00:00Moving on to Washington, D.C., where the president has now weighed in on the debate over the NFL team there.
00:09And there's Team Z Sports found out that there is an organization that agrees with the president
00:15that the commanders should go back to their old name.
00:19For those who don't know, the team used to be called the Washington Redskins,
00:25and it was changed to the commanders.
00:27Actually, it went to the Washington football team and then eventually the commanders.
00:31So here is first what President Trump had to say about the debate.
00:34The commanders changed the name back to Redskins.
00:37Well, you want me to make a controversial statement?
00:40I would.
00:42I wouldn't have changed the name.
00:44But that's it.
00:45It just doesn't have the same ring to me.
00:49But, you know, winning can make everything sound good.
00:52So if they win, all of a sudden the commander sounds good.
00:55But I wouldn't have changed the name.
00:56Right.
00:57So we spoke to the group called the Native American Guardians Association,
01:00and they said, look, this is actually a symbol of pride and power for the Native Americans.
01:06And this is something that we never wanted to go away in the first place.
01:09But as we all know, that's not how everyone feels.
01:11Lucas, that's weird.
01:12Well, I actually wanted to, I Googled it this morning because I just wanted to get some clarity.
01:17That's certainly not the way it's defined.
01:19Right.
01:20But this organization specifically says that they never viewed it as a slur.
01:24That's interesting.
01:25It was actually a pride thing and a symbol for their entire culture.
01:30So they loved it.
01:31And, you know, like we were talking a little bit earlier today, I think the problem is the commanders isn't a great name.
01:38It doesn't roll off the tongue.
01:39It's not really cool.
01:40It sucks.
01:40I don't get that, that it sucks.
01:43They're in Washington, D.C.
01:45I know.
01:45The commander-in-chief.
01:46I thought there's one.
01:47The commander-in-chief.
01:48Right.
01:49But commanders.
01:50Well, you have, okay.
01:52Trump is correct on this, though.
01:54If they win a Super Bowl, this all goes away.
01:56And Washington commanders sounds a lot better.
01:57That's true.
01:58No, that's absolutely true.
01:58And then suddenly it would be really cool.
02:00By the way, you know, this group that you guys.
02:03Is it Patriots taken?
02:05Oh, yeah.
02:06For now.
02:07For now.
02:08The Native American Guardians Association.
02:11Everyone knows what the acronym is, right?
02:14NAGA.
02:15I'm just saying that they tend to align themselves.
02:18Oh, my God.
02:18I did not think of that.
02:19With Donald Trump policies.
02:20Oh, my gosh.
02:20Because, and it was formed in 2017.
02:24So.
02:25Oh, Lucas, you should have disclosed that part.
02:27I've just got to disclose that.
02:28But listen, they can still have their feelings about the team.
02:30I understand that.
02:31But the, when you look, when you Google it, it's all different.
02:36Gabriel Smith, Silver Spring, Maryland.
02:39Uh, it's obvious that the commanders want to get fans comfortable with the idea of changing
02:42the name back to the Redskins.
02:44Think about it.
02:45The NFL draft is in D.C. this year.
02:47They brought back the classic uniforms to trigger some of that nostalgia.
02:50And the uniforms look dope.
02:51D.C. is getting a brand new stadium.
02:53The team is finally good again.
02:54With a president in office that's re-renaming military bases after Heroes of the Confederacy.
02:58And doesn't really seem to care about public opinion.
03:02So, I think it's obvious.
03:04What is the prevailing there in the, uh, in that area, in the DMV?
03:08What is, what does the public in general think about it?
03:12Uh, I mean, I think that you have a lot of folks that are really, you know, tied to that
03:15name.
03:16You know, they've been fans of the organization for years.
03:19They grew up rooting for the team.
03:20So, I think that they're, I think it's pretty split.
03:22There's definitely a lot of folks that do still support the name.
03:25And then there's a lot of folks that probably don't.
03:27So, I mean, it's, I think it's pretty, pretty evenly split.
