As we hit the halfway point of 2025, AccuWeather's Tony Laubach breaks down the busiest states for tornadoes so far this year.
Transcript
00:00It's been above the average pace for reported tornadoes as well this year.
00:05Yeah, ACCUA, the meteorologist and storm chaser, Tony Laubach,
00:08he joins us live right now from northern Colorado to break down
00:10which states have been the hotspots so far this year.
00:13Tony?
00:17Well, and we're talking more traditional areas this year.
00:20We kind of talked about the reinvigoration,
00:22especially over the last couple of years of the traditional tornado alley,
00:25the Central Plains.
00:26We kind of talked about states like Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas being the hotspots for tornadoes,
00:31and that has been the case in a couple of those states,
00:34but we are certainly well above the historical average
00:37in terms of the number of reported tornadoes to the point this year.
00:42In fact, let's show you that map.
00:43You see a lot of colors on the map right now, and you see that total there, 1,296.
00:48Now, this isn't completely all tornadoes.
00:51These are tornado reports, so make sure you get that right.
00:53A lot of these are still being confirmed in some areas,
00:56but that is a good indication of just how many we have seen, 1,296.
01:01But look at where the hotspots are.
01:02They're in the Midwest.
01:03We see Missouri and Illinois up along the top.
01:05Mississippi, also over 100 reports for the year.
01:08They have typically been at the top of the list the last couple of years,
01:11but Texas is the biggie for the year right now.
01:14We've seen almost 150 tornado reports in the state of Texas alone,
01:18but look at the rest of the map there, 60-some in Oklahoma.
01:22You get into Kansas and Nebraska.
01:23You see, again, Tornado Alley kind of coming back to life.
01:26We'll show you some of those tornadoes.
01:27This has been an active year for me chasing as well as I've been pretty much,
01:31pretty much going all across the country, tracking storms all the way from as far east
01:35as Pennsylvania, as far north as the Dakotas, and as far south as Texas,
01:39which has seen, again, the most tornadoes so far this year amongst all the rest of the states.
01:44The number of reported tornadoes, almost 1,300, exceeds what we saw all of last year,
01:50and we're only halfway done with the season.
01:52Now, the typical tornado season, we talk about going from kind of mid-March into June,
01:58and then we start to lull as we get into the summer,
02:00but there will be areas where we'll see increased tornado potential.
02:03That's going to include tropical systems that make landfall in the U.S.
02:07Those typically have some tornado potential with them as well.
02:10And then we get the occasional one-off event here and there between July and August,
02:15and then maybe a secondary season into fall.
02:17So very likely we're going to see those numbers continue to grow,
02:21and we'll see where we come to rest by the time the season ends.
02:24Really, it's going to be those early 2010s where we saw some of the higher numbers.
02:28Those are going to be the ones that we are certainly going to be competing with.
02:32Still have not seen any EF5s.
02:34That is good news.
02:34That is the strongest a tornado can be rated right now,
02:37but we have seen a few of the EF4 variety across pretty much various states.
02:43We've seen several of those throughout the year.
02:44So it has been a very, very busy year for tornadoes for sure,
02:49and again, kind of more typical than what we've seen the last few years
02:53where it's been like early and late season.
02:55This year it has been primarily that mid-March to June time frame,
02:59and June certainly ended with some incredible tornadoes up in the Dakotas.
03:02Absolutely did there, Tony.
03:03We appreciate all that you do here.
03:05I know that the chase season is not over for you,
03:07but it begins to look a little different as we get deeper into the tropical and hurricane season.
03:12So Tony Law back there in Johnstown, Colorado, joining us live on the AccuWeather Network.
