Poser (2021) is an indie drama that follows a young woman who immerses herself in an underground music scene, seeking connection and creative inspiration. As she begins to document the lives of local artists, her admiration turns into imitation, leading to questions about identity, authenticity, and self-expression. With a moody atmosphere and strong performances, the film explores the fine line between influence and originality.

00:05:03These groups can be a bit elusive at times, non-conformists, playing unmarketed shows in spotty basements and seedy venues.
00:05:13When I'm at these shows, I see how music connects people.
00:05:19I see these artists on stage, I see these artists on stage, a certain kind of tenacity that almost feels superhuman.
00:05:27For this podcast, I see these artists on stage, tune in each week for exclusive interviews and performances with some of the best underground musicians in the city.
00:05:37With some of the best underground musicians in the city.
00:05:47With some of the best underground musicians in the city, my name is Lennon Gates.
00:05:53Do you mind if I interview you for the best underground musicians in the city.
00:06:03Do you mind if I interview you for my podcast?
00:06:07Do you mind if I interview you for the best underground musicians in the city?
00:06:09No, I'm good.
00:06:11I am the man in the city.
00:06:13I am the man in the city.
00:06:15Bitch, I am the man in the city.
00:06:17I am the man in the city.
00:06:18You are the man in the city.
00:06:19You know God and and my friend.
00:06:20You are the staff, remember, Tim, you're the one.
00:06:22I am the man in the city.
00:06:23The group of conservatives listen into the city.
00:06:27Two men live in the city.
00:06:30They weren't white and it's not black.
00:06:32Do you want some home?
00:06:57Want any tea?
00:06:58No, thank you.
00:07:02So, um, I'm Lennon.
00:07:18My podcast is basically just, like, about the local music scene, and I, like, interview underground musicians.
00:07:26Um, so I guess basically I'm just going to ask you some questions about music and art and yourselves.
00:07:35I think that comes across a lot more in some of the current material that we're working on right now.
00:07:39Um, we're in the process of completing a full-length album.
00:07:41Mm, Oscillations.
00:07:42Oscillations.
00:07:43It was this past summer.
00:07:45It was record heat.
00:07:47And I made my way over to the creek in our backyard.
00:07:50And I just spent hours watching the water flow through the rocks.
00:07:59And I remember having this profound realization that us and everything around us are composed of atoms oscillating in and around us.
00:08:15Mm, yes.
00:08:17Yeah.
00:08:19So that's slated for fall of 2026 release, so we're excited about that.
00:08:22Have you guys been on a podcast before?
00:08:35And I want to tell you that you could be my muse.
00:08:40I never, ever want you to wonder if I'm the only one for you.
00:08:47Because I want to be your woman.
00:08:49Can you describe your genre?
00:08:52Queer death pop.
00:08:54Experimental indie?
00:08:55Experimental pop.
00:08:57I think we call ourselves indie folk.
00:08:58I guess I'd just be alternative.
00:09:00Uh, I'm in a, I'm in a duo.
00:09:02We don't really identify as a band.
00:09:04That would seem like kind of a weird thing to call ourselves.
00:09:06Our genre is junkyard bop or family band.
00:09:12Um, like if your really strange relative was a band.
00:09:15My art is super, super colorful and super fun.
00:09:24Been the proverbial door to my self-indignation.
00:09:30Instead of you, I belong here.
00:09:35I want to be your woman.
00:09:38I want to be your man.
00:09:41Give you all my money.
00:09:44Show you all my plans.
00:09:47I'm never gonna leave you lonely, babe.
00:09:50I'm never gonna leave you sad, babe.
00:09:53I want to be your honey.
00:09:56I want to be your guy.
00:09:58All right, here's another new one.
00:10:03This one's unreleased.
00:10:11I've been trying to push myself outside of my comfort zone more.
00:10:18Is that why we came here?
00:10:22I saw Jen Sang post about it.
00:10:25Who's Jen Sang?
00:10:26I've been wanting to tell you.
00:10:31I've been booking more interviews lately.
00:10:34So I probably won't be able to see you as much in the next few months.
00:10:39We don't really see much of each other anyway.
00:10:46How's mom?
00:10:47I don't know.
00:10:48Why don't you call her?
00:10:49Why doesn't she call me?
00:10:53Who's Jen Sang?
00:10:54She's a politically driven musician.
00:11:02Isn't that like a tea or something?
00:11:04No, she's a politically driven musician.
00:11:07Are you still working at Philip Arthur's?
00:11:10Yeah.
00:11:12But I haven't been taking as many hours.
00:11:14Does Mike still work at Philip Arthur's?
00:11:19I've been looking for a new apartment.
00:11:21Where?
00:11:23I don't know.
00:11:25I want more space to be creative.
00:11:29And like, where the bedroom is the same room as the kitchen.
00:11:33So like a studio apartment?
00:11:36Yeah, like a studio apartment.
00:11:38Can I get you guys another drink?
00:11:40Um, no thanks.
00:11:41We'll take the check.
00:11:42And you can put both of them online.
00:11:43Got it.
00:11:47Can I try yours?
00:11:49Sure, whatever.
00:11:49You know, when I used to work at Philip Arthur's, we literally only had eight people on the whole staff.
00:11:56And we did one event every weekend.
00:11:58Now he's like running every event for the whole freaking town.
00:12:11Stretching sleeves.
00:12:12That we're never meant to be long.
00:12:16Asking myself.
00:12:18Do good people do this?
00:12:20And am I one?
00:12:22So we try again.
00:12:24And again.
00:12:26Fade to black.
00:12:27With lust.
00:12:29Maybe lost.
00:12:31Maybe need more time.
00:12:33Remembering.
00:12:34The sticky things.
00:12:37Mostly.
00:12:38How sweet our tongues used to be.
00:12:42Thanks for letting me record that.
00:12:52I've never been on a podcast before.
00:12:56As a producer, I go for a real lo-fi sound.
00:13:00I strive to capture honesty in the musicians I record.
00:13:06I'm a songwriter, too.
00:13:10Dope.
00:13:11I've been looking for ways to break into the music scene.
00:13:14I don't really perform, though.
00:13:19I just have, like, notebooks filled with lyrics.
00:13:23Do you have anything I can read?
00:13:25Yeah.
00:13:26I have a few songs written.
00:13:34This is my journal.
00:13:35You'll be the one I'll admit when I've grown.
00:13:45And I long to forget everything that I know.
00:13:48But I still have miles and miles to go.
00:13:52This stuff is good.
00:13:54I have a lot of other songs, too.
00:13:56Um, I gotta go.
00:14:01Thanks.
00:14:01Thanks.
00:14:01Thanks.
00:14:01So we try again, and again.
00:14:31How sweet our tongues used to be.
00:14:34How sweet our tongues used to be.
00:14:47Four years ago, the TAC Gallery was shut down.
00:15:16The space was originally used as a meat factory, but after the building closed, bands began using the empty rooms to play shows.
00:15:25In the spring of 2016, an underage kid named Danny Brooks got drunk at a show.
00:15:36He stumbled outside and fell asleep on the railroad tracks, which ran behind the building.
00:15:40The owner, an older man named Ed Flock, was forced to close the space after Danny Brooks' body was fatally run over by a train.
00:15:50Shortly after, Ed was arrested for tax evasion.
00:15:58The city took control of the space, and the factory remained empty and unused for three years, until Ed's nephew, Randy Flock, gained ownership.
00:16:07Next Friday, the TAC Gallery will open its doors once again for a secret show at 9 p.m.
00:16:14I'll see you all there.

00:49:49I'm here with Bobby Kitten, the lead singer for the band Damn the Witch Siren.
00:49:56Yo, yo, yo.
00:49:57What's up, Lennon listeners?
00:49:59She's wearing a large fur coat.
00:50:02Looks like it could be bear fur.
00:50:06Is that bear fur?
00:50:07God, no.
00:50:09Lennon, have you been paying attention at all?
00:50:11Well, this is a fake fur coat.
00:50:15I repeat, fake fur coat.
00:50:18I do not condone the slaughter of poor innocent creatures.
00:50:21Okay, okay.
00:50:22Except if it's a fish.
00:50:24Stop.
00:50:26Okay.
00:50:28So, when you're writing, do you feel like your fan base influences your writing?
00:50:35Well, I mean, I think it used to a lot more when I first started out.
00:50:40I started this band wanting to write dance music because nobody in this town is, like,
00:50:46writing dance music.
00:50:47I just wanted people to have fun, you know?
00:50:49Feel like they could enjoy themselves.
00:50:52But lately, I just feel, I don't know, like I'm writing more emotional stuff.
00:50:58Stuff that gets me really excited.
00:51:01I'm writing stuff for myself.
00:51:03And my cat.
00:51:05So, what are you working on now?
00:51:11Um, yeah, so I've been writing stuff on the piano.
00:51:15I'm really proud of, like, all these words that are coming out of me, you know?
00:51:21And I'm hoping to collaborate with my girl, Lennon, who is an incredible writer.
00:51:27Okay.
00:51:28I'm going to edit that out.
00:51:30Don't.
00:51:31Why would you do that?
00:51:33Seriously, you should be proud of that shit.
00:51:36It's one of the best things about you.
00:51:38What?
00:51:39Your art.
00:51:40Your ideas.
00:51:42A lot of people don't have shit to say.
00:51:45And you do.
00:51:46And it's important.
00:51:47So, what's the best thing about Bobby Kitten?
00:51:54I don't want to do that.
00:51:56No, seriously.
00:51:58What's your favorite thing about yourself?
00:52:00I want to know.
00:52:01This scene has a tendency of shifting from day to day.
00:52:17A perpetual pursuit for something new.
00:52:21A true musician pushes boundaries in every way possible.
00:52:24Using their art as a platform for something completely original.
00:52:35Those in the scene know this.
00:52:37I want to know.
00:52:37It's a story.
00:52:46It's a story.
00:52:46I want to know.
00:52:49I want to know.
00:52:50I want to know.
00:56:27Can't be tamed but I want you to know that you're the closest that I've been to home and that's all I've wanted all along.
00:56:44I love it.
00:56:48It's amazing.
00:56:49You should totally record this.
00:56:51I mean, you really got something then.
00:56:55Like...
00:56:56I just worry about what people will think and like sharing that kind of stuff feels so intimate.
00:57:05Well, it is.
00:57:06I mean, that's why it inspires people.
00:57:09Being real.
00:57:11You should totally record this.
00:57:12Well, it is.
00:57:13I mean, that's why it inspires people.
00:57:14Being real.
00:57:15You should totally record this.
00:57:16Well, it is.
00:57:17I mean, that's why it inspires people.
00:57:20Being real.
00:57:21Being real.
00:57:22You should totally record this.
00:57:23You should totally record this.
00:57:28Well, it is.
00:57:29I mean, that's why it inspires people.
00:57:30Being real.
00:57:31You should totally record this.
00:57:32Well, it is.
00:57:33I mean, that's why it inspires people.
00:57:36Being real.
00:57:58I mean, that's why it is.
00:58:00It was tooη
00:58:08I mean.
00:58:09I keep on mine.
00:58:11That's why.
00:58:12I want her to have to go there,
00:58:26Enjoy the time I have left
00:58:28I'm so tired of begging you for a slice of that light
00:58:33Cause baby you know that I'm the one who rules the night
00:58:38I'll have your reason to make it while I'm
00:58:51Beating like a bat beneath the stars
00:58:54You want a bitch you can cut like the greenery
00:58:56Baby I come alive in the dark
00:58:58I love the sound of your voice
00:59:13I hate the sound of my voice

01:03:41I got some new music to share, and it's a blessing.
01:03:45I'm excited.
01:03:46Let's go.
01:03:47Woo!
01:03:47Hey!
01:03:48Hey!
01:03:49How'd you get us?
01:03:50Oh!
01:03:52So we're going a new direction.
01:03:54We just got noise complaining trying to kick us out.
01:03:57What great things are marred with words, only intended to fill the void.
01:04:07Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, I am that second mouse.
01:04:11Butter mouse!
01:04:12Say hi.
01:04:15Hi.
01:04:15Hi!
01:04:16Hey!
01:04:17I don't know.
01:04:18Thank you so much for the U.I.D. for the new song.
01:04:23Thank you so much for the U.I.D. for the new song.
01:04:39Hey.
01:04:41It's a Pinot Noir.
01:04:42Pinot Noir.
01:04:43I feel like right now, it's my Pinot face.
01:04:46But, I've been kind of down all summer life.
01:04:49I don't think I was really so interested in it.
01:04:52Go your own way, honey.
01:04:56Go your own way, love.
01:05:00Go your own way, honey.
01:05:05Don't keep hanging on.
01:05:08You'll be the one I lament when I've grown and I long to forget everything that I know.
01:05:18But, I've still got miles and miles to go.
01:05:23It makes no difference, honey.
01:05:43It makes no difference, love.
01:05:48It makes no difference, honey.
01:05:51No difference at all.
01:05:57Can't be tamed, but I want you to know that
01:06:02You're the closest that I've been to home.
01:06:06And that's all I wanted all along.
01:06:11Can't be tamed, but I want you to know that
01:06:12You're the closest to me, everybody.
01:06:13And that's all I wanted to know.
01:06:14He's my Cade.
01:06:15And I want you to know that
01:06:16You're the closest to me.
01:06:17I know, baby.
01:06:18You're the closest to me, are you to my place?
01:06:19I know.
01:06:20It's two ways you can hear me.
01:06:20I know, baby.
01:06:21I know.
01:06:21This is my place.
01:06:22I know, baby.
01:06:23Maybe, uh, baby.
01:06:23I know, baby.
01:06:24I know.
01:06:24I know, you're the closest to me.
01:06:25I know, baby.
01:06:25I know.
01:06:25Go your own way, honey
01:06:44Go your own way, love
01:06:49Go your own way, honey
01:06:53You told me nothing at all
01:06:58I'm out of luck and I'm letting it show
01:07:03I'm out of luck and I'm letting you know
01:07:07That I could never be where you belong
01:07:23I'm out of luck and I'm letting you know
01:07:28I'm out of luck and I'm letting you know
01:07:32I'm out of luck and I'm letting you know
01:07:36I'm out of luck and I'm letting you know
01:07:54Listen, I'm not gonna call anyone out by name
01:08:20Or anything like that
01:08:21But there's some fake-ass musicians out there
01:08:25And I gotta get this off my chest
01:08:27Trust me, I really do
01:08:28And the thing is, I guess that I'm most pissed off about
01:08:31Is because I thought I was a good judge of character
01:08:33No, I really did
01:08:34So
01:09:16Hey, Bobby.
01:09:37It's Lennon.
01:09:46You haven't been responding.
01:09:50I just want to make sure.
01:09:56Are we okay?
01:10:01Hello?
01:10:03Bobby?
01:10:04I don't want to do that.
01:10:19No, seriously.
01:10:21What's your favorite thing about yourself?
01:10:23I want to know.
01:10:24I feel confident.
01:10:36I have stuff to say.
01:10:39And...
01:10:40I don't know.
01:10:43I guess I feel really sure of myself.
01:10:45And I like that I don't ever have to second-guess myself, you know?
01:10:58Here.
01:10:58Oh, let me hold this.
01:11:00You bitch, come on.
01:11:02All right.
01:11:02Just like...
01:11:03You know what I mean?
01:11:04Like, you know...
01:11:04I don't...
01:11:05Come on.
01:11:05And then we can build up after that.
01:11:08Come on.
01:11:09You're too shy.
01:11:10You're too shy.
01:11:11Free yourself.
01:11:13I don't give a fuck.
01:11:15One day.
01:11:16I don't give a fuck!
01:11:18I don't give a fuck!
01:11:21I don't give a fuck!
01:11:22I don't give a fuck!

01:11:25I don't give a fuck!
01:11:25I don't give a fuck!
01:11:26I don't give a fuck!
01:11:26I don't give a fuck!
01:11:27I don't give a fuck!
01:11:27I don't give a fuck!
01:11:28I don't give a fuck!
01:11:28I don't give a fuck!
01:11:29I don't give a fuck!
01:11:29I don't give a fuck!
01:11:30I don't give a fuck!
01:11:30I don't give a fuck!
01:11:31I don't give a fuck!
01:11:31I don't give a fuck!

01:12:33I don't know.
01:13:03I don't know.
01:13:33I don't know.
01:13:37My intention for my podcast is to explore this city's underground music scene.
01:13:43It is my intention for my podcast to explore this city's underground music.
01:13:52Following cutting-edge artists, following cutting-edge musicians...
01:14:05I intend to capture a true, a true depiction of...
01:14:15I...
01:14:22I belong here.
01:14:29I don't know.
01:14:30I don't know.
01:14:44I don't know.
01:17:53I've never even listened to one of your podcasts.
01:18:00Why have you been ignoring me?
01:18:12Hey, you bring your journal with you, Lennon?
01:18:16Yes.
01:18:19And all those words in there.
01:18:24You wrote those?
01:18:26Yes.
01:18:30You know, I know you stole that song.
01:18:35I don't know what you're talking about.
01:18:37Wait, you think you're just going to play it off like you wrote all those songs, like no one's going to find out.
01:18:45What are you going to do?
01:18:46You know, I'm going to tell everyone.
01:18:48You know that, right?
01:18:50Do you steal my songs, too?
01:18:52No.
01:18:53Let me see your journal, then.
01:18:55Let me see your journal, then.
01:18:57Why?
01:18:58Because I want to see it.
01:18:59Stop!
01:19:10Stop!
01:19:10Stop!
01:19:10You know, what?
01:19:20I know you got to
01:19:28lot of details.
01:19:32Oh, my God.
01:20:02This scene has a tendency of shifting from day to day.
01:20:09I suppose that's why I began this podcast.
01:20:13To collect inspiration, to observe artists and their creativity, their originality, and
01:20:23to push myself outside of my comfort zone.
01:20:32Now, I finally feel confident.
01:20:40I have stuff to say.
01:20:43And I guess I feel really sure of myself.
01:20:48And I like that I never have to second-guess myself.
01:20:50I know I don't have that many listeners.
01:20:55To those of you who do listen, thank you.
01:20:58To those of you who do listen, thank you.
