James Gunn is saying 'Superman' is an immigrant story. The filmmaker and co-head of DC Studios recently opened up to The Sunday Times about the themes behind his new superhero blockbuster, especially given the current political climate in the United States and President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration policies.

00:11The filmmaker and co-head of DC Studios recently opened up to the Sunday Times

00:16about the themes behind his new superhero blockbuster,

00:19especially given the current political climate in the United States

00:22and President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration policies.

00:26I mean, Superman is the story of America,

00:28an immigrant that came from other places and populated the country.

00:32But for me, it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value

00:37and is something we have lost.

00:39He also acknowledged that Superman may be interpreted differently depending on your politics.

00:44Yes, it plays differently, but it's about human kindness.

00:46And obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind

00:49and will take it as offensive just because it's about kindness.

00:53But screw them.

01:17due to cultural figures being mean online.
