00:00Cops in Ohio spotted a young man shoplifting.
00:17After hearing his story, they teach him a lesson he won't forget.
00:21We have an undercover detective that spotted you steal from Walgreens, so you're being
00:33detained pending further investigation of theft.
00:36We'll clear everything out real quick, I just want to make sure we're all good, okay?
00:39It's not related to here.
00:42If it all ends up being fake or whatever, we'll take care of it.
00:46I'm pretty sure I know it.
00:48Okay.
00:49Hey man, you're doing great, alright?
00:52Don't, look, he's a good friend of mine.
00:54Don't make me go over there and pull this in.
00:56Did you go in?
00:57No, sir.
00:58Where do you live at?
00:59Uh, I live.
01:00Sit back down, sir.
01:01Let's see that.
01:02Where do you live?
01:03I live on the north side.
01:05How do you get over here?
01:06Uh, I forgot.
01:08From where?
01:09School.
01:10So you live on the north side?
01:11Yeah.
01:12Where do you actually live, I mean?
01:13The north side, I promise.
01:14Like, what's the address?
01:15Oh, yeah.
01:16The street at least.
01:17The north side.
01:18It's, I just load up everything.
01:20I'll have months.
01:21You like a main road that brings you to there?
01:24Like, how do you get to there?
01:26Uh, it's Main Street.
01:27Main Street?
01:28Oh, okay.
01:29Yeah.
01:30Why are you gonna tell me you only took one back?
01:32No, those I paid for.
01:33What?
01:34Those.
01:35You paid for these?
01:36Yes.
01:37Yes.
01:38I'm sorry.
01:39Initially, the young man tries to lie to officers about what he's taken, but he quickly realizes
02:05he's going to need to take responsibility for his actions.
02:08Well, let me buckle you up, because we're going to get you over there, okay?
02:11I'm so sorry.
02:12I just didn't.
02:13It wasn't a great one.
02:16Yeah.
02:17Hi there.
02:18Hi.
02:19Obviously, he came in.
02:20He's off duty, but he saw him steal some stuff, called it out to us.
02:23Okay.
02:24Um, we got him.
02:25He's 16 years old.
02:26He's in the back of our cruiser.
02:27It's up to you guys if you want to press charges, trespass him, whatever.
02:29As far as we know, that's all he stole.
02:30Is he a Belmont kid?
02:31Yeah.
02:32He's like 6'4", looks relatively respectable.
02:35Yeah, we kicked him out the other day.
02:36Okay.
02:37Um, I was told by her that one of my other co-workers, he kicked him out the other day
02:42because he was stealing his lo.
02:44Okay.
02:45So this is occurrence number two?
02:46Yeah.
02:47We had a lot of Belmont kids come in here, but I'm going to have to call my store manager
02:51to see what she wants to do.
02:52Yeah, by all means.
02:53What's up?
02:54No, I'll just send out our podcast.
02:56Hey man, I'm not saying what you did today wasn't a bad thing.
02:59Yeah.
03:00But all things to say, you really do seem like a good kid.
03:02Yeah, I know.
03:03You're cooperating.
03:04You're speaking well.
03:05You're being remorseful.
03:06I know.
03:07I just made a bad decision.
03:08I just got out of practice.
03:09I was hungry.
03:10My bus don't come until, like, a little bit.
03:14Yeah, I just made a bad decision.
03:16Well, regardless of how the rest of this goes, let's make this a learning moment.
03:21Let's make this a coming to Jesus moment and not doing this again, okay?
03:24Sure.
03:25Officers believe the young man is truly remorseful for his actions and are willing to release
03:30him.
03:31However, his future is in the hands of the local store manager.
03:34Officers stand by, waiting to hear if they wish to press charges.
03:38I mean, all things considered, yeah, like I told him what he did was wrong, but he really
03:42does seem like a decent enough kid compared to the ones we're chasing out of Hyandes and
03:47stuff.
03:48Like, he's been super cooperative, well-spoken, hasn't put up any type of an argument.
03:54Like, he's owned all of it.
03:57Super remorseful, so.
03:58I'm thinking that might be it.
04:02Doesn't he give you any trouble at that restaurant?
04:04No, he's been super cooperative, super remorseful.
04:07He is.
04:08That's what I was just saying to banks.
04:09All things together, he does look like that.
04:11That's all.
04:12I don't want to stop him.
04:13He's got that out of his mouth.
04:15At least that way, we're at least going to get the cuffs off.
04:17Come here.
04:22Since we're not the ones that are reporting there, we're not going to press charges.
04:25Okay.
04:26She said just, if you want to, let him know that we've seen him in here before.
04:29Okay.
04:30Do you want him trespassed?
04:31That would mean that if he comes back, it doesn't mean he's going to jail, it doesn't
04:34mean he's in trouble right now.
04:35It just means, if he comes back and you guys call it in, he'll go to jail for the trespass.
04:38No, I wouldn't worry about it.
04:40Okay.
04:41I wouldn't know that.
04:42No, he is.
04:43That's all.
04:44Okay.
04:47It's this young man's lucky day.
04:48Hopefully, this close brush with the law is enough to set him straight.
04:51Officers clearly want the best future for this young man, and what they do next might surprise
04:56you.
04:59She said, I'll call my boss.
05:01He called the boss.
05:02He said, okay, we don't want him to go to jail because we didn't report it.
05:05And I was like, you want to trespass?
05:06It just means he can't come back and he does it as a charge.
05:08She said, I don't even want to do that.
05:09Just let him know he can't come back.
05:10Do me a favor.
05:11Go grab all the stuff and-
05:12I don't know where- whatever it is.
05:15Where's all the stuff at that he took?
05:17Sorry, I already put it back on-
05:19No, you're good.
05:20We're just going to buy it for him.
05:21Oh, it's in my hair.
05:22That looks.
05:23It's dirty.
05:24Go check you out a drink or something.
05:25Alright, I'm going to buy that for him.
05:26Not even thirsty?
05:27No, not even sure.
05:28It's not even thirsty.
05:29It's so happen every day.
05:30It's a little bit embarrassed.
05:31Don't be embarrassed.
05:32Learn from it.
05:33Be embarrassed.
05:34Yeah, learn from it.
05:35This is jailable.
05:36You can be going straight to JPC right now.
05:37I do not.
05:39Thank you, thank you.
05:55Officer's give the young man some snacks.
