The Intercept reports the U.S. government has shelled out $22 million for development of such products.

In a press release, the Director of National Intelligence says,

the Smart Electrically Powered and Networked Textile Systems, or Smart ePants, program

represents the largest single investment to develop active smart textiles that feel, move, and function like any garment.

Quote, resulting innovations stand to provide the intelligence community, Department of Defense,

Department of Homeland Security, and other agencies with durable, ready-to-wear clothing
