Burdekin Shire's new money-saving wastewater treatment plant uses macroalgae and sunlight to purify sewage. After cleaning the wastewater and absorbing nitrogen and phosphorus, the nutrient-rich algae can then be used as farm fertiliser.

00:00This wastewater treatment plant is a world first operation. Its secret weapon is algae.
00:10It's the first time that anyone anywhere has done anything on this scale using algae.
00:16The North Queensland facility near Eyre has been in the works for more than a decade.
00:21Rather than chemicals, it uses algae to filter out waste and delivers clean water back to the community.

00:33We definitely are punching above our weight with this project, first of its kind of this size in the world.
00:40The leftover algae by-product can then be processed and put to use by farmers across the country.
00:47It helps them accelerate root and shoot growth in plants.
00:50It enables them to use far less fertiliser and get a far healthier crop.
00:54We're only getting positive feedback from a large number of farmers growing different crops.
01:01It's hoped more local farmers will use the algae as fertiliser to reduce harmful runoff into the nearby Great Barrier Reef.
