During the Civil War, she served as a Union Army scout, nurse, and spy, and led the Combahee River Raid, liberating over 700 enslaved people—the first woman to lead a U.S. military operation.
In her later years, she fought for women’s suffrage and cared for the elderly in her Auburn, New York home.
