00:00What are the most urgent problems which EU citizens living in cities want to see tackled?
00:10Three quarters of people in the EU currently live in cities and urban areas.
00:15This figure is set to grow to 78% by 2050.
00:19Across the EU, 40% of citizens identify a lack of affordable housing
00:24as an immediate and urgent problem in the place where they live.
00:27This is followed by a lack of quality public services such as healthcare and childcare at 32%
00:34and employment or lack of job opportunities at 31%.
00:38However, significant differences are reported across various areas.
00:42While affordable housing remains the top concern in both cities and towns,
00:47rural respondents mention the lack of quality public services as their main worry.
00:52In 15 member states, at least half of the respondents living in cities
00:57reply that the lack of affordable housing is an immediate and urgent problem in their town
01:03with the highest shares seen in Ireland, Spain and Luxembourg.
01:07More than 6 in 10 citizens report that their local authorities are not taking any or enough action
01:14to address the challenges of climate change and the environment in the place where they live.
01:19When it comes to pedestrian safety and cycling lanes in urban areas,
01:23women are more likely than men to state their local authorities do not take enough action or any at all.
