00:00A dedicated plastic waste sorting facility has officially opened along
00:09Sungai Klang in Selangor, marking a significant step in reducing plastic
00:12waste sent to landfills and promoting recycling. Natural Resources and
00:17Environmental Sustainability Ministry Secretary-General Datuk Dr. Ching Tu
00:21said the facility, developed by the Ocean Cleanup, is the organization's first
00:26purpose-built site for sorting plastics collected by its river cleaning vessels,
00:30with an emphasis on recycling. The initiative is a collaboration between
00:34the Ocean Cleanup and its partners, Landasan Lumayan Senderian Berhad, LLSB, J&K
00:42Wonderland Foundation, and Coca-Cola Malaysia.
00:45With the new improved log boom, basically cover like 90-80% of the river, so we are
00:49able to catch more than 90%, so then the catch will go up. So maybe there's less
00:55stress in the river, but we will catch more. And then hopefully, in due time, like
01:00more programs, like society, then that amount will go down again. And that's what we
01:06are basically hoping.
01:07Klang Royal City Council MBDK Mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain, who officiated the launch
01:12on Wednesday, said the project demonstrated the power of multi-stakeholder
01:16collaboration.
01:48penduduk.
01:49Operated by LLSB, the facility will process waste collected by Interceptor 002, a solar-powered
01:55river cleaning vessel equipped with a log boom system designed to trap debris
01:59before it reaches the ocean.
02:24With support from CNH Industrial and Orca Chica Malaysia, some of the collected
02:29plastic will be transformed into construction materials, granules and pellets,
02:33supporting a circular economy approach.
02:37Amanda Lin, Senior Director of Franchise Operations for the Coca-Cola Company in Singapore, Malaysia
02:43and Brunei, said the initiative aligns with the company's regional commitment to prevent
02:49plastic from entering the ocean.
02:50The company is very committed to trying to drive bottle-to-bottle recycling, because it
02:55is actually very important for us. The ability for us to create the right infrastructure is
03:00important because it helps the entire value chain be more effective as well. So we stand
03:05here today not just to say we are very grateful to be a partner, but it is also to say let's
03:10find other ways for us to be able to drive a stronger value chain through public-private
03:15partnerships from the upstream as well as the downstream.
03:18To date, the Ocean Cleanup's Interceptor 002 and 005 have removed nearly 3,000 tons of waste from
03:25the Klang River as it flows through Kuala Lumpur's industrial areas.
