00:00The first week of Lachlan Young's trial for the murder of Hannah Maguire has wrapped up in
00:04Victoria's Supreme Court at Ballarat. Today, the court heard from two witnesses, including a CFA
00:10captain volunteer and a forensics expert. So far, most notably this week, we've heard from Lachlan's
00:16defence team that the 23-year-old does admit to killing Hannah on April 5, 2024. His defence team
00:22have conceded that he committed, quote, shameful actions to try and cover up her death. However,
00:27the crucial element of this trial is whether Lachlan intended to kill Hannah. Now, his defence
00:31argues that he did not. They say that Hannah's death was an unplanned and spontaneous event.
00:37But the prosecution reject this. Instead, their case claims that Lachlan had been planning to kill
00:42Hannah for some days before her death. Today, we heard from forensics expert Laura Noonan, who has
00:47been working with the Victoria Police Fire and Explosives Unit for a very long time. She has
00:52extensive experience in the area. She told the court that the severe fire damage to Hannah's
00:57vehicle indicated that the car had been burning for a prolonged period of time, likely about six
01:02hours. She was able to make this assertion based on the fact that there was no flammable liquids
01:08detected inside the car to otherwise explain such severe damage. We also heard from CFA Captain
01:14Alwyn Parker, who said, upon arrival at the scene, he was one of the first on the scene that morning,
01:19he noticed two logs in a very suspicious, quote, position. Mr Parker also told the court that the
01:27vehicle was completely burnt out when CFA members arrived that morning. The trial will pick up again
01:32on Monday for its second week, and more witnesses are expected to take the stand. We will, of course,
01:37keep you updated on all developments.
