At a press briefing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport yesterday, DHS Sec. Kristi Noem discussed the new TSA policy that ends the practice of passengers having to remove shoes to get through security checkpoints.
Transcript
00:00We have some very exciting news to announce that today we have started a new
00:05no-shoes policy with the Department of the Transportation Security
00:10Administration. TSA will no longer require travelers to remove their shoes
00:15when they go through our security checkpoints. We are very confident that
00:19we can continue to provide hospitality to folks and for American travelers and
00:23for those visiting our country while maintaining the same standard of security
00:27for passengers and for our homeland. The key to our approach is layered security.
00:32Passengers will still pass through multiple layers of screening. They'll also go
00:37through identity verification and in fact TSA has recently experienced some
00:42fantastic success with implementing Real ID. As you know Real ID was put into
00:48statute over 20 years ago and we recently put that into place that it went
00:53seamlessly. In fact right now we are experiencing over 94% compliance with
00:59passengers who come through our airports and screening processes with Real ID
01:04compliant identification. With this no-shoes policy we anticipate that Americans
01:11and travelers and those coming into our country will be very excited that they
01:15will no longer have to remove their shoes. The one thing that I will say is that
01:19doesn't mean that there won't be times once in a while where someone will have
01:23to remove their shoes. If they get put into a different situation or need
01:27additional layers of screening where that may be asked of them. But
01:31overwhelmingly the policy will be that no longer will that be required of
01:35every single person that comes to a checkpoint.
01:38Alright.
