00:00I'm Janet and I'm a retired visiting home nurse definitely I am a hoarder yes
00:29you can open the back doors but you gotta squeeze through I just walk through the laundry room and
00:46then I walk across and go to the chair my name is Beth and I'm Janet's daughter the inside of the
00:58house is absolutely dreadful and I just can't believe that my mom lives like that I haven't
01:12had heat for two or three years but I I don't have any problem with it because even in the
01:18coldest winter I'm as warm as toast when my mom has to go to the bathroom she walks out the back
01:36door and just goes outside there I do not have an outhouse out there I go to the bathroom on the
01:47side of the house where it's private she has a hard time walking and for her to try to climb over a
01:52mountain obviously you're gonna have an accident if you can't make it that's why I get those pads
02:01and wear them my name is Keith and I am Janet's second son my mom feels comfortable in the mess
02:12that she lives in if my sister wasn't driving this force my mom would live like this the rest of her
02:20life if my mom refused to clean up the house I would absolutely have no choice but to call protective
02:30services good morning everyone good morning we are all here today to help Janet who's facing a pretty
02:46serious crisis my name is Corey Chalmers and I'm an extreme hoarding cleanup specialist Janet is an
02:52extreme hoarder she's living in absolute squalor I've actually seen homeless people live a cleaner
02:57lifestyle than her nobody ever came to my house I'm used to having the house to myself well did no
03:04one come to your house or did you not let anyone in your house I don't let anybody get that's what I
03:09thought that's what after today you're gonna have people in your house I haven't been to my mother's
03:15house since 1994 it's been about five years since I've been in the house
03:27below the top layer I mean everything was just filthy I mean we found stuff dating back to 1993
03:32last two feet was almost like wood pulp brick as you got closer to that chair the thing has got a
03:42little bit denser and it got a little bit stickier I'm getting more and more pissed when I'm in there
03:48we could have six more people in there easy just pick another spot and just start digging down to the
03:52floor ah it stinks my brothers and sisters are losers for not coming out and contributing to
03:59this I don't know if we can do this in two days it's uh it's terrible in there I would say the five
04:09trucks that we took to the dump probably weighed a total of about 7500 to 10,000 pounds
04:22hey what are you doing here Mary my name is dr. Robin Zazio I'm a licensed clinical psychologist and
04:31I specialize in OCD and compulsive hoarding Beth mentioned that there was a split in the family
04:37what are you doing here you're not welcome here in walks her twin sister Mary and it was on where are
04:45you for your mother where have you been for your mother you rotten pieces I didn't come to clean
04:53then why are you here cuz I'm glad I'm glad mom's getting help you could care less I don't want her
05:01here she has never been here for my mother you're only here because you want to fix this house up
05:09cuz mom's leaving it to you okay and you want the money you're only for mom for the money about okay
05:14you have no when Mary walked into the house with the dog in her hands I knew she was here just for
05:22show I don't say a word you can attack me I can't hang on hang on the one thing that I want to say
05:27that I don't think you're aware of is that this house was hoarded up to here in trash your mom has no
05:35heat she has no water hang on I understand that I'm not blaming you how you doing Janet it can't be
05:45helped they did they always thought like this she she fights with everybody married us because I
05:54wanted to say a prayer for mom oh yes okay we'll make our point all right it's been four days I know
06:04that we have had help she wants to come on day four at the very last minute to go hi look at me
06:10don't you think I'm pretty we all know that mom I do love you you know I do okay listen I understand
06:18what you're saying everybody sees it when was the last time you visited your mom here probably about
06:27three four years ago my dad has begged her and begged her and said let me send people in to do it and she's
06:32refused every time then you come over here and you throw it away for her drop this I don't want to
06:37drop it I want you to live a healthy lifestyle yeah I know but this one doesn't know how to tell the
06:43truth Mary is just like her dad she lies most of the time are you gonna tell them how you locked us all in
06:53the basement yeah yeah Mary that's right Mary that's right you know this is one of the most
07:02dysfunctional families that I've worked with how can I be saying that to you amongst themselves they
07:08just can't get along for two seconds okay I think I think that's a good idea there's been so many
07:27different stories told I don't know where the truth lies wow we got to get Janet out here hey Janet
07:53what I would like to do is throw away all this food whether it's expired or not because it's out
07:59here and it's been in this gross garage it is not gross and listen this is common sense stuff this is
08:05expired food that's over common sense to a degree Janet has a hard time letting go of food even if it's
08:13expired has mouse droppings on it it's filthy gross she wants to keep it I can't let you keep all this
08:18food that is literally sitting on the floor in here where rodents are running around can we just close the
08:22door on it just throw everything away no we're not throwing everything away mom we're throwing away
08:28the food it's gonna be sanitary it is not unsanitary we're gonna feel much better about this later okay
08:37all brain no I'm never gonna feel better about wasting stuff go ahead
08:52we have all the stuff out but it's still not habitable myself and Cory cannot sign this off
09:03until we have confirmation that she will not be returned to this house until there is running water
09:10heat a bed much more than that doctor at this point I'm not going to call APS on my mom she's gonna come
09:19and stay with me and she'll be over here with me every day it's gonna take me about a week to paint
09:23the walls and do the repairs in the walls that need to be done now it's a house but in a couple weeks it
09:29will be a home if you come back in six months this place is not gonna be full despite how serious this
09:42horde was we made a lot of progress with the interference from the family Janet slowing us
09:45down just a little bit here and there we were able to get the whole house pretty much cleaned of all the
09:49clutter thank goodness for the children showing up they pitched in both days and did a lot of work I
09:55feel good about coming out here and doing a lot of work but it was two days and it doesn't make up for 17
10:03years I owe my mother a lot more than this my name is Penny and I
10:24I'm 44 years old and I work for the federal government
10:38I have two sons Patrick is 13 and Thomas is three my house sucks
10:48it's embarrassing it's shameful it's ridiculous it's
10:54irrational illogical
10:57disgusting and gross and on the verge of being uninhabitable
11:06I am Patrick I'm 13 and Penny is my mom
11:15my dad left I mean that makes me mad but if he doesn't want a man up and live there
11:23I got a man up our house right now it looks horrible something happened with our electricity where we
11:33lost the electricity upstairs and in the kitchen well the kitchen's obviously unusable with two
11:43refrigerators that don't work I'm scared that if we try to get an electrician in here they're gonna see
11:50see how bad it is and they're gonna call protective services I know if I came into a house like this I
11:56would feel a moral obligation to turn somebody in me and my baby brother probably will get taken away and I just
12:08can't handle that I don't want that to happen and so nobody's allowed in the house
12:15my name is Pete and I'm 42 years old and I'm Penny's brother the last time I went over to the house I saw Thomas playing on the front porch in just a pile of junk it broke my heart
12:37it broke my heart I can't imagine what it's like for those those two kids it rips me up inside
12:44what's the basketball one that's my family my sister watch your step
12:53I'm Henry I'm Henry I'm Penny's father
12:59Penny's home has become progressively worse
13:05I do own the home it is a challenging situation it's overwhelming
13:11I haven't known where to start I don't think she has known where to start
13:17what all started our clutter in the house is when her mom died which was two years before I was
13:27born Penny's mother died somewhat unexpectedly she had a couple weeks in the hospital she had a week at
13:34home she had another week back in the hospital and then it was all over it was extremely traumatic for
13:41me when she died at the age of 54 I don't recall serious clutter problems before her mother died
13:51I tried to hang on for as long as I could and the depression just got the best me and I just gave up
14:00things are just spiraled downhill I did love my mother she'd be beating herself up she'd be like oh my god
14:14it's all my fault no she would hate this
14:17my name is Margaret I am Henry's wife I have tried very very hard to respect Henry and the fact that
14:35this is his daughter but Thomas and Patrick living in the environment to me is distressing the living
14:44conditions are not very good for their safety and their welfare particularly little Thomas right
14:56now me and Thomas are sleeping on the sofa I sleep on one end and he sleeps on the other
15:01it kills me that my grandson Thomas does not have a bed
15:11good morning everybody good morning I'm Jerilyn Thomas I'm a certified professional organizer
15:28specializing in chronic disorganization we are going to get your house in order to whatever degree
15:35you determine is the right fit for you penny penny is going to be a complicated person to work with
15:41she seems to be nonchalant and angry and has some trust issues our job is just to go at whatever pace
15:50you're most comfortable we will not discard anything that you don't want discarded and we're here to be
15:57respectful okay let's go ahead and get started with penny I know that she is experiencing a lot of anxiety I want you I want you to talk to that I want to do I want to do it okay
16:16she's expecting a lot of negative out of this which it's going to be a little bit tougher to deal with
16:27I want that toaster and it's just been stepped on like three times I would have moved it if you all would
16:42let me it just sucks that it's here to even be stepped on I'm Dr. Suzanne Chabot I'm a specialist in OCD and hoarding
16:50do you feel like you think you're being disrespected no just well I don't know I don't know
16:57she is losing more and more control when she loses that control she gets anxious and when she gets anxious she gets mad
17:12the only reason I still have this doll left is because my brother gave it to somebody that had
17:26the decency to give it back to me after everything got thrown out at my mom's house this is one of the
17:32only things I have left and I specifically said that this doll was very very precious once somebody feels
17:40that they've been betrayed and all of their things were taken out from under them and thrown away you
17:47really have a hard time letting somebody in and trusting them this is obviously not a boy's toy this
17:55is an heirloom why are you throwing it in a box with toys because if it went in a box with toys what could
18:02happen well for starters it shouldn't even be handled that much you're doing so good you asked me if I
18:10want my kids report card and then you don't ask me if I want my mother's heirloom doll that she got
18:17from her mother I don't get that I don't understand
18:23I'm trying to get as much as this out of the way before she uh coming back downstairs I like these I
18:42like these and I like these too just so there's no oh I want that or I needed that don't throw that
18:48out you know that kind of thing oh no no no all the teachers and stuff were supposed to be left out
19:04for Patrick the minute you walked away everybody started throwing everything away I had to come
19:11running back and tell them to stop okay so you feel like this is a big a lot of trust gone out the
19:16window well you did say nothing will go if I don't have the say so and I didn't have the say so so I
19:24feel like that isn't the truth okay I feel like I was told an untruth
19:30I don't remember seeing this I didn't see this bag going
19:40this army stuff we didn't see that
19:44I do too
19:54I do too
19:58the family's feeling really vulnerable they're feeling taken advantage of they feel like we're
20:04trying to sensationalize what's going on here honestly makes me think you do it to test us
20:09I I have no testing agenda so I'm paranoid as can be and that's my paranoia coming out things got
20:23put on the truck that she did not approve that Patrick did not go through they were put up there
20:28accidentally and since she has trust issues anyway it just set us way back if you were giving us a test
20:35grade what would we make I say an F an F okay so tomorrow we can only go up right all right I
20:44an F gives me a lot of room to improve a lot of room to improve I'm gonna aim higher tomorrow okay
20:53we all are penny yes time for you to start making decisions yes it's freezing out here so the sooner
21:07the better the better okay let this go this go and that go and the sink what is this does anybody I
21:17almost don't want to open I'm scared to open it and you're scared because you'll want to keep it no
21:24because it might be icky nasty I don't know what it is and it's a wreath yep I'm keeping Reese okay
21:31hoses broke in a million different ways can go the horse can go it's possible that we would have seen
21:40a lot more anxiety over the discarding hit she tried to do that in private so that can all go okay
21:48having other people expect something from her actually helps her get rid of things yeah let
21:56these go and then please I'm feeling really good about all the stuff we got rid of I mean we got
22:04rid of four and a half trucks that's a lot of stuff
22:06getting things accomplished feels wonderful it's very empowering it helps a little bit you know with
22:22your self-confidence oh oh we think it's wonderful my hope is that this continues and everything's
22:34maintained well I'd say right now in my in my opinion is probably about a 50 50 chance if Penny
22:42doesn't change her weekend activities nothing has changed this was all for naught I know they love
22:48shopping and I know they love yard sailing but they have to find a different family activity if that
22:53continues her house will look exactly like it did when we arrived okay one two three
23:04who's bed is that Thomas you want to hop up there and see how it feels when we came in our attention
23:17was not only on helping her but establishing a healthy home environment for her children we have
23:25accomplished that goal is a clean safe environment for her children I still need help from the
23:34experts but I'll eventually get there I think
23:37I'm Mary from Michigan
24:05trying to tell myself I'm a collector but quite frankly in definition I'm a hoarder
24:14one room was my office now it is a depository for items a lot of items
24:24then I have another room that I slept in for quite a while but I now have that as a closet it's jammed and
24:35packed can't even get into it in fact and then I have what I call my larger room
24:42it also is a depository for other items one time I had a large kitchen what I thought was somewhat large
24:55now it's very small because I've had to put items in there to hold other items too many pots too many pans too many knives very limited cupboard space so I have very few dishes and all my dishes I use are out I can't entertain because I can't I can't have enough in there to entertain with
25:25it's not a lot of them I can't have enough in there to be a lot of items I have lots of boxes and boxes and boxes are filled with lots of clothes and other items it's just jammed with a lot of stuff in fact too much stuff
25:39and I'll have to admit I have stopped because I spy something on the side of the road and I think I could use that
25:54have I ever used it I'm not quite sure some of the items I've picked up
26:00when I go into a store into let's say a retail clothing store if the price is right and it fits
26:10I can't say no I'd walk out with their eight pairs of shoes would I wear those shoes maybe one pair maybe two do I still have those shoes I hate to admit it yes I do I just don't know how to get rid of things if I had known how to get rid of things I would have it's so easy to bring things in and so hard to take things out
26:34I'm Gary I'm Mary's close friend for over 30 years I've always said Mary is a hoarder absolutely she likes deals she likes anything she thinks or perceives has a sense of value like if she found a soccer ball on sale and it was a great deal she would buy six of them
27:04as opposed to buying one she has no use for a soccer ball she just likes items I'm Ed and I'm Mary's youngest brother my name is Rick and my sister is Mary Mary gets a lot of comfort from the items that she has those things defined her it was her her possessions tried to talk to her a lot of times about
27:34it's just they're just they're just things they're they're not important you know you can always replace those but hopefully she's come to that realization that that she doesn't really need them that there are other things that are that are more important
27:47I've always been a physical person I need both knees replaced I need a shoulder replaced I'm kind of falling apart physically
28:08I don't understand why all these things are happening to me and I I with all that going on I look at my life and I say I can't stay like this
28:30I need to find more than just a path from room to room I want to be able to live in my rooms
28:39and I'm tired of what's in there is taking my life breath away
28:46how do I make myself separate from emotion and logic I don't know I'm gonna find out and that's why I'm asking for help because I know I need it
29:07Hi Mary hello yes it's Mary I am Dr. Donora Nieves how are you well what a pleasure my name is Donora Nieves and I'm a behavioral scientist
29:22Mary's very very warm very welcoming and very sweet and I think all of that is going to help us to build a connection and a trust and a rapport with her
29:33and hopefully get her to a place where she feels comfortable letting us help her
29:37Hi
29:42Hi Dr. D
29:43Hi I'm Dorothy so Dorothy this is Mary
29:46I've been waiting
29:47My name is Dorothy Brenninger and I'm a professional organizing expert and I specialize in hoarding
29:55My plan of attack is to start soft and slow
29:59Fewer people to get started on day one so that it doesn't feel so incredibly invasive
30:06Normally I would start out with maybe 10-15 of us to get rolling on day one
30:12We're gonna go smaller because this is not one of those shovel and toss
30:19Right
30:19Okay
30:20Thank you
30:20This is one of those where we have to be delicate so when there's good stuff coming out
30:24Initially I'd like to see how soft we can be with this stuff
30:28Okay
30:29Welcome everybody good morning
30:33Good morning
30:34Hi
30:34Wow we have a bunch of people here we need to get to know each other right
30:38So first of all Mary I know you for sure
30:41And we've got brother Rick yeah Eddie Dr. D
30:45Gary you're a friend yes
30:48Yes
30:48I've got my boss organizers and there we are Sherry and Tammy friends neighbors perfect
30:56So let's make this happen
30:59All right you call it let's do it
31:01Okay
31:01Okay out we go
31:02Donate or toss
31:08Donate
31:09Donate
31:10Keep
31:10Donate
31:11Keep
31:13And this
31:15That's a keep
31:15Donate
31:16Good
31:17The art of motorcycle maintenance keep it
31:20You have a motorcycle
31:21Cadillac
31:23I'd like to keep that believe it or not
31:26Stop Rick
31:28I gotta push you
31:29I know but
31:30Oh gosh that's from the old ski ball
31:32And I have it down in the basement
31:34This is a keep
31:36All right
31:36For right now let's keep it for right now
31:40A lot of keeping isn't it
31:42Okay I'm coming in for a statistical report
31:45Throw away
31:46How's it going Rick I'm getting a thumbs down
31:49Mary
31:50How do you rate yourself here
31:52A little bit
31:54Zero to ten
31:55Zero is no good
31:56Ten is like stellar
31:57I'm like I'm about a four right now
31:59She's at a four
32:00What do you think
32:01Eddie
32:01Yeah
32:01Okay so is there a room for improvement as you see it at this point
32:06I'm not here to push you at this moment
32:09Possibly
32:09This is just entryway
32:10Yeah possibly
32:11Okay are your brothers pushing you at all in a way that is offensive or not enough
32:17I'm in her ear and I'm pushing her
32:20Okay
32:21Yeah
32:21What do you need
32:22I need to review everything again and I just and take a look and see because I need to
32:28I need still need to shed and I know that
32:30Just can everybody just not talk so loud that's all I don't want
32:34That was me
32:34I'm just I'm just getting I'm getting a high
32:37I just I don't know
32:38You know and I
32:39God you're just incredible don't worry about it
32:42We may get into a little battle here and there
32:44My sister and I
32:45But I think that's probably okay
32:48That we do have a little bit of friction
32:51And that's what happens with families you know
32:53All families have that
32:55You're not going to be able to go through everything
33:06It looks like all junk
33:08But only you know I mean
33:10Like you can't keep a bungee cord
33:14I've just gone through it okay
33:16And please I've just gone through it
33:18This is not garbage
33:20It's set up on June 20th
33:22This is when my mother passed that day
33:24I was using it
33:25You click it
33:26Oh wow
33:27It gives the dates
33:28And my cat
33:29I
33:29Can I please keep this
33:32Yeah absolutely
33:33Absolutely
33:35I'll put it with your special items okay
33:37I know what that is
33:38It's my Ilford towel
33:39I know
33:39I know
33:40It's a keeper
33:41No
33:41I don't have one
33:42Oh come on
33:43It's a towel
33:44It's my Ilford towel
33:45It's a towel
33:46For 20 years with this company
33:47Gary please
33:48Oh come on
33:49Garbage
33:49Garbage
33:50It's a keeper
33:50No it's not
33:51It's a garbage
33:52It is not garbage
33:53It's a towel
33:54I'm going to use it
33:55While I was milling around
34:02Heard you holding on to some stuff that people were inviting you to let go of
34:07And going through the minutia
34:10And you know what that is?
34:12That's a control tactic
34:14You're fighting for the power
34:17You're fighting for the control
34:19Because it has kept you safe
34:22I want you to trust that even when you're not in control
34:25Things can still work out in your favor
34:29Things can still work out in your favor even if you're not controlling them
34:33Take a breath
34:34Okay
34:35Let some other people make some decisions
34:37Okay
34:49You're still arguing with me about whether I should keep what I consider to be
34:57You consider everything though
34:58Everything is like a treasure
35:01Please Lord help me through this
35:03You can't keep everything
35:05Walk with me please
35:06Don't take me too far
35:08Okay I'll just take you where I can
35:10I know but I want privacy
35:12Will it make everybody happy if I just let them throw everything away?
35:18Stop
35:18Then let's do it
35:19Wait wait wait
35:20Let's do it
35:21We're not going to do that because then what you'll do is pin it on making us happy
35:25This is not about making us happy
35:26I'm not going to make
35:27I'm not going to pin it on anybody
35:29Listen to me
35:29I know what I need to do
35:30I just don't know how to do it
35:32Okay but we're going to help you
35:33But here's what I want you to hear
35:35You got to let people help you
35:38I am trying but
35:40You're trying but you lash out
35:42And you fight back
35:44And I hear you
35:45I know I do
35:46Why wouldn't I?
35:48But then just take a breath
35:50No one wants to fight you to help you
35:55So if you sincerely want help
35:58You have to make it welcoming for people to help you
36:02I'm in pain
36:03Okay I'm going to take that as a strong advice
36:05Okay
36:06I will
36:06Let's see how that works
36:07I will take it as strong advice
36:08Okay
36:09All right
36:15Good morning everybody
36:16Good morning
36:17Yes yes it is a good morning
36:19And we have a bigger team today

36:28And we try to make this happen
36:31Let's go
36:31Yes
36:3220%
36:33Let's play ball
36:34These are all my slides and everything
36:44Those are not going into the dumpster
36:46You'll never look at them
36:48You'll never look at them
36:49It doesn't matter
36:50I know but you'll never look at them
36:52Nobody will ever
36:53I'm going to scan them
36:55Okay
36:55Please let me try to think to do that
36:58Okay
36:58Nobody wants to see them
36:59And you don't want to see them
37:00No
37:01So I want them to be gone
37:03Put them in there
37:06You won't do as we use them
37:07This goes on for my tree
37:09You guys
37:10This is the stuff that you took off of the piano
37:14I have to keep my system
37:16What about those trays
37:17What do you want those trays for?
37:20No
37:20I collect them
37:21So we're down to 80%
37:29We've cleared
37:31Nearly half of the basement down there
37:36But look what's happened
37:37This is the driveway
37:39Everything from here is now here
37:42And notice over here
37:44This is the front lawn
37:45You know it's just been removed from the green spots
37:49But you've got more black spots
37:50Do you get what I'm saying?
37:52Yep
37:52You've got to be all in
37:53Or none at all
37:55I know that you granted us permission earlier
37:58And I know you're trying to avoid
38:00Having a conversation
38:01Because you're over there
38:02Mayor I need you to come back
38:05Throw it all out
38:06Throw it
38:07I can't deal with it
38:09I don't know how to handle this
38:11Okay
38:12I really just don't know how to handle this
38:14So I'll find a way though
38:16Okay

38:52What concerns me the most
38:56Going into tomorrow morning
38:57Is whether or not
38:59Mary will let Rick
39:00Or even Eddie
39:02Sort and make decisions on her behalf
39:04Because at the end of today
39:06I'll tell you what
39:07She was not happy with Rick
39:10It should have been found
39:11And it wasn't
39:12Because it wasn't reviewed
39:13With
39:14It just wasn't
39:16Okay

39:25I didn't sleep last night
39:27I pounded myself in the head
39:28I want it back
39:29It's the one
39:30The dress
39:31Screw the dress
39:32The table
39:33Is so meaningful to me
