Intense winds slam the southern Plains during severe storms

AccuWeather's Tony Laubach reported live from Oklahoma on the night of Oct. 30 as severe thunderstorms rocked the region with powerful winds, knocking out power and even flipping tractor trailers.

00:00And our top story this evening is the severe weather in the central U.S. and

00:05check this out a destructive severe warned storm knocked out the power in

00:09Perry Oklahoma not that long ago. Yeah this is the way that it looked here

00:15video coming to us from meteorologist Tony Laubach and he joins us now with a

00:19closer look at what happened in this area and Tony also just northeast of

00:23Kansas City we got a severe thunderstorm warning not for downtown but down to the

00:26south the southern plains this is a nasty storm that you've been experiencing here

00:30in northern Oklahoma. Yeah and it's been dragging itself out I mentioned in the

00:38last hour when we talked we were kind of waiting for some of those heavier cores

00:42to roll through you saw some of that video in the midst of that core and

00:45you're seeing that now we had some very strong winds probably gusting 60-70

00:49miles per hour it usually takes about 60 to really start rocking this car and

00:54that was about what I was experiencing there in the truck stop it was about

00:57about five minutes of that wind before we lost power with some of the stronger

01:01gusts we have got reports south of Perry of a semi truck that has been blown off

01:07I-35 so working our way down that way kind of following the line as

01:12it's pushing its way through we had a little bit of hail in there as well but

01:16really it was the wind that strong wind 60-70 maybe even approaching 80 miles

01:21per hour we did get a report from emergency management of an estimated

01:24wind gust just to the southwest of Perry prior to our power going out at about

01:2980 miles per hour so these are very intense storms as you mentioned haven't

01:33seen much in the way of tornadic activity yet that has been some of the

01:37good news we are seeing kind of an uptick in I would say hints of that

01:42tornadic activity we've seen a few little notches look few little hooks

01:46that have appeared briefly out of this line so it is something we are watching

01:50very closely as you see behind me and around me other than the flashes of

01:54lightning we are in dark hours now so getting to spot these storms

01:58particularly embedded in lines are very very difficult and very very dangerous

02:02so for folks that are in Northeast Oklahoma even the Oklahoma City area

02:07north of the Oklahoma City area right now as this line is continuing to extend

02:10down to the southwest make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings the

02:14AccuWeather app weather radio any number of warnings that you can get have a

02:18redundant plan in place you can receive these warnings because again you simply

02:22can't walk outside take a look at the skies and see what's coming at you here

02:26in the middle of the night and again that's even more dangerous when you mix

02:29these storm modes when you don't have discrete isolated supercells you've got

02:34clusters of storms so these spin-ups these QLCS type tornadoes spin up in a

02:38hurry they're not always detectable by radar because they do happen very very

02:42quickly and again it just takes a one in the wrong spot to be in a dangerous

02:45situation so that is going to be the big threat here in addition to those

02:49damaging winds again 60 to 80 miles per hour and you might be looking at some of

02:53the wind-driven hail as well so again we have received reports of a semi blown

02:56off I-35 south of Perry we know the power is out in Perry you saw some of

03:01that video there as some of those more intense winds rolled their way through

03:04so expecting a very active night to continue probably well into the evening

03:08maybe into the early morning hours as we get on the Thursday so we've got those

03:11tornado watches in effect we got the severe thunderstorm watches and again as

03:15you mentioned Jeff we're talking about this threat from here in Oklahoma all

03:18the way up to Iowa all right Tony we appreciate your reporting great video as

03:23always there and he's on top of it there in Perry Oklahoma and Tony when we take

03:28a look at some of these reports here on the graphic you can see we have had

03:31reports of ping-pong ball-sized hail near Mulhall Oklahoma and here is that

03:35the report their overturned tractor-trailer on I-35 near the Orlando

03:39area and that's what Tony is going to ultimately check out just a little bit

03:43south of his location but the peach colored warning destructive severe

03:47thunderstorm warning here in Noble County of Oklahoma Payne County Tony's

03:51right in the heart of Noble County as we travel up by night up to the northeast a

03:56little bit east of I-35 Osage County severe thunderstorm warning there then

04:00we get up into areas like northern parts of Washington County
