SIMON CALDER: Passengers warned over 100ml rules change at two UK airportsThe Independent
Transcript
00:00The liquids rules for airline passengers have been with us for nearly 20 years. You know the
00:07score. Everything in containers of less than 100 millilitres, all within a clear plastic
00:14resealable bag, no bigger than one litre. Well, at last, Birmingham Airport has become the first
00:23major UK hub actually to relax that rule. Yes, you can take liquids up to two litres through in your
00:33cabin baggage. Furthermore, you don't have to unpack your electricals, things like laptops and
00:41tablets and put those in a separate tray. It's all much smoother and so the queues that I'm seeing
00:49here are so much better. Everything flowing through much more easily than it was last summer,
00:55which is just as well because this is going to be the busiest summer ever at the West Midlands hub.
01:03What should they be doing now? The complete opposite. Leave everything in the bag, don't remove anything
01:09except for what's on your person, so taking over your coins, out of your pockets, your wallets,
01:13your mobile phones and preparing yourself for when you go through security but you don't have to take
01:19anything out. That will actually only slow your journey down. Now, it's really important to note
01:24that while Birmingham and actually now Edinburgh have done away with the 100 mill limit, many other
01:32airports have not and you need to be aware that wherever you're flying back from, the chances are it's
01:38going to be the same old rules. So, the best message is if you have been told explicitly that you don't
01:47need to worry about the 100 mill rule, then go ahead, make the most of that, but otherwise assume
01:54that it's just the same as normal. Good luck, everybody.
