On the evening of July 1, the Northern Territory lit up in a flurry of bangs, smoke and unregulated explosives as thousands of people celebrated Territory Day.
00:00Doors open for a 12-hour sale unlike any other.
00:06Many of those first to line up, visitors and new arrivals from states with no cracker day to call their own.
00:13Mate, this is my first one, so I'm going out with a bang.
00:17That's the plan. I don't have a plan, I just want to blow up heaps of these.
00:21Hopefully I'll go home without any inquiries.
00:24While in Alice Springs, Territory Day veterans know exactly what to expect.
00:29It goes like this. Boom! In the air it goes like that.
00:34They're going to do different shapes. Like bang!
00:39Hundreds of tonnes of fireworks worth millions of dollars are expected to go up in smoke tonight,
00:45with retailers popping up all over the Territory, catering specifically to the NT's special night.
00:51It's good to see parents, grandparents, bring their nephews, kids and show what cracker night's all about.
00:57Unfortunately it's been outlawed in the rest of the states, but it's good to see Northern Territory have still got the opportunity to sell fireworks and let them off.
01:05After last month's temporary seizure of Territory Day fireworks by authorities in New South Wales,
01:10retailers big and small say they're relieved their shipments have finally made it up north in time for tonight's celebrations.
01:17And they have a message for authorities down south on behalf of Territorians.
01:22We're the NT, leave us alone.
01:24But I do have a message for everyone is, if you let something off, put it in a bin.
01:29Don't leave your empty fireworks down on the beach. It's horrible.
