00:00Today, SYNC Ports Rowing Club in Fathersham have taken place in the Skiffy Worlds, an
00:12international rowing competition specific to coastal rowing boats.
00:16I think it's 79 of the boats you've seen out on the water today, the St Isle Skiffs,
00:21are going to be competing.
00:22I think there's 2,000 people going, so there's this world championships, people from four
00:28continents, and we'll be representing Fathersham.
00:32As part of a community boat building project, many people across Fathersham have helped build
00:36the boat that the team are rowing with today, dubbed Minerva.
00:40We've built five skiffs now, and the age range of those who've been the boat builders has
00:47been 12 to 86 I think, so they come for two hours a week with me, I'm the lead boat builder,
00:56to just carry on from where the boat has progressed.
01:00Fathersham has a creek, Fathersham Creek, and I think the project has highlighted the beautiful
01:09creek that we have.
01:11Got people on the water, people perhaps who've not taken part in water sports before, and it's
01:19really brought the creek alive.
01:22I also spoke with a member that said rowing with the community has changed her life significantly.
01:26It's been really useful and helpful in my recovery from two serious illnesses, one brain hemorrhage,
01:34and secondly overcoming cancer, which was my last chemotherapy session, which was December.
01:42We did go to the Dutch World Skiffy Festival, or competition, which was three years ago, and
01:51it was really lovely.
01:52We met so many interesting and different people from all over the world, Scotland, Ireland,
01:57Canada, America.
01:58We're hoping to not embarrass ourselves, basically.
02:01But who knows, we could come back with a medal, which would be fantastic.
02:06As a person that likes to see the glasses half full, as opposed to half empty, it would
02:13be fantastic if we did come back with something, but competing is the main thing, and just being
02:20part of it.
02:21Well, we wish the team the best of luck for the rest of the competition this week, and
02:25we hope to see a few gold medals when they return to Kent.
