During remarks on the Senate floor Wednesday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) spoke about the nomination of Bryan Bedford to serve as FAA Administrator.
Transcript
00:00On the Bedford nomination. Today the Senate will vote on the confirmation of
00:05Donald Trump's deeply flawed nominee to lead the FAA, Brian Bedford. I will vote
00:11no on Mr. Bedford because he has failed to show he'll put safety of airline
00:16passengers above protecting airline profits. He's the wrong choice for anyone
00:24worried about aviation safety, particularly at a time like this. Throughout
00:29his career as an airline executive and during his confirmation hearing, Bedford
00:34has shown a callous disregard for the safety protocols like the 1500 hour rule.
00:39I worked to establish this rule with the families of Flight 3407, the tragic
00:45commercial airline crash that occurred in western New York on a cold wintry night
00:49in 2009. Today the 1500 hour rule, because of the hard work of those Buffalo
00:56families, is the gold standard for pilot training. They pounded the hallways here,
01:02talking to members, Democrat and Republican, and we got the bill passed because of their
01:07good work. Confirming Mr. Bedford would be an insult to the families of the flight, of
01:13Flight 3407, and the memory of their loved ones. It would betray everything these
01:19families have sacrificed to make sure others don't suffer the same tragedy they
01:24did 15 years ago. The Senate should not confirm someone who will prioritize profits
01:31over passenger safety like Mr. Bedford. I vote no on his nomination.
