00:00:00Okay, fine. Just do it because it'll look good on your college obligations.
00:00:03Hmm. Super helpful, considering I submitted them months ago.
00:00:08Hi. I will take a black coffee, please.
00:00:12Oh, my God. Lauren Burke? Is that you, honey?
00:00:16Uh, yeah.
00:00:17Helene. Helene Matthews. My goodness, the last time I saw you, you were about this big.
00:00:22Oh, my sweet Nora. She was competing during Little Miss Dewdrop,
00:00:26and the two of you were running around wild in your backyard.
00:00:28Right. Yeah, Mrs. Matthews. It's nice to see you.
00:00:35Oh, shoot. I have to pick Nora up from her vocal lesson,
00:00:38but you tell your mom I'm going to call her, okay?
00:00:40Okay, okay. Bye.
00:00:41Bye.
00:00:43What was that?
00:00:44I know, right? All my mom's pageant friends are like that.
00:00:48Oh, yeah. I always forgot your mom was, like, a beauty queen.
00:00:51She said she had the best time, and it paid for college, so whatever.
00:00:54You ready for another one?
00:00:57No, but hit me anyway.
00:00:58Oh, my God.
00:01:03This has to be about my application, right?
00:01:06I'll be one way to find out.
00:01:10Why isn't it opening?
00:01:11Go to the website.
00:01:14Come on. Come on. Come on.
00:01:17Oh, my God. What have I done to deserve this?
00:01:19Uh, call your mom.
00:01:20Rob, I'm going to have to call you back.
00:01:27Okay. Bye.
00:01:32Hey, everything okay? What's going on?
00:01:34I'm fine, but I need a favor. It's life or death.
00:01:37I seriously doubt that.
00:01:38For real, Mom, Vanderton, updated my application, but I can't open the app.
00:01:42Or the website.
00:01:42And if I don't find out what it says, I'm literally going to die.
00:01:45Okay, well, hold on.
00:01:46You're the best.
00:01:50Hmm.
00:01:51I'll be right back.
00:01:54Mom?
00:01:55Are you there? Mom?
00:01:56Yeah. No, I'm here.
00:01:57The app and the website are both down.
00:02:00So I came out to see if you have anything in the mailbox.
00:02:03Mom, this isn't the Dark Ages. They're not sending it in the mail.
00:02:11How much you want to bet?
00:02:15A toast to my baby girl.
00:02:24Well, when you were four years old, you came downstairs and informed your mom and me that you were going to be a doctor.
00:02:33And I say informed because there was absolutely no discussion.
00:02:37True story.
00:02:38But that's who you are and what you do.
00:02:41You set a goal and you achieve it.
00:02:44Because why?
00:02:45Because births never say die.
00:02:49We're just so proud of you.
00:02:54I thought she was going to qualify for more financial aid.
00:03:00And do you think it would help if we sent them copies of our mortgage and car payments?
00:03:03Or Lauren's medical bills?
00:03:06What are we going to do?
00:03:08Well, we're going to do what other people do.
00:03:13We're going to apply for scholarships.
00:03:15Take out a loan.
00:03:16No loans.
00:03:17The last thing I want is for her to have to start out in the hole like I did.
00:03:22I hate that this is even an issue.
00:03:25Whoa.
00:03:2617K is a lot of cash.
00:03:28What are you going to do?
00:03:29I made an appointment with the new guidance counselor tomorrow.
00:03:32Oh, yeah, Ms. Dorman.
00:03:33She's so dope.
00:03:34Yeah, she helped me with a bunch of my cosmetology school applications.
00:03:37If anyone's going to know what to do, it'll be her.
00:03:40Oh, also, do you want to get a smoothie tomorrow from Savage Nature?
00:03:43You want a smoothie.
00:03:45You know that has fruit in it, right?
00:03:47Yeah, I know.
00:03:48I like healthy things.
00:03:50Mm-hmm.
00:03:52Okay, so there's this really cute guy who works there who I've, like, almost made eye contact with.
00:03:56I wish I could, but I have to have family breakfast.
00:03:59My mom is obsessed with us spending quality time together.
00:04:02Dude, did something, like, go out on their group chat?
00:04:04Because Beth can speak of nothing else.
00:04:06It's like she thinks the minute I graduate, she's never going to see me again.
00:04:10You're literally living at home next year.
00:04:12Yeah, I know.
00:04:13Can you imagine how needy she'd be if I was actually leaving?
00:04:18Can I come in?
00:04:20Yeah.
00:04:20Oh, hi, Mrs. Burke.
00:04:22Hey, Ray.
00:04:24I'll talk to you tomorrow.
00:04:27What's up?
00:04:28Um, nothing.
00:04:30I just, I know you seemed a little bit off after dinner,
00:04:34and considering you just got the best news of your life seemed a little strange, so.
00:04:40What's up?
00:04:42I overheard you and Dad talking about how much Vanderton's going to cost.
00:04:47Mom, I don't have to go there.
00:04:49I can go somewhere else.
00:04:50I can go somewhere cheaper.
00:04:52Lauren, no.
00:04:54Vanderton is your dream.
00:04:55It's just so expensive.
00:04:56It is.
00:05:00It's also the best diggerative and prognostic factor research facility.
00:05:05Honey, if we can make this happen for you, we will.
00:05:11Okay?
00:05:12Okay.
00:05:13Get some sleep.
00:05:14Okay.
00:05:15Hey, I almost forgot.
00:05:21I ran as that friend of yours today, Mrs. Matthews.
00:05:24Helene?
00:05:25What's she doing in town?
00:05:27I don't know.
00:05:28Yeah, she lives here now.
00:05:31Laura?
00:05:33Yeah?
00:05:34I mean it.
00:05:36We're gonna figure this out, okay?
00:05:39Okay.
00:05:41I love you.
00:05:42Love you, too.
00:05:43Love you.
00:05:45So, what can I do for you?
00:05:47We got the financial aid package.
00:05:49And it's not enough.
00:05:54Like, not even close.
00:05:55Yeah.
00:05:56It's kind of the plight of the middle class.
00:05:59Your parents make too much to qualify for aid, but not enough to afford such high tuition.
00:06:05The good news is, you have been busy these last four years.
00:06:09I'm going to email you a website where you can put all your info, and it'll give you a list of things you qualify for.
00:06:16Thanks.
00:06:17I know this can be overwhelming.
00:06:20If you need any help, that's myself.
00:06:25Call me anytime.
00:06:28So, how's the money hunt going?
00:06:34If I get every single scholarship I apply for, it's almost enough to cover my first year's tuition.
00:06:40Yikes.
00:06:41Man, it's too bad you can't pay for college the way your mom did.
00:06:44Guys, I think I might have figured everything out.
00:07:06I would like to enter the Miss Teen Starfire pageant.
00:07:12Maybe.
00:07:14No.
00:07:15Why not?
00:07:16The winner gets like $50,000.
00:07:18Didn't we try this once already?
00:07:20Yes, and it was a disaster.
00:07:26I'm going to go.
00:07:32Need I remind you of the Little Miss Blue Lily fiasco of 2012?
00:07:35I was four, and I think I'm past the peeing my pants on stage phase of life.
00:07:41Why won't you let me do this?
00:07:43You're always saying how much fun pageants were, and that you wouldn't be who you are today without them.
00:07:48I mean, that's true, but they're a huge commitment.
00:07:52I know.
00:07:53I looked at the website.
00:07:54It's a lot of work.
00:07:56But when has that ever bothered me?
00:07:58Honey, you have no idea what goes into all of this.
00:08:02I feel like we should stay the course, and we should focus on the scholarships and the grants.
00:08:09Obviously, I'm still doing that.
00:08:11But I'm up against like a thousand people for a couple hundred dollars here and there.
00:08:15With a pageant, it's like ten people for fifty grand.
00:08:20I mean, it kind of seems like a no-brainer to me.
00:08:22You don't just sign up for a beauty pageant and then expect you're going to win.
00:08:26That's not how these things work.
00:08:28These girls have trained for literally years.
00:08:31They have walking coaches and interview coaches and talent coaches.
00:08:35So be my coach.
00:08:36You're always saying you want to spend more time with me.
00:08:38Now's your chance.
00:08:41Come on, Mom.
00:08:43Please.
00:08:45Okay.
00:08:49Okay, but I just have to place in the top three.
00:08:53It's still pretty much impossible.
00:08:55Not one of the best coaches in the whole wide world.
00:09:03You have to drink in three sodas already today.
00:09:06Deal with that.
00:09:08And you agreed to participate in this thing willingly?
00:09:09Okay, like, no shade, but you're basically the last person I ever pictured entering a beauty pageant.
00:09:17I don't know whether to feel offended or seen.
00:09:20Oh, come on.
00:09:21You know you're not really, like, pageant girl.
00:09:23And what exactly is a pageant girl?
00:09:26Uh, you know, someone with poise.
00:09:30Talent?
00:09:31Pride in their appearance.
00:09:32Wow, guys.
00:09:34Shots fired.
00:09:35Okay, don't get salty.
00:09:37All right?
00:09:37You know what we mean.
00:09:38I'm your substance and they're...
00:09:41Not.
00:09:42But they could be.
00:09:44And maybe I'm the breath of fresh air the pageant world needs.
00:09:47Laura, have you looked at this schedule?
00:09:49I know.
00:09:49It looks way worse than it is.
00:09:51Yeah, I hope so.
00:09:52I'm going to be a total drag to spend the last few months of high school with strangers instead of your friends.
00:09:57Okay, traumatic much?
00:09:59Will I miss a hang or two here and there?
00:10:02Yes.
00:10:02But for the most part, all I have to do is throw in a dress, walk across the stage, and smile.
00:10:07How much prep can I possibly take?
00:10:09Girl, I've seen you walk in heels.
00:10:11If I were you, I'd start practicing now.
00:10:14Rude!
00:10:16So, I was thinking I should wear my hair up because that's probably easiest, right?
00:10:21It depends.
00:10:22Are you changing clothes over your head or are you stepping in and out of them?
00:10:25Absolutely no idea.
00:10:26Hi, Ray.
00:10:26Hi, Mrs. Burke.
00:10:28Can you just come into the living room for just a minute?
00:10:30Mom, we need to get started on our homework.
00:10:32It'll only be a minute.
00:10:34Okay.
00:10:34Okay.
00:10:50I thought we could try some things on and see what works best on you.
00:10:56Can you hear the footsteps calling?
00:11:02Watching through all that has fallen.
00:11:06It's time for you to reach inside and get on the ride.
00:11:11Get up and get on.
00:11:13Get on the train.
00:11:15Get on the bus.
00:11:16Don't stop.
00:11:17Let's make a chain.
00:11:19All of us.
00:11:19Live your life by joining in.
00:11:24Let's drink the numbers.
00:11:26Let's begin.
00:11:37Oh, honey.
00:11:38It has not changed at all.
00:11:44Oh, my gosh.
00:11:44Oh, my gosh.
00:11:45Look at these photos.
00:11:46Wow.
00:11:47Oh, my gosh.
00:11:48Oh, my God.
00:11:50It's you.
00:11:51Ah!
00:11:54It's you.
00:11:55How are you?
00:11:57Oh, my God.
00:11:58Are you going to let me breathe, honey?
00:12:00Sorry.
00:12:01I'm just so excited.
00:12:02When I saw Lauren's name on the Starfire roster next to Nora's, I couldn't believe it.
00:12:08Talk about a full circle moment.
00:12:10It really is, isn't it?
00:12:12Yes.
00:12:12Here, come on.
00:12:13Let's get you checked in.
00:12:14Oh, okay.
00:12:15Are you okay?
00:12:15Okay.
00:12:16How long do you think this is going to take?
00:12:27Um, it's probably going to be about an hour.
00:12:29Why?
00:12:30Ray signed me up for a prom committee, and I have to put an agenda together for the meeting tomorrow.
00:12:34Do you even really want to go to prom?
00:12:36TBD.
00:12:38Okay.
00:12:38Who is that?
00:12:47That is Iris Brooks.
00:12:49Ms. Brooks to you.
00:12:53And she is Ms. Starfire.
00:12:56Trust me, you do not want to get on her bad side.
00:13:00Noted.
00:13:00Welcome, friends, to the 55th annual Ms. Teen Starfire pageant.
00:13:11I'm happy to see so many of the usual suspects, as well as a few faces I haven't seen in quite some time.
00:13:19As you know, Ms. Starfire is not just a beauty pageant.
00:13:24It is a competition designed to inspire and empower young women to their greatest potential.
00:13:32Because we believe that with hard work, dedication, and a little encouragement, there is nothing that cannot be achieved.
00:13:44Sorry, your mom pawned me off on you.
00:13:54I know we haven't seen each other in like a decade.
00:13:56NBD, this is your first pageant, right?
00:13:59Technically, no.
00:14:01Right.
00:14:02Well, let's hope that you last more than 10 minutes this time.
00:14:05How many have you been in?
00:14:07I don't know.
00:14:08Like, three or four a year for 12 years?
00:14:11So, however many that is.
00:14:14It's the same for most of these girls.
00:14:16We've all been on the same circuit together since we were like five.
00:14:19Wow.
00:14:19So, you're basically an expert.
00:14:22Any advice?
00:14:23Besides get out while you can?
00:14:26I guess the first thing to remember would be all of these girls have serious main character energy.
00:14:33So, there will be drama.
00:14:35And obviously everyone wants to win, but not necessarily for the same reason.
00:14:39I guess I just assumed everybody needs money for college like I do.
00:14:42Let me tell you, being a doctor does not come cheap.
00:14:45Money's definitely a big one.
00:14:47But then there's also girls like my friend Maddie, where literally everyone in her family has worn the crown.
00:14:52She's under that don't come home without it kind of pressure.
00:14:54Seriously?
00:14:55Oh yeah.
00:14:56People are beyond about this stuff.
00:14:58There's this one girl, Brianna, who thinks she's gonna like get discovered or something.
00:15:01No way.
00:15:02Oh yeah.
00:15:04She's convinced.
00:15:05She's two wins away from like getting her own reality show.
00:15:08Don't be scared.
00:15:09I'm just telling you this so you know how mega serious people take it.
00:15:12So, what should I do?
00:15:13Okay, there's three kinds of girls to watch out for.
00:15:17The liars, the criers, and the kleptos.
00:15:20So basically, keep an eye on your stuff and don't believe a single thing anybody tells you.
00:15:26Especially when they find out this is your first rodeo.
00:15:28You should be fine.
00:15:30Have I told you how great you look?
00:15:32What, me?
00:15:33I mean, are you kidding?
00:15:35I swear you haven't aged a day.
00:15:37My injector is my emergency contact, so that tells you everything you need to know.
00:15:42I wish I was kidding.
00:15:44If only I had the courage to age as gracefully as you.
00:15:51Shall we?
00:15:54Hey, Nora.
00:15:56Who's your friend?
00:15:57Uh, Brianna, Maddie, this is Lauren.
00:15:59It's nice to meet you.
00:16:01You too.
00:16:01So, what are we talking about?
00:16:04Just spilling a little pageant tea.
00:16:05Did you see Roger's not judging this year?
00:16:08Oh, I heard he's on the flower circuit.
00:16:10Somebody's in trouble.
00:16:12What's the flower circuit?
00:16:14Hello, ladies.
00:16:15Are we excited for these next few weeks?
00:16:18Yes, Miss Brooks.
00:16:19Miss Monroe, I understand congratulations are in order.
00:16:24Thank you, ma'am.
00:16:25It wasn't a clean win, though, was it?
00:16:28Second place in talent, third in evening wear.
00:16:33Still room for improvement.
00:16:35Yes, ma'am.
00:16:37And you must be the legendary Julianne Simmons' daughter?
00:16:42Uh, I mean, yes, ma'am.
00:16:47It's Lauren's first pageant.
00:16:50I can tell.
00:16:50I'm sure your mother will have you squared away in no time.
00:16:56Maybe start with those eyebrows.
00:16:59So sorry to interrupt.
00:17:02The facility manager needs a word.
00:17:05Excuse me, please.
00:17:08Hi, Drew.
00:17:09Hi, Drew.
00:17:10Ladies?
00:17:11Don't believe a word these three say.
00:17:21The prodigal grandson returns.
00:17:23So, temperature check.
00:17:28How are we feeling about all this?
00:17:31I think it's going to take a lot more time than I thought.
00:17:36Go ahead.
00:17:37I know you're dying to say.
00:17:38I don't know what you're talking about.
00:17:43But seriously, now that you have an idea about what this is going to take, are you sure this is something you want to do?
00:17:50Is that your passive-aggressive way of telling me to quit?
00:17:52Honey, look.
00:17:55I will support you.
00:17:56I want to do it.
00:17:58I don't know.
00:18:00If I work really, really hard, maybe I could get third.
00:18:06And that's like ten grand.
00:18:10And if I don't, I haven't really lost anything, right?
00:18:18Okay.
00:18:20Let's get to work.
00:18:21Come on.
00:18:29Yeah, they're a little unkept.
00:18:32And you let me walk around like this?
00:18:34Dude, see something, say something.
00:18:36Um, I need a caffeine infusion.
00:18:38Stat.
00:18:42Can you cover my shift today?
00:18:43I need to do some pageant stuff with my mom.
00:18:45Uh, yeah.
00:18:46What are you smiling at?
00:18:53Uh, do you remember that guy from the smoothie place?
00:18:56You guys are texting?
00:18:58Wait, has he asked you out?
00:18:59Uh, no.
00:19:00Not yet.
00:19:01But I was hoping we could go grab a smoothie after a prom committee.
00:19:05You know, like, create the opportunity.
00:19:07Uh, about that.
00:19:10Now, uh, don't freak out.
00:19:11I don't think I'm going to be able to do the prom committee.
00:19:15I'm sorry.
00:19:16It's, it's the pageant between it and school and work.
00:19:20Something's got to give.
00:19:21Do you promise this isn't just some low-key way for you to get out of going to prom?
00:19:24Um, swear to God.
00:19:26Okay.
00:19:27Well, you can just meet him after the basketball game.
00:19:30His school's playing our school, so we're just going to hang out after.
00:19:32Hello, ladies.
00:19:34Ray, I just know that's not a phone I see you using.
00:19:36Yeah, no, no phone here.
00:19:39I just spoke to a friend who runs the research lab at the hospital.
00:19:43She's looking for a special project assistant.
00:19:45It's 30 bucks an hour Saturdays and Sundays, and the job is yours if you want it.
00:19:50Seriously?
00:19:50That sounds so rad, and, like, perfect for me.
00:19:55Great.
00:19:56So, I can tell her you can start this weekend?
00:19:59Oh, uh, I'm just kind of in the middle of something right now.
00:20:04Is there any way I could start in, like, a month?
00:20:07She needs someone now, unfortunately.
00:20:10Really?
00:20:16I kind of have to see this other thing through.
00:20:20Thanks anyway.
00:20:31Okay, so today we need to pick your platform.
00:20:34And this is one of my favorite parts of the pageant, because this really tells the judges what matters most to you as a person.
00:20:40I want to do Red Heart MD.
00:20:43Okay.
00:20:44They helped me so much with my cardiomyopathy diagnosis.
00:20:48Yeah.
00:20:49So what now?
00:20:50We fill out the form?
00:20:52Yeah.
00:20:54I just have to say, it means so much to me that we're doing this together.
00:20:59Yeah.
00:21:00Me too.
00:21:04Mom?
00:21:06Yeah.
00:21:07Are you crying?
00:21:07No.
00:21:12Stop.
00:21:14Yes, you are.
00:21:17I just love you.
00:21:18I've always had a dark side to me.
00:21:23A black hole in my heart.
00:21:27Look around and see them glowing.
00:21:31And I wonder where to start.
00:21:33Oh my God, they're huge.
00:21:40My mom, she borrows my bag all the time.
00:21:43So annoying, right?
00:21:44I like that color.
00:22:00Can I try it?
00:22:02Uh, sure.
00:22:04Have you picked your platform yet?
00:22:06I always do the environment.
00:22:08It's easy.
00:22:09Cool.
00:22:10I'm doing this organization that buddies up sick kids with other kids who have survived
00:22:14the same illness.
00:22:16I used it when I was little and seeing that I want to be a doctor and all.
00:22:20Kind of makes sense.
00:22:21Super.
00:22:22Bea, that color looks amazing.
00:22:24I know, right?
00:22:25Lauren, is it okay if I try that too?
00:22:26Uh, yeah, sure.
00:22:28You know if there's a vending machine in the building that works?
00:22:32They always unplug them during the pageant to stop us from eating junk food.
00:22:36You could drink a bunch of water.
00:22:37It tricks your body into thinking that you're really full, but not too much, because then
00:22:40you'll blow.
00:22:41It's a really fine line.
00:22:42Knock, knock.
00:22:44Oh, shucks.
00:22:46You're decent.
00:22:47You, more makeup.
00:22:49Burke, come on.
00:22:50You're up.
00:22:51Good luck.
00:22:55Today.
00:22:56Let's go.
00:22:58First, we'll film your intro video.
00:23:04That'll be shown at the beginning of the pageant.
00:23:05Then you'll do pre-interviews with the judges.
00:23:07It's the first time they're meeting you, so bring your A-game.
00:23:09No pressure there.
00:23:10You'll be great.
00:23:11Oh, hey.
00:23:13Just ignore what the other girls are saying about you.
00:23:16Well, what are they saying?
00:23:19Honestly, it's not worth repeating.
00:23:24All right, sit here.
00:23:27Yeah.
00:23:27All right.
00:23:27Look at me.
00:23:28Chin up.
00:23:29All right, no, not that much.
00:23:30Shoulders like this.
00:23:31Hips back.
00:23:32Arms here.
00:23:33Okay.
00:23:34This is good.
00:23:35Don't move.
00:23:37Yeah.
00:23:38Okay, listen.
00:23:39I need you to look at the camera like you're trying to seduce it.
00:23:43Wait.
00:23:44You want me to what?
00:23:44Oh, please.
00:23:46Don't tell me you really are that naive nerd Brianna says you are.
00:23:51Wait, really?
00:23:52She said that?
00:23:53Don't be so surprised.
00:23:55I mean, after all, she kind of is a bitch, right?
00:23:57I guess.
00:23:59I guess.
00:24:01No, this isn't working for me.
00:24:02I need lipstick.
00:24:03Can someone?
00:24:03I need red lipstick.
00:24:09Put this on.
00:24:10If it's okay, I'd rather not.
00:24:13I don't really like red lipstick.
00:24:14Honey, no, no, no, no.
00:24:15It doesn't matter about what you like.
00:24:17It's about what the judges like.
00:24:18And the judges like red.
00:24:20Okay, do you have a mirror?
00:24:27It's enough.
00:24:29Pucker up.
00:24:36That's it.
00:24:43Perfect.
00:24:50How sad is it that she thinks she has an actual shot at winning?
00:25:15The saddest.
00:25:16I mean, did you hear her go on and on about that boring charity?
00:25:20Like, did judges give a crap about our platforms?
00:25:22I know, right?
00:25:23If you ask me, Nepo Baby's in for a rude awakening.
00:25:27The rudest.
00:25:47It was totally him.
00:25:48No way.
00:25:48I thought he was on time out somewhere.
00:25:51All I know is that my mom saw Roger and Iris having lunch today in town.
00:25:55That's crazy.
00:25:59How'd it go?
00:26:01Fine.
00:26:03Are you okay?
00:26:05Yeah.
00:26:05I just have to get to work.
00:26:09Drew said you called me a bitch.
00:26:12What?
00:26:12No, no, no, no.
00:26:13Save it.
00:26:17Uh, what do you think you're doing?
00:26:18This is my lipstick.
00:26:19I don't know what you're talking about.
00:26:21This is mine.
00:26:21I've worn this color for, like, years.
00:26:23Right, Maddie?
00:26:24Mm-hmm.
00:26:25For, like, ever?
00:26:25What?
00:26:36What?
00:26:36What?
00:26:39Oh, my God.
00:26:42Lauren.
00:26:45Lauren, stop.
00:26:47Lauren, seriously.
00:26:48What?
00:26:48Remember what I said about liars, cries, and kleptos?
00:26:54Brianna's kind of all three.
00:26:56I swear, I didn't call her a bitch.
00:26:59So what if you did?
00:26:59She is one.
00:27:01Seriously?
00:27:01How do you not just punch her in the face all the time?
00:27:04Whenever I get the urge to choose violence, I just reach up with...
00:27:07I don't know why.
00:27:13It makes me feel better.
00:27:15If I followed that logic, I would be bald by the end of the week.
00:27:20So, I'll see you tomorrow?
00:27:22Yeah.
00:27:23I guess so.
00:27:27Return now to a story in Woodbury, where Samuel Gompers...
00:27:31Honey, we're in here.
00:27:35Hey, how was rehearsal?
00:27:37Fine.
00:27:38I'm gonna go do my homework.
00:27:40In a minute, tell us about it.
00:27:47This guy, Drew, kept ordering me around.
00:27:51He just told me to look at the camera like I was trying to seduce it.
00:27:55Wait.
00:27:56Okay.
00:27:56He said what?
00:27:57No, it's just, it's like a figure of speech that a photographer will use sometimes.
00:28:01Whatever.
00:28:02Can I go do my homework?
00:28:03Yeah, I ordered pizza, so I'll let you know when it gets here, okay?
00:28:09I'm not hungry.
00:28:15Lauren, can I come in?
00:28:17Mom, I have a ton of homework.
00:28:18It'll just take a sec.
00:28:21Fine.
00:28:21Fine.
00:28:21Can you please stop typing and look at me?
00:28:36They're working you girls pretty hard, huh?
00:28:40It's freaking brutal, Mom.
00:28:45Yeah.
00:28:45Look, you don't have to do this if you don't want to.
00:29:11What happened to Berks?
00:29:13Never say die.
00:29:17All I'm saying is that there's no shame in quitting.
00:29:22Are you worried I'm gonna embarrass you or something?
00:29:25Of course not.
00:29:28Good.
00:29:29Because I'm doing it.
00:29:32I really have to do my homework.
00:29:34I love you.
00:29:46I love you, too.
00:29:47I love you, too.
00:30:04So what do we have left for the Macalester staging?
00:30:17Just a dining room set.
00:30:19Hmm.
00:30:21Why don't we do six of these with the oval dining table we saw in aisle 12?
00:30:25Anything else?
00:30:27I think that's it.
00:30:29Oh, why don't we check out and see what they have by way of benches,
00:30:32and then let's start the paperwork.
00:30:33You got it, boss.
00:30:38Hey.
00:30:39Hey, how's it going?
00:30:41Ray says she hasn't seen much of Lauren these last few weeks.
00:30:44It has been intense.
00:30:46I swear I haven't slept more than five hours since this whole thing started.
00:30:49I noticed that Lauren hasn't made an appointment for her college wellness exam.
00:30:52You want me to make one for her?
00:30:54I think I'm gonna have to wait until this is over.
00:30:57Things have just been really crazy lately.
00:30:59Um, I'm gonna call you back.
00:31:04I'll talk to you later.
00:31:10Miss Brooks?
00:31:11Oh.
00:31:13Hello, dear.
00:31:14Hi.
00:31:15How unexpected.
00:31:16Um, can I talk to you for a minute?
00:31:19The thing is, is that Lauren has been getting home really late every night,
00:31:24and I can see the toll that it's taking on her,
00:31:27and I know that if she's feeling that way,
00:31:30that I'm sure the other girls are feeling that way, too.
00:31:32You know you could be right.
00:31:35I'll see what I can do.
00:31:38After all, the girls' health and well-being is now,
00:31:41and always has been, our primary concern.
00:31:48You have no idea the load off my mind that that is.
00:31:51Of course.
00:31:53Now, if you'll excuse me.
00:31:56I really do have a million things to do.
00:31:59Sure.
00:32:00Ms. Burke, may I have a word with you, please?
00:32:09Yes, ma'am.
00:32:13How do you feel it's going?
00:32:15Are you acclimating well?
00:32:19Yes, ma'am.
00:32:21The reason I ask is because I ran into your mother,
00:32:24and she went on and on about all the complaints you seem to have.
00:32:28It has been my experience
00:32:32that complaining is a sign of weakness,
00:32:37and there is no room for weakness in my pageant.
00:32:42Do we understand each other?
00:32:45Yes, ma'am.
00:32:47Good.
00:32:49Is that your dress?
00:32:51Mm-hmm.
00:32:51Show me.
00:32:59Oh.
00:33:02Yes.
00:33:04I remember this one.
00:33:06It's very sweet,
00:33:08but it doesn't exactly have anything that stands out.
00:33:12Maybe a brighter color.
00:33:16Or something that shows a bit more skin.
00:33:20Sex it up a bit.
00:33:22After all,
00:33:24a higher slit and a lower neckline never hurt anything.
00:33:28Yeah.
00:33:28Oh, thank you, God.
00:33:39Everyone,
00:33:40Lauren has decided to grace us with her presence.
00:33:43We can begin.
00:33:44I'm really, really sorry.
00:33:46I was...
00:33:47I don't need your apology.
00:33:49I need you to be...
00:33:51on time.
00:33:52Do you understand?
00:33:53I'd expect more from Julie Simmons' daughter.
00:34:04Places!
00:34:07A one,
00:34:08a two,
00:34:09a one,
00:34:09two,
00:34:10three,
00:34:10four.
00:34:15To the left.
00:34:17To the left.
00:34:18Do you idiots not know your left from your right?
00:34:23You call that a hot kick?
00:34:25I need you to do better.
00:34:35Look at those rolls.
00:34:42Sharper with your arms, ladies.
00:34:45Quick, hit.
00:34:49I need those arms better, okay?
00:34:51Eyes up.
00:35:01I don't know how this is possible,
00:35:03but I think you're actually getting worse.
00:35:07That's it for today.
00:35:09Yeah.
00:35:09Attention, please.
00:35:25I, uh,
00:35:26found these
00:35:27in the dressing room.
00:35:29Just want to make sure
00:35:30they return to their rightful owner.
00:35:32Do they look familiar
00:35:33to anyone?
00:35:34Oh, my goodness.
00:35:36There's...
00:35:37I, uh...
00:35:38Oh, my God.
00:36:08There you are.
00:36:22Leave me alone.
00:36:23I don't want to talk to you or anyone else.
00:36:25This whole thing was a huge mistake.
00:36:26Don't say that, okay?
00:36:27You can't quit over that guy.
00:36:28He's a total jerk.
00:36:29What about over this?
00:36:32Is that enough?
00:36:34Frickin' Brianna.
00:36:36I mean, what did I do to deserve this?
00:36:38Nothing.
00:36:38But you can tell her that she wins.
00:36:42Because I'm out of here.
00:36:50Lauren, we're in here.
00:36:54How was rehearsal?
00:36:55Long.
00:36:57Anything else?
00:36:59Not really.
00:36:59Well, you have to come and look at these photos I found of your mom and I.
00:37:04They're hilarious.
00:37:05Leave me alone.
00:37:06Hard pass.
00:37:08Lauren?
00:37:09What?
00:37:10How about homework?
00:37:11I don't care.
00:37:12I mean, you don't speak to adults like that.
00:37:15Ah, it's okay.
00:37:16She didn't mean anything by it.
00:37:17All right.
00:37:19All right.
00:37:20Go do your homework.
00:37:21Hello?
00:37:36Hello?
00:37:36Hello?
00:37:38Um, hi.
00:37:39This is Lauren Burke.
00:37:40Oh.
00:37:42Hi, Lauren.
00:37:43Is, uh, everything okay?
00:37:45Uh, yeah, yeah, it's fine. I'm sorry to bother you. I was just wondering about that research job you mentioned.
00:37:54My schedule's changed, and I can do it now.
00:37:58Lauren, I'm really sorry, but she found someone else.
00:38:02Okay, uh, yeah, thanks anyway.
00:38:09Mom, I told you I'm doing my homework.
00:38:11It's Nora.
00:38:13Oh.
00:38:14Come in.
00:38:15Um, you forgot your dress.
00:38:20Oh.
00:38:21Yeah.
00:38:22Thanks.
00:38:24Looks like I'm gonna need it after all.
00:38:27Really?
00:38:28Yeah, except Miss Brooks basically told me that my dress was hideous and there's no way I could win wearing it.
00:38:34Let me see.
00:38:40Just say it.
00:38:42It's very...
00:38:44Glinda Goodwitch.
00:38:47But that's okay.
00:38:48Um, you could borrow my backup dress.
00:38:51It's in my car.
00:38:51Why would you help me?
00:38:56Because...
00:38:56Um, I want us to be friends when this is all over.
00:39:02Yeah, you're the only person I know in this town, and it would really suck if you hated me.
00:39:11What do you say?
00:39:12Lauren, we need a talk.
00:39:39What else is new?
00:39:41What is going on with you?
00:39:46Honestly, I have no idea what you're talking about.
00:39:51Okay.
00:39:54What is that?
00:39:55Nora lent it to me.
00:39:59I'm gonna wear it instead of your dress.
00:40:00Everybody agrees it's probably better I don't look like a parade float.
00:40:06I thought you liked the idea of wearing my dress.
00:40:09But the judges like red better, and they're the only ones that matter.
00:40:12Which is also why I'm changing my poem to The Raven.
00:40:15Two of them had it listed as their favorite in their bios, so I gotta give the people what they want.
00:40:20Okay?
00:40:21I'm sorry, how does that tie into your platform?
00:40:25It doesn't, but platforms don't really matter.
00:40:27Yes, they do.
00:40:28Honey, they're like the most important part.
00:40:30Maybe when you were competing.
00:40:32What is going on with your attitude?
00:40:33I just don't understand why you think you know everything about something you haven't been a part of for the last 20 years.
00:40:39Then let me be a part of this, please.
00:40:42Okay, I will take off work tomorrow, and then you and I can practice your dance together, okay?
00:40:47I would have to teach it to you.
00:40:49It would take too much time.
00:40:50I'll just work on it with Nora, okay?
00:40:54Okay.
00:40:55But thanks.
00:40:58If you need anything,
00:41:00I'm here.
00:41:03Hey, what's up?
00:41:09What's wrong?
00:41:12Are you, like, mad at me or something?
00:41:14Huh, what an astute observation.
00:41:15Yes, I am mad at you or something.
00:41:17For what?
00:41:19You just assumed I would cover your shift without even asking me.
00:41:22I did ask you.
00:41:23Okay, but you didn't wait to see if I could actually do it.
00:41:25You just assumed that I would, because I always do.
00:41:29I told you I had plans to meet up with Dylan after the game.
00:41:31I told you that.
00:41:32Who's Dylan?
00:41:33Are you serious?
00:41:36You cannot be this self-involved.
00:41:38Oh, right.
00:41:40Yeah, the smoothie guy.
00:41:41Yeah, the smoothie guy.
00:41:42I'm sorry, okay?
00:41:43I have like a million things bouncing around my head right now.
00:41:45Tell me how I fix this.
00:41:48Well, you could start by loaning me your blue sweater for my date tonight.
00:41:52Done.
00:41:52I don't suppose there's any way you could pick it up from...
00:41:56I will drop it off.
00:41:57I really am so, so sorry.
00:42:03I guess we'll see about that.
00:42:11Good luck tomorrow.
00:42:12Mom, have you seen my blue sweater?
00:42:16Yeah, it's on the drying rack.
00:42:17Oh, I have something for you.
00:42:23I made chocolate chip cookies.
00:42:26I'm good.
00:42:28Since when do you not like homemade chocolate chip cookies?
00:42:31Since I have a dress to fit into.
00:42:33I have a dress to fit into.
00:42:34I have a dress to fit into.
00:42:35Okay.
00:42:36Gather round.
00:42:37Gather round.
00:42:38Quickly.
00:42:39Miss Brooks has some announcements.
00:42:41Unfortunately, one of our judges has had an unforeseen conflict.
00:42:45But luckily, we were able to secure a true legend.
00:42:50Please join me in welcoming to the stage, Mr. Roger Hammond.
00:43:07Well, thank you for that very warm welcome.
00:43:12I can't tell you how grateful I am to be back at Starfire.
00:43:16There really is no place like home.
00:43:18Now, I'll keep this short because I know that Martin is chomping at the bit to run you gals ragged.
00:43:26But I do want to wish you all good luck and remind you to impress me.
00:43:40Nort, do you know him?
00:43:46Okay, everyone.
00:43:47We're starting in five minutes.
00:43:49Go practice.
00:43:51How could this be happening?
00:43:54Okay, you said you took care of this.
00:43:55You said I'd never have to see him again.
00:43:57You promised.
00:44:00How could this possibly be a good thing?
00:44:07Whatever.
00:44:08Okay, I'll just talk to you at home.
00:44:09Oh, God.
00:44:18Are you okay?
00:44:20Of course I am.
00:44:21Why wouldn't I be?
00:44:21Okay.
00:44:21Okay, I guess that'll have to do.
00:44:40Apparently, there have been some complaints about how late I've been keeping you.
00:44:44And I wouldn't want to get in the way of anyone's beauty sleep.
00:44:50Remember, tomorrow I need you stage ready by 5 p.m. sharp.
00:44:54Do not underestimate the amount of time some of you will need for hair and makeup.
00:45:00I cannot stress this enough.
00:45:09Dismissed.
00:45:10Oh, shh.
00:45:23Well, I guess it's a good thing I didn't hold my breath.
00:45:40I'm so sorry.
00:45:42I had it, and then I got in this whole thing with my mom.
00:45:45Oh, so now it's your mom's fault.
00:45:47Right, because nothing could ever be your fault.
00:45:50Oh, my God.
00:45:51I'm sorry.
00:45:52Why are you so mad?
00:45:53It's just a stupid sweater.
00:45:54Okay, I'm not mad about a stupid sweater.
00:45:57I'm mad because you said you'd do something, and then you didn't do it.
00:46:00Just like how I'm not mad that you asked me to cover your shift.
00:46:04I'm mad because you assumed something in your life was more important than anything in mine.
00:46:08That isn't you.
00:46:09You haven't been the same since you started this stupid pageant.
00:46:13I know.
00:46:17How was your date?
00:46:18I mean, not that you deserve to know, but yeah, it was pretty much the best night of my entire life.
00:46:28I'm glad.
00:46:30You deserve that.
00:46:32I think so, too.
00:46:36Do you want to hear about it?
00:46:38If you want to tell me.
00:46:39You okay there, Grandma?
00:46:51Yeah, just a little achy.
00:46:53I think I overdid it on my run today.
00:46:54Okay, so tell me everything.
00:46:58Don't leave out a single detail, starting with the most important part.
00:47:02Did he kiss you?
00:47:04He did?
00:47:06Was it a pack or more like a full-on make-out?
00:47:08It was like somewhere in between.
00:47:11Perfect.
00:47:12Are you going to hang out with him again?
00:47:14Yeah, we're grabbing coffee tomorrow.
00:47:16Oh, but don't worry.
00:47:16We'll be done by six.
00:47:18What's happening at six?
00:47:20Oh, duh, the pageant.
00:47:21I don't deserve a friend like you.
00:47:24Yeah, you really don't.
00:47:30Hey, are you sure you're okay?
00:47:32Yeah.
00:47:33I just, just a bad headache.
00:47:36But, um, I should probably go to bed.
00:47:40I'll see you tomorrow.
00:47:41Yeah.
00:47:47Hi, honey.
00:47:48Hi.
00:47:49Oh, my gosh, look at these.
00:47:51Look how beautiful you are.
00:47:55Aw.
00:47:56Honey, you are too.
00:47:59Not like you.
00:48:01You are the most beautiful person.
00:48:05Inside and out.
00:48:06And I am so proud of you.
00:48:09And everything that you have accomplished and how hard you have worked.
00:48:12And regardless of what happens tomorrow,
00:48:15nothing will change that.
00:48:17Why do you keep pulling at your hair?
00:48:28I'm not.
00:48:30Yes, you are.
00:48:32Is it itching you or something?
00:48:33Mom, don't.
00:48:35Let me see.
00:48:36Mom, stop.
00:48:38Lauren, let me see.
00:48:39Oh, my gosh.
00:48:43Lauren.
00:48:52How did this happen?
00:48:54It's not a big deal, okay?
00:48:55Nora just, she accidentally burned me with a curling iron.
00:48:58That's it.
00:48:59It doesn't look like a burn.
00:49:00Why would I lie to you?
00:49:01I don't know.
00:49:02Lately, you've been doing a lot of things that don't seem like you.
00:49:07What's that supposed to mean?
00:49:09The Lauren I know is independent.
00:49:11She thinks for herself.
00:49:13She's not switching her dress at the last minute.
00:49:16She's not changing a poem that means something to her
00:49:18to a poem that somebody else likes.
00:49:21But that's how you win.
00:49:23And isn't that the point of all of this?
00:49:25It's not supposed to feel like this.
00:49:28Honey, we were supposed to do this pageant
00:49:31to bring us closer together.
00:49:33Not to be at each other's throats all the time.
00:49:37Maybe this is all just too much for you to handle.
00:49:41Wait.
00:49:42Wait, what do you mean I can't handle this?
00:49:46Are you saying you're not going to let me compete?
00:49:49Are you, like, afraid I'm going to embarrass you or something?
00:49:52I'm going to, like, tarnish the memory
00:49:54of the great Julie Ann Simmons?
00:49:55What are you talking about?
00:49:57Mom, I have to do the pageant.
00:49:59I've only gotten two of the scholarships I've applied for.
00:50:02Two.
00:50:03That's nothing.
00:50:04The only way I'm going to be able to go to college
00:50:06and become a doctor is by winning Miss Starfire.
00:50:09Honey, we will figure something out.
00:50:11I promise.
00:50:11You keep saying that, but we haven't figured anything out.
00:50:14So I'm sorry if you don't like it.
00:50:17But I'm doing the pageant.
00:50:19I'm going to do whatever it takes to win.
00:50:22Amy.
00:50:23Amy.
00:50:27Oh, my God.
00:50:53Get it together, you idiot.
00:50:58Five, six, seven, eight, one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, one, two.
00:51:05Are you guys ready?
00:51:18Why on today of all days has my skin decided to turn against me?
00:51:40Seriously, I can't even see it.
00:51:44Tough break about that planet growing on your face.
00:51:48Maybe my mom will have something that can fix this.
00:51:56What? Was I supposed to lie?
00:51:58Would it have killed you?
00:52:00Yeah.
00:52:08Hi.
00:52:10Hey.
00:52:11I wanted to wish you luck really quick. How are you feeling?
00:52:13Good. Nervous. Ready for it to be over?
00:52:16Is your neck okay?
00:52:18Do you still have a headache?
00:52:19Oh, yeah. I just... I slept funny or something.
00:52:21Maybe you pulled a muscle when you were making out.
00:52:23Stop.
00:52:26Attention, congestions. It is now 15 minutes till curtain.
00:52:30I can't believe I'm doing this.
00:52:32You're going to be amazing.
00:52:33I saw if we're not terrible.
00:52:34Atta girl. Dream big.
00:52:36What's that on your arm?
00:52:40Right there.
00:52:44Oh, yeah. Who knows? My mom probably just switched detergents again, but I'm...
00:52:49Okay?
00:52:50Fingers crossed for you. I love you.
00:52:52Love you.
00:52:52I love you.
00:52:53I love you.
00:52:53I love you.
00:52:54I love you.
00:52:55And my hair.
00:52:56It's perfect.
00:52:56My skin?
00:52:57Yeah.
00:52:58And you're every... this way.
00:52:59Right this way.
00:52:59Wait, give me a smile.
00:53:00Hey, where's Nora?
00:53:02I haven't seen her.
00:53:03Okay, wait. This?
00:53:04Yeah.
00:53:05Wait.
00:53:05You might need a floss.
00:53:07What?
00:53:13I'm so surprised, but happy to see you here today.
00:53:18You've grown up into such a beautiful young woman.
00:53:22What do you want?
00:53:23You know what I want.
00:53:25I want you to promise me that you're not going to give me any more trouble, not like last time.
00:53:32I need to hear you say it.
00:53:35I promise.
00:53:40Good answer.
00:53:43It wasn't so hard, now, was it?
00:53:47There you are.
00:53:49I've been looking for you everywhere.
00:53:50They're just called places.
00:53:52Well, you should go.
00:53:53Iris hates a late start.
00:54:03Nora!
00:54:05Nothing happened.
00:54:06Okay, we both know that's not true.
00:54:08You have to tell someone.
00:54:09Who would I even tell?
00:54:10I don't know.
00:54:11Maybe your mom or Miss Brooks?
00:54:13Like, that would make a difference.
00:54:14It might!
00:54:14Why would this time be any different than all the others?
00:54:18Nothing ever happens to people like him.
00:54:21Okay, they disappear until enough time has passed that people don't even remember why they were gone in the first place.
00:54:27Just forget about it.
00:54:29That's what I'm going to do.
00:54:30But how can you let this go?
00:54:38Because you're not the only one that needs the money.
00:54:45Let's hear it for your Miss Starfire contestants!
00:54:48I'm going to let this go.
00:54:50Come on!
00:54:50Come on!
00:54:51Thank you!

00:55:29And for God's sake, don't embarrass me.
00:55:33Good luck.
00:55:39She is, isn't she?
00:55:42Yeah, she knows her style.
00:56:10Shut it down, down.
00:56:20And we move like a case.
00:56:23I can promise no one's this all.
00:56:29Sure.
00:56:30All right, let's hear it for your Miss Starfire Contextions one more time.
00:56:47Hi, are you doing okay?
00:56:50You don't look very good.
00:56:51Yeah, I'm fine.
00:56:53I'm fine.
00:56:53I just, I have this headache.
00:56:54I can't seem to shake.
00:56:56You sure?
00:56:56Yeah.
00:57:00All right, ladies and gentlemen, moving on.
00:57:09The next contestant continuing on to the final round of competition is...
00:57:17Nora-Jane Matthews!
00:57:23Oh, congratulations, Nora.
00:57:32All right, folks, the time has come.
00:57:37The final name of the contestant continuing on in the hopes of becoming Miss Teen Starfire
00:57:472025 is...
00:57:50Lauren Allison Burke!
00:57:55Looks like you weaseled your way into the top five after all.
00:58:14Wonder what you're going to do to win.
00:58:15See everyone tomorrow night, where we will crowd our new Miss Teen Starfire!
00:58:21It was so much fun.
00:58:23Oh, and the dresses were so beautiful.
00:58:25Thanks.
00:58:27Honey, I'm so excited for you.
00:58:29Look at you.
00:58:30You look amazing.
00:58:33Girl, you totally slayed.
00:58:35Sorry Jefferson had to bounce, but he'll be here tomorrow.
00:58:38Dude, how are you sweating?
00:58:39But your hands are, like, freezing.
00:58:41Yeah, it was super cold in the auditorium.
00:58:44But your mom gave me some medicine, so hopefully I'll feel a little better soon.
00:58:47Hey, folks, I know you're excited to congratulate everyone's favorite underdog,
00:58:50but I got to borrow her for a quick sec.
00:58:53She'll be back in a gif.
00:59:01Well, I think a final five appearance calls for some ice cream.
00:59:05Ray, I know I can always count on you.
00:59:07Uh, actually, Mr. Burke, I'm not feeling so great right now.
00:59:11Uh, I think I should just call my mom and have her come pick me up.
00:59:16Oh, no.
00:59:17Do you want us to drop you off?
00:59:18No, it's okay.
00:59:19You guys go.
00:59:20I just, um, I'm just, like, really, really tired.
00:59:23But I should feel better tomorrow.
00:59:25Are you sure?
00:59:26Mm-hmm.
00:59:27Let's get a text her and wait outside.
00:59:29It's too right in here.
00:59:31Okay.
00:59:33I hope she's okay.
00:59:36I'll be right back.
00:59:37Um, where are you going?
00:59:41Hi.
00:59:47Seems like a minute ago that was us.
00:59:50It does, doesn't it?
00:59:53Are you ever worried about Nora and all these adult men?
00:59:56Oh, no.
00:59:58Nora knows how to handle herself.
00:59:59I made sure of that.
01:00:01But she shouldn't have to, should she?
01:00:04What am I supposed to do?
01:00:06Have her quit the circuit?
01:00:07That is not an option.
01:00:10So you're saying that this does happen?
01:00:12I'm saying, how about you take care of your kid and I'll take care of mine?
01:00:17That's what I'm saying.
01:00:17Lauren?
01:00:26Lauren?
01:00:27Lauren?
01:00:34There you are.
01:00:35I want her to talk to you.
01:00:39Make sure there wasn't any confusion over what you saw.
01:00:43There's no confusion.
01:00:45I know exactly what I saw.
01:00:47What are you going to do about it?
01:00:50Nora asked me not to say anything.
01:00:52Well, Nora's a smart girl.
01:00:54Now, the question is, are you?
01:01:10I can't hear that.
01:01:22I can't hear that.
01:01:24Excuse us.
01:01:24Lauren?
01:01:24Excuse us.
01:01:25Excuse us.
01:01:26Move.
01:01:26Excuse me.
01:01:27No.
01:01:27No.
01:01:28Move.
01:01:28Move.
01:01:28Sorry.
01:01:29Oh.
01:01:30Right.
01:01:32Oh, my God.
01:01:37Excuse me.
01:01:38Excuse me, Mom.
01:01:40Lauren?
01:01:40Lauren?
01:01:41Lauren?
01:01:46Where are you going?
01:01:46It's okay, honey.
01:01:49Is she okay?
01:01:52Honey, it's going to be okay.
01:01:54Is she okay?
01:01:58Look, she's okay.
01:02:16All right.
01:02:21She could use this.
01:02:39Thanks.
01:02:41I just...
01:02:42I don't understand how this is happening.
01:02:45She had a headache.
01:02:47I gave her some medicine.
01:02:48She went back to bed.
01:02:49It's just a headache.
01:02:52She's going to be okay.
01:02:54What if she's not?
01:02:57Ms. Kippins, I'm Dr. Mullen.
01:02:59I'm the attending physician on your daughter's case.
01:03:02I just want to give you a quick update on what we know.
01:03:05So, based on Ray's age, symptoms, and how rapidly her case has progressed,
01:03:09as well as the preliminary results of the spinal tap,
01:03:12we suspect she has meningococcal meningitis,
01:03:15which is a type of bacterial meningitis, and a bloodstream infection.
01:03:18It's called invasive meningococcal disease, and while it's uncommon, it can have serious consequences.
01:03:25Oh, God.
01:03:27We will be able to confirm once we get the final test results in the coming days.
01:03:30But she was vaccinated.
01:03:32I made sure of it.
01:03:34According to her record, she was vaccinated for serial groups A, C, W, and Y, but not B.
01:03:39At this time, we cannot confirm what serial group is responsible here.
01:03:45How did I miss this? I'm a nurse.
01:03:47A lot of teens aren't vaccinated against meningitis B,
01:03:50but there are vaccines that can help, and not all parents know to ask about them.
01:03:54So, do we know how this happened to her?
01:03:57There are so many possibilities.
01:03:59The bacteria can live in the back of the nose and throat,
01:04:02and can spread through respiratory droplets.
01:04:0516 to 23-year-olds tend to be one of the most affected groups,
01:04:07simply by the nature of their activities.
01:04:09Like, what kind of activities?
01:04:11Sharing food, drinks, utensils, kissing,
01:04:14just generally being in close contact with one another.
01:04:17Are you saying this is, like, her own fault?
01:04:19No. No, honey, nobody is saying that.
01:04:23So, what do we do next? What's the plan?
01:04:25If her condition continues to worsen,
01:04:27we may need to put her into a medically induced coma
01:04:30to make it easier to treat her
01:04:31and to ensure that she gets the rest that her body needs.
01:04:35Currently, we have her on intravenous antibiotics
01:04:38in the hopes that it helps fight the infection.
01:04:40That's good, though, right?
01:04:42The medicine will make her better.
01:04:44That's what we're hoping for, sweetie.
01:04:46Miss Gibbons, I need you to understand
01:04:51how incredibly sick Ray is.
01:04:54One in ten people who contract meningitis die
01:04:57despite treatment, sometimes within 24 hours.
01:05:02And even if she survives,
01:05:04there is a chance that she will have permanent complications.
01:05:08We're going to do everything we can for Ray,
01:05:11but I just want you to be fully aware
01:05:13of all the possible outcomes.
01:05:16Is there anything more that we should be doing?
01:05:21We've alerted the health department,
01:05:22and they'll reach out to the school to do contact tracing.
01:05:25That will help determine who may have been in close contact with Ray
01:05:28and need antibiotics to help prevent any additional cases.
01:05:32Expect a call from them.
01:05:33In the meantime, make a list of anyone Ray's come into close contact with
01:05:38in the last week or so.
01:05:39I'd recommend that both you and she
01:05:42start a precautionary course of antibiotics immediately.
01:05:46And if she has not been vaccinated,
01:05:49consider speaking with her pediatrician about it.
01:05:51Of course.
01:05:53I'll give you an update as soon as I have one.
01:05:56Okay?
01:05:57And again, I'm so very sorry.
01:05:59She's going to be okay.
01:06:04She's going to be okay.
01:06:07She's all right.
01:06:09She's going to be okay.
01:06:10Thank you so much for squeezing us in today.
01:06:22And I'll book the appointment for the next dose before we leave.
01:06:26Thanks.
01:06:30Mom?
01:06:32What's that, honey?
01:06:33Is there really a chance that Ray could die?
01:06:42The doctors are going to do everything that they can
01:06:45to make sure that doesn't happen, okay?
01:06:49But she still might.
01:06:59Okay?
01:07:03It's going to be okay.
01:07:10Can I come in?
01:07:13Close the door.
01:07:21I assume you're here to discuss the unfortunate incident of last night.
01:07:26I guess that's one way to put it.
01:07:30I just thought you'd want to notify the other contestants.
01:07:33Actually, anybody in attendance, I guess, should be made aware of the situation.
01:07:37Why on earth would I want to do that?
01:07:40Are we talking about the same thing?
01:07:43I don't know, are we?
01:07:45What are you talking about?
01:07:48Well, I guess you first.
01:07:53Last night, I happened upon Lauren and one of our judges together.
01:07:58And seeing how Lauren is an inexperienced young woman, I can see how she mistook his offer of advice as an inappropriate advance.
01:08:08I have no doubt with Lauren's propensity to exaggerate.
01:08:13Okay, but just wait a minute.
01:08:14She has probably already blown the entire situation completely out of proportion, which is why I feel it best and in her best interest that she withdraw from the pageant.
01:08:29In exchange for agreeing to never discuss the event, the pageant will offer Lauren a Miss Congeniality scholarship in the amount of $10,000.
01:08:41But Lauren hasn't done anything wrong.
01:08:45Why should she have to quit?
01:08:46Because I'm not going to allow some brat who is never going to win anyway ruin it for everyone else.
01:08:56So I suggest you get down from your high horse and take my incredibly generous offer so we can all get on with our lives.
01:09:07This offer.
01:09:08I can't wait to show this to the police.
01:09:18I wouldn't do that if I were you.
01:09:21Why is that?
01:09:22Because if you decide to involve the authorities, I will have no choice but to issue a statement announcing that Lauren was disqualified when it came to my knowledge that she attempted to blackmail a pageant employee.
01:09:38What the hell are you talking about?
01:09:41Lauren threatened to go public with this photo unless Drew used his influence with the judges to obtain a better position.
01:09:52No one will ever believe this.
01:09:57Maybe not.
01:09:59If it's just his word against hers.
01:10:01But luckily, I have several witnesses with sworn affidavits that say she confided her plan in them.
01:10:10Just think what people will say.
01:10:11And I've even heard that some colleges have been known to rescind acceptances for moral transgressions.
01:10:21Now, would you like to borrow my pen?
01:10:23I don't know how you live with yourself.
01:10:35Starfire is my legacy.
01:10:36I will protect it at all costs.
01:10:41The clock is ticking on that offer.
01:10:42I hate to ask this, but is there even the tiniest shred of truth to any of what Iris is saying?
01:10:57Mom, I swear.
01:10:59Brianna made that picture and hung it in the dressing room to try to get me to quit.
01:11:03We need to know everything that has gone on.
01:11:06And I mean everything.
01:11:07Please.
01:11:07Please.
01:11:08There's a lot.
01:11:15And it's kind of hard to explain.
01:11:18It's like they're manipulating you.
01:11:20All the time.
01:11:22They're always telling you the other girls are talking about you behind your back.
01:11:25Or the coaches are calling us stupid or lazy.
01:11:29Wait, they're what?
01:11:30The truth is, this kind of stuff, it does happen.
01:11:35Why didn't you tell me any of this?
01:11:37Because I knew you'd make me quit.
01:11:40I just, I couldn't.
01:11:42I'd already worked so hard and I'd sacrificed so much.
01:11:46To just walk away from my only shot at being able to afford Vanderton?
01:11:52Baby, I'm sorry you felt so much pressure.
01:11:55So, what do we do?
01:11:58I think, if Ray can fight, so can I.
01:12:07I'm not here.
01:12:12All right, you ready?
01:12:14Works never say die.
01:12:15Take care of you.
01:12:18Excuse me.
01:12:20Come on, ride in.
01:12:22What the hell are you doing here?
01:12:23Isn't it obvious?
01:12:25Lauren's a finalist.
01:12:26She's here to compete.
01:12:27You're embarrassing yourself.
01:12:31I'm not embarrassed.
01:12:33Are you embarrassed?
01:12:33No.
01:12:34No, I think the only one that should be embarrassed is you.
01:12:39Who can't seem to wipe his own ass without his grandmother's permission.
01:12:44You're making a scene.
01:12:47Not yet.
01:12:48But I will.
01:12:49And those little reporters over there are going to get a front row seat.
01:12:53Excuse us.
01:12:54Love, rock, rock, rock, because you're really going to rock tonight.
01:13:03Can I believe you?
01:13:06Wow, wow, wow, wow.
01:13:13As the kids would say, that slaps.
01:13:16Let's hear one more time for Ms. Brianna Cox.
01:13:19Congratulations, Brianna.
01:13:20Now, for the final portion of our talent competition, we have a dramatic recitation.
01:13:28Put your hands together for Ms. Lauren Burke.
01:13:30I'd like to dedicate my performance tonight to my friend, Ray, who's in the ICU fighting
01:13:44for her life with meningitis B.
01:13:47And if that's the case, maybe asking why I'm here, participating in this, for being honest,
01:13:55pretty superficial event.
01:13:57If you knew me, you'd know none of this is my vibe.
01:14:03The only reason I entered Starfire in the first place was because I needed money for college.
01:14:08But then I just got so sucked into it.
01:14:12I was basically obsessed.
01:14:15It was only when Ray got sick that I remembered that I was trying to win so that I could become
01:14:19a doctor and help people.
01:14:21So, that's why I'm here.
01:14:25It's for you.
01:14:27To share Ray's story and hope it will inspire parents to check their teens' vaccination records
01:14:33and talk to their doctors.
01:14:37And now, showtime.
01:14:40Originally, I was going to recite The Raven.
01:14:44But then I thought, does anyone really need to hear the alcoholic ramblings of a man who's
01:14:50obsessed with his ex and can't seem to take the hint?
01:14:55So instead, I will be reciting The Things We Dare Not Tell by Henry Lawson.
01:15:01Because no one should have to suffer in silence.
01:15:16The fields are fair in autumn yet, and the sun's still shining there.
01:15:21But we bow our heads and brood and fret because of the mask we wear.
01:15:29Or we nod and smile the social wile and say we're doing well.
01:15:35We break our hearts for the things we must not tell.
01:15:40We fight it down, or we bear it bravely well.
01:15:43But the best of us die of a broken heart for the things we cannot tell.
01:16:07That was amazing.
01:16:13My mom made me sign that thing.
01:16:16I know.
01:16:17How's Ray?
01:16:19Her fever's coming down, but she's still super sick.
01:16:23We just wait to see if the medicine works.
01:16:26I'm taking antibiotics.
01:16:28Yeah, um, we all got a text about it.
01:16:32My mom made an appointment for me.
01:16:33Good.
01:16:35What happens now?
01:16:37I think it's the judge's questions.
01:16:39Let me double check.
01:16:40Hey, Austin, you got a program?
01:16:48Starfire is truly a one-of-a-kind experience.
01:16:53And I could not be more grateful for the time that we've spent together.
01:16:58But now, we are entering the final portion of tonight's evening.
01:17:04The all-important judge's questions.
01:17:06I'd like to invite Maddie up to the microphone first.
01:17:15Maddie's question will be coming from the esteemed Gwendolyn Allen.
01:17:20Ms. Monroe, who is your role model?
01:17:23Mrs. Brooks.
01:17:35Short, sweet, and to the point.
01:17:39Up next, we have Ms. Lauren Burke.
01:17:43Lauren's question will be coming from Starfire's most revered and longest-serving judge, Mr. Roger Hammond.
01:17:56Ms. Burke, why should you win?
01:18:00I shouldn't.
01:18:10And what's more, I don't want to.
01:18:14I don't want to be part of an organization that pits us against each other for their own entertainment.
01:18:18Who calls us fat and lazy.
01:18:21It makes us so anxious that we literally pull our own hair out.
01:18:25Who, upon learning there were criminals in their midst, chose to protect the predators rather than the children they preyed upon.
01:18:32Those are not the values I was raised with, and they are not the values I represent.
01:18:36Life is too short to compromise yourself for some cash and a crown.
01:18:42And that is why I respectfully withdraw from the Ms. Starfire pageant.
01:18:55Irish Brooks, I'm Officer Muller, this is Dr. Glasgow.
01:19:03We've got a few questions we'd like to ask you.
01:19:25Oh my god, you guys are like the cutest ever.
01:19:32I know, right?
01:19:34I just hate that you couldn't be there.
01:19:36Oh yeah, tell me about it.
01:19:37Even after I planned the whole thing.
01:19:39But the after party here was killer?
01:19:41Are you so surprised?
01:19:42Yeah, like beyond.
01:19:44I can't believe Dylan planned that whole thing.
01:19:46Yeah, it's like he likes you or something.
01:19:47Yeah.
01:19:48So, have they told you when you're going to get to go home?
01:19:53They've been holding you hostage here for weeks.
01:19:54Yeah, hopefully next week.
01:19:57Will you be able to go back to school?
01:19:59No, I'll just finish from home.
01:20:02And what about cosmetology school?
01:20:05Are you still going to be able to cut hair without, you know...
01:20:09Half my hand?
01:20:10Yeah, I guess I'll just have to learn to use scissors with three fingers.
01:20:20I'll figure it out.
01:20:22Hi.
01:20:23Hey.
01:20:24I stopped by Lauren's house and her mom said she was here.
01:20:28I hope it's okay I came by.
01:20:29Yeah, of course.
01:20:30The more the merrier.
01:20:31Pull up some bed.
01:20:32These are for you.
01:20:33Oh, thank you.
01:20:34These are gorgeous.
01:20:35Yeah.
01:20:38So, how are you doing?
01:20:39So much better.
01:20:41I'll have to do some physical therapy, and I lost some hearing in my right ear.
01:20:46And, you know, obviously.
01:20:48Yeah.
01:20:48But the doctor said it could have been a lot worse.
01:20:51I guess some people experience, like, brain damage, kidney failure, even, like, lose a leg.
01:20:57Really?
01:20:58You got vaccinated, right?
01:21:00Yeah.
01:21:01My mom and I talked to my doctor and decided I should get it.
01:21:04Does my heart some good to know that I could be a cautionary tale for you, too?
01:21:07No, seriously.
01:21:10I didn't know anything about meningitis before all of this.
01:21:13Yeah.
01:21:14Let alone that there are vaccines for it.
01:21:16Well, you're doing amazing for someone who just lost two fingers.
01:21:19And how are you doing?
01:21:22You know, with everything?
01:21:25Okay.
01:21:26Yeah.
01:21:27Um, my mom and I started therapy.
01:21:29Wow.
01:21:29How's that going?
01:21:31It's intense.
01:21:32But good.
01:21:33You know?
01:21:34Yeah.
01:21:35That's awesome.
01:21:36Yeah.
01:21:36I should probably tell you why I'm here.
01:21:39Other than, of course, to make sure that you're okay.
01:21:41Obviously.
01:21:42Um, I'm sure you heard they did an investigation into Starfire and, um, found a lot of impropriety.
01:21:50Like, a lot.
01:21:51Shocker.
01:21:52Um, and rather than deal with, like, a million civil suits, Starfire's just decided to settle
01:21:58with everyone.
01:21:59And I figured, after all you did, um, it's only fair you get half of mine.
01:22:04Oh, my God.
01:22:10Wow.
01:22:16My first impulse was to tear it up.
01:22:20And what was your second impulse?
01:22:23I thought about when I first decided to do the pageant, and we talked about what I might
01:22:28gain from the experience.
01:22:31Oh, yeah.
01:22:33Don't remind me.
01:22:34But that's the thing.
01:22:35I gained so much.
01:22:38Just not in the ways that we thought it would be.
01:22:44So, when you think about it, I kind of won.
01:22:50Yeah.
01:22:52I kind of did.
01:22:53And you know what I said I would use the money for if I won.
01:22:59Vanderton?
01:23:00Vanderton.
01:23:01Vanderton.
01:23:04Vanderton.
01:23:07Oh, my God!
01:23:10Oh, my God!
01:23:11Oh, my God!
01:23:12You're going to Vanderton.
01:23:13I'm going to Vanderton.
01:23:14Vanderton!
01:23:14Thank you!
01:23:14Please welcome Ms. Lauren Burke.
01:23:39First of all, I want to thank you for letting me come talk today.
01:23:43For anyone who doesn't know me, my name is Lauren Burke, and I'm freshman pre-med,
01:23:49and if everything goes according to plan, future pediatrician.
01:23:53Professor Holsey told me about the work you all do in terms of student health awareness
01:23:57and thought the app I created might be a helpful tool for you to use.
01:24:02About a year ago, my best friend almost died from meningitis B.
01:24:07And watching her go through that, it made me realize that people our age are so focused on the future
01:24:16that we sometimes forget how to keep ourselves healthy today.
01:24:21So that is where HealthyBridge.org comes in.
01:24:26HealthyBridge.org tells you exactly what health services you may need and where you can find them.
01:24:31And make sure you can get accurate information and know the right questions to ask
01:24:36so you can make informed decisions about your mental and your physical health
01:24:40so nothing and no one falls through the cracks.
01:24:44Any questions?
