00:00Let's go to PTV Sports and join us live in the studio with Clint Nguyen, two-time UAAP champion and making a long jump in the world.
00:15Good morning!
00:18We are really proud of you.
00:21Hi Clint!
00:23Let's talk about your journey.
00:25How did you choose long jump?
00:30How did I choose long jump?
00:32I think that's the sports or event where I am passionate.
00:38I believe.
00:39I have a lot of sports that I can learn.
00:43I have a lot of basketball.
00:45But in terms of long-term career and wise decisions,
00:50I think it's a long jump and track and chill.
00:54So, I really thought about this event.
00:59But this is my question.
01:01When I saw long jump, triple jump and sprinting,
01:05how do you balance it?
01:07These are three different athletic events.
01:09Yes, track and field.
01:11But those events, mom, they are just connected.
01:16Because the long jumps, you need speed.
01:20So, I can do sprints.
01:22But in terms of international events and national events,
01:27I just focus on jumps.
01:29When UAAP, I am going to sprint because I need points as many as we can.
01:33For the championship.
01:35Okay.
01:36Kanina sabi mo, pinag-isipan mo na dito, ito ang napili mong sport.
01:40Ano yung naging basis mo?
01:42Why you choose long jump?
01:44And did you dream of becoming an athlete mong bata ka?
01:48Oh, yes.
01:49I started when I was grade 3.
01:51I think mga 10 years old pa ako.
01:53So, more than a decade na ako sa track and field.
01:55So, pinangarap ko din talaga mag-athlete.
01:58And nung sinubukan, nung pinasok ko yung track and field,
02:02wala akong na-feel na burden.
02:04And parang excited ako mag-training.
02:07So, I think para sa akin talaga to.
02:15I think yun yung pinaka-importante.
02:16It's not a work if you're having fun.
02:20Yes, yes.
02:21Ito Clint, last UAAP Season 87, tinibag mo yung iyong record, sariling record.
02:28Yes.
02:29Knowing na last December, dito sa Philippine National Games, you incur an injury.
02:33So, paano mo nagawa yun?
02:35Yeah, grabe yung challenge na yun.
02:39And it takes a lot of patience to recover.
02:42And one step of a time na makabalik.
02:46And yun, ginawa ko lang yung motivation na because I believe yung setback na yun is just a setup for my better comeback or greater comeback.
02:55So, nagawa ko naman siya nung nag-Indonesia kami.
02:58And nung nag-UAAP din.
03:00So, yeah, it takes a lot of patience.
03:03Grabe yung recovery mo.
03:05And isa sa mga nakatulong ko din dun is, I think you just need to have a mentor na magkana sa'yo.
03:13To follow up on that, last season, nag-silver ka lang sa triple drop.
03:17How does it feel na, finally, nakaka-recover mo lang from injury and now you bagged the gold medal sa triple drop?
03:25Yeah, and I am very confident last season naman sa UAV na makukuha ko yung dalawang gold.
03:31And, ayun, yes, I am grateful for the results in the UAV because we prepared it for a long time din.
03:38And pinaghandaan din namin.
03:40You know, one of the things talaga na nagugustuhan ko sa mga batang atleta ngayon is yung kanilang resiliency.
03:46Yes.
03:47You know, like other athletes, whenever they, you know, nagkaka-injury, hindi yung nagiging, kumbaga hindran sa makarecover at makabalik dun sa original form mo. Yes.
03:59So, Clint, how about, ano naman yung mga most memorable tournament na sinalihan mo?
04:04Um, I think, um, experience-wise, of course, I would say international.
04:09But for memorable, um, I would say the UAP.
04:13The UAP seasons, the three consecutive UAP seasons.
04:16Kasi yun, ah, championship, first runner-up, multiple medals, and there's a lot of experience and lessons during the competitions.
04:25And yung preparation, ah, ang dami nangyayari.
04:29And the coach-athlet relationship that they meet, madami.
04:40Kasi, yun, ah, maganda.
04:43Now that you're part of KG management, one of the most prestigious management, ano yung feeling mo na parte ka ng mga top-tier athletes?
04:52Um, of course, ah, it's a privilege. And being with the top athletes, especially, ah, kasi, ah, I believe in anumame na, ah,
05:03kung gusto mo maging top athletes, you need to be with the top athletes also.
05:08So, ayun, ah, sa, in the KG management, there's a lot of talented athletes.
05:13So, um, it, nakaka-inspired, nakaka-motivate din na makakasabay ka sa ano nila.
05:20Kasi, ah, ah, andun yung growth, eh, whether we like it or not, kailangan mong sumabay sa kanila.
05:25And they can also be your mentors, yung mga seniors, no, yung mga seniors sa management namin.
05:31So, yeah, it's a privilege for me na kasama yung KG management sa journey namin ngayon.
05:36Parter, dito mo makikita na, if you wanna be the best, be with the best.
05:40Yes, yes.
05:41It's very important.
05:48Even sa other sports, no, kapag ka-amateur ka or baguito ka, pagkasama mo yung mga magagaling, you have no choice but to keep up.
05:55Kailangan.
05:56It's the experience talaga na malaking bagay, I think, lalo na pag talagang maganda yung pinapakita ng isang atleta.
06:03Pero, Clint, apart from working or playing together with top-tier athletes, you're also studying, of course, isa sa mga talagang skwelahan, syempre.
06:12Medyo, ano tayo dyan, ako'y isang iska rin.
06:15And how difficult is it to, you know, be a student-athlete sa UP?
06:19Alam ko naman na, pero para sa'yo.
06:21For me, mam, yun, yung pressure, it's totally different, especially in UP.
06:28But, of course, as always, sinabi nga ni Jovena, pressure is a privilege.
06:34So, yun, madaming challenges and it's not easy, but I think you just need a full commitment and dedication.
06:43And, yun, kailangan mo lang i-cut yung mga unnecessary vices and bad habits are minimized to manage all the time and yung mga priorities mo magagawa mo talaga.
06:56Especially, but, depende naman sa ibang universities.
07:00Pero sa UP, it's very challenging, especially sa system.
07:03But, of course, there's no reason not to be grateful.
07:07Totoo yan. Totoo yan.
07:08Kitang-kita ko kay Clint yung pagiging discipline niya, no?
07:11Yes, yes.
07:12At saka yung how he manages school and being an athlete.
07:32Exactly.
07:44paano ka naman magprepare for the next season to make sure na you will be able to defend the gold medal?
07:51Yeah, ito din yung pinaka-goal namin especially.
07:55This is a very special season for me this coming season 8-8.
08:00And, we're preparing on it na starting now.
08:04Kasi this will be my last dance in UAAP or farewell.
08:09So, I want to perform well and do my best and establish more records and inspire more athletes.
08:20Ayan.
08:21Siyempre, meron ka bang message sa mga teammates mo? Coaches?
08:24Mentors?
08:25Shoutouts?
08:26May mga papasalamatan ka ba?
08:27Special mentions?
08:28Yes.
08:29Siguro, yes, to my family na nanonood din ngayon.
08:32And sa mga teammates ko and followers, thank you so much for all the support.
08:38And to all my coaches and mentors na nagme-mentor sa career ko on Journey.
08:45And I hope to see you soon and more competitions and more records to kami.
08:52Alright, maraming maraming salamat.
08:54Yes, thank you so much.
08:55Clint Gignaneri, ang athlete, of course, from UP.
