00:00Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo signed a U.S.-brokered peace agreement on Friday,

00:07raising hopes for an end to fighting that has killed thousands and displaced hundreds of

00:12thousands more this year. The two African countries' foreign ministers, alongside U.S.

00:20Secretary of State Marco Rubio, signed the agreement in Washington. It pledged to implement

00:27a 2024 deal that would see Rwandan troops withdraw from eastern Congo within 90 days,

00:33according to a provisional agreement seen by Reuters. Congo Foreign Minister Therese Kayekwamba-Wagner

00:39said the agreement was signed with citizens in the east in mind. Those who have suffered the most

00:45are watching. They are expecting this agreement to be respected and we cannot fail them.

00:50The agreement marks a breakthrough in talks held by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration

00:58and aims to attract billions of dollars of western investment to a region rich in minerals like cobalt

01:04and lithium. Trump said his administration will continue to work with all of the parties in the

01:10deal and that there would be penalties if it is violated.
