Man arrested after jumping out of car during police chase in Melbourne

A man has been arrested following a dramatic police chase in Melbourne in which the driver jumped from a moving van and was hit by a police car. The pursuit began with the driver of a severely damaged van weaving through traffic and into the city's western suburbs. The van side-swiped at least one other vehicle with smoke and sparks seen emanating from the vehicle's burst tyres. A short time later the man jumped out of the driver-side window and was hit by a police car. He shows no signs of serious injuries and has been taken into custody.

00:00So just before six o'clock this morning, we were made aware of a fellow that was washing

00:06his car, getting ready for work, had the keys in the car. He was in the immediate vicinity

00:10of the car, physically washing it. An offender has come up from behind, has grabbed him,

00:15has physically moved him away from the car, has jumped in the car. And then what we see

00:20for the next few hours is what's happened when he has stolen that car. Look, I've seen

00:24the video and we got our bad guy. That's a fair thing to say. Looking at what happened,

00:30I don't think anyone would have expected that offender to bail out of the window like he

00:35did when he did. When I watched the video, I was a bit surprised thinking that someone

00:40would do that. Surprised he actually didn't get run over by the van he was in. And looking

00:44at it, it was pretty close. The driver of that police car I've briefly spoken to, he wasn't

00:51anticipating that that person was going to come out the window and run like he did.

00:55They've taken evasive action pretty quickly. And obviously we have seen the collision.

01:00But unfortunately in the policing world, we see pedestrian collisions all day, every day

01:05from people that in this case do crazy things. And in this case, the bad guy wanted to escape.

01:11It certainly wasn't a deliberate course of action as a way to arrest our offender.
