keep my commandments if you love jesus you will love the
06:23father and you'll love your neighbor jesus and john both told us this if we love god we will keep his
06:31commandments and this is because the greatest commandment of all love the lord your god with
06:37all your heart with all your soul with all your might logically extends into the second commandment
06:43you will love your neighbor as yourself because your neighbor bears the image of god just like you do
06:50and every single commandment that god gave demonstrates love for him and love for your neighbor the great
06:58commandment creates all the other commandments they are all necessary in order to fulfill love for god
07:06and love for your neighbor if you love god and your neighbor you'll keep the sabbath so keep the sabbath not
07:15for the sake of the sabbath itself but for the sake of the relationships for which it was created
07:23this is jay carper from americantorah.com and commonsensebiblestudy.com
07:29love god love your neighbor and keep the sabbath
