00:00:30The End
00:01:00This is the port of New York.
00:01:16To the traveler, it's a familiar, ever-impressive skyline.
00:01:20To the newcomer, it's a symbol of hope.
00:01:23To the merchant, it's the biggest, busiest seaport in the world.
00:01:27But to others, it's a battleground.
00:01:30And a battle is constantly waged against illicit traffic in contraband
00:01:34and against the unknown forces who deal in the most dangerous of all contraband, narcotics.
00:01:41On the front line in this battle is the Bureau of Customs of the United States Treasury Department.
00:01:47Part of its job is to check every piece of incoming baggage
00:01:50to see that no contraband is smuggled through.
00:01:53There are lots of tricks in the smuggling racket.
00:01:57The customs men are trained to know them all.
00:02:00The new ones, the old ones, and a few more.
00:02:04Yet despite the vigilance of these men,
00:02:06the flow of narcotics into the United States has never been completely checked.
00:02:11Government reports are full of case histories on the battle against illicit traffic in narcotics.
00:02:16One of the most dramatic was the one known simply as the Florentine case.
00:02:26The SS Florentine was approaching the port of New York on the night of June 22nd.
00:02:32She was a few miles out of the harbor.
00:02:35At 3.30 in the morning, one of the passengers appeared on B deck.
00:02:39Her name was Tony Cardell.
00:02:41Her name was Tony Cardell.

00:05:41THE FLORENTINE DOCKED AT 10 that morning. Soon after that, her gangplank was lowered and her 832 passengers began to disembark. Among them was Tony Cardell. Like all the other passengers, Tony Cardell went through customs inspection. Her baggage was examined. There was nothing irregular.
00:05:43morning. Soon after that, her gangplank was lowered, and her 832 passengers began to disembark.
00:05:51Among them was Tony Cardell. Like all the other passengers, Tony Cardell went through customs
00:05:58inspection. Her baggage was examined. There was nothing irregular in it. Her clearance was a
00:06:04matter of routine.
00:06:34I can't understand it, Paul. There was no reason to kill him. You told me the purser would be taken
00:06:41care of. You didn't say it would be with a knife in his back. Such a repulsive way of putting things
00:06:47down. I also say that you look slightly ridiculous. A woman should never indulge in floor pacing as an
00:06:53emotional outlet. She becomes a foolish spectacle. Now, my dear, sit down and relax. But murder wasn't
00:06:58in the plans, Paul. I never would have gone through with it. Why did you have to kill him?
00:07:04Could Harley let him run loose in New York? It would have been only a question of time before they picked
00:07:08him up. A very bad risk.
00:07:10But I'm frightened, Paul. I never thought I'd be mixed up in a murder.
00:07:15But you are now, you know. And what do you wish me to do about it?
00:07:19Take me away, Paul. To Rio, like we planned, or someplace. Anyplace, just for a while, till this
00:07:25quiets down.
00:07:27That, my dear, is quite impossible.
00:07:30Paul, what's happened? You're not yourself.
00:07:34What is it? What's wrong?
00:07:39Darling, don't treat me like this. I've done what you wanted. Why are you acting like this?
00:07:45Please, darling. You must not become a nuisance.
00:07:48All right, Paul. If you won't take me, give me the money. I'll need at least $25,000.
00:07:59Are you certain that'll be quite enough?
00:08:04You can never miss it. Florentine Shipman is worth 50 times that.
00:08:09Eventually, yes. It'll be some time before I sell it.
00:08:12But I can't wait. I've got to get away now. I was seen talking to that purser. I danced with him. I had to. They're bound to find out and question me. I'm so frightened I might give the wrong answers.
00:08:25Yes. Yes. That's true. I might give the wrong answers.
00:08:32Who's that?
00:08:33No one to alarm you, my dear.
00:08:34I, uh, I put the stuff in Penn Station. It'll be picked up tonight.
00:08:44All right. Wait in the other room.
00:08:46Here's the, uh, $25,000. Staffs are collected from Carnage.
00:08:49That's all for the moment, Lenny.
00:08:57I thought you said you weren't selling it.
00:09:00This is special. I'm going to Canada. Eat cash.
00:09:02So do I, Paul.
00:09:04I'm unable to give you any more money, Tony.
00:09:07This hysterical attitude of yours I do not care for at all.
00:09:11You found someone else while I was away, didn't you, Paul?
00:09:14Who is she this time?
00:09:15Some little waitress?
00:09:18Cigarette girl?
00:09:19Kid out of the gutter?
00:09:20You're also developing the irritating habit of not minding your own business.
00:09:26I'm beginning to see you now, Paul.
00:09:28This little whim of yours for building up a poor girl from nothing.
00:09:31It's purely for the pleasure you get out of throwing her back into the trash barrel.
00:09:36You annoy me exceedingly.
00:09:38Please go.
00:09:41I'd give anything to be around to watch your smug, arrogant splatter all over the place.
00:09:46The day they finally lock you in a jail cell.
00:09:48Shortly after all her passengers had been discharged, the Florentine's cargo was unloaded.
00:10:14One of the items was a legitimate shipment of raw narcotics consigned to the Dale Chemical Company of New Jersey for processing for medical use.
00:10:23It was a bonded shipment and would have remained unopened in customs for several weeks had an alert inspector not found a discrepancy between the actual weight and the declared weight of the shipment.
00:10:36The inspector immediately ordered the box to be opened, and instead of the consignment of narcotics vitally needed by hospitals and doctors, it was found to contain nothing but sand.
00:10:48The all-out alarm was sounded.
00:10:52The searching squad of the enforcement unit arrived immediately from customs headquarters, prepared to go over every inch of the vessel for the missing narcotic shipment.
00:11:02The inspector in charge conferred with the Florentine's captain.
00:11:05While the searching squad combed the entire ship, covering it from stem to stern, from keel to crow's nest.
00:11:13On learning that the ship's purser was missing, the inspector notified the supervising customs agent in charge.
00:11:20Within a matter of minutes, Agent Michael Waters was assigned to the case and on his way.
00:11:30Waters' first job was to gather all available information aboard the Florentine.
00:11:35Interviewing a ship's officer, he learned that the missing purser knew the combination of the vault where the narcotics were kept.
00:11:45Further suspicion was thrown on him when it was discovered his personal papers were gone.
00:11:50Upon learning that one of the Florentine's life rafts was missing, Agent Waters requested an immediate search of the harbor.
00:11:57Another arm of the Treasury Department went into action.
00:12:01The Coast Guard sent out its cutters.
00:12:05A tremendous area of the port and its approaches had to be covered before the search ended.
00:12:12With the indication that the stolen narcotic shipment had now reached the shores of the United States,
00:12:20the Florentine case took on added significance.
00:12:24And now still another branch of the United States Treasury threw its forces into the battle.
00:12:29The Florentine case became a joint operation of the Customs Bureau and the Bureau of Narcotics.
00:12:35I might have to bring a man from Washington.
00:12:40I have no top agent free to handle a case this size.
00:12:44Well, I may be out of line, sir, but, uh, what about Jim Flannery?
00:12:48Flannery just finished a couple of tough ones.
00:12:50Now I've put him on a desk job.
00:12:52Desk job?
00:12:54Somehow I can't see Jim Flannery sitting behind a desk.
00:12:57That's the only way I could get him to take a little rest.
00:13:00You two worked together before, didn't you?
00:13:02Yes, the, um, Exeter case about two years ago.
00:13:05We were a lucky combination on that one.
00:13:10Send in Jim Flannery.
00:13:12And Sam Harrison.
00:13:14You feel better now, Waters?
00:13:15Well, I don't mind admitting it, sir.
00:13:17Working with Flannery is a real education.
00:13:19Well, this is a rough one.
00:13:20I hope you can crack it.
00:13:22Wow, here's that Customs band.
00:13:24Good to see you again, Mickey.
00:13:25Hi, Jim.
00:13:25Long time no see.
00:13:26Where you been hiding?
00:13:27Under a desk.
00:13:28Paper job.
00:13:30Duty for me.
00:13:31What are you up to?
00:13:32Well, Jim, I'm switching assignments on you.
00:13:36You're going on a case.
00:13:37Thanks.
00:13:38The Florentine job?
00:13:40It's a big haul, Jim.
00:13:41I know.
00:13:42I've seen the reports.
00:13:43When they process that raw stuff,
00:13:45they'll have over a million dollars worth of dope to spread around.
00:13:48And as soon as they do that, Jim, we're sunk.
00:13:50We've got to grab that stuff before they start peddling it.
00:13:52But before we can grab it, we've got to find it.
00:13:54We've got a job in our hands, Mickey.
00:13:55Well, come in, Sam.
00:13:57Harrison will work with you.
00:13:58Good.
00:13:59Pleasure, Jim.
00:14:00You know Mickey Waters?
00:14:01Oh, sure.
00:14:02How are you, Mick?
00:14:02Hi, Sam.
00:14:03The Florentine case, Sam.
00:14:06Give them a rundown, Waters.
00:14:08Well, no leads except the missing purser.
00:14:11We're no wrecking on him.
00:14:13We're checking the passenger list and the crew now.
00:14:15So far, nothing there either.
00:14:16It doesn't give us much to go on.
00:14:18Except the missing purser.
00:14:19You find him and you're in business.
00:14:21Let's get out the local file and give it a shake.
00:14:24I don't think you can crack this one that easily, Jim.
00:14:26Neither do I, sir.
00:14:27But we might find out if the shipment's still in town and if anyone has a line on the purser.
00:14:33Okay, Jim.
00:14:34It's all yours.
00:14:35Good.
00:14:35Now, Sam, let's throw out the biggest dragnet we can.
00:14:38Pick up all informers and pushers.
00:14:40That should give us a lead on this purser.
00:14:42Jim.
00:14:42We're really starting from scratch on this one.
00:14:46Find a guy that looks like 10,000 other guys.
00:14:49Yeah.
00:14:50Yeah.
00:14:51But all we're sure of is one thing.
00:14:54He went that way.
00:14:55Find one man.
00:14:57Because the package this man took from the S.S. Florentine wasn't ordinary contraband.
00:15:02In that package was death.
00:15:05That's why a dragnet had to be thrown out over the entire city.
00:15:08In this package were the seeds of destruction.
00:15:13Bacteria to start a plague of violence and misery.
00:15:16Men would kill to get it.
00:15:18Men would die to keep it.
00:15:21And those who kept it would destroy themselves with it.
00:15:24That's why time was so important.
00:15:27This pestilence had to be stopped before it could spread.
00:15:30So the manhunt went on, relentlessly, day and night.
00:15:35Then, aboard a drift-collecting barge,
00:15:38the search ended.
00:15:41The search ended.
00:15:41The search ended.
00:15:42The search ended.
00:15:43The search ended.
00:15:44The search ended.
00:15:45The search ended.
00:15:46The search ended.
00:15:47The search ended.
00:15:48The search ended.
00:15:49The search ended.
00:15:50The search ended.
00:15:51The search ended.
00:15:52The search ended.
00:15:53The search ended.
00:15:54The search ended.
00:15:55The search ended.
00:15:56The search ended.
00:15:57The search ended.
00:15:58The search ended.
00:15:59The search ended.
00:16:00The search ended.
00:16:01The search ended.
00:16:02The search ended.
00:16:03The search ended.
00:16:04The search ended.
00:16:05The search ended.
00:16:06The search ended.
00:16:07The search ended.
00:16:08Here's the passenger list, Jim.
00:16:36Mr. Flannery, there's a woman on the phone who wants to speak to someone in charge of the Florentine case.
00:16:50Who is she?
00:16:51She wouldn't give her name. She's on two.
00:16:54Flannery speaking. I understand you wanted to talk to me.
00:16:59How much do you pay for information on narcotic cases?
00:17:03Well, that depends. What did you have in mind?
00:17:09It's about a shipment of sand.
00:17:13The government pays 25% of the legal value of the merchandise recovered. Why don't you come up to the office and...
00:17:25No, that's impossible. You meet me in half an hour on the elevated platform, Canal Street.
00:17:32I'm wearing a gray dress with white collar and cuffs, and a gray hat.
00:17:39Nice outfit.
00:17:41Gray dress, white collar.
00:17:45You're...
00:17:55Flannery, and you?
00:17:57That doesn't matter.
00:17:59You said you'd pay for information.
00:18:00That's why I'm here.
00:18:01You were going to tell me about the Florentine ship.
00:18:02Well, I can tell you where to find part of it. Then would I get the money right away?
00:18:06As soon as we have the evidence. You said, uh, part of the ship.
00:18:09Well, I...I don't know where the rest of it is.
00:18:13All right.
00:18:16You said, uh, part of the ship.
00:18:19Well, I can tell you where to find part of it.
00:18:23Then would I get the money right away?
00:18:26As soon as we have the evidence.
00:18:28You said, uh, part of the ship.
00:18:31Well, I... I don't know where the rest of it is.
00:18:35But I can help you there, too.
00:18:38That is, if you...
00:18:40We'll pay for anything we get.
00:18:42Where did you, uh, get your information?
00:18:45Someone I know is...
00:18:47That is...
00:18:49There's some people I know who are involved.
00:18:53If I could get the money right away,
00:18:55you said it wouldn't be long.
00:18:57It's up to you.
00:18:58Depends upon how soon we get the evidence.
00:19:00You'll get that tonight.
00:19:01Sometime tonight.
00:19:03Who is this, uh...
00:19:06Somebody you know?
00:19:11You'll have to tell us everything.
00:19:14About the rest of the shipment.
00:19:15Names, places.
00:19:16Everything you know.
00:19:17I...
00:19:19I'll have to get that.
00:19:21I need a little more time.
00:19:26I'll call you later.
00:19:27At your office.
00:19:29Later this afternoon.
00:19:30If you're afraid of anything, will you protect you?
00:19:32No.
00:19:33No, I'm not afraid.
00:19:35I'll call you later.
00:19:44There's some things.
00:19:45I'll call you.
00:19:46I'll call you later.
00:19:47Come on.
00:19:48You know what you are.
00:19:49Come on, woman, sir.
00:19:50Jimmy.
00:19:51Come on.
00:19:52Come on.
00:19:53Come on.
00:19:54Come on.
00:19:55Come on.
00:19:56Come on.
00:19:57Come on.
00:19:58Come on, sir.
00:19:59Come on.
00:20:00Come on.
00:20:02Oh, my God.
00:20:32Say, what's the name of the young lady that just came in here, do you know?
00:20:42No, aren't you ashamed of yourself?
00:20:45Young fella like you should be working, not loafing.
00:20:48Well, I tell you, Pop, I will be working as soon as I find out who she is.
00:20:52Now, look, it means a lot to me.
00:20:54Well, now, since you put it that way, her name is Toni Cardell, apartment 5A.
00:21:02When I was your age, I'd have found out for nothing.
00:21:04Let's go.
00:21:05Come on.
00:21:36You look so startled, Tony. As if you never expected to see me again.
00:21:56I didn't expect to. But I'm glad you've come, Paul. I've never needed you quite so much.
00:22:04And I didn't mean a word of what I said to you before. Really, I didn't.
00:22:09I'm terribly sorry for it.
00:22:11So am I.
00:22:13You do forgive me, don't you, darling?
00:22:15Tell me, Tony. Did you come straight home after you left my place?
00:22:19Yes. Certainly. Why?
00:22:23Oh, I was just worried that you might have stopped somewhere on the way here.
00:22:28You're not making sense, Paul.
00:22:31It takes ten minutes to get from my apartment to yours.
00:22:34I phoned for an hour and a half. You weren't home.
00:22:38Well, I... I stopped for my railroad ticket. At the station.
00:22:43And you lost the ticket on the way home.
00:22:53No, I... I didn't get it. I...
00:22:55You have been most ungrateful, Tony.
00:23:01Most ungrateful.
00:23:07I wish you were coming with me, Paul.
00:23:10Tell me, Tony.
00:23:13Where are you planning on going?
00:23:16The west coast. Then anywhere I can get.
00:23:21Come with me, Paul. Let's have it like it was before.
00:23:29Come with me, darling.
00:23:36I'm afraid I can't come with you, Tony.
00:23:41But I shall miss you.
00:23:44I'm so terribly worried, Paul.
00:23:51I don't know what to do.
00:23:53I'm worried too, Tony.
00:23:55Very worried about you.
00:23:57What do you mean?
00:23:59You're a frightened woman, Tony.
00:24:02Nervous. Lying.
00:24:04I'm not lying, Paul. I swear it.
00:24:06You're a bad risk, Tony.
00:24:08A very bad risk.
00:24:14I don't know what to do.
00:24:16You're a bad risk.
00:24:22I don't know what to do with you.

00:24:31What to do?
00:24:33I don't know what to do.
00:24:34That's the first shot.
00:24:35I don't know what to do.
00:24:36I don't know what to do.
00:24:38You are all about to do.
00:24:39No, you are all about to do.

00:33:16She doesn't know anything about it.
00:33:18We'll see.
00:33:19Who asked you to pick up the package?
00:33:20Him.
00:33:21The order says come here see a Dolly Carney.
00:33:23Dolly's him.
00:33:24He give me a key says get a package out of a locker at Penn.
00:33:27Was the girl in the room then?
00:33:29Nah.
00:33:30Only the character.
00:33:32What's in there?
00:33:33Stolen jewels.
00:33:34Sit down, Sonny.
00:33:35We'll send somebody back and pick you up.
00:33:37Dolly, don't stand for this.
00:33:38They can't push you around.
00:33:40Stay out of this, Lil.
00:33:41Look.
00:33:42She's not in this, believe me.
00:33:43believe me. I don't want to drag her into this. All right. We're not going to hold
00:33:47this long. Thanks. But we may want to talk to you tomorrow, so don't plan any
00:33:50trips. All right. Key to room 1017, car in that apartment's close. Do you live there,
00:33:55Carney? You guys are trying to frame me. I'm not in this business anymore. I was
00:33:59only doing a guy a favor. A guy I don't even know. You better get another story,
00:34:02Carney. This one sort of needs crutches. Come on, Carney. We'll have a little chat
00:34:06over at your place while we look it over. You guys got it all wrong. You got it all
00:34:10wrong. I was only doing a guy a favor. Let's go, Dolly. What's the matter, Dolly?
00:34:17Having trouble? Only get handled, Mac. Oh, yeah? I'm Joe Leone. This is my place. I don't
00:34:24like cops busting in here making pinches without warrants. You boys stick to your
00:34:28nitten and stay out of trouble. Are you going to move that or am I? You can't push me out
00:34:35like this. I got my right.
00:34:40Joey, how can we help him? What can we do? Oh, I don't know. I'm keeping out of this
00:34:48or I won't have any club left. We got to do something about it. Well, if you want to help
00:34:54him, he gave me a telephone number. Said he can call it. What are you doing to my stuff?
00:35:04Stop it, I say. Stop it. Stop it. I'll sue you. All right, Carney. Let's go back to the
00:35:09very beginning and start all over again. Two things we want to know. Who were you buying
00:35:15for and who did you buy it from? You got it all wrong. So help me. You got it all wrong.
00:35:22Go on. Put his right on it. Well, this is how it was. A guy came down from Canada. He wanted
00:35:32a big load of pure junk. Let's get the small details. What's the guy's name? All right.
00:35:40Why should I cover for the schnook? Name's Jerram's at the Chevy Chase Hotel. You're getting better.
00:35:46You have a cigarette. Go on, Carney. I'm interested.
00:35:53I told him I wasn't operating anymore. If I heard of anything, I'd let him know.
00:35:58And you heard of something? Just by accident. I happened to run into a guy I knew a long time ago.
00:36:05He told me he had 25 ounces of pure. And he wanted to sell for 25 Gs.
00:36:11What's this guy's name? I don't know. I don't know. So help me.
00:36:16A lot of petters, you never know their name. Where did you happen to run into them?
00:36:22Last Wednesday, Lil and I went to the... to the ball game.
00:36:27Somehow I don't see you at the ball game, Carney. Try again.
00:36:30I'm nuts about ball games. Are you?
00:36:34How about boat shows, Carney?
00:36:37Two tickets to the boat show. Grand Central Palace last Wednesday.
00:36:40That habit, Carney. Saving stubs.
00:36:42So what? So I went to the boat show. So what?
00:36:45So what? So you met your Mr. No Name there?
00:36:47Yeah.
00:36:48But why at the boat show?
00:36:50Because I wanted to buy myself a yacht.
00:36:53Noble ambition, Carney.
00:36:55All right, Carney. Move the lot.
00:36:57But getting back to this Mr. No Name, what does he look like?
00:37:00Like a lot of guys. Tall, thin, tall.
00:37:03Where can we find him?
00:37:05I don't know. I haven't seen him in years. Three, four years.
00:37:09I haven't. So help me.
00:37:10There's nothing else here, Jim. The place is clean.
00:37:14What is yet to last at my place for? I ought to sue you.
00:37:16Let's go downtown, Carney.
00:37:18Maybe you can remember your pal from the boat show on the way.
00:37:21How can I remember him? I never saw him. I tell you, I never saw him.
00:37:24I don't even know his name. Look, guys. The guy you want for Canuck, Jerrams.
00:37:28I'll be a witness against him. Anything you say...
00:37:30We'll pick him up, Dolly. But the guy we want most is your pal from the boat show.
00:37:34Maybe you can remember his name down in my office.
00:37:37Billy Long?
00:37:51Yes.
00:37:52I'm Stasser.
00:37:53I called because Joey said you could help.
00:37:55Maybe I can. How much do you know about this?
00:37:58Only what I told you on the phone. When the messenger came with the package, they followed him. Then they grabbed Dolly.
00:38:04That's all?
00:38:05That's all. We gotta get Dolly out. You said there was someone...
00:38:09There is.
00:38:10Have you seen him? Will he bail him out?
00:38:12I'll take you to him. Come along.
00:38:28Dad's son.
00:38:29I'll take you.
00:38:30Let's try again.
00:38:39Everybody.
00:38:41Good.
00:38:54ABET
00:38:58You brought her?
00:39:00She's out there.
00:39:01I don't like this.
00:39:02She's mixed up with Carney.
00:39:04I don't trust her.
00:39:05What are you suggesting to you?
00:39:06We don't know what Carney told her.
00:39:08She's dangerous.
00:39:09You will please allow me to make that decision.
00:39:28I'm Lily Long.
00:39:33Sorry to keep you waiting, Miss Long.
00:39:35That's all right.
00:39:36When I made that phone call, I didn't know about you.
00:39:39I didn't realize Dolly had friends like...
00:39:42like this.
00:39:44I understand you are quite close, you and Mr. Carney.
00:39:48No, he's just a good friend of mine.
00:39:50He got me my job at the club and...
00:39:52you will do something to help him, won't you?
00:39:55I shall certainly do everything in business.
00:39:58Let me pour you a drink while you tell me about yourself and...
00:40:02our good friend, Carney.
00:40:04Well, I...
00:40:05I wanted to help him because it wasn't Dolly's fault.
00:40:09You see, he was just trying to do somebody a favor.
00:40:12He was doing it for someone else.
00:40:14Someone else?
00:40:15If you could give me some idea who it might be.
00:40:18I only wish I knew.
00:40:21You have no idea.
00:40:23If we could get Dolly out of jail, I might be able to make him tell me.
00:40:30Won't you do something to help him?
00:40:32He can't stay in jail.
00:40:33He can't take it.
00:40:34He can't?
00:40:35No.
00:40:36He...
00:40:37Don't you see he's not strong?
00:40:39If they keep him there, he'll go to pieces.
00:40:42It would be a pity.
00:40:44Will you do something?
00:40:46Are you going to help him?
00:40:48Don't worry, my dear.
00:40:53Don't worry.
00:40:59Leo.
00:41:00Arrange for bail.
00:41:01We must get this Carney out as soon as possible.
00:41:04What about the girl?
00:41:05Harmless.
00:41:06Our concern is with your friend, Carney.
00:41:09Your choice of associates, Leo, is surprisingly poor.
00:41:12In future, for your own safety.
00:41:15I'd advise you to be more careful.
00:41:26Well, we're doing everything we can for your friend, Carney.
00:41:30Well, let's get out of here.
00:42:00We picked up the Canadian.
00:42:01He denies everything.
00:42:02He's lying.
00:42:03But we can't prove anything on him.
00:42:04That makes you the pigeon, Dolly.
00:42:05It's a tough wrap, Dolly.
00:42:06And it's a tough wrap, Dolly.
00:42:07And it's all yours.
00:42:08He's lying.
00:42:09I'm not going to take the wrap for anyone.
00:42:19Why should you, Dolly?
00:42:20We want the guy you got the size of.
00:42:22And it's all yours, along the way.
00:42:25And it's all yours.
00:42:26If you look at this man, I'll see you.
00:42:27Enough rap, Dolly.
00:42:30And it's all yours.
00:42:31He's lying.
00:42:32I'm not gonna take the rap for anyone.
00:42:34Why should you, Dolly?
00:42:36We want the guy you got the stuff from.
00:42:38Who is he, Dolly?
00:42:41You gotta let me out of here.
00:42:43I... I need... help.
00:42:50I gotta get out of here.
00:42:51You... you can't do this to me.
00:42:53We're not doing it. You are.
00:42:56We want the man at the head of this operation.
00:42:58If you happen to be in the way, it's too bad.
00:43:09We're waiting for you to give, Dolly.
00:43:27Thanks, Bob.
00:43:28I thought you told me.
00:43:29You will set me down modern wreck.
00:43:30We're waiting.
00:43:31You cannot see if there's no word wrong.
00:43:32But there's nothing wrong.
00:43:34I can tell you.
00:43:35No, no, no.
00:43:36But that timing is right.
00:43:37I can tell you.
00:43:38Which makes you so happy, Dolly!
00:43:39That and the way of England were defeated.
00:43:40All right?
00:43:41And I can tell you...
00:43:42I see...
00:43:43You!
00:43:44I'm burning up.
00:44:14It doesn't help.
00:44:29Say something.
00:44:32Say something.
00:44:34Will you?
00:44:36We've had our say, darling.
00:44:38The rest is up to you now.
00:44:44Stasic.
00:44:46What?
00:44:48Leo Stasic is what I got from.
00:44:52Where is this Stasic?
00:44:54He's got a bulwark's armor point.
00:45:02You've got to give me a break.
00:45:08You've got to take care of me.
00:45:10Sam, get the doctor.
00:45:12Take care of him.
00:45:16While we're waiting for the doc, go on with that story.
00:45:19Where's the boat place?
00:45:26Marine.
00:45:27Row.
00:45:29Half mile.
00:45:31Harbor.
00:45:32Point.
00:45:34That's no cheesecloth establishment.
00:45:50If that's a front, these boys operate on a large scale.
00:45:53Yeah, unless Connie pulled that Stasic character out of a hat.
00:45:56That's what we'd better find out and fast.
00:45:58Let's move in a little closer.
00:46:15Hey, Jim.
00:46:16Take a look at that sign.
00:46:18Looks like this tub is going to need a few quick repairs.
00:46:28Look.
00:46:29I run her in there.
00:46:30Stick around and work on her a while.
00:46:32Forget it, Mickey.
00:46:33It's not that simple.
00:46:34It's a cinch, Jim.
00:46:35That stuff's still in there.
00:46:36We've got to find out while it's still around.
00:46:38I can't let you risk in, Nick.
00:46:40You've never done any undercover work.
00:46:42I've learned a few tricks from the old professor.
00:46:46You better let me tackle this.
00:46:48Do you know anything about boats?
00:46:50Front from the rear.
00:46:53Yeah, you'd be great.
00:46:54Come on, I'll run you in.
00:46:56All right, Mickey.
00:47:26Let's go.

00:47:42Come on!
00:47:45Come on!
00:47:46Never even see what it was beautiful.
00:47:48Maybe you'll understand if you can."
00:47:49Come on.
00:47:50I'm in.
00:47:50Run!
00:47:51Come on.
00:47:52What's it going on now?
00:47:53...
00:47:54You got another one of those, pal?
00:48:15Yeah, catch.
00:48:19Thanks.
00:48:21After a high breath?
00:48:22That's the boss, Mr. Stasser.
00:48:27Stasser, eh?
00:48:52That's the boss.
00:48:54That's the boss.
00:48:55That's the boss.

00:49:32You lost, aren't you, fella?
00:49:43Oh, yeah, I guess I am.
00:49:45Just looking for the drinking fountain.
00:49:47Look again. It's outside and down below.
00:49:49Oh, thank you.
00:50:02He's good for an hour now.
00:51:14Hop in the shop in the supply room down below.
00:51:17That's as far as I got when laughing boy caught up with me.
00:51:37Okay.
00:52:24Here it is.
00:52:26All the equipment you need for cutting the pure junk.
00:52:28Yeah.
00:52:29These boys are sure of themselves.
00:52:31They do their processing right here.
00:52:33I guess Connie was on the level.
00:52:34Mr. Stasser is in the dope racket, all right?
00:52:35All right.
00:52:36Jim.
00:52:37I'll check around downstairs.
00:52:38You can cover the office here.

00:52:57All right.
00:53:02Doug, what's it doing?
00:53:04Tell me, James.
00:53:07I'm going to be looking for the DNP in for the 복.
00:56:17I got a boat here.
00:56:19Just looking for parts.
00:56:20You're a liar.
00:56:23Come on, let's have it.
00:56:24Okay, I'll tell you.
00:56:25I'm down here from Canada.
00:56:27I got fouled up in a deal with Dolly Carney.
00:56:31Carney, huh?
00:56:32Go on.
00:56:33What about him?
00:56:35I put up 25 grand to him.
00:56:37Got no stuff.
00:56:38He told me you guys operated out of here.
00:56:43Keep talking.
00:56:45I like it.
00:56:46I figured I could grab a bundle of your stuff.
00:56:49You dirty phoenix!
00:56:51Hang on to him.
00:56:52Come on, let's look around.
00:56:53Maybe he brought some friends.
00:56:54We'll finish this outside.
00:57:12Get going.
00:57:13Uh-uh.
00:57:14We're taking him to the boss.
00:57:15This guy might want to talk some more.
00:57:17Sure, take me to the boss.
00:57:19He's just the guy I want to see.
00:57:20I'll talk plumbing.
00:57:21Okay, let's go.
00:57:22The boss is going to wonder just how many pals Carney's got.
00:57:41How much he's told them.
00:57:52Come on, let's go.
00:58:22These are all his things.
00:58:37Everything Mickey get on him.
00:58:40I'll have them taken out to his folks.
00:58:43Okay.
00:58:45Who's going to drop out there later?
00:58:47Sure, Jim.
00:58:48I can have someone else.
00:58:50All right.
00:58:51Our hand lift.
00:58:52There's not much to bring to this.
00:58:55That.
00:58:58Three lines on page 27.
00:59:02Nothing about what kind of a guy he was.
00:59:05Not even his name.
00:59:07The case isn't closed, so he's an unidentified body.
00:59:11That's the way the road ends sometimes.
00:59:15It ends when we close this case.
00:59:17John, we've got to close this case.
00:59:19There's only one chance left.
00:59:21Wiley?
00:59:22It's a long shot, but I want you to let me take it.
00:59:24But Jim is too wild.
00:59:25No time for preparation.
00:59:26No cover story.
00:59:27We don't need a cover story.
00:59:28These people don't even know one.
00:59:29I don't want two men killed on this case.
00:59:32Are you to take this Wiley's place?
00:59:33We don't even know who sent him, Jim.
00:59:36Or how much he was supposed to buy.
00:59:37And we'll never know that from the outside.
00:59:40We couldn't have Stasser and take a chance on finding the stuff.
00:59:43There are hundreds of Stassers.
00:59:45Grab him and another one pops up.
00:59:47We want the man at the top.
00:59:48Oh, sure.
00:59:49How do we know Wiley was going to deal with the top?
00:59:51If I'm Wiley, they'll deal the way I want them to deal.
00:59:53Jim, there's no time.
00:59:54All we know is Wiley's on his way here by plane.
00:59:57You could never...
00:59:57John, there's a million dollars worth of dope involved here.
01:00:01One-tenth of that is enough to start a dozen crime waves.
01:00:03Get more guys killed.
01:00:04More guys like...
01:00:07We've got to stop that.
01:00:10You've got to let me pull Wiley off that plane.
01:00:19Get me Morrison in San Francisco.
01:00:21The San Francisco Bureau went into action.
01:00:24If a man named Wiley made plans to leave,
01:00:27they would know about it.
01:00:31Notify all airlines and travel agencies
01:00:34to be on lookout for a man named Wiley.
01:00:37Every clerk in every office was on the alert.
01:00:43Every ticket purchased was under close scrutiny.
01:00:51And finally, when a man named Wiley was ready for a trip to New York,
01:00:58Agent Kerry of the San Francisco Bureau was ready to go along.
01:01:01The Chicago stopover was the break the narcotics agents needed.
01:01:13The Chicago stopover was the break the narcotics agents needed.
01:01:28As soon as Wiley stepped off the plane,
01:01:30and before he could communicate with anyone,
01:01:33he walked unsuspecting into the custody of the authorities.
01:01:36And he was quietly removed to the seclusion of one of the officers.
01:01:43Okay, Wiley.
01:01:44We know everything about you.
01:01:46You're on your way to New York to buy up the Florentine shipment.
01:01:49You can make it easier for yourself if you open up to us.
01:01:51No idea what you're talking about.
01:01:53I'm on a vacation.
01:01:54You have no idea how long a vacation, brother.
01:01:58I'm giving you a chance to shorten it.
01:02:00You're wasting your time and mine, too.
01:02:02The plane leaves in a few minutes.
01:02:03This is the end of the line for you, Wiley.
01:02:05Let's have some conversation.
01:02:07No comments.
01:02:10How are your boys doing back here?
01:02:11Just his clothes in the bag and a lot of phony papers.
01:02:14No money?
01:02:15No.
01:02:16The deal was supposed to be cash.
01:02:18Routine cards in the wallet except for this.
01:02:20The word on the right is Al Yoxie.
01:02:28They've been booked in communicado.
01:02:30Gary and I are going downtown.
01:02:31We've got some business.
01:02:34All the experience and skill of the department's technicians were brought into play.
01:02:39And within a very short while, Flannery had completed the first step in the process of becoming Wiley.
01:02:45In the few minutes at his disposal, Flannery had to be briefed on the record of Al Yoxie, big shot in a West Coast narcotics ring.
01:02:53But in spite of all their efforts, no lead, no clues, no information available on Wiley.
01:03:01To make his impersonation come off, Flannery would have to play for the brakes.
01:03:07It was going to take luck and much more than that.
01:03:10Later that afternoon, when Flannery arrived at LaGuardia Field in New York, it was a man named Wiley who walked into the airport building.
01:03:26Assocated Airways, flight 219 for Chicago and Los Angeles, now leaving at gate 5.
01:03:35All aboard, please.
01:03:36Assocated Airways, flight 119 for Los Angeles, now leaving at gate 5.
01:03:55All aboard, please.
01:03:56Passengers Rodney and Dickinson, please step to the Transnational Airline counter.
01:04:06Passengers Rodney and Dickinson, please.
01:04:17Flight 127 from Hawaii, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, now arriving at gate 7.
01:04:23The men of the Bureau of Narcotics kept a watchful eye on Flannery and reported the success of his first contact with the gang.
01:04:32Supervising agent Meredith and his men could only stand by and wait to see if Flannery could find his way, his identity undetected, to the missing shipment from the SS Florentine and signal them to close in.
01:04:47Until then, Flannery would have to face the risks of his dangerous impersonation alone.
01:04:53Yes?
01:04:54Yes?
01:04:55Yes?
01:04:55What?
01:04:57When?
01:04:59Why the blazes didn't they check with us before they released him?
01:05:04Dolly Carney was released this morning.
01:05:06He's liable to go straight to Stassen.
01:05:08If he sees Jim, it's all over.
01:05:10So help me, you guys are real pals, and you can tell whoever went Dolly Kearney's bail
01:05:21and Dolly Kearney won't forget it.
01:05:22They'll be glad to hear it.
01:05:23Thanks a lot for the lift.
01:05:25A lot of service.
01:05:30Where are you going?
01:05:31Up with you.
01:05:32What for?
01:05:33Got things to talk about.
01:05:34How much of your guts did you spill in the can, Flavermouth?
01:05:51I didn't tell them anything, Leo.
01:05:53So help me.
01:05:54Somebody else must have fingered you, not me.
01:05:58I hear the palo bailed me out.
01:06:01He said it was a friend.
01:06:02He didn't say who, but I guessed it was you.
01:06:03How much did you tell the cops?
01:06:06As much as you told the Canadian?
01:06:09I didn't tell the cops anything, Leo.
01:06:12What's with the Canadian?
01:06:12What are you going to do, Leo?
01:06:21What are you going to do?
01:06:35I didn't tell them anything, Leo.
01:06:36I didn't tell them anything.
01:06:37Suicide.
01:06:38Suicide.
01:06:43Oh, no.
01:06:45No, you must be wrong.
01:07:00I see.
01:07:04You can't be.
01:07:07I can't be.
01:08:08I'm Stassi.
01:08:12Glad to meet you.
01:08:16You're late.
01:08:18Sorry, I...
01:08:20had some arrangements I had to make on the way.
01:08:22Missed my connection.
01:08:28Al Yaxi sent his regards.
01:08:38Sit down.
01:08:40Riley.
01:08:42Riley.
01:08:44We can do business now.
01:08:46You brought the money.
01:08:48I haven't seen the merchandise.
01:08:54I have my orders.
01:08:56I have my orders.
01:08:58I'm not buying air.
01:09:04I have my orders.
01:09:06I have my orders.
01:09:08I'm not buying air.
01:09:10I haven't seen the merchandise.
01:09:16I have my orders.
01:09:18I'm not buying air.
01:09:20I have my orders.
01:09:22I don't know.
01:09:26I can't believe it.
01:09:28I have my orders.
01:09:30I can do this.
01:09:32I don't know what it is.
01:09:34I don't know what I do.
01:09:36It doesn't matter.
01:09:38I don't know where pastiverses are coming in.
01:09:40All right.
01:10:06We can do business now.
01:10:08Sure we can.
01:10:09If we see the 200 grand.
01:10:11We'll take the money now, Wiley.
01:10:13I haven't got it.
01:10:14Where is it?
01:10:15I haven't got it with me.
01:10:17You think I'm that stupid?
01:10:20You think I want to wind up the way that purser did?
01:10:23It's a double clause.
01:10:25I'll take you to the money as soon as I see the head man.
01:10:28How do you know you're not talking to the head man?
01:10:31I only know what I've been told.
01:10:34Yoxie had nothing whatsoever about that in the letter.
01:10:36Not in the letter, naturally.
01:10:37I've got my orders.
01:10:41I deal with the top or I don't deal.
01:10:45Keep them here.
01:10:47Sit down.
01:10:48And in the headquarters of the enforcement unit, the men of the Bureau waited for the
01:10:57prearranged signal from Flannery.
01:11:00Until it came, they could do nothing.
01:11:03Yet they knew that his situation must be growing more dangerous with every passing moment.
01:11:07You're being very difficult, Mr. Wiley.
01:11:23Think I'd come here with two hundred grand on me?
01:11:25A man could get hurt that way.
01:11:26A man can get hurt in many ways.
01:11:27To be crude about it.
01:11:28You had seen the merchandise?
01:11:29I want to see the money.
01:11:30It'll be here in fifteen minutes.
01:11:31After I make a phone call.
01:11:32A phone call?
01:11:33To who?
01:11:34The money was sent to our contact in town.
01:11:35And to call him as soon as I'm satisfied that the deal's on the level.
01:11:37This wasn't mentioned to me.
01:11:38You're supposed to bring the cash with him.
01:11:39Would you have brought it?
01:11:40We'll play this your way for a while.
01:11:41But if this is a trick, join your friends with him.
01:11:42You're not the only one.
01:11:43It'll be here in fifteen minutes.
01:11:44I'll be here in fifteen minutes.
01:11:45After I make a phone call.
01:11:46After I make a phone call.
01:11:47A phone call?
01:11:48To who?
01:11:49The money was sent to our contact in town.
01:11:50And to call him as soon as I'm satisfied that the deal's on the level.
01:11:51This wasn't mentioned to me.
01:11:52You're supposed to bring the cash with him.
01:11:53Would you have brought it?
01:11:56We'll play this your way.
01:12:01For a while.
01:12:04But if this is a trick, join your friends with him.
01:12:07You and your friends with him, Mr. Wiley.
01:12:09Where is the phone?
01:12:10On the dock.
01:12:11Just a minute.
01:12:12Ike?
01:12:17What number do you call?
01:12:24Call this number.
01:12:25Tell them to send the money in a box by a uniformed messenger to the Brooklyn Municipal Pier.
01:12:32We'll be there in forty minutes.
01:12:34Forty minutes.
01:12:35Brooklyn Municipal Pier.
01:12:36Forty minutes.
01:12:37Why not have it brought here?
01:12:39A public pier.
01:12:41The most unlikely place for a strong arm tactics.
01:12:44You guys got sore because we were so cautious.

01:13:22The guy answered.
01:13:23Says the money will be there.
01:13:24We'll shove off immediately.
01:13:25Right over.
01:13:26Put the stuff in Mr. Wiley's back.
01:13:27If everything goes well, we'll put your shore at the pier.

01:14:26Oh, well, Little Red Riding Hood!
01:14:27Hello.
01:14:28This is a pleasure.
01:14:29You two know each other?
01:14:30Yes.
01:14:31We met through a mutual friend.
01:14:32What are you doing here?
01:14:33This is a pleasure.
01:14:36You two know each other?
01:14:37Yes, we met through a mutual friend.
01:14:40What are you doing here?
01:14:42Oh, I'm just a business associate.
01:14:47Mr. Wiley and I have a little business matter to discuss.
01:14:51Do you mind?
01:14:52It won't be a moment.
01:14:59A lovely girl, our friend.
01:15:01Yes.
01:15:03Little Red Riding Hood.
01:15:05You seem to know her better than I do.
01:15:07I've known her a few months.
01:15:09I met her on my last trip in.
01:15:12A few months.
01:15:13You do have an advantage over me.
01:15:19You seem rather upset over seeing your friend, Mr. Wiley.
01:15:23It's only that I was so surprised.
01:15:25I can hardly blame you.
01:15:27He tells me he hasn't seen you in several years.
01:15:29I'll join you in a minute, Mr. Wiley.
01:15:53Lenny.
01:15:54Please prepare some drinks.
01:15:59When we reach the bay, head out to the open seat.
01:16:05Before we keep that appointment,
01:16:07there are a few matters to be straightened out.
01:16:09He should have been here by now.
01:16:13I think we're in for trouble.
01:16:15Let me have that phone.
01:16:1923, over.
01:16:22Merritt is speaking.
01:16:22The order isn't shown.
01:16:25Call Coast Guard and request an immediate search.
01:16:27Go, Mr. Wiley.
01:17:11Interesting, isn't it, now that we're all here together, that you two should have
01:17:18known each other before.
01:17:20Now tell me, when is it you said you met?
01:17:23Here's one maybe you can answer.
01:17:25We should have been at the pier by now.
01:17:26What's holding us up?
01:17:27You wouldn't be changing the subject of you, Mr. Wiley.
01:17:29You said 40 minutes.
01:17:30What about it?
01:17:31Very good question.
01:17:33What about it?
01:17:41You don't seem to be enjoying our cruise, my dear.
01:17:46Let Lenny pour you another drink.
01:17:49No.
01:17:50No thanks.
01:17:53There are searchlights out there.
01:17:55Coming up behind us.

01:18:09It's for your own safety.
01:18:10My own safety?

01:18:13You killed him.
01:18:14You're murderous.
01:18:15Take her away.
01:18:16And you, Mr. Wiley, or whatever your name is, if you hadn't arrested Dolly, they never
01:18:20would have killed him.
01:18:22Arrested?
01:18:28Hold him here.
01:18:29You won't let me tie him up.
01:18:30Mr. Wiley is leaving the boat.
01:18:35We shall miss him.

01:20:38The facts and figures of the case were filed away.
01:20:41The story of the man who stand guard at America's front door, the port of New York.
