Transcript
00:00We're here with headteacher of Arkelwood. Introduce yourself, sir.
00:03My name's Nicholas Murphy and I'm the principal of Arkelwood Academy.
00:05And Mr Mayor?
00:06Reg Snell, I'm the councillor from Wellington, Wellington Town Mayor.
00:11And used to be on the governing board here, so a long history with a school.
00:14I was for 20 years, a long time ago, but I was 20 years, and my four children all went here,
00:21and all were very successful, and it's interesting and it's wonderful to see how the school's progressed.
00:27So, what is the Arkel Sparkle? What's the idea behind it?
00:32So, the Arkel Sparkle is a culmination of our character education that we run at the school.
00:38For us, we want to equally invest in the academic rigour and the classroom experiences that the children get,
00:45but we also want to invest within their character.
00:49For us, it's really, really important that we develop those holistic skills,
00:52and we give our children an opportunity to thrive as a result of those.
00:57So, as a result, we've got our values, which are Impair, Respect and Aspire,
01:01and that has helped, and those values have helped drive our character education framework.
01:06So, each term, the students work towards a value, so it started with respect, moved into Appair, we're now on Aspire.
01:12So, we're here at Arkelwood School, Wellington, and we're with pupils, what's your names?
01:17Izzy Smith, Olivia Miles.
01:19Thank you, I love that.
01:20So, it's your Arkel Sparkle 2025, so you've been given special awards.
01:26What sort of stuff have you had to do to achieve this, then?
01:29I did lots of performances.
01:32What sort of performances? Like singing, dancing, or...?
01:35I did dancing.
01:36Oh, well, OK. What about yourself?
01:38I did some charity work.
01:40What sort of charity work?
01:41Um, I sponsored Macmillan.
01:44Ah, right, yeah, good cause. And what about yourself?
01:46I've achieved the role of head girl.
01:48Not bad, not bad going.
01:49And I've sang in Arkel's Got Talent, and in Arkel, which, Arkel the Parkle, which was a fundraiser and a charity event for our school.
01:59Cool. So, are you proud of yourselves? Are you kind of giving yourselves a little pat on the back this evening?
02:03Yeah.
02:04And what do you want to do when you leave school? I mean, it's a big question, isn't it?
02:08You know, I didn't know when I was 15, 16. Any ideas?
02:11I want to go into college, and go into university, and study medicine.
02:16OK, medicine, cool. What about yourself? Any ideas?
02:18I would like to go to sixth form, and then university, and try and be an interior designer.
02:25Very cool.
02:25I would like to study at an academy in the United States for football.
02:30Oh.
02:30If that doesn't go well, then study law in university.
02:35Wow. So you're big into your sports?
02:37Yeah.
02:37Football as in soccer football?
02:39Yeah.
02:39The proper kind of football?
02:40Yeah.
02:41Yeah, it's more and more popular over there, isn't it now?
02:44Yeah. Well, we wish you all the best. You've done incredibly well getting these awards tonight,
02:48off the mayor and your principal. So, enjoy the rest of your evening, ladies. Thank you.
02:53The Arco Sparkle is awarded for those children who have achieved all three badges,
02:57and have been able to show those positive contributions in and outside of school,
03:02which essentially shows their character traits that they have. So, we're incredibly proud
03:08of all of them.
03:09Fantastic. And pleased to be back, Mayor, invited back to present the awards.
03:13I'm absolutely delighted. I thought the evening was wonderful for me to listen to the music
03:18at the start, and it brought back memories. But I also am trying to promote the civic pride
03:28in young people, and the school is doing this in spades. So, I don't need to come and try
03:33and encourage them. It's there. So, I'm absolutely thrilled that that's happening, and we've seen
03:38a demonstration of that tonight. So, I'm delighted to have been here, and a lovely evening. Thank you.
03:44No, we're delighted to have had you. Thank you.
03:58No, we're delighted to have been here, and we're delighted to have been here, and thank you.
