00:00It's been five years since the sweeping national security law came into force in Hong Kong.
00:06Since then, many Hong Kongers have chosen to leave the territory and move overseas.
00:11On Monday, some of those now residing in Taiwan gathered to talk about how Beijing's repeal of civil liberties has impacted the lives of people back home.
00:30Since the law took effect, scholars say schools and public institutions have stepped up so-called patriotic education, teaching the importance of always keeping China's interests in mind.
00:46For example, since 2022, universities in Hong Kong have made national security courses mandatory.
00:54School teachers must undergo national security training, and young people hoping to become civil servants must pass exams on the matter.
01:02But that doesn't mean all resistance to Beijing's authority has been stamped out, as one academic explains.
01:09Hong Kongers don't have to be反抗.
01:11They're just on the表面 to express a忠誠 for the Hong Kong government to protect themselves's safety.
01:18But in the私自身, there are still many areas that are constantly反抗.
01:21Hong Kongers want the Taiwanese public to keep paying attention to what's happening in Hong Kong.
01:27They are also calling for more support for Hong Kongers choosing to relocate to Taiwan under the current political climate to help them settle and rebuild their lives.
