US Senate passage of Trump's tax bill to 'haunt Republicans for years to come'

The Republican-controlled US Senate passed President Donald Trump's tax and spending bill on Tuesday, July 1, signing off on a massive package that would enshrine many of his top domestic priorities into law while adding $3.3 trillion to the national debt.

The bill now heads back to the House of Representatives for final approval. The US House of Representatives set debate and a vote for Wednesday.

Trump has pushed lawmakers to get it to his desk to sign into law by the July 4 Independence Day holiday.

Democratic Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Tuesday blasted the Republican Senators for voting to pass Trump's sweeping bill.

00:00Good afternoon. Today, Senate Republicans betray the American people and cover the Senate in utter shame.
00:10In one fell swoop, Republicans passed the biggest tax break for billionaires ever seen,
00:17paid for by ripping away health care for millions of people and taking food out of the mouths of hungry kids.
00:26This is not a big, beautiful bill at all. That's why I moved on the floor to strike the title.
00:35It is now called The Act. That's all it's called.
00:39But it is really the big, ugly betrayal, and the American people know it.
00:46This vote will haunt our Republican colleagues for years to come.
00:50Because of this bill, tens of millions will lose health insurance.
00:54Millions of jobs will disappear. People will get sick and die.
01:01Kids will go hungry, and the debt will explode to levels we have never seen.
01:07All so that the billionaires and corporate special interests get a permanent tax break.
01:13This bill is so irredeemable that one Republican literally chose to retire rather than vote yes and decimate his own state.
01:23But there were many, many senators who felt like he did.
01:28They knew how bad it was for their states.
01:30But they didn't have the courage. They didn't have the backbone to vote with the people of their states.
01:36They voted in obeisance to Donald Trump and his billionaire buddies.
01:42Because, as one of the senators said, we are all afraid, speaking of the Republican senators.
01:50And let me say this.
01:52On the Republican side, when the bill passed, there was a bit of somberness that I don't think was expected.
02:01And that's because they knew, deep in their hearts, how bad this bill is for them, their states, and the Republican Party.
02:12They knew that following Trump would be a very, very bad move for the good of the country and for the Republican Party.
02:24Well, Tillis spoke truth to power.
02:27Unfortunately, not any other Republicans had the courage to do that.
02:31But obviously, what Tillis said is true.
02:35I'm urging every House Democrat to vote no.
02:38And I'm urging Republican House members.
02:41We have six in New York.
02:42This bill clobbers New York.
02:45If they vote for it, they're betraying New York.
02:50Thank you, everybody.
03:01We'll see you next time.
