00:00Eva Moses called the girl who survived Auschwitz and forgave the Nazis' true story.
00:05Today I'm telling you a story.
00:07A story of survival and forgiveness.
00:11She was just 10 years old when the Nazis took her away from her family, did cruel medical
00:17experiments on her, and left her to die.
00:21But she survived.
00:23She fought the system that tried to break her.
00:26And in the end, she did something the world never expected.
00:30She forgave them.
00:32Yes.
00:33She forgave the Nazis.
00:36This is the real story of Eva Moses' core.
00:39The little girl who showed the world that forgiveness is stronger than hate.
00:43You're watching Vault of Centuries.

00:54A Child in the Middle of War.
00:56Eva Moses' core was born in 1934, in a small village in Romania.
01:01She was Jewish.
01:03She had a twin sister named Miriam.
01:06Life was peaceful.
01:09She played in the fields, went to school, and lived happily with her parents and two older
01:13sisters.
01:15But all of that ended in 1944, when World War II reached her village.
01:20When the Nazis arrived.
01:22They arrested all the Jews, including Eva's entire family.
01:26They were packed into a crowded cattle train, and sent to Auschwitz, the most feared Nazi
01:31death camp.
01:32When they reached the gates, everything changed.
01:36Eva and Miriam were pulled away, because they were twins.
01:39Their parents and older sisters were sent straight to the gas chambers.
01:44They were murdered the same day.
01:46Eva never saw them again.
01:48She and Miriam were taken to a special area of the camp, run by a Nazi doctor named Josef
01:53Mendel, also known as the Angel of Death.
01:57Josef Mendel had a twisted obsession with twins.
02:00He believed he could unlock the secrets of the human body through them, but it wasn't science.
02:06It was torture.
02:08Eva and Miriam were forced into freezing, filthy barracks with no beds.
02:13Every morning, Nazi doctors arrived, with clipboards and needles.
02:18Eva was injected with unknown chemicals, again and again.
02:22One day, her body swelled.
02:24Her fever rose.
02:26She collapsed.
02:28A doctor looked at her and said, She has two weeks to live.
02:33They left her to die on a hard wooden floor.
02:36But Eva refused to die.
02:39She lay there, suffering.
02:41But she survived.
02:43She later said, If I survive, I will tell the world what they did to us.
02:50Miriam also survived, but not without damage.
02:53The experiments had severely hurt her kidneys.
02:57As an adult, her health began to fail.
03:00One of her kidneys stopped working.
03:03To save her life, Eva donated one of her own kidneys to her sister in 1987.
03:09But in 1993, Miriam passed away from a rare form of cancer, possibly caused by the chemicals
03:14injected into her as a child.
03:17After Miriam's death, Eva made a new promise.
03:20I will never stop telling our story.
03:23Not just for me, but to keep Miriam alive too.
03:27Eva and Miriam stayed in Auschwitz for nine long months.
03:31They suffered every single day, cold, hunger, pain, fear.
03:36But in January 1945, the Soviet army approached the camp.
03:41The Nazis began to flee.
03:43They forced thousands of prisoners to march through the snow.
03:47But they left the twins behind, thinking they were too weak to survive.
03:52On January 27, 1945, Soviet soldiers entered Auschwitz.
03:57The gates were opened.
03:59The guards were gone.
04:01Eva and Miriam were free.
04:04But Eva said later, There was no joy in that moment.
04:08We were alive, but we were alone.
04:11After liberation, the girls went to a refugee camp.
04:15Later, they returned to Romania.
04:18Eva eventually moved to Israel, and then to the United States.
04:23She got married, raised children, and built a new life.
04:27But the pain of Auschwitz never left her.
04:30She remembered everything, every needle, every scream, every lost face.
04:35And she had made a promise, to tell the world.
04:38In the 1990s, decades after the war, Eva returned to Auschwitz, not as a victim, but as a witness.
04:46She began to speak at schools, museums, and even inside the camps.
04:51She wanted people to learn what hate can do.
04:54Then something unexpected happened.
04:57Eva met a former Nazi doctor, not Mendel, but another man who had worked at Auschwitz.
05:03And Eva gave him a letter.
05:05A letter of forgiveness.
05:07The world was shocked.
05:09Some Holocaust survivors were angry.
05:12How could she forgive?
05:14But Eva stood firm.
05:16She said, Forgiveness is not for the Nazis.
05:20It's for me.
05:22I refuse to carry the pain they gave me for the rest of my life.
05:26Eva didn't stop.
05:28She founded the Candles Holocaust Museum in Indiana, USA.
05:33A place to teach about the Holocaust, survival, and the power of forgiveness.
05:38She gave thousands of speeches.
05:40She spoke in schools, prisons, universities, and even in Germany.
05:44Her message was always the same.
05:48Hate is easy.
05:50But love, healing, and forgiveness?
05:53That takes strength.
05:55In July 2019, Eva returned to Auschwitz once more.
06:00This time, with students from around the world, teaching them face to face.
06:05But during that visit, Eva passed away peacefully in her sleep.
06:10She died in the place where she once came so close to death.
06:14But this time, she left behind a world that remembered her.
06:17She was just a little girl when the world tried to destroy her.
06:21But she lived.
06:23She spoke.
06:25She forgave.
06:26And in doing so, Eva Moses' core defeated hate, not with revenge, but with courage.
06:33Her story reminds us all.
06:36We can't change the past, but we can change what it means.
