To win scholarship money for college, Lauren enters the same beauty pageant her mom once dominated in her youth. Lauren is thrust into a dark, toxic world of cutthroat competition and manipulation. Too preoccupied with the pageant, Lauren doesn’t realize that her best friend Rae is falling seriously ill with an uncommon and potentially deadly disease β€” meningitis B – prompting her to turn the pageant platform into a tool for awareness.

00:00:22Lauren?
00:00:24Excuse us.
00:00:26Move!
00:00:28Move! Move! Sorry!
00:00:30What?
00:00:32Oh.
00:00:36Oh my god, no!
00:00:40Honey, it's gonna be okay!
00:00:50Okay, Ray.
00:00:52This is a tough one.
00:00:54True or false?
00:00:56Lipids dissolve easily in water.
00:00:58True.
00:01:00I thought you said you studied.
00:01:02That's not what I'm doing right now.
00:01:04Ray, you need to know this stuff.
00:01:06No, actually you need to know this stuff
00:01:08because you're the one who wants to be a doctor.
00:01:10I just need to know enough to get a seat.
00:01:12Oh, FYI, I signed this up for prom committee.
00:01:16Dude, I'm not even sure I want to go to prom, much less plan it.
00:01:18Okay, that's crazy talk.
00:01:20Everybody wants to go to prom.
00:01:22Okay, fine.
00:01:24Just do it because it'll look good on your college applications.
00:01:26Hmm, super helpful considering I submitted them months ago.
00:01:30Hi, I will take a black coffee, please.
00:01:34Oh my god!
00:01:36Lauren Burke?
00:01:38Is that you, honey?
00:01:40Helene!
00:01:41Helene Matthews!
00:01:42My goodness!
00:01:43The last time I saw you, you were about this big.
00:01:45Oh, my sweet Nora.
00:01:47She was competing during Little Miss Dewdrop
00:01:49and the two of you were running around wild in your backyard.
00:01:52Right.
00:01:53Yeah, Mrs. Matthews.
00:01:54It's nice to see you.
00:01:58Oh, shoot.
00:01:59I have to pick Nora up from her vocal lesson,
00:02:01but you tell your mom I'm going to call her, okay?
00:02:03Okay, okay. Bye.
00:02:04Bye.
00:02:05What was that?
00:02:07I know, right?
00:02:08All my mom's pageant friends are like that.
00:02:10Oh, yeah.
00:02:11I always forgot your mom was like a beauty queen.
00:02:13She said she had the best time and it paid for college,
00:02:16so whatever.
00:02:18You ready for another one?
00:02:19No, but it hit me anyway.
00:02:24Oh, my god.
00:02:26This has to be about my application, right?
00:02:28I'll be one way to find out.
00:02:33Why isn't it opening?
00:02:34Go to the website.
00:02:37Come on.
00:02:38Come on.
00:02:39Come on.
00:02:40Oh, my god.
00:02:41What have I done to deserve this?
00:02:42Uh, call your mom.
00:02:47Rob, I'm going to have to call you back.
00:02:49Okay.
00:02:50Bye.
00:02:55Hey, everything okay?
00:02:56What's going on?
00:02:57I'm fine, but I need a favor.
00:02:58It's life or death.
00:02:59I seriously doubt that.
00:03:01For real, Mom Vanderton updated my application,
00:03:03but I can't open the app.
00:03:04Or the website.
00:03:05And if I don't find out what it says,
00:03:06I'm literally going to die.
00:03:07Okay.
00:03:08Hold on.
00:03:09You're the best.
00:03:13Hmm.
00:03:14I'll be right back.
00:03:16Mom?
00:03:17Are you there?
00:03:18Mom?
00:03:19Yeah.
00:03:20No, I'm here.
00:03:21The app and the website are both down.
00:03:23So I came out to see if you have anything in the mailbox.
00:03:26Mom, this isn't the dark ages.
00:03:28They're not sending it in the mail.
00:03:30How much do you want to bet?
00:03:34A toast to my baby girl.
00:03:47When you were four years old, you came downstairs and informed your mom and me that you were going
00:03:54to be a doctor.
00:03:55And I say informed because there was absolutely no discussion.
00:03:59True story.
00:04:00But that's who you are and what you do.
00:04:03You set a goal and you achieve it.
00:04:06Because why?
00:04:07Because Burke's never say die.
00:04:10We're just so proud of you.
00:04:13Thought she was going to qualify for more financial aid.
00:04:20And do you think it would help if we sent them copies of our mortgage and car payments?
00:04:26Or Lauren's medical bills?
00:04:28What are we going to do?
00:04:30Well, we're going to do what other people do.
00:04:35We're going to apply for scholarships.
00:04:38Take out a loan.
00:04:39No loans.
00:04:40The last thing I want is for her to have to start out in the hole like I did.
00:04:45I hate that this is even an issue.
00:04:48Whoa.
00:04:4917K's a lot of cash.
00:04:50What are you going to do?
00:04:51I made an appointment with the new guidance counselor tomorrow.
00:04:54Oh yeah, Ms. Dorman.
00:04:56She's so dope.
00:04:57Yeah, she helped me with a bunch of my cosmetology school applications.
00:05:00If anyone's going to know what to do, it'll be her.
00:05:03Oh, also, do you want to get a smoothie tomorrow from Savage Nature?
00:05:06You want a smoothie.
00:05:08You know that has fruit in it, right?
00:05:10Yeah, I know.
00:05:11I like healthy things.
00:05:12Mm-hmm.
00:05:13Okay, so there's this really cute guy who works there who I've like almost made eye contact with.
00:05:19I wish I could, but I have to have family breakfast.
00:05:22My mom is obsessed with us spending quality time together.
00:05:25Dude, did something like go out on their group chat?
00:05:27Because Beth can speak of nothing else.
00:05:29It's like she thinks the minute I graduate, she's never going to see me again.
00:05:32You're literally living at home next year.
00:05:34Yeah, I know.
00:05:35Can you imagine how needy she'd be if I was actually leaving?
00:05:37Can I come in?
00:05:38Yeah.
00:05:39Oh, hi, Mrs. Burke.
00:05:40Hey, Ray.
00:05:41I'll talk to you tomorrow.
00:05:42Hi.
00:05:43What's up?
00:05:44Um, nothing.
00:05:45I just...
00:05:46I know you seemed a little bit off after dinner and considering you just got the best news
00:06:00of your life, it seemed a little strange, so what's up?
00:06:04I overheard you and Dad talking about how much Vanderton's going to cost.
00:06:09Mom, I don't have to go there.
00:06:12I can go somewhere else.
00:06:13I can go somewhere cheaper.
00:06:14Lauren, no.
00:06:15Vanderton is your dream.
00:06:17It's just so expensive.
00:06:19It is.
00:06:21But it's also the best figurative and prognostic factor research facility.
00:06:27Honey, if we can make this happen for you, we will.
00:06:32Okay?
00:06:34Okay.
00:06:35Get some sleep.
00:06:37Okay.
00:06:42Hey, I almost forgot.
00:06:43I ran as that friend of yours today, Mrs. Matthews.
00:06:47Helene?
00:06:48What's she doing in town?
00:06:50I don't know.
00:06:51Yeah, she lives here now.
00:06:54Laura?
00:06:55Yeah?
00:06:56I mean it.
00:06:58We're gonna figure this out, okay?
00:07:01Okay.
00:07:02I love you.
00:07:04Love you, too.
00:07:06So what can I do for you?
00:07:09We got the financial aid package, and...
00:07:13It's not enough.
00:07:15Like, not even close.
00:07:18Yeah.
00:07:19It's kind of the plight of the middle class.
00:07:21Your parents make too much to qualify for aid, but not enough to afford such high tuition.
00:07:27The good news is, you have been busy these last four years.
00:07:31I'm going to email you a website where you can put all your info, and it'll give you a list of things you qualify for.
00:07:37Thanks.
00:07:38I know this can be overwhelming.
00:07:41If you need any help, that's myself.
00:07:45Call me anytime.
00:07:51So how's the money hunt going?
00:07:56If I get every single scholarship I apply for, it's almost enough to cover my first year's tuition.
00:08:02Yikes.
00:08:03Man, it's too bad you can't pay for college the way your mom did.
00:08:09Guys, I think I might have figured everything out.
00:08:30I would like to enter the Miss Teen Starfire pageant.
00:08:34Maybe.
00:08:36No.
00:08:38Why not?
00:08:39The winner gets like $50,000.
00:08:41Didn't we try this once already?
00:08:43Yes, and it was a disaster.
00:08:46I'm gonna go.
00:08:50Need I remind you of the Little Miss Blue Lily fiasco of 2012?
00:08:58I was four, and I think I'm past the peeing my pants on stage phase of life.
00:09:03Why won't you let me do this?
00:09:05You're always saying how much fun pageants were and that you wouldn't be who you are today without them.
00:09:10That's true, but they're a huge commitment.
00:09:15I know.
00:09:16I looked at the website.
00:09:17It's a lot of work.
00:09:18But when has that ever bothered me?
00:09:20Honey, you have no idea what goes into all of this.
00:09:24I feel like we should stay the course and we should focus on the scholarships and the grants.
00:09:31Obviously, I'm still doing that.
00:09:34But I'm up against like a thousand people for a couple hundred dollars here and there.
00:09:38With a pageant, it's like 10 people for 50 grand.
00:09:42I mean, it kind of seems like a no-brainer to me.
00:09:45You don't just sign up for a beauty pageant and then expect you're gonna win.
00:09:49That's not how these things work.
00:09:50These girls have trained for literally years.
00:09:53They have walking coaches and interview coaches and talent coaches.
00:09:57So be my coach.
00:09:58You're always saying you want to spend more time with me.
00:10:00Now's your chance.
00:10:01Come on, Mom.
00:10:02Please.
00:10:03Okay.
00:10:04Yes!
00:10:05Yes!
00:10:06Yes!
00:10:07Yes!
00:10:08Yes!
00:10:09Yes!
00:10:10Yes!
00:10:11Yes!
00:10:12Okay, but...
00:10:13I just have to place in the top three.
00:10:15It's still pretty much impossible.
00:10:17Not when I'm the best coach in the whole wide world.
00:10:20You have drinking free sodas already today.
00:10:29Deal with it.
00:10:30And you agreed to participate in this thing willingly?
00:10:33Okay, like, no shade, but...
00:10:36You're basically the last person I ever pictured entering a beauty pageant.
00:10:40I don't know whether to feel offended or seen.
00:10:43Oh, come on.
00:10:44You know you're not really, like, pageant girl.
00:10:46And what exactly is a pageant girl?
00:10:48Uh, you know, someone with poise.
00:10:52Talent?
00:10:53Pride in their appearance.
00:10:55Wow, guys.
00:10:56Shots fired.
00:10:57Okay, don't, don't get salty.
00:10:59Alright?
00:11:00You know what we mean.
00:11:01I'm your substance, and they're...
00:11:03Not.
00:11:04But they could be.
00:11:06And maybe I'm the breath of fresh air the pageant world needs.
00:11:09Laura, have you looked at this schedule?
00:11:11I know.
00:11:12It looks way worse than it is.
00:11:13Yeah, I hope so.
00:11:14I'm gonna be a total drag to spend the last few months of high school.
00:11:17with strangers instead of your friends.
00:11:19Okay, traumatic much?
00:11:21Will I miss a hang or two here and there?
00:11:24Yes.
00:11:25But for the most part, all I have to do is throw in a dress, walk across the stage, and smile.
00:11:30How much prep can that possibly take?
00:11:31Girl, I've seen you walk in heels.
00:11:33If I were you, I'd start practicing now.
00:11:35Rude!
00:11:36So, I was thinking I should wear my hair up, because that's probably easiest, right?
00:11:43It depends.
00:11:44Are you changing clothes over your head, or are you stepping in and out on them?
00:11:47Absolutely no idea.
00:11:48Hi, Ray.
00:11:49Hi, Mrs. Burke.
00:11:50Can you just come into the living room for just a minute?
00:11:53Mom, we need to get started on our homework.
00:11:55It'll only be a minute.
00:11:56Okay?
00:11:57I thought we could try some things on and see what works best on you.
00:12:17Can you hear the footsteps calling?
00:12:24Watching through all that has fallen.
00:12:28It's time for you to reach inside and get on the ride.
00:12:34Get up and get on.
00:12:36Get on the train.
00:12:37Get on the bus.
00:12:38Don't stop.
00:12:39Let's make a chain.
00:12:41All of us.
00:12:42All of us.
00:12:43Live your life by joining in.
00:12:46The strength in numbers.
00:12:49Let's begin.
00:12:59Oh, my gosh.
00:13:00Oh, honey.
00:13:01Wow.
00:13:02Oh, my gosh.
00:13:03It has not changed at all.
00:13:06Oh, my gosh.
00:13:07Look at these photos.
00:13:09Wow.
00:13:10Oh, my gosh.
00:13:11Oh, my God.
00:13:12It's you.
00:13:13Ah!
00:13:16How are you?
00:13:17Oh, my God.
00:13:18Are you gonna let me breathe, honey?
00:13:19I'm sorry.
00:13:20I'm just so excited.
00:13:21When I saw Lauren's name on the Starfire roster next to Nora's, I couldn't believe it.
00:13:30Talk about a full circle moment.
00:13:32It really is, isn't it?
00:13:33Yes.
00:13:34Here, come on.
00:13:35Let's get you checked in.
00:13:36Oh, okay.
00:13:37Um, are you okay?
00:13:38Okay.
00:13:39Um, are you okay?
00:13:40Okay.
00:13:41Come on, honey.
00:13:42Take that seat.
00:13:43How long do you think this is gonna take?
00:13:44Um, this is probably gonna be about an hour.
00:13:45Why?
00:13:46Grace signed me up for prom committee and I have to put an agenda together for the meeting
00:13:47tomorrow.
00:13:48Do you even really want to go to prom?
00:13:49TBD.
00:13:50Oh, okay.
00:13:51Who is that?
00:13:52That is Iris Brooks.
00:13:53Ms. Brooks, to you?
00:13:54And she is Ms. Starfire.
00:13:55Trust me, you do not want to get on her bath side.
00:14:21on her bath side. Noted. Welcome, friends, to the 55th annual Miss Teen Starfire Pageant.
00:14:34I'm happy to see so many of the usual suspects, as well as a few faces I haven't seen in quite some
00:14:41time. As you know, Miss Starfire is not just a beauty pageant. It is a competition designed to
00:14:50inspire and empower young women to their greatest potential, because we believe that with hard work,
00:14:59dedication, and a little encouragement, there is nothing that cannot be achieved.
00:15:14Sorry, your mom pawned me off on you. I know we haven't seen each other in like a decade.
00:15:19NPD, this is your first pageant, right? Technically, no. Right. Well, let's hope that you last more than
00:15:2710 minutes this time. How many have you been in? I don't know, like three or four a year for 12 years,
00:15:34so however many that is. It's the same for most of these girls. We've all been on the same circuit
00:15:40together since we were like five. Wow, so you're basically an expert. Any advice? Besides get out
00:15:46while you can? I guess the first thing to remember would be all of these girls have serious main
00:15:55character energy. So there will be drama, and obviously everyone wants to win, but not necessarily
00:16:01for the same reason. I guess I just assumed everybody needs money for college like I do.
00:16:05Let me tell you, being a doctor does not come cheap. Money's definitely a big one, but then there's also
00:16:10girls like my friend Maddie, where literally everyone in her family is more on the crown.
00:16:15She's under that don't come home without it kind of pressure. Seriously? Oh yeah. People are beyond
00:16:19about this stuff. There's this one girl, Brianna, who thinks she's gonna like get discovered or
00:16:23something. No way. Oh yeah. She's convinced she's two wins away from like getting her own reality show.
00:16:31Don't be scared. I'm just telling you this so you know how mega serious people take it.
00:16:35So what should I do? Okay, there's three kinds of girls to watch out for. The liars, the criers,
00:16:41and the kleptos. So basically keep an eye on your stuff and don't believe a single thing anybody tells
00:16:48you, especially when they find out this is your first rodeo. You should be fine. Have I told you
00:16:53how great you look? What, me? I mean are you kidding? I swear you haven't aged a day. My injector is my
00:17:01emergency contact so that tells you everything you need to know. I wish I was kidding. If only I
00:17:07had the courage to age as gracefully as you. Shall we?
00:17:17Hey Nora, who's your friend? Uh Brianna, Maddie, this is Lauren. It's nice to meet you.
00:17:23You too. So, what are we talking about? Just spilling a little pageant tea. Did you see Roger's not
00:17:30judging this year? Oh, I heard he's on the flower circuit. Somebody's in trouble. What's the flower
00:17:35circuit? Hello ladies. Are we excited for these next few weeks? Yes, Ms. Brooks. Ms. Monroe, I understand
00:17:44congratulations are in order. Thank you ma'am. It wasn't a clean win though, was it? Second place in talent,
00:17:52third in evening wear. Still room for improvement. Yes ma'am. And you must be the legendary Julianne
00:18:03Simmons' daughter? Uh, I mean yes ma'am. It's Lauren's first pageant. I can tell. I'm sure your mother
00:18:15will have you squared away in no time. Maybe start with those eyebrows. So sorry to interrupt. The
00:18:24facility manager needs a word. Excuse me please. Hi Drew. Hi Drew. Ladies?
00:18:33Don't believe a word these three say.
00:18:42The prodigal grandson returns. So, temperature check? How are we feeling about all this?
00:18:52I think it's going to take a lot more time than I thought. Go ahead. I know you're dying to say.
00:19:01I don't know what you're talking about.
00:19:05But seriously, now that you have an idea about what this is going to take, are you
00:19:10sure this is something you want to do? Is that your passive aggressive way of telling me to quit?
00:19:14Honey, look. I will support you. I want to do it. I don't know. If I work really, really hard, maybe
00:19:26I could get third. And that's like 10 grand. And if I don't, I haven't really lost anything, right?
00:19:36Okay. Let's get to work. Come on.
00:19:52Yeah, they're a little unkept. And you let me walk around like this? Dude, see something, say something.
00:19:58Um, I need a caffeine infusion. Sat. Can you cover my shift today? I need to do some pageant stuff with
00:20:07my mom. Uh, yeah. What are you smiling at? Uh, do you remember that guy from the smoothie place?
00:20:19You guys are texting? Wait, has he asked you out? Uh, no, not yet. But I was hoping we could go grab
00:20:25a smoothie after a prom committee. You know, like create the opportunity. Uh, about that. Now,
00:20:33don't freak out. I don't think I'm going to be able to do the prom committee. I'm sorry. It's,
00:20:39it's the pageant between it and school and work. Something's got to give. Do you promise this isn't
00:20:44just some low-key way for you to get out of going to prom? Swear to God. Okay. Well, you can just meet
00:20:51him after the basketball game. His school's playing our school, so we're just going to hang out after.
00:20:55Hello, ladies. Ray, I just know that's not a phone I see you using. Yeah, no, no phone here.
00:21:01I just spoke to a friend who runs the research lab at the hospital. She's looking for a special
00:21:06project assistant. It's 30 bucks an hour Saturdays and Sundays, and the job is yours if you want it.
00:21:12Seriously? That sounds so rad. And like, perfect for me. Great. So, I can tell her you can start this
00:21:20weekend. Oh, uh, I'm just kind of in the middle of something right now. Is there any way I could
00:21:27start in like a month? She needs someone now, unfortunately. Really?
00:21:33I kind of have to see this other thing through. Thanks anyway.
00:21:54Okay, so today we need to pick your platform. And this is one of my favorite parts of the pageant,
00:21:58because this really tells the judges what matters most to you as a person. I want to do Red Heart MD.
00:22:06Okay. They helped me so much with my cardiomyopathy diagnosis. Yeah.
00:22:12So what now? We fill out the form? Yeah. I just have to say,
00:22:19it means so much to me that we're doing this together. Yeah, me too.
00:22:27Mom? Yeah. Are you crying? No. Stop.
00:22:35Stop. Yes, you are. I just love you.
00:22:40I've always had a dark side to me. A black hole in my heart.
00:22:50Look around and see them glowing. And I wonder where to start.
00:22:57What is this?
00:22:58Oh my god, they're huge. My mom, she borrows my bag all the time. So annoying, right?
00:23:06I like that color. Can I try it? Uh, sure.
00:23:27Have you picked your platform yet? I always do the environment. It's easy. Cool.
00:23:32I'm doing this organization that buddies up sick kids with other kids who have survived the same
00:23:37illness. I used it when I was little and seeing that I want to be a doctor and all. Kind of makes
00:23:42sense. Super. Bea, that color looks amazing. I know, right? Lauren, is it okay if I try that too?
00:23:50Yeah, sure.
00:23:53You know if there's a vending machine in the building that works? They always unplug them during the pageant
00:23:57to stop us from eating junk food. You could drink a bunch of water. It tricks your body into thinking
00:24:01that you're really full, but not too much, because then you'll bloat. It's a really fine line.
00:24:05Knock, knock. Oh, shucks. You're decent. You, more makeup. Burke, come on. You're up.
00:24:14Good luck.
00:24:18Today. Let's go.
00:24:25First, we'll film your intro video. That'll be shown at the beginning of the pageant. Then you'll do
00:24:28pre-interviews with the judges. It's the first time they're meeting you, so bring your A-game.
00:24:32No pressure there. You'll be great. Oh, hey. Just ignore what the other girls are saying about you.
00:24:38Well, what are they saying? Honestly, it's not worth repeating.
00:24:47All right, sit here. All right, look at me. Chin up. All right, no, not that much. Shoulders like this.
00:24:53Hips back, arms here. Okay. This is good. Don't move.
00:25:00Yeah. Okay, listen. I need you to look at the camera like you're trying to seduce it.
00:25:06Wait, you want me to what? Oh, please. Don't tell me you really are that naive
00:25:11nerd Brianna says you are. Wait, really? She said that? Don't be so surprised. I mean, after all,
00:25:18she kind of is a bitch, right? I guess. Yeah, this isn't working for me. I need lipstick. Can
00:25:25someone? I need red lipstick. Thank you. Put this on. If it's okay, I'd rather not. I don't really
00:25:36like red lipstick. Honey, no, no, no, no, no. It doesn't matter about what you like. It's about
00:25:39what the judge is like. And the judges like red. Okay. Do you have a mirror?
00:25:49Chin up. Pucker up. That's it.
00:26:05Perfect.
00:26:09How sad is it that she thinks she has an actual shot at winning?
00:26:37The saddest. I mean, did you hear her go on and on about that boring charity? Like,
00:26:42the judges give a crap about our platforms? I know, right?
00:26:46If you ask me, Nepo baby's in for a rude awakening. The rudest.
00:27:07Uh, it was totally him. No way. I thought it was on time out somewhere.
00:27:13All I know is that my mom saw Roger and I was having lunch today in town. That's crazy.
00:27:21How'd it go? Fine. Are you okay? Yeah, I just have to get to work.
00:27:29Okay. Drew said you called me a bitch. What? No, no, no. Save it.
00:27:39Uh, what do you think you're doing? This is my lipstick. I don't know what you're talking
00:27:43about. This is mine. I've worn this color for like years. Right, Maddie?
00:27:47Mm-hmm. For like, ever?
00:27:59What?
00:28:02Oh my god. Lauren. Lauren, stop. Lauren, seriously. What?
00:28:11Remember what I said about liars, cries, and kleptos? Brianna's kind of all three.
00:28:18I swear, I didn't call her a bitch. So what if you did? She is one.
00:28:23Seriously? How do you not just punch her in the face all the time?
00:28:27Whenever I get the urge to choose violence, I just reach up and...
00:28:34I don't know why. It makes me feel better.
00:28:37If I followed that logic, I would be bald by the end of the week.
00:28:42So, I'll see you tomorrow? Yeah, I guess so.
00:28:50Return now to a story in Woodbury, where Samuel Gompers High School...
00:28:53Honey, we're in here.
00:28:57Hey, how was rehearsal? Fine. I'm gonna go do my homework.
00:29:02In a minute, tell us about it.
00:29:06This guy, Drew, kept ordering me around.
00:29:13He just told me to look at the camera like I was trying to seduce it.
00:29:18Wait. Okay.
00:29:18He said what?
00:29:19No, it's just, it's like a figure of speech that a photographer will use sometimes.
00:29:24Whatever. Can I go do my homework?
00:29:28Yeah, I ordered pizza, so I'll let you know when it gets here, okay?
00:29:31I'm not hungry.
00:29:32Lauren, can I come in?
00:29:39Mom, I have a ton of homework.
00:29:41It'll just take a sec.
00:29:43Fine.
00:29:51Can you please stop typing and look at me?
00:29:52They're working you girls pretty hard, huh?
00:30:02It's freaking brutal, Mom.
00:30:07Yeah.
00:30:16Look, you don't have to do this if you don't want to.
00:30:34What happened to Berks? Never say die.
00:30:39All I'm saying is that there's no shame in quitting.
00:30:44Are you worried I'm gonna embarrass you or something?
00:30:48Of course not.
00:30:51Good.
00:30:52Because I'm doing it.
00:30:53I really have to do my homework.
00:31:07I love you.
00:31:09Love you, too.
00:31:19I love you, too.
00:31:37So what do we have left for the Macalester staging?
00:31:39Just a dining room set.
00:31:43Why don't we do six of these with the oval dining table we saw on aisle 12?
00:31:48Anything else?
00:31:49I think that's it.
00:31:51Oh, why don't we check out and see what they have by way of benches,
00:31:54and then let's start the paperwork.
00:31:55You got it, boss.
00:32:01Hey.
00:32:02Hey, how's it going?
00:32:03Ray says she hasn't seen much of Lauren these last few weeks.
00:32:07It has been intense.
00:32:08I swear I haven't slept more than five hours since this whole thing started.
00:32:12I noticed that Lauren hasn't made an appointment for her college wellness exam.
00:32:15You want me to make one for her?
00:32:17I think I'm gonna have to wait until this is over.
00:32:19Things have just been really crazy lately.
00:32:23Um, I'm gonna call you back.
00:32:26I'll talk to you later.
00:32:32Miss Brooks?
00:32:33Oh, hello dear.
00:32:36Hi.
00:32:36How unexpected.
00:32:39Um, can I talk to you for a minute?
00:32:42The thing is, is that Lauren has been getting home really late every night,
00:32:47and I can see the toll that it's taking on her.
00:32:50And I know that if, if she's feeling that way,
00:32:52that I'm sure the other girls are feeling that way too.
00:32:56You know you could be right.
00:32:58I'll see what I can do.
00:33:00After all, the girls' health and well-being is now and always has been our primary concern.
00:33:09You have no idea the load off my mind that that is.
00:33:13Of course.
00:33:16Now, if you'll excuse me.
00:33:18I really do have a million things to do.
00:33:21Sure.
00:33:27Ms. Burke, may I have a word with you, please?
00:33:32Yes, ma'am.
00:33:32How do you feel it's going?
00:33:38Are you acclimating well?
00:33:42Yes, ma'am.
00:33:42The reason I ask is because I ran into your mother,
00:33:47and she went on and on about all the complaints you seem to have.
00:33:52It has been my experience that complaining is a sign of weakness,
00:34:00and there is no room for weakness in my pageant.
00:34:05Do we understand each other?
00:34:08Yes, ma'am.
00:34:09Good.
00:34:12Is that your dress?
00:34:14Show me.
00:34:22Oh.
00:34:24Yes.
00:34:26I remember this one.
00:34:29It's very sweet,
00:34:32but it doesn't exactly have anything that stands out.
00:34:35Maybe a brighter color.
00:34:39Or something that shows a bit more skin.
00:34:43Sex it up a bit.
00:34:45After all,
00:34:46a higher slit and a lower neckline never hurt anything.
00:34:49Yeah.
00:35:00Oh, thank you, God.
00:35:01Everyone?
00:35:03Lauren has decided to grace us with her presence.
00:35:05We can begin.
00:35:07I'm really, really sorry. I was...
00:35:09I don't need your apology.
00:35:12I need you to be on time.
00:35:15Do you understand?
00:35:20I'd expect more from Julie Simmons' daughter.
00:35:27Places!
00:35:27A one, a two, a one, two, three, four.
00:35:38To the left.
00:35:40To the left.
00:35:40Do you idiots not know your left from your right?
00:35:46You call that a hot kick?
00:35:47I need you to do better.
00:35:58Look at those rolls.
00:36:04Sharper with the arms, ladies.
00:36:07Quick hit.
00:36:12I need those arms better, okay?
00:36:15Eyes up.
00:36:17I don't know how this is possible,
00:36:26but I think you're actually getting worse.
00:36:29That's it for today.
00:36:30Yeah.
00:36:46Attention, please.
00:36:48I, uh, found these in the dressing room.
00:36:52Just want to make sure they return to their rightful owner.
00:36:54Do they look familiar to anyone?
00:36:57Oh my goodness.
00:37:01Ew.
00:37:02Uh, we better get someone be sure I can do it for you.
00:37:04Ah, no.
00:37:07Oh my goodness.
00:37:10You better be sure!
00:37:11οΏ½οΏ½λŠ” how to go up tomorrow.
00:37:11Remove with me.
00:37:14Editor
00:37:22Can't we?
00:37:25What?
00:37:26Oh, go oh.
00:37:26Oh, oh.
00:37:27extend then.
00:37:28There you are.
00:37:45Leave me alone.
00:37:46I don't want to talk to you or anyone else.
00:37:47This whole thing was a huge mistake.
00:37:49Don't say that, okay?
00:37:50You can't quit over that guy.
00:37:51He's a total jerk.
00:37:52What about over this?
00:37:55Is that enough?
00:37:57Freaking Brianna.
00:37:58I mean, what did I do to deserve this?
00:38:00Nothing.
00:38:02But you can tell her that she wins.
00:38:04Because I'm out of here.
00:38:12Lauren, we're in here.
00:38:16How was your rehearsal?
00:38:18Long.
00:38:19Anything else?
00:38:21Not really.
00:38:23Well, you have to come and look at these photos I found of your mom and I.
00:38:26They're hilarious.
00:38:27Leave me alone.
00:38:29Hard pass.
00:38:31Lauren.
00:38:32What?
00:38:33How about homework?
00:38:34I don't care.
00:38:35I mean, you don't speak to adults like that.
00:38:37Ah, it's okay.
00:38:38She didn't mean anything by it.
00:38:41All right.
00:38:42Go do your homework.
00:38:43Hello?
00:38:59Hello?
00:38:59Um, hi.
00:39:01This is Lauren Burke.
00:39:02Oh.
00:39:03Hi, Lauren.
00:39:06Is, uh, everything okay?
00:39:08Uh, yeah.
00:39:09Yeah.
00:39:10It's fine.
00:39:10I'm sorry to bother you.
00:39:12I was just wondering about that research job you mentioned.
00:39:16My schedule's changed and I can do it now.
00:39:20Lauren, I'm really sorry, but she found someone else.
00:39:24Okay.
00:39:25Uh, yeah.
00:39:27Thanks anyway.
00:39:31Mom, I told you I'm doing my homework.
00:39:34It's Nora.
00:39:36Oh.
00:39:36Come in.
00:39:37Um, you forgot your dress.
00:39:43Oh.
00:39:44Yeah.
00:39:45Thanks.
00:39:47Looks like I'm gonna need it after all.
00:39:50Really?
00:39:50Yeah.
00:39:51Yeah.
00:39:51Except Miss Brooks basically told me that my dress was hideous and there's no way I could win wearing it.
00:39:57Let me see.
00:40:03Just say it.
00:40:04It's very...
00:40:06Glinda Goodwitch.
00:40:10But that's okay.
00:40:11Um, you could borrow my backup dress.
00:40:14It's in my car.
00:40:16Why would you help me?
00:40:18Because.
00:40:20Yeah, um, I want us to be friends when this is all over.
00:40:25Yeah, you're the only person I know in this town and it would really suck if you hated me.
00:40:34What do you say?
00:40:36Lauren.
00:40:56Lauren, we need a talk.
00:41:02What else is new?
00:41:07What is going on with you?
00:41:09Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about.
00:41:13Okay.
00:41:17What is that?
00:41:20Nora lent it to me.
00:41:21I'm going to wear it instead of your dress.
00:41:23Everybody agrees it's probably better.
00:41:25I don't look like a parade float.
00:41:28I thought you liked the idea of wearing my dress.
00:41:31But the judges like red better,
00:41:33and they're the only ones that matter,
00:41:35which is also why I'm changing my poem to The Raven.
00:41:38Two of them had it listed as their favorite in their bios,
00:41:40so I got to give the people what they want.
00:41:42Okay?
00:41:44I'm sorry, how does that tie into your platform?
00:41:47It doesn't, but platforms don't really matter.
00:41:50Yes, they do.
00:41:51Honey, they're like the most important part.
00:41:53Maybe when you were competing?
00:41:54What is going on with your attitude?
00:41:56I just don't understand why you think you know everything
00:41:59about something you haven't been a part of for the last 20 years.
00:42:01Then let me be a part of this, please.
00:42:05Okay, I will take off work tomorrow,
00:42:07and then you and I can practice your dance together, okay?
00:42:09I would have to teach it to you.
00:42:11It would take too much time.
00:42:13I'll just work on it with Nora, okay?
00:42:16Okay.
00:42:18But thanks.
00:42:21If you need anything,
00:42:22I'm here.
00:42:24Hey!
00:42:29What's up?
00:42:32What's wrong?
00:42:35Are you, like, mad at me or something?
00:42:36Huh, what an astute observation.
00:42:38Yes, I am mad at you or something.
00:42:40For what?
00:42:40You just assumed I would cover your shift without even asking me.
00:42:45I did ask you.
00:42:45Okay, but you didn't wait to see if I could actually do it.
00:42:48You just assumed that I would, because I always do.
00:42:51I told you I had plans to meet up with Dylan after the game.
00:42:54I told you that.
00:42:55Who's Dylan?
00:42:55Are you serious?
00:42:59You cannot be the self-involved.
00:43:01Oh, right.
00:43:02Yeah, the smoothie guy.
00:43:03Yeah, the smoothie guy.
00:43:05I'm sorry, okay?
00:43:05I have, like, a million things bouncing around my head right now.
00:43:08Tell me how I fix this.
00:43:10Well, you could start by loaning me your blue sweater for my date tonight.
00:43:14Done.
00:43:15I don't suppose there's any way you could pick it up from...
00:43:19I will drop it off.
00:43:20Okay.
00:43:22I really am so, so sorry.
00:43:25I guess we'll see about that.
00:43:34Good luck tomorrow.
00:43:35Oh, thanks.
00:43:37Mom, have you seen my blue sweater?
00:43:38Yeah, it's on the drying rack.
00:43:44Oh, I have something for you.
00:43:46I made chocolate chip cookies.
00:43:49I'm good.
00:43:51Since when do you not like homemade chocolate chip cookies?
00:43:53Since I have a dress to fit into.
00:43:55Okay.
00:43:59Gather round, gather round, quickly.
00:44:02Miss Brooks has some announcements.
00:44:03Unfortunately, one of our judges has had an unforeseen conflict.
00:44:08But luckily, we were able to secure a true legend.
00:44:13Please join me in welcoming to the stage,
00:44:15Mr. Roger Hammond.
00:44:29Well, thank you for that very warm welcome.
00:44:33I can't tell you how grateful I am to be back at Starfire.
00:44:39There really is no place like home.
00:44:43Now, I'll keep this short because I know that Martin is chomping at the bit to run you gals ragged.
00:44:48But I do want to wish you all good luck.
00:44:50But I do want to wish you all good luck and remind you to impress me.
00:44:55Nart, do you know him?
00:45:09Okay, everyone.
00:45:10We're starting in five minutes.
00:45:11Go practice.
00:45:14How could this be happening?
00:45:16Okay, you said you took care of this.
00:45:18You said I'd never have to see him again.
00:45:20You promised.
00:45:23How could this possibly be a good thing?
00:45:29Whatever.
00:45:31Okay, I'll just talk to you at home.
00:45:32Oh, God.
00:45:40Are you okay?
00:45:42Of course I am.
00:45:43Why wouldn't I be?
00:46:00Okay, I guess that'll have to do.
00:46:02Apparently, there have been some complaints about how late I've been keeping you.
00:46:08And I wouldn't want to get in the way of anyone's beauty sleep.
00:46:12Remember, tomorrow I need you stage ready by 5 p.m. sharp.
00:46:17Do not underestimate the amount of time some of you will need for hair and makeup.
00:46:24I cannot stress this enough.
00:46:32Dismissed.
00:46:32Dismissed.
00:46:36Oh, I know it.
00:46:40Oh, sh...
00:46:46Well, I guess it's a good thing I didn't hold my breath.
00:47:02I'm so sorry I had it, and then I got in this whole thing with my mom.
00:47:07Oh, so now it's your mom's fault.
00:47:10Right, because nothing could ever be your fault.
00:47:13Oh, my God.
00:47:13I'm sorry.
00:47:15Why are you so mad?
00:47:16It's just a stupid sweater.
00:47:17Okay, I'm not mad about a stupid sweater.
00:47:20I'm mad because you said you'd do something and then you didn't do it.
00:47:23Just like how I'm not mad that you asked me to cover your shift.
00:47:26I'm mad because you assumed something in your life was more important than anything in mine.
00:47:30That isn't you.
00:47:32You haven't been the same since you started this stupid pageant.
00:47:35I know.
00:47:40How was your date?
00:47:41I mean, not that you deserve to know, but, yeah, it was pretty much the best night of my entire life.
00:47:52I'm glad you deserve that.
00:47:55I think so, too.
00:47:59Do you want to hear about it?
00:48:01If you want to tell me.
00:48:11You okay there, Grandma?
00:48:13Yeah, just a little achy.
00:48:15I think I overdid it on my run today.
00:48:18Okay, so tell me everything.
00:48:20Don't leave out a single detail, starting with the most important part.
00:48:24Did he kiss you?
00:48:27He did?
00:48:28Was it a peck or more like a full-on makeout?
00:48:31It was like somewhere in between.
00:48:33Perfect.
00:48:35Are you going to hang out with him again?
00:48:37Yeah, we're grabbing coffee tomorrow.
00:48:38Oh, but don't worry.
00:48:39We'll be done by six.
00:48:40What's happening at six?
00:48:42Oh, duh, the pageant.
00:48:45I don't deserve a friend like you.
00:48:47Yeah, you really don't.
00:48:52Hey, are you sure you're okay?
00:48:55Yeah, I just, just a bad headache.
00:48:59But, um, I should probably go to bed.
00:49:02I'll see you tomorrow.
00:49:03Yeah.
00:49:10Hi, honey.
00:49:11Hi.
00:49:11Oh, my gosh, look at these.
00:49:14Look how beautiful you are.
00:49:17Aw.
00:49:19Honey, you are too.
00:49:21Not like you.
00:49:22Look, you are the most beautiful person.
00:49:27Inside and out.
00:49:29And I am so proud of you.
00:49:31And everything that you have accomplished and how hard you have worked.
00:49:35And regardless of what happens tomorrow, nothing will change that.
00:49:39Why do you keep pulling at your hair?
00:49:51I'm not.
00:49:53Yes, you are.
00:49:54Is it itching you or something?
00:49:55Mom, don't.
00:49:58Let me see.
00:49:59Mom, stop.
00:50:01Lauren, let me see.
00:50:02Oh, my gosh.
00:50:06Lauren.
00:50:14How did this happen?
00:50:16It's not a big deal, okay, Nora?
00:50:18Just, she accidentally burned me with a curling iron.
00:50:20That's it.
00:50:21It doesn't look like a burn.
00:50:23Why would I lie to you?
00:50:24I don't know.
00:50:26Lately, you've been doing a lot of things that don't seem like you.
00:50:29What's that supposed to mean?
00:50:30Well, the Lauren I know is independent.
00:50:34She thinks for herself.
00:50:36She's not switching her dress at the last minute.
00:50:39She's not changing a poem that means something to her to a poem that somebody else likes.
00:50:43But that's how you win.
00:50:46And isn't that the point of all of this?
00:50:48It's not supposed to feel like this.
00:50:51Honey, we were supposed to do this pageant to bring us closer together.
00:50:55Not to be at each other's throats all the time.
00:50:58Maybe this is all just too much for you to handle.
00:51:04Wait.
00:51:05Wait, what do you mean I can't handle this?
00:51:09Are you saying you're not going to let me compete?
00:51:12Are you, like, afraid I'm going to embarrass you or something?
00:51:15I'm going to, like, tarnish the memory of the great Julie Ann Simmons?
00:51:18What are you talking about?
00:51:20Mom, I have to do the pageant.
00:51:22I've only gotten two of the scholarships I've applied for.
00:51:25Two.
00:51:26That's nothing.
00:51:27The only way I'm going to be able to go to college and become a doctor is by winning Miss Starfire.
00:51:31Honey, we will figure something out.
00:51:33I promise.
00:51:34You keep saying that, but we haven't figured anything out.
00:51:37So I'm sorry if you don't like it.
00:51:40But I'm doing the pageant.
00:51:42I'm going to do whatever it takes to win.
00:51:44Maybe.
00:51:50I'm going to get you.
00:51:53I'm sorry.
00:52:15Oh my God.
00:52:17Get away, you idiot.
00:52:19Five, six, seven, eight.
00:52:23One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, one, two.
00:52:36Is this from your memories?
00:52:37Yes, it really does.
00:52:38Thank you so much, Father.
00:52:39Are you guys ready?
00:52:40Yeah.
00:52:49Why on today of all days has my skin decided to turn against me?
00:53:02Seriously?
00:53:03I can't even see it.
00:53:06Tough break about that planet growing on your face.
00:53:09Maybe my mom will have something that can fix this.
00:53:19What?
00:53:20Was I supposed to lie?
00:53:21Would it have killed you?
00:53:22Yeah.
00:53:31Hi.
00:53:33Hey.
00:53:34I wanted to wish you luck really quick.
00:53:35How are you feeling?
00:53:36Good.
00:53:37Nervous.
00:53:38Ready for it to be over?
00:53:39Is your neck okay?
00:53:40Do you still have a headache?
00:53:41Oh, yeah.
00:53:42I just...
00:53:43I slept funny or something.
00:53:44Maybe you pulled a muscle when you were making out.
00:53:46Stop.
00:53:49Attention, contestants.
00:53:50It is now 15 minutes till curtain.
00:53:53I can't believe I'm doing this.
00:53:54You're gonna be amazing.
00:53:55I'd settle for not terrible.
00:53:57Atta girl.
00:53:58Dream big.
00:53:59What's that on your arm?
00:54:02Hmm?
00:54:03Right there.
00:54:07Oh, yeah.
00:54:08Who knows?
00:54:09My mom probably just switched detergents again.
00:54:10But, um...
00:54:12Okay?
00:54:13Drink is crossed for you.
00:54:14I love you.
00:54:15Love you.
00:54:19My skin?
00:54:20Yeah.
00:54:21And you're every this way.
00:54:22Or this way.
00:54:23Give me a smile.
00:54:24Hey, where's Nora?
00:54:25I haven't seen her.
00:54:26Okay, wait.
00:54:27This?
00:54:28You might need a floss.
00:54:29What?
00:54:36I'm so...
00:54:37Surprised but happy to see you here today.
00:54:41You've grown up into such a beautiful young woman.
00:54:45What do you want?
00:54:46You know what I want.
00:54:48I want you to promise me that you're not gonna give me any more trouble.
00:54:52Not like last time.
00:54:54I need to hear you say it.
00:55:00I promise.
00:55:02Good.
00:55:03Answer.
00:55:06That wasn't so hard now, was it?
00:55:10There you are.
00:55:11I've been looking for you everywhere.
00:55:13They're just called places.
00:55:14Well, you should go.
00:55:15Iris hates a late start.
00:55:25Nora.
00:55:27Nothing happened.
00:55:28Okay, we both know that's not true.
00:55:30You have to tell someone.
00:55:31Who would I even tell?
00:55:32I don't know.
00:55:33Maybe your mom or Miss Brooks?
00:55:35Like, that would make a difference.
00:55:36It might.
00:55:37Why would this time be any different than all the others?
00:55:40Nothing ever happens to people like him.
00:55:43Okay, they disappear until enough time has passed that people don't even remember why they were gone in the first place.
00:55:50Just forget about it.
00:55:52That's what I'm gonna do.
00:55:53But how can you let this go?
00:56:00Because you're not the only one that needs the money.
00:56:07Let's hear it for your Miss Starfire contestants.
00:56:10We trust in.

01:00:28Ray, I know I can always count on you
01:00:30Uh, actually, Mr. Burke, I'm not feeling so great right now
01:00:33Uh, I think I should just call my mom and have her come pick me up

01:01:19Oh, no
01:01:20Nora knows how to handle herself
01:01:21I made sure of that
01:01:22But she shouldn't have to, should she?
01:01:26What am I supposed to do?
01:01:28Ever quit the circuit?
01:01:29That is not an option
01:01:31So you're saying that this does happen?
01:01:34I'm saying
01:01:35How about you take care of your kid and I'll take care of mine?

01:02:09What are you gonna do about it?
01:02:13Nora asked me not to say anything
01:02:14Well, Nora's a smart girl
01:02:17The question is

01:03:52I am 100
01:03:522
01:03:53I am 100
01:03:53I am 100
01:03:54Pay そ
01:03:55Even converses
01:03:56Indicate
01:03:56she could use this thanks i just i don't understand how this is happening
01:04:07she had a headache i gave her some medicine she went back to bed it's just a headache
01:04:13she's gonna be okay what if she's not
01:04:18miss kippins i'm dr mullen i'm the attending physician on your daughter's case
01:04:24i just want to give you a quick update on what we know so based on ray's age symptoms and how
01:04:30rapidly her case has progressed as well as the preliminary results of the spinal tap
01:04:34we suspect she has meningococcal meningitis which is a type of bacterial meningitis and a bloodstream
01:04:40infection it's called invasive meningococcal disease and while it's uncommon it can have
01:04:46serious consequences oh my god we will be able to confirm once we get the final test results in
01:04:52the coming days but she was vaccinated i made sure of it according to her record she was
01:04:58vaccinated for serial groups a c w and y but not b at this time we cannot confirm what serial
01:05:05group is responsible here how did i miss this i'm a nurse a lot of teens aren't vaccinated
01:05:11against meningitis b but there are vaccines that can help and not all parents know to ask about
01:05:16them so do we know how this happened to her there are so many possibilities the bacteria can live in
01:05:23the back of the nose and throat and can spread through respiratory droplets 16 to 23 year olds tend
01:05:28to be one of the most affected groups simply by the nature of their activities like what kind of
01:05:33activities sharing food drinks utensils kissing just generally being in close contact with one
01:05:39another are you saying this is like her own fault no no honey nobody is saying that so what do we do
01:05:46next what's the plan if her condition continues to worsen we may need to put her into a medically
01:05:52induced coma to make it easier to treat her and to ensure that she gets the rest that her body needs
01:05:57currently we have her on intravenous antibiotics in the hopes that it helps fight the infection
01:06:02that's good though right the medicine will make her better that's what we're hoping for sweetie
01:06:08miss gibbons i need you to understand how incredibly sick ray is one in ten people who contract
01:06:19meningitis die despite treatment sometimes within 24 hours and even if she survives there is a chance
01:06:27that she will have permanent complications we're going to do everything we can for ray but i just
01:06:34want you to be fully aware of all the possible outcomes is there anything more that we should be doing
01:06:43we've alerted the health department and they'll reach out to the school to do contact tracing that
01:06:48will help determine who may have been in close contact with ray and need antibiotics to help prevent
01:06:53any additional cases expect a call from them in the meantime make a list of anyone ray's come into
01:06:59close contact with in the last week or so i'd recommend that both you and she start a precautionary
01:07:06course of antibiotics immediately and if she has not been vaccinated consider speaking with her
01:07:13pediatrician about it of course i'll give you an update as soon as i have one okay and again i'm so very sorry
01:07:23thank you so much for squeezing us in today and i'll book the appointment for the next dose before we leave
01:07:47thanks
01:07:49mom what's that honey
01:07:55is there really a chance that rica die
01:08:00the doctors are going to do everything that they can to make sure that doesn't happen okay
01:08:09but she still might
01:08:13can i come in
01:08:33close the door
01:08:37i assume you're here to discuss the unfortunate incident of last night
01:08:48i guess that's one way to put it
01:08:51i just thought you'd want to notify the other contestants
01:08:54actually anybody in attendance i guess should be made aware of the situation
01:08:59why on earth would i want to do that
01:09:01are we talking about the same thing
01:09:05i don't know are we
01:09:07what are you talking about
01:09:09well
01:09:11i guess you first
01:09:15last night i happened upon lauren and one of our judges together
01:09:20and seeing how lauren is an inexperienced young woman
01:09:24i can see how she mistook his offer of advice as an inappropriate advance
01:09:30i have no doubt with lauren's propensity to
01:09:34exaggerate
01:09:36okay but just wait a minute
01:09:37she has probably already blown the entire situation completely out of proportion
01:09:43which is why i feel it best and in her best interest that she withdraw from the pageant
01:09:51in exchange for agreeing to never discuss the event
01:09:57the pageant will offer lauren a miss congeniality scholarship in the amount of ten thousand dollars
01:10:04but lauren hasn't done anything wrong why should she have to quit
01:10:08because i'm not going to allow some rat who is never going to win anyway ruin it for everyone else
01:10:18so i suggest you get down from your high horse and take my incredibly generous offer
01:10:25so we can all get on with our lives
01:10:29i can't wait to show this to the police
01:10:39i wouldn't do that if i were you
01:10:43why is that
01:10:44because
01:10:45if you decide to involve the authorities
01:10:48i will have no choice
01:10:50but to issue a statement announcing
01:10:52that lauren was disqualified when it came to my knowledge that she attempted to blackmail
01:10:58a pageant employee
01:11:00what the hell are you talking about
01:11:02lauren
01:11:04threatened
01:11:06to go public with this
01:11:07photo
01:11:08unless drew
01:11:10used his influence with the judges
01:11:12to obtain a better position
01:11:14no one will ever
01:11:18believe this
01:11:19maybe not
01:11:21if it's just his word against hers
01:11:23but luckily
01:11:24i have several witnesses with sworn affidavits
01:11:28that say she confided her plan in them
01:11:31just think what people will say
01:11:34and i've even heard that some colleges
01:11:38have been known to rescind acceptances for moral transgressions
01:11:42now would you like to borrow my pen
01:11:46i don't know how you live with yourself
01:11:53starfire is my legacy
01:11:59i will protect it at all costs
01:12:01the clock is ticking on that offer
01:12:05i hate to ask this
01:12:16but is there even the tiniest shred of truth to any of what iris is saying
01:12:20mom i swear
01:12:21brianna made that picture
01:12:23and hung it in the dressing room to try to get me to quit
01:12:25we need to know everything that has gone on
01:12:27and i mean everything
01:12:29please
01:12:30there's a lot
01:12:36and
01:12:37it's kind of hard to explain
01:12:39it's like they're manipulating you
01:12:42all the time
01:12:44they're always telling you the other girls are talking about you behind your back
01:12:47or the coaches are calling us stupid or lazy
01:12:51wait they're what
01:12:52the truth is
01:12:54this kind of stuff
01:12:56it does happen
01:12:58why didn't you tell me any of this
01:13:00because i knew you'd make me quit
01:13:01i just i couldn't
01:13:04i'd already worked so hard
01:13:06and i'd sacrificed so much
01:13:08to just walk away from my only shot
01:13:11at being able to afford vanderton
01:13:13baby i'm sorry you felt so much pressure
01:13:16so
01:13:18what do we do
01:13:19i think
01:13:21if ray can fight
01:13:24so can i

01:13:45isn't it obvious
01:13:47lauren's a finalist
01:13:48she's here to compete
01:13:50you're embarrassing yourself
01:13:52i'm not embarrassed
01:13:55are you embarrassed
01:13:56no
01:13:56no i think
01:13:58the only one that should be embarrassed
01:14:00is you
01:14:01who can't seem to wipe his own ass
01:14:04without his grandmother's permission
01:14:05you're making a scene
01:14:08not yet
01:14:10but i will
01:14:11and those little reporters over there
01:14:13are gonna get a front row seat
01:14:15excuse us
01:14:17as the kids would say
01:14:37that slaps
01:14:38let's hear one more time
01:14:39for miss brianna cox
01:14:41thanks
01:14:41congratulations brianna
01:14:43now for the final portion of our talent competition
01:14:47we have a dramatic recitation
01:14:50put your hands together for miss lauren burke
01:14:52i'd like to dedicate my performance tonight
01:15:02to my friend ray
01:15:04who's in the icu
01:15:06fighting for her life with meningitis b
01:15:08and if that's the case
01:15:11maybe asking why i'm here
01:15:13participating in this
01:15:15for being honest
01:15:17pretty superficial event
01:15:19if you knew me
01:15:21you'd know
01:15:22none of this
01:15:23is my vibe
01:15:25the only reason i entered starfire in the first place
01:15:28was because i needed money for college
01:15:30then i just
01:15:32got so sucked into it
01:15:34i was basically obsessed
01:15:36it was only when ray got sick
01:15:39that i remembered that i was trying to win
01:15:41so that i could become a doctor and help people
01:15:44so
01:15:45that's why i'm here
01:15:47it's for you
01:15:48to share ray's story
01:15:51and hope it will inspire parents
01:15:53to check their teens vaccination records
01:15:55and talk to their doctors
01:15:57and now
01:16:00showtime
01:16:02originally i was going to recite the raven
01:16:05but then i thought
01:16:07does anyone really need to hear
01:16:10the alcoholic ramblings
01:16:11of a man who's obsessed with his ex
01:16:13and can't seem to take the hint
01:16:15so instead
01:16:18i will be reciting
01:16:20the things we dare not tell
01:16:22by henry lawson
01:16:23because no one should have to suffer in silence
01:16:30the fields are fair
01:16:40and autumn yet
01:16:41and the sun's still shining there
01:16:44but we bow our heads
01:16:46and brood and fret
01:16:48because of the mask we wear
01:16:50or we nod and smile
01:16:53a social while
01:16:54and say we're doing well
01:16:56we break our hearts
01:16:59for the things
01:17:00we must not tell
01:17:01we fight it down
01:17:03or we bear it bravely well
01:17:05but the best of us
01:17:10die
01:17:11of a broken heart
01:17:12for the things
01:17:14we cannot tell
01:17:16that was amazing
01:17:31my mom made me sign that thing
01:17:37i know
01:17:39how's ray
01:17:40her fever's coming down
01:17:43but she's still super sick
01:17:45we just wait
01:17:46to see if the medicine works
01:17:48i'm taking antibiotics
01:17:50yeah
01:17:51um
01:17:52we all got a text about it
01:17:54my mom made an appointment for me
01:17:56good
01:17:56what happens now
01:17:58i think it's the judge's questions
01:18:01let me double check
01:18:03hey austin
01:18:05you got a program
01:18:07starfire is truly
01:18:13a one-of-a-kind experience
01:18:15and i could not be more grateful
01:18:18for the time that we've spent together
01:18:20but now
01:18:22we are entering the final portion
01:18:25of tonight's evening
01:18:26the all-important
01:18:27judge's questions
01:18:29i'd like to invite maddie
01:18:31up to the microphone first
01:18:33maddie's question will be coming
01:18:39from the esteemed
01:18:40gwendoline allen
01:18:42ms monroe
01:18:43who is your role model
01:18:45mrs brooks
01:18:52short sweet and to the point
01:19:01up next we have
01:19:03miss lauren burke
01:19:05lauren's question will be coming
01:19:12from starfire's most revered
01:19:14and longest serving judge
01:19:16mr roger hammond
01:19:18ms brook
01:19:20why should you win
01:19:23i shouldn't
01:19:29and what's more
01:19:33i don't want to
01:19:35i don't want to be part of an organization
01:19:38that pits us against each other
01:19:39for their own entertainment
01:19:40who calls us fat
01:19:42and lazy
01:19:43and makes us so anxious
01:19:45that we literally pull our own hair out
01:19:47who upon learning there were criminals
01:19:49in their midst
01:19:50chose to protect
01:19:51the predators rather than the children they preyed upon
01:19:54those are not the values i was raised with
01:19:56and they are not the values i represent
01:19:57life is too short to compromise yourself for some cash in the crown
01:20:01and that is why
01:20:06i respectfully
01:20:07withdraw
01:20:09from the miss starfire pageant

01:22:08and you know obviously
01:22:09um

01:23:11found a lot of impropriety
01:23:12like a lot
01:23:13shocker
01:23:14um
01:23:15and rather than
01:23:16deal with like
01:23:17a million civil suits
01:23:18starfire's just decided
01:23:20to settle with everyone
01:23:21and i figured
01:23:23after all you did
01:23:24um
01:23:24it's only fair
01:23:26you get half of mine
01:23:26wow
01:23:33my first impulse
01:23:40was to tear it up
01:23:42and what was your second impulse
01:23:44i thought about
01:23:47when i first decided
01:23:48to do the pageant
01:23:49and we talked about
01:23:50what i might gain
01:23:51from the experience
01:23:52oh yeah
01:23:55don't remind me
01:23:56but that's the thing
01:23:57i gained so much
01:24:00just
01:24:01not in the ways
01:24:03that
01:24:03we thought it would be
01:24:04so
01:24:07when you think about it
01:24:09i kind of won
01:24:12yeah
01:24:13kind of did
01:24:15and
01:24:17you know
01:24:18what i said
01:24:19i would
01:24:19use the money for

01:24:25vanderton
01:24:26please welcome
01:24:45ms lauren burke
01:24:47first of all
01:25:03i want to thank you
01:25:04for letting me come talk today
01:25:06for anyone who doesn't know me
01:25:08my name is lauren burke
01:25:09and i'm freshman pre-med
01:25:11and if everything goes according to plan
01:25:13future pediatrician
01:25:15professor holsey told me
01:25:17about the work you all do
01:25:18in terms of student health awareness
01:25:20and thought the app i created
01:25:22might be a helpful tool for you to use
01:25:24about a year ago
01:25:26my best friend almost died
01:25:28from meningitis b
01:25:30and watching her go through that
01:25:33it made me realize
01:25:34that people our age
01:25:36are so focused on the future
01:25:39that we sometimes forget
01:25:41how to keep ourselves healthy today
01:25:43so that is where
01:25:46healthybridge.org comes in
01:25:47healthybridge.org tells you
01:25:50exactly what health services
01:25:51you may need
01:25:52and where you can find them
01:25:54and make sure you can get
01:25:55accurate information
01:25:57and know the right questions to ask
01:25:59so you can make informed decisions
01:26:00about your mental
01:26:01and your physical health
01:26:02so nothing
01:26:03and no one
01:26:05falls through the cracks
01:26:06any questions
01:26:08any questions
01:26:08or no
01:26:22then
01:26:22and
