00:00Liverpool football star Diogo Jota has been killed in a car crash in Spain.
00:05The Portuguese forward and his brother were both found dead after their car went off a road near the northwestern city of Zamora.
00:13The crash came two weeks after the soccer star married the mother of his three children.
00:18For the latest on what happened, let's bring in France 24's Sarah Morris in Madrid.
00:23Sarah, this is such tragic news in the football world.
00:25What more do we know about what happened exactly?
00:30Well, the Spanish media are reporting that this accident happened on the A52.
00:36The Spanish police are saying that they will have to wait to investigate and to carry out the autopsy.
00:43But the suggestion is that both Diogo Jota and his brother were in a Lamborghini that they were travelling in and that it veered off the road.
00:55And there's reports that the car later was caught on fire.
00:59Now, the Portuguese football federation has said that it is the two men who died in that accident.
01:06They have really said that this is devastating for the international football world and for Liverpool and for the Portuguese team.
01:18Really, lots of media are struggling to digest the enormity of this because, as you pointed out, as late as on Monday, Diogo Jota was sharing pictures of his wedding,
01:34which was obviously a very happy event.
01:36Pictures with his three very young children at that beautiful church wedding, which was the happiest day of his life.
01:46And, yes, early to say really what caused this accident, but a tragic death indeed.
01:54It certainly is.
01:56And in the meantime, his club, the Liverpool Club, has released a statement saying that it is devastated by Jota's death.
02:02I mean, he was a real star in the soccer world.
02:05Tell us a bit more about his life.
02:09He was.
02:10He was really the man who helped the Merseyside team, Liverpool, to a really fantastic season.
02:18They won the Premier League last season.
02:20They also won the FA Cup and the League Cup.
02:23And Jota scored 65 goals in his 182 appearances.
02:30He was well-loved as well in the locker room.
02:33He was a warm man, a warm player.
02:37Lots of his fellow teammates liked him.
02:41He also made...
02:43He joined Anfield after a stint at the Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020.
02:49And he also made a brief appearance here, was at the Atletico Madrid Club.
02:57So he's well-loved in Spain, in his home country, Portugal, and obviously in England, in the English League.
03:06We've actually seen Portugal's Prime Minister react to this news on social media.
03:11Luis Montenegro says,
03:12It's the news of the death of Diogo Jota, an athlete who greatly honoured Portugal's name.
03:18And his brother is unexpected and tragic.
03:22I extend my deepest condolences to their family.
03:26It is a sad day for football and for national and international sports.
03:32And Pedro Pluenza, the president of the Portuguese FA, is also writing on social media.
03:38He talks about the Portuguese Football Federation and the entire Portuguese football community being completely devastated.
03:48And says much more than a fantastic player, he was also an extraordinary person.
