00:00The European Commissioner for Climate defends the strategy presented to reach a 90% reduction of CO2 emission by 2040.
00:09In an interview with Euronews, Webka Hoekstra explains his stance on giving carbon credit
00:14in which the EU countries pay other countries to cut their carbon emissions.
00:20However, critics question how reliable and fair the plan is,
00:23particularly as member states are farming out their carbon emission responsibilities to developing countries.
00:31In this hugely complicated geopolitical world, there is a lot of value also for us
00:36in building more bridges with our friends in Africa and Latin America.
00:40They like, they have, they often lack the capital, they often lack the opportunity.
00:45Hoekstra also justifies the measure by the need to reduce carbon emissions while balancing it with competitiveness.
00:52Critics say the Commission is chipping away at the EU's Green Deal provisions.
00:57Hoekstra says he can do both.
00:59There is some sort of a discrepancy between, on the one hand, economic growth and, on the other hand, climate action.
01:07And our job is to make sure that we continue with climate action,
01:12but do so in a way that works for our people, works for our companies and works for our economy.
01:17The 2040 target is just a step along the way before reaching the carbon neutrality goal in 2050.
