00:00This is Jay Carper, and I'm continuing the series of A Sabbath to Yahweh, Part 2, Why Does the Sabbath Matter?
00:10In previous videos, I talked about how the Sabbath matters because it shows love and honor for God,
00:17how it matters because it's good for you, and how it matters because it's good for your whole community.
00:22In this video, I'm going to talk about why the Sabbath matters because it's all about God's relationship with His people.
00:32This is from Exodus chapter 31, verses 16 and 17.
00:52The seventh-day Sabbath is a separate covenant all on its own, not part of the covenant at Sinai or the covenant with Abraham.
01:03The weekly Sabbath is a covenant between God and His people Israel that He made heaven and earth.
01:11It's an acknowledgment of God's role as the Creator and Judge of the whole universe.
01:16The weekly Sabbath is also one of the first signs of Israel's submission after they left Egypt.
01:24After they crossed the Red Sea, keeping the Sabbath was the very first commandment that God gave Israel,
01:31and He gave it as a test to see whether He would keep the rest of His commandments.
01:35In this passage, God also says that keeping the Sabbath is an acknowledgment of how He rested on the seventh day and was refreshed.
01:43But these are benefits that we get from keeping the Sabbath.
01:48So the seventh-day Sabbath, this covenant is also in agreement that we are to be a reflection of God in the world.
01:57We are supposed to emulate His behavior and rest on the seventh day.
02:03Leviticus 19.3 says,
02:05God is our Heavenly Father, and in this verse, God connects honoring your mother and father with honoring Him by keeping the Sabbath.
02:24We are to keep the Sabbath, because He is our Father, and He told us to.
02:30Fathers love their children.
02:32They create rules for their household, not to be arbitrary, not just to have rules,
02:38but because those rules are good for the people in the household.
02:42Fathers make rules for their children, because those rules are in the best interests of their children.
02:48Children obey their father's rules, because they honor their father.
02:55But Yahweh isn't just our Heavenly Father.
02:58He is our God.
02:59He is our Creator.
03:01You shall keep my Sabbaths, He says, because I, Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh, are your God.
03:08And if He is our God, our Creator, our Lawgiver, then we do what He says.
03:14Leviticus 26, verses 1-2 says,
03:20You shall not make idols for yourselves, for I am Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh, your God.
03:25You shall keep my Sabbaths and reverence my sanctuary.
03:29I am Yod-Heh-Vav-Heh.
03:32God connects keeping the Sabbath with not making idols.
03:37Refusing to keep the Sabbath is therefore tantamount to idolatry.
03:41We reverence God's sanctuary by avoiding the sanctuary of idols.
03:48But the Sabbath is a sanctuary in time.
03:52The tabernacle is a place that we go to, to be with God, to worship Him in the ways that He dictated.
03:58The seventh-day Sabbath is a time set apart for God's purposes.
04:04We set aside that day to worship God in the ways that He dictated, just like His physical sanctuary.
04:11The Sabbath was created for mankind, but it's about our relationship with God.
04:20It's a lot like marriage in that way.
04:23Marriage is a reflection of our relationship with God.
04:26But marriage was created for mankind.
04:30Remember what Jesus said about marriage.
04:33What God has joined together, let no man separate.
04:36But God set apart the Sabbath.
04:39He separated it from other days.
04:42And if we're not allowed to separate what God has joined,
04:46why do we think that we should join what God has separated?
04:50He told us over and over to keep the Sabbath day separate.
04:55And that's what we should do.
04:56So, why does the Sabbath matter?
05:02The weekly Sabbath matters because it shows love for Yahweh your God.
05:08Because it's good for you.
05:11Because it shows love for your neighbor as yourself.
05:15And because it's a covenant dealing with God's relationship with His people.
05:21The seventh-day Sabbath matters to God.
05:24And it should matter to you and me too.
05:26This is Jay Carper from americantorah.com and commonsensebiblestudy.com.
05:34Stick with me because we're not done talking about the Sabbath yet.
05:39In our next set of videos, we're going into part three.
05:43Who is the Sabbath for?
05:45If you think the Sabbath is only for the Jews,
05:47or you think that Christians have a separate Sabbath,
05:51you really need to listen to these next videos.
05:53I hope to get why you guys will listen to these next videos.
06:08I'm not sure to get forward to the Sabbath yet.
06:10Also, We're going into part three weeks.
06:11We're going into one of the Sabbath.
06:13I do not know.
06:13This is certainly not a great gospel.
06:14We'll see you guys next time.
06:16Even if you're willing to study the Sabbath,
06:17you do not count a minute to end.
06:19As you know, let's see us next week.
