Perkeso benefits aid hawker after accident disrupts income

00:00S. Vijaya Lechime, a 40-year-old hawker, used to earn about 100 ringgit daily selling Indian

00:09economy rice alongside her husband. However, an accident in August 2024 left her with knee and

00:17hip injuries, forcing her to take three months of bed rest and halt her work. Her husband was

00:22unhurt in the accident, the mother of two-faced significant financial hardship during her recovery

00:28period. With her 17-year-old son still attending school and monthly expenses mounting, the family

00:35struggled without her income. Her daughter is already married and has moved out. Relief arrived

00:41through the Social Security Organization benefits under the Self-Employment Social Security Scheme.

00:47Human Resources Minister Stephen Sim personally presented the assistance during his visit to

00:52Macangbubok on Thursday. Vijaya Lechime received RM13,354.29 in benefits covering her three-month

01:02medical leave period. She explained that while she hadn't personally enrolled in Perkeso,

01:08all registered hawkers under the Seberang Parai City Council in Bukit Mertajam were automatically

01:14enrolled by their MP, Stephen Sim, at no cost to them.

02:21According to Sim, 800,000 people have registered under the scheme nationwide throughout last year.

02:28As of May 31, this year, 3,557 claims, totaling RM12.5 million, have been approved.
