00:00The first day of talks at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, came to an end with a final declaration focused on mutual respect and understanding, sovereignty, solidarity, democracy and inclusion.
00:25Pope Leo XIV appointed Tybalt Bernie Archbishop of Chambury as the new president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors.
00:38And in the United States, the death toll from flooding in Kirk County, Texas, has risen to 79.
00:49Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:56We begin with the news.
01:01The first day of talks at the 17th BRICS Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil came to a close Sunday with the participation of heads of states and world leaders.
01:18The bloc's final declaration for the first round of talks expressed the member country's rejection to international blockades and to the genocidal actions and the obstruction of humanitarian aid by the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people.
01:33It also calls to create the necessary conditions to guarantee a lasting peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict and reaffirm the bloc's commitment to advance equality, democracy, collaboration and mutual respect among the countries of the global south.
01:52During the 17th BRICS Summit, Brazilian President Lissina Celula da Silva highlighted the effects of neoliberalism in the world and called for tax justice and against tax evasion as fundamental strategies in the 21st century.
02:07International aid flow plummeted.
02:14The debt of the poorest countries increased.
02:19The neoliberal model has deepened inequality.
02:25Three thousand millionaires earned six trillion dollars in 2015.
02:37Tax justice and the fight against tax evasion are fundamental to growth and sustainable strategies for the 21st century.
02:43Likewise, the Brazilian head of state warned that the attacks on the territories had become recurrent violatory actions that could generate a nuclear catastrophe.
02:53There have been recurring violations of STATES territorial integrity.
03:00The depression of negotiated solutions overlook efforts of non-proliferation of atomic weapons without protection in international law.
03:10The failure of actions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya and Syria will tend to repeat in a more serious way, bringing about disastrous consequences for the stability of the Middle East, North Africa and especially our people.
03:26Such aftermaths are currently felt.
03:29At the beginning of the plenary session, Brazilian President Luisina Celula da Silva condemned the use of economic resources for war and not for peace and development.
03:42International law has become mere letters, along with the peaceful settlement of disputes.
03:53We face an unprecedented number of conflicts since the Second World War.
03:57And the arms race is fueled.
04:00It is easier to allocate 5% of GDP for military spending.
04:06Than to allocate 0, 7% promised for official development assistance.
04:12This makes it clear that the resources to implement the 2030 agenda exist.
04:18But are not available due to lack of political priority.
04:23It is always easier to invest in war than in peace.
04:29Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the BRICS summit in Rio de Janeiro via videoconference from Moscow on Sunday.
04:37He stated that the BRICS block represents 40% of the global economy with a GDP of 77 trillion dollars.
04:45My colleagues, dear friends.
04:48Together, we have enormous political, economic, scientific, technological and human potential.
04:54The BRICS countries not only represent one third of the Earth's surface and almost half of the world's population,
05:01but also 40% of the world economy and their combined GDP in purchasing power parity already reaches 77 trillion dollars.
05:12Cuban President Miguel Diaz Canel met Sunday in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with business executives of the South American country
05:19who expressed their solidarity with the Caribbean island in the context of the new U.S. sanctions.
05:24The Cuban President affirmed that the island faces a daily challenge amid the U.S. blockade
05:29and stressed that the Cuban people will never surrender to Washington threats.
05:34Canel also signaled that resistance is encouraged by the solidarity of friendly countries who showed their will to join Cuba in its struggle against the blockade.
05:45On the other hand, the Cuban leader called the U.S. government to take the Caribbean island out of the list of countries that allegedly promote terrorism.
05:53And now we have a short break coming up. But first, remember, you can join us on TikTok at Telesur English,
06:01where we'll find news in different formats, news updates and more. We'll be right back. Stay with us.
06:06Welcome back to From the South. On Saturday, Pope Leo XIV appointed Archbishop of Canberra Thibaut Berni
06:24as the new president of the Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, an entity dedicated to combating abuse within the Church.
06:32Following his appointment, Archbishop Berni expressed his honour for the trust placed in him
06:39and his full awareness of the grave and sacred task of the Commission.
06:43Berni assured that this Commission will help the Church become even more vigilant, responsible and compassionate in its mission to protect the most vulnerable among us.
06:54The French Archbishop was already a member of the Commission created by Pope Francis in 2013,
07:00which until now was shared by U.S. Cardinal Sean O'Malley.
07:10Bolivia's Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy Alejandro Gallardo warned that the country could lose an opportunity to position itself in the international lithium market
07:19if progress is not made with the approval of the agreement signed between Bolivia lithium deposits and the Chinese consortium broadband capital CBC.
07:29As he explained, projections indicate that the price of lithium will reach its highest point between 2031 and 2032,
07:38so it is essential to start now with the construction of the plants to take advantage of that scenario.
07:45The contract with CBC includes an investment of more than $1 million for the installation of two industrial plants
07:52with the capacity to produce between 10,000 and 25,000 tonnes of lithium carbonate per year.
07:59Some parliamentarians have also expressed the importance of the build advancing in the legislature.
08:06The President of Venezuela, Nicolas Maduro, held a meeting with the Japanese architect Riken Yamamoto in the city of Caracas.
08:18During the meeting, new dimensions of Venezuela's physical and spatial development were discussed with the goal of advancing popular well-being.
08:27The participants reached an agreement on a series of urban renewal projects designed by architect Yamamoto,
08:34which will be financed and executed by the Together Everything is Possible Corporation.
08:40These initiatives will be implemented in the popular parishes of Petare and San Agustin in Caracas,
08:46as part of the Seven Transformations Programme, which aims to build human-centred cities that foster the good living policy.
08:58In Buenos Aires, Argentina, Peronism reached Saturday a first deal at the brink of provincial elections.
09:04Subsequently, a commission for making up a Peronist Front was authorised.
09:09The agreement was sealed at a Congress in the Municipal Theatre of Merlot City,
09:14where officials have the green light to form electoral fronts with other forces.
09:19In this way, after much work and tense meetings three days before the deadline to register alliances,
09:25they unanimously passed the creation of a local government committee made up of Maximo Kirchner,
09:31alongside four other leaders aiming at forming a new coalition to enter the September and October contest.
09:38Therefore, the majority of the Peronist leadership celebrated the deal dubbed the Merlot Agreement.
09:45Russian President Vladimir Putin attended Sunday an exhibition showcasing the results of the Russian Popular Front's effort over the past three years,
09:58held under the motto of everything for victory.
10:01The event is held at Moscow's Russian National Center, where Putin looked at various types of hardware being used in the special operation in Ukraine,
10:11including drones and other types of vehicles.
10:14During his visit to the exhibition, the Russian President offered a balance of the military operations since it began three years ago,
10:21and highlighted the progress made by the humanitarian support mission in the Donbass and the new Russian regions.
10:28The Russian leader also took the opportunity to honour families and civilians who have provided assistance to the participants in the special military operation.
10:37It's Carnival season in St. Vincent and the Granadines, and we go now to our special envoye Belén de los Santos,
10:40to know all the latest details.
10:43Hi, Bell, what can you share with us at this event?
10:44It's Carnival season in St. Vincent and the Granadines, and we go now to our special envoye Belén de los Santos to know all the latest details.
10:47It's Carnival season at this event, and we go now to our special envoye Belén de los Santos,
10:54Hi, Bell, what can you share with us at this hour?
11:01It is Carnival season in St. Vincent and the Granadines and we go now to our special envoye Belén de los Santos,
11:05to know all the latest details.
11:07Hi, Bell, what can you share with us at this hour?
11:09Hello, Bell!
11:10Hello, Bell!
11:11Hello, Music Bones!
11:12Hello, Studios!
11:13Do you hear the music?
11:14Hello, Studios!
11:15Hello Studios! Do you hear the music behind me?
11:18This is just one of the side events of this Sunday of Binzimas.
11:24We've been saying that the parties were getting ready and that we were going to be touring the sites in Kingstown.
11:30We are just a few kilometers away from downtown, from where we spoke last time.
11:35And in this case, the party has been going on for quite some time.
11:40And actually, it is about to end. That is why the party is with such a high spirit.
11:46Because people are ready to continue.
11:49And we have said that the Montgrass is the main event tonight.
11:54It's in Victoria Park where we were last time.
11:57And in that moment and in that place, the best of the best at Calypso will be performing to choose the King of Calypso at this Binzimas.
12:08Afterwards, a very long and special night.
12:12Because Juve Arc will take place in the very early hours of the morning.
12:16This traditional Caribbean festivity of Carnival that starts before dawn.
12:22And it's a celebration of pain, of liberation.
12:26It dates back to the resistance of slavery and the celebration of freedom.
12:33And we'll be talking a little bit more about that.
12:35Because we'll take you through everything that is happening this special night at Binzimas.
12:41For now, I go back to you studios, but we will have more.
12:45Thank you, Belle, for all the details.
12:47And now, let's stay in San Vincent and the Granadines.
12:50Because the people came out for one of the most awaited events of Carnival season.
12:54Belén de los Santos tells us more in the following report.
12:57This is Soka night at Victoria Park.
13:01And people came out for one of the most awaited events of Carnival season in San Vincent and the Grenadines.
13:07The Soka monarch features the best of the best at this Carnival genre.
13:11While everyone awaits to see who will put on the show that takes the highest title.
13:16I feel really good, I feel really good.
13:21I feel as though the delivery was on point.
13:26I mean, I feel like mistakes were made, but I won't let it deter me.
13:30I feel like we could only fail for hours to get better.
13:32It's my first year in the competition.
13:34So maybe next year we could come out bigger and stronger in New Raga.
13:37But I'm definitely going for it in the power.
13:40High energy is a must in Soka performances.
13:43And the artists give their all to get a warm response from the audience.
13:48One of the criteria that the judges are looking for.
13:51The energy was great because, you know, getting into the competition early
13:56and have that kind of energy is hard.
13:58So I'm grateful for that energy.
14:00Then I know my song is doing some wonders.
14:05One of the highlights of the night was Angie Maya's performance of No Owner.
14:10A song speaking of women's empowerment that was cheered on and welcomed by the dancing crowds.
14:16I really do feel like it was needed.
14:26A lot of females, artists like myself, you may be in the Soka industry or you may be in the music industry in general.
14:35And you might feel a little intimidated because it is a male dominated field yet.
14:40But you can still come in and do your thing in your form.
14:43Because at the end of the day, nobody can perform like you.
14:45Nobody can sing like you.
14:47So there's really nothing to be afraid about.
14:50But it also gives me an edge because I could come and sing about those things that I have experienced in.
14:56So it's a bit more relatable to my audience.
15:01The general feeling of liberation and true joy for Carnival was high at Kingstown tonight.
15:07From this corner of the Caribbean, Soka culture speaks of the right to happiness and celebration through music.
15:14And local performers are sure to keep it alive.
15:17Soka is freedom.
15:18Soka is freedom.
15:19Soka is freedom.
15:20Soka is happy music.
15:21I've never heard a Soka song that maybe not.
15:23So you wake up in the morning, you're trying to catch a vibe.
15:26Maybe you wake up in a bad mood or maybe just...
15:28Today is just not your day.
15:30Put on a Soka song, right spirit.
15:33A little Soka will not be a wall.
15:36To be honest.
15:37And Soka is the music, the type of music and of the art form that it doesn't implicate violence.
15:44It doesn't implicate bad energy.
15:46It's all about having fun, letting go, be free, loving each other and just enjoying yourself.
15:52So Soka will never be out of the picture.
15:55Not as long as we are alive.
15:58Belen de los Santos from Kingstown signed Vincent and the Granadines for Telesur.
16:03And after this report, we have a second show break coming up.

16:23No break, don't go away.
16:27Welcome back to From the South, an investigation by the British newspaper, the Financial Times,
16:55revealed that the U.S. consulting firm, a Boston consulting group, designed a plan for the possible relocation of more than 500,000 Palestinians outside the Gaza Strip.
17:07The U.S. company worked for several months on the secret project called Aurora, which was tasked with estimating the cost of displacing more than 500,000 people from the enclave.
17:18According to the report, each Gazan would receive a relocation package of 9,000, which would total about 5 billion dollars.
17:28It was even calculated that a forced expulsion would be cheaper than keeping humanitarian assistance within the territory.
17:35The revelation of this project increases the tension on the already critical situation in Gaza,
17:41and raises new questions about the true intentions behind some international aid programs in the region.
17:48In Iraq, millions of Muslims gathered in the city of Karbala to commemorate Ashura, a day of mourning the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
18:02On Sunday, Iraqis, dressed in black, gathered around the shrines of Imam Hussain and his brother Abbas, performing traditional mourning rituals.
18:13Among the activities is the Nasri, which distributes free food and drink to mourners,
18:18and the disadvantaged, representing the spirit of sacrifice and solidarity embodied by Imam Hussain.
18:24Ashura is a religious act and commemorates the Battle of Karbala in which Imam Hussain, together with his family,
18:31was murdered after refusing to swear allegiance to the Umayyad Caliphate, consolidating the schemes between Sunni and Shiit Islam.
18:42The annual pilgrimage is one of the largest religious events in the Shiit world.
18:46Meanwhile, in Yemen, people took to the streets in Sana'a, the capital, to commemorate the holy day of Ashura.
18:58Demonstrators waved flags and banners and shunted slogans protesting the Israeli army,
19:04and the protesters condemned the regional escalation following the recent war between Israel and Iran.
19:10In the United States, the death toll from flooding in Kerr County, Texas, has risen to 79.
19:34Despite persistent rains, authorities have confirmed the rescue of at least 20 girls,
19:39while efforts continue to rescue other missing people who were at Camp Mestek.
19:45President Donald Trump has declared Kerr County a major disaster area due to flooding,
19:51and authorities are urging citizens to remain alert.
19:58In Syria, civil defense teams and the National Fire Department continue to work tirelessly
20:03to control the fires that have devoured vast expanses of forest and rural land in the province of Latakia in the northwest of the country.
20:13In response to the emergency, the Ministry of the Interior, in coordination with the Syrian Red Crescent,
20:19has evacuated several villages and closed key roads to facilitate firefighting efforts and protect the population.
20:25According to the Minister of Emergency and Disaster Management, Raed al-Saleh, the magnitude of the disaster is worrying.
20:34There are currently more than 40 active fires spread across about 20 regions of the country.
20:41The situation remains critical, and the authorities are maintaining uninterrupted efforts
20:46in order to reduce the impact of the flames and protect the affected communities.
20:50In Spain, thousands of people gathered Sunday in the northern city of Pamplona in Navarra
21:14to celebrate the traditional shovinas or the firing of a rocket
21:18that marks the start of the San Fermin Festival.
21:21This celebration, which dates back to medieval times, attracts foreigners and locals alike,
21:27locals dressed up in traditional attire, wear white shirts and pants with red sacks and scarves.
21:34The celebration begins with fireworks, while participants sprinkle each other with red wine,
21:40and they also start training for the traditional run with the bulls' schedule for next Monday.
21:45This year, participants are also availing themselves of the opportunity
21:50to demand an end to the genocide against Palestine.
21:58And like this, we have come to the end of this ins-brief,
