00:01After two months behind bars, Chad's former prime minister, Soukseh Mathras, is appealing to French President Emmanuel Macron for help.
00:10In a letter, his lawyers are urging Macron to speak out, accusing him of staying silent and asking him to step in and mediate.
00:18Mathras is accused of orchestrating the massacre of 42 herders in the village of Mandapua in the south of the country last May.
00:26But he says the charges are all politically motivated. According to RFI, his legal team claims the judge who ordered his detention was pressured by the highest levels of the Chadian state.
00:37They say the only evidence is a reporting from 2023 by Mathras calls for communities in the south to defend themselves long before the violence happened.
00:47They're calling it a violation of human rights and an attack on Chad's main opposition voice.
00:53With legal options running out at home, Mathras' team wants France to act and they're looking to Macron to lead the way.
