This is the first time we’ve ever caught this deep sea creature on camera... and it’s a BABY.

It’s so cute! It’s a colossal squid. The baby is only about a third of a meter long but when it’s full grown it’ll be 7 meters.

In the footage, you can see its organs inside its transparent body. But the red color on its arms tell us that it can likely switch between being transparent and opaque…

This first glimpse of the colossal squid in its natural habitat was captured by scientists onboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute research vessel Falkor using a remotely operated deep sea vehicle - tech that’s gotten a lot better in recent years.

We hope it will teach us about how amazing creatures like this really behave in the wild.

00:06That is a colossal squid, and the baby is about a third of a meter long.
00:10But when it's full grown, it'll be seven meters.
00:12In the footage, you can see its organs inside its transparent body.
00:15But the red color on its arms tells us that it can likely switch between being transparent and opaque.
00:20Those are its eyes, watching for predators in the deep dark ocean.
00:23And those are curved hooks at the end of its two longest tentacles with little suckers that help it capture and hold prey.
00:28This first glimpse of a colossal squid in its natural habitat was captured by a research vessel in the South Atlantic Ocean,
00:33using a remotely operated deep-sea vehicle, tech that's gotten a lot better in the last few years.
00:37And we hope it'll teach us more about how these amazing creatures really behave in the wild.
