00:00Surgery for a turf toe injury in his right foot. Now the team says that Triple J was hurt during a live basketball run outside of the team's facility. There's currently no timetable for his return, but he is expected to make a full recovery. Now the news comes just one day after the Grizzlies and Jackson Jr. agreed to a five-year, $240 million Supermax extension.
00:22For more, I'm joined by CBS Sports NBA writer Sam Quinn. Sam, this news comes just 24 hours after Jaron Jackson Jr. signed a five-year, $240 million contract extension. What is your reaction to the timing of this?
00:37I hope the ink's dry. I'm not a doctor. I'm not even going to try to pretend to play one on TV. Toe injuries tend to be pretty tricky, right? They can be weeks. They can be months. The fact that he's having this procedure suggests that it's going to take a little while for him to get back.
00:52Now, we're early in the offseason. It's July. They have a little bit of time to work with here, but the Grizzlies do have some concerns, right? Zach Eady's going to miss the start of the season with his own injury. Brandon Clark missed the end of last season with a knee injury. The Grizzlies right now, it's July, so we don't have to panic yet. Starting to get a little bit thin in the front court. Thankfully, we've got several more months before the game start, but for the time being, it's not a great look.
01:16Yeah. Now, I mean, we see a lot of different types of injuries in the NBA, right? Turf toe, obviously, more associated with football or soccer. Yes, the NBA is not played on turf. It's just a colloquial expression for hyperextension of the toe. But what do you make of this type of injury from Jackson?
01:33Yeah, Jaron has had his fair share of lower body injuries. He's had a torn meniscus. He's had foot injuries. He's had knee issues. It's scary when you're talking about big men, right? Like, when you're that tall and you have lower body injuries, they can tend to pile on top of one another.
01:50He just extended for five years. This is a little bit concerning, obviously, if you're Memphis and you just invested this much money in a player who's had injury issues in the past.
01:59So, fortunately, they have several months now before the season starts. They can get him back up to 100%. There's no reason to rush. But it is a concerning injury for somebody who's had these issues in the past.
02:09And we've talked about this, too. I mean, a big man, especially dealing with a foot injury or a lower body extremity injury, is a tricky one to navigate.
02:16But what would it mean for the Grizzlies if he's expected to miss extended time? Yeah, it would be. It'd be really tough for them, right? They did just trade Desmond Bain.
02:24You know, they're not going backwards. They're not trying to rebuild this season. But they want to be competitive. They're not going to be championship contenders without Bain.
02:32But they just signed Ty Jerome for guard depth. I think that's going to be helpful. Without Zach Eadie early in the season, if Jaron Jackson is hobbled, you don't know what you're going to get out of Brandon Clark from a health standpoint.
02:42The front court starts to get pretty thin. They did thankfully retain Santi Aldama, another backup big man who can shoot a little bit, fill in for Jaron Jackson if he does need to miss time.
02:52But injuries have been such a problem for Memphis over and over and over again. Ja Morant hasn't even gotten hurt yet. We'll probably get there early in the season.
03:00Had to go put the yet on there, didn't you, Sam? We'll see how it goes. Hopefully wishing Jaron Jackson Jr. a speedy recovery on that turf.
03:07Sam Quinn, thanks as always for the insight. As we take a look at Triple J's career ranks in Grizzlies history, when you look at points, he is seventh in franchise history, rebounds ninth, third in the franchise in terms of blocks, and fourth in three points made.
03:37Pits under my boobs. Tough news out of Memphis, where Grizzlies star Jaron Jackson Jr. is set to undergo surgery for turf toe injury in his right foot.
03:47Now, the team says that Triple J was hurt during a live basketball run outside of the team's facility.
03:52There's currently no timetable for his return, but he is expected to make a full recovery.
03:58Now, the news comes just one day after the Grizzlies and Jackson Jr. agreed to a five-year, $240 million Supermax extension.
04:08For more welcoming in CBS Sports Injury expert Marty Jaramillo.
04:12Marty, Grizzlies have not announced a timeline for Jaron Jackson Jr., but from your experience, how much time should we expect him to miss?
04:20Madeline, I'm hoping the Grizzlies fans understand this is just temporary, because I'm sure they were just floored by the news.
04:29Okay, so he sustained a turf toe injury. What is that? Well, it's the big toe and a sprain, or more specifically, a hyperextension injury of the big toe.
04:40So if this is the foot, the big toe goes all the way back and tears the undersurface soft tissue, connective tissue, ligaments, and tendons.
04:49Now, typically, these injuries are grade one or grade two, and they're gradual, and particularly, it occurs much more in football.
04:56That's from the name turf.
04:58That said, he sustained a very serious, more aggressive-type movement, where that joint just went past its available limit.
05:06Now, he'll have surgery momentarily, and the window is three to five months, right?
05:13On average, about five months. So, having surgery at the beginning of July takes him to November.
05:22I don't expect him to miss any more than two months following the start of the season and make a full recovery.
05:30Yeah, fortunately for Jaron and the Grizzlies, this is happening in July in the offseason.
05:34But, Marty, why is turf toe such a tough injury for players to deal with?
05:39Well, it's a great question, Madeline, because the push-off, to get a stable push-off off the foot,
05:46that all the front of the foot has to literally have a stable base, and you have to explode off of that.
05:53Sixty percent of your body weight is on that first toe.
05:57So, if you don't have the proper mobility, the proper stability of that toe, you just lose all power.
06:03So, it's an absolute, one of the most difficult and one of the most painful injuries,
06:08but the surgery is quite perfected, and he'll do well.
06:11But, sixty percent of the body weight goes on that big toe.
06:15Marty Jaramillo, thank you so much for breaking this one down, and for the insight, as always.
06:21Let's take a look at these notable Grizzlies contracts.
06:24Of course, the headliners here, John Morant and Jaron Jackson, Jr.
06:28Jackson, Jr. just signed his yesterday, one day prior to the Grizzlies announcing this turf toe injury
06:35that, as Marty just said, could keep him out until November.
06:40Here you go.
06:40That's the number one question right now when it comes to Giannis and Tedokounmpo remaining with the Milwaukee Bucs.
06:46Milwaukee was busy on Tuesday.
06:48They planned to sign former Pacers center Miles Turner to a four-year, $107 million deal.
06:54Turner heads to Milwaukee after spending the first ten seasons of his NBA career with the Pacers,
06:59who are coming off an NBA Finals loss to the Thunder.
07:03Now, in a corresponding move, the Bucs are waiving Damian Lillard in an effort to clear cap space for Turner.
07:09The Bucs will stretch out the $113 million left on Lillard's deal over the next five seasons.
07:15Lillard tore his Achilles in the first round of the playoffs against Indiana
07:19and is expected to miss most, if not all, of next season.
07:25For more, I'm now joined by CBS Sports NBA writer Sam Quinn.
07:29Sam, lots to get into.
07:31Let's start with Giannis, though.
07:32Reportedly not pleased after the Bucs waived Damian Lillard,
07:35despite the fact that Lillard is going to miss most of, if not all, of next season with the torn Achilles.
07:40Why do you think Giannis would feel this way?
07:42Yeah, I mean, this is a player that he pushed for them to acquire two years ago, right?
07:46He's needed a secondary scorer to come in and help him.
07:49Even though he's out for the year, he probably would have hoped, let's get Miles Turner,
07:52and then when Damian Lillard comes back, that trio can be very, very effective.
07:56Now, Giannis and the Bucs have had a bit of a trend over the last several years.
08:002020, he's one year away from free agency.
08:02They get Drew Holiday.
08:03Now he's happy.
08:04He signs an extension.
08:052023, same thing.
08:07They get Damian Lillard, signs an extension.
08:09It's a little different this time around.
08:11Giannis isn't eligible for an extension this offseason.
08:14He's not eligible until next offseason.
08:16That means the Bucs haven't really bought themselves any extra comfort here, right?
08:20They still need to build a competitive team for this year to make sure that he wants to stay.
08:25Are they going to be able to do that?
08:27We'll find out in the coming days.
08:28We will find that out for sure.
08:30But around the same time as the Lillard news came out,
08:32the Bucs did make a splash signing Miles Turner to a four-year, $107 million deal.
08:37Now Giannis reportedly campaigned for this signing, and, well, he got it.
08:42Sam, what's your grade for this move?
08:44I'm going to give the signing itself a B.
08:47There are very few centers in the entire NBA that fit next to Giannis, right?
08:52They need a shooting big man.
08:54They had that in Brooke Lopez for a long time.
08:55They got it.
08:56He's declined a little bit defensively over the last few years,
08:59but he's been playing in an Indiana system that really doesn't value rim protection.
09:03They prefer to stop threes.
09:04Now he's playing next to Giannis.
09:06You have extra help near the basket.
09:08That's going to help their defense a lot.
09:10The risk here is enormous, right?
09:13Not only are you paying the $27 million a year to get Miles Turner,
09:17you're also paying the $22 million on top of that
09:20that you have to pay to wave and stretch Damian Lillard.
09:22That's going to last five years.
09:24If this goes wrong, that is going to be really dangerous for the Bucs
09:28as they rebuild either with Giannis or maybe a little bit more likely
09:32if this goes south without him moving forward.
09:35And just a little moment for these Pacers fans.
09:37I mean, Miles Turner was on the trade block conversation for a decade.
09:40Now he leaves in free agency.
09:42A little bit of pain right there for that one, right?
09:45Oh, absolutely right.
09:46Not only do you lose him, you lose him to your biggest rival.
09:49You lose him to the Bucs.
09:50You played them in the playoffs two years in a row.
09:52You have, you know, all of those harsh regular season games,
09:55Tyrese Halliburton doing the day and time, you know,
09:57the game ball issue that they had in one of those games.
10:00These two teams hate each other.
10:02And in the span of nine days, not only do you lose your best player
10:05for an entire season with this torn Achilles,
10:07but then you lose your third best player to your biggest rival.
10:11It's a disaster of a week so far for the Pacers.
10:14This is clearly just a financial move.
10:16They are trying to duck the luxury tax.
10:18They've managed to do that just by losing their starting center.
10:21They didn't have to trade anybody else off.
10:23But I do wonder, the Pacers don't tank, right?
10:26They're going to try to be somewhat competitive next year.
10:28Are they going to go after another center?
10:30Are they going to try to get DeAndre Ayton,
10:33who they signed to an offer sheet in 2022?
10:35That's what I'm watching for here.
10:37But for a team that never tanks, giving up a good player
10:40and not getting anything in return, never a great sign.
10:43That's a tough one.
10:44That's a tough one indeed.
10:45Now, Damian Lillard, let's talk about Dame time.
10:47He's got a long recovery ahead of him, coming off a ruptured Achilles.
10:50Now he is a free agent.
10:51So, Sam, when you look at Dame, what is next for him?
10:54This is actually a best-case scenario for Damian Lillard, I think, right?
10:58He didn't want to go to Milwaukee.
10:59He wanted to go to Miami.
11:01Now he gets to pick his team.
11:02And not only does he get to pick the team, money doesn't matter.
11:05He's getting his money from Milwaukee either way.
11:07He can take his time.
11:08He can go back to Portland, recover near his family from this torn Achilles,
11:13and then come back on his own timetable with any team that he wants.
11:16If he wants to contend, he can hop on with a contender.
11:18If he wants to pick a team with a certain role, he can do that.
11:22I have to imagine Damian Lillard, for the minimum, is going to attract attention from all over the league,
11:27no matter when he's healthy, no matter when he's ready.
11:29It might not be this year.
11:31It might take him some time.
11:32Torn Achilles tend to take a year to recover from.
11:34Maybe he comes back for the stretch run.
11:36Maybe he sits out this year entirely.
11:38But regardless, given the price point you'd expect Damian Lillard to sign at now,
11:42he's going to be a pretty desirable free agent.
11:44Yeah, and you know what?
11:45He's got that paycheck coming in while he is recovering from that Achilles.
11:48That works out pretty well for Damian.
