Transcript
00:00Welcome to WatchMojo and today we're counting down our picks for the movie characters who
00:10were too good or survived too much to be taken out so tragically.
00:14We'll be excluding animated movies and animals from this list as both deserve their own recognition.
00:19But if it weren't obvious already, beware of major spoilers ahead.
00:3120.
00:32Yondu Udanto – Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
00:35This Marvel trilogy sure knows how to redeem the universe's most misunderstood beings,
00:40and Yondu might be the most notable example.
00:42A fearsome ravager who kidnapped Peter Quill as a child, Yondu doesn't exactly make the
00:48greatest first impression on audiences, but Vol. 2 provides some unexpected depth to
00:59this contentious relationship, revealing that Yondu's decision to raise Peter actually
01:03protected him from his genocidal father, Ego.
01:06That devotion runs deep enough for him to sacrifice his life as Ego's planet explodes, flying
01:18into space with only one air supply, Yondu willingly surrenders to the endless void so that Quill
01:23can go on.
01:24It's a devastating blow for the Guardians leader, who only realizes what he meant to Yondu in
01:29to begin mourning him.
01:4119.
01:42Cassie Thomas – Promising Young Woman
01:44This Oscar-winning film provides new meaning to the phrase revenge is a dish best served
01:48code.
01:49Cassie lost her friend Nina after the latter was assaulted, making it her mission to confront
01:53the man responsible and those who vouch for him.
01:5620.
01:57Uh, so what do I, uh…
01:58Get on the back.
01:5920.
02:00Okay.
02:01Her unconventional vigilantism on top of Carey Mulligan's provocative performance makes
02:05Cassie an easy character to root for.
02:08So our jaws were on the floor when her plan seemingly failed after her target, Al Monroe,
02:13suffocated her.
02:1420.
02:15No!
02:16Just stop moving!
02:1720.
02:18Just move up, please!
02:1920.
02:20But Promising Young Woman is a movie as unpredictable as this lead character, who thankfully has a
02:24backup plan to ensure that Al gets what's coming to him.
02:28And so, it's fair to say that justice could have been much sweeter had Cassie lived to see
02:33it served.
02:3420.
02:35I cannot begin to tell you how much I've thought about it.
02:3918.
02:40Spock – Star Trek II – The Wrath of Khan
02:42Thanks to production leaks and test screening publicity, this was a death many Trekkies were
02:47expecting, but one that still broke millions of hearts.
02:5020.
02:51Out of danger?
02:5220.
02:53Out of danger?
02:5420.
02:55Yes.
02:5620.
02:57Don't grieve, Admiral.
02:58It's logical.
02:5920.
03:00While the Enterprise ultimately defeats the titular villain, Khan manages to activate his Genesis
03:12device before his own demise.
03:14Acting quickly, the level-headed Spock makes the logical yet selfless decision to repair the
03:18ship's warp drive, allowing it to escape the impeding explosion.
03:22In the process, however, he leaves himself vulnerable to lethal radiation.
03:2520.
03:26The needs of the many outweigh him.
03:2921.
03:30The needs of the few or the one.
03:3521.
03:36The science officer's final moments with Captain Kirk are nothing short of agonizing for anyone
03:41who's witnessed the adventures of these two friends.
03:44But Spock's honor gives the crew members a reason to journey on, making the emotional
03:48weight of his actions that much more significant.
03:5021.
03:51Live long.
03:5221.
03:53And prosper.
03:5421.
03:5517.
03:56Private Jeanette Vasquez, Aliens.
03:57It's safe to say death hangs heavy over this entire franchise, but Aliens packs an especially
04:11big wallop thanks to the strong dynamic of the marines sent to combat the colony of xenomorphs.
04:1622.
04:17I'll go to the side.
04:1822.
04:19You'll do that, man.
04:2023.
04:21Bidding adieu to Bill Paxton's comedically panicked Hudson was tough enough, but the real
04:25kicker was Private Vasquez's farewell a few moments later.
04:2923.
04:30VASCAS!
04:3123.
04:32Go!
04:3323.
04:34Arguably the most capable member of the unit, Vasquez eventually finds herself cornered
04:40in an air duct alongside a feeble Lieutenant Gorman.
04:4324.
04:46Knowing that a worse fate awaits them otherwise, Vasquez and Gorman choose to go out together
04:51by setting off a grenade.
04:52It's a noble end for a noble character as Vasquez not only went down fighting but gave
04:57her comrades the chance they needed to escape.
05:0016.
05:01Johnny Cade, The Outsiders.
05:03If any character in this coming-of-age staple deserved a happier ending, it was Johnny Cade.
05:08Mistreated by his family, Johnny takes what little comfort he can find in his fellow greasers.
05:1317.
05:14Man, that was a tough car, huh?
05:1617.
05:17Mustangs.
05:18They're tough.
05:1917.
05:20But when Johnny and Ponyboy are forced to go on the run after a gang fight turns fatal,
05:25the former spends the remainder of the story atoning for his sins.
05:2918.
05:30Luckily, Johnny is able to see the light after saving a group of kids from a fire.
05:3919.
05:40Though critically injured in the rescue, he ultimately learns that there's more to life
05:43than violence and encourages Ponyboy to stay gold.
05:47It's hard-earned wisdom well beyond his years, and it's more than bittersweet knowing that
05:51Johnny didn't have enough time to put that wisdom into practice.
05:5419.
05:55Stay gold, Ponyboy.
05:56Stay gold.
05:5715.
05:58Radio Raheem, Do the Right Thing.
06:00On the hottest day of summer, things reach a boiling point on a street in Brooklyn.
06:07Spike Lee's 1989 classic boldly confronts racial tensions through the lens of a predominantly
06:12black neighborhood and the Italian pizzeria they patronize.
06:15Sal, we're gonna boycott your fat pasta ass.
06:18You're gonna boycott me?
06:20The unease surrounding the restaurant's lack of representation on its wall of fame spills
06:25over when a fight breaks out between the owner, Sal, and Radio Raheem.
06:29The police arrive shortly thereafter, and one officer's overt aggression results in Raheem's
06:35untimely death.
06:36The grisly and avoidable nature of the act makes Raheem's loss even more pointed today
06:44than it was then.
06:45It's an all-too-real portrayal of how unforgiving the world can be, as even those with the purest
06:51intentions can meet the most awful fates.
06:5314.
06:54M.
06:55Coinciding with the 50th anniversary of cinema's most iconic spy, Skyfall is a fitting exploration
07:04of the past catching up with the present.
07:06In one of his most personal missions, James Bond is out to stop ex-MI6 agent Raul Silva
07:11from carrying out a revenge plot against their cunning boss, M.
07:14Well, I'm not hiding in there if that's your brilliant plan.
07:17We're changing vehicles.
07:19The trouble with company cars is they have trackers.
07:22In the process, Skyfall throws in a multitude of surprises for long-time viewers, but the
07:28biggest one comes in the explosive climax, where M is shot by Silva.
07:32Judy Dench's tenure with the Bond franchise lasted nearly two decades, so it was certifiably
07:42upsetting to finally see her go, especially considering M's fearlessness in the face of
07:47danger.
07:48She may take her death in stride, but we definitely don't, and neither does Bond.
07:53I suppose it's too late to make a run for it.
08:03Well, I'm game if you are.
08:0613.
08:07T-800
08:08Terminator 2 – Judgment Day
08:10Perhaps the most unexpected improvement in his sci-fi sequel was his more humane portrayal
08:14of the titular robot.
08:15Come with me if you want to live.
08:17Reprogrammed to better the resistance, the Terminator becomes a loyal ally and friend to
08:21John and Sarah Connor, as he protects them from the malevolent T-1000.
08:25The T-800 learns his fair share about humanity's worth in the process, culminating in an ending
08:30we're still getting choked up about.
08:32I know now why you cry, but it's something I can never do.
08:38Knowing that his existence threatens the future, the T-800 willingly lowers himself
08:42into a vat of molten steel to prevent the creation of Skynet.
08:45Between Sarah's newfound respect, John's tearful protestations, and the cyborgs'
08:50accepting thumbs up, this moment incites a wide variety of reactions.
08:55Despite the franchise's longevity, it's still a deeply felt sequence to this day.
09:0312.
09:04Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor – Rogue One – A Star Wars Story
09:09Rebellions may be built on hope, but that doesn't stop the Star Wars franchise from traversing
09:14tragic and dark territory in pursuit of it.
09:16Look no further than the scrappy rebels of Rogue One if you need proof.
09:20All I wanna do right now is get a handle on what we're up against.
09:23So we're gonna go very small and very careful of the rights and see what's what.
09:27Led by the tenacious Jyn Erso and Cassian Andor, they all know their plan to steal the Death Star
09:33plans is one they're unlikely to survive, but that doesn't stop them from trying.
09:45It's a gut punch of an ending as each team member dies one by one, culminating in Jyn
09:51in Cassian's sobering final moments as they await the Death Star's destruction of Scarif.
09:55Your father would have been proud of you, Jyn.
09:59But whether they know it or not, their actions ultimately seal the Empire's fate, reminding
10:04us that some sacrifices, however sad, are still necessary.
10:0811.
10:09Captain John H. Miller – Saving Private Ryan The unflinching perspective Saving Private Ryan brings
10:14to World War II means his portrayal of death is about as morose as it gets.
10:31Captain Miller's squadron experienced horrific fates in their mission to bring home the titular
10:35Private Ryan, but it's the captain himself whose death hits hardest.
10:39Assisting Ryan in defending a bridge during the film's finale, Miller is shot by a German
10:43POW that his men reluctantly released earlier in the film.
10:47On top of its tragic irony, what makes Miller's final moments so egregious is that he survived
10:52incredible odds only to go down in a quick and uncaring manner.
10:56His final words to Ryan are stirring in their simplicity, leaving the homebound soldier in
11:05us eternally inspired by his choices.
11:0810.
11:09Queen Ramonda – Black Panther – Wakanda Forever MCU fans were well prepared for this
11:20Black Panther sequel to swing for the emotional fences, but in one of the franchise's more
11:25startling sequences, Wakanda's fragile royal family is hit with a loss that not even we
11:30saw coming.
11:37Under attack by King Namor of Telecon, Queen Ramonda finds herself trapped in the flooded throne room
11:42with Riri Williams, the scientist Namor intends to kill.
11:45Ever the virtuous ruler, Ramonda manages to save Riri from the destruction, but her impeccable
11:50morals extract a heavy toll.
11:53By the time Shuri and the Dora Milaje come to her aid, Ramonda is already beyond saving.
11:59Letitia Wright's devastating performance sells every bit of Shuri's loss and loneliness,
12:03as she's now left to reckon with yet another tragedy.
12:069.
12:07Sirius Black – Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
12:16The only person dealt a tougher hand than Harry Potter himself was his godfather Sirius.
12:22Estranged from his intolerant family and imprisoned for a crime he didn't commit, Sirius remains
12:27by Harry's side long after escaping from Azkaban.
12:30That's what makes his sudden demise in the climax of Order of the Phoenix so unjust.
12:38Hit with the killing curse by Bellatrix Lestrange, Sirius passing is magic in its cruelest form.
12:48One moment he's there and the next he isn't.
12:51It's hard not to feel just as confused, distraught and helpless as the boy who lived when yet another family member gives their life to protect him.
13:05It matters worse, future installments would also see Dumbledore and Dobby make similar sacrifices to equally tragic results.
13:118.
13:12Apollo Creed – Rocky IV
13:14For as unhinged as the Rocky franchise became in later installments, the boxing sequences still managed to pack a visceral punch from time to time.
13:21Come on, get your hands up, man! You need an interpreter? It's time to go to school!
13:26You're gonna lose.
13:28Case in point, few went into Rocky IV expecting to see the charismatic Apollo Creed go down for good.
13:34Outmatched by Soviet extraordinaire Ivan Drago, there's no way out for the former heavyweight champ.
13:40But Apollo is too overwhelmed by his pride to have Rocky throw in the towel on his behalf.
13:44You can't do no more out there. I'm here to fight. He's killing you. I gotta stop this thing.
13:49I'm here to fight, promise me. You're not gonna stop this fight.
13:52The protagonist honors the request, but at the cost of his enemy turned mentor's life.
13:56As Apollo lay motionless in the ring and Drago shows no remorse, the otherwise goofy Rocky IV takes a hard right turn with the loss of a character audiences had just grown to appreciate.
14:07Number 7, Lieutenant Nick Goose Bradshaw, Top Gun.
14:19Here's a moment that shook our nerves and rattled our brains.
14:22This iconic 80's actioneer gave us a wingman for the ages in Goose Bradshaw.
14:27We're gonna have a big time. Always.
14:32As Maverick's backseater and best friend, Goose keeps the rebellious pilot's feet on the ground while simultaneously encouraging his antics.
14:39On top of that, he's also a devoted family man. Unfortunately, his life is just too good to last.
14:46During a fateful exercise, the duo are forced to eject after the plane flames out.
14:57While Maverick parachutes to safety, Goose fatally collides with the jet's canopy.
15:01Our disbelief is as palatable as Maverick's guilt, and the fact that this incident carries further weight in the film's sequel just goes to show that not even time can heal all wounds.
15:12Captain Mitchell was cleared of any wrongdoing. Goose's death was an accident.
15:16Is that how you see it, Captain? Is that how Goose's son sees it?
15:19Number 6, Shoshana Dreyfus in Glorious Bastards.
15:23Sometimes revenge is cold, but here it's red hot.
15:26In Quentin Tarantino's revisionist take on World War II, Shoshana Dreyfus is a Jewish cinema owner quietly plotting vengeance against the Nazi commander after losing her entire family.
15:36An archetypal Tarantino heroine, she's sympathetic, highly observant, and above all, a badass.
15:45It's oh so gratifying when her plan to take out the Third Reich secedes in fiery fashion, but she's ultimately unable to see the full realization of her brilliant scheme.
15:54Mere moments before her theater is set ablaze, she's taken out by longtime admirer Frederick Zoller.
16:07It definitely caps the film off on a less than happy note.
16:11But Shoshana's bravery and pride in a cause greater than herself leaves us glad we got to know her.
16:25Number 5, Jack Dawson, Titanic.
16:28Part of what makes this character's departure so gut-wrenching is his passion for life.
16:32Jack Dawson doesn't have a penny to his name, but his artistry, sense of humor, and whirliness makes him immediately endearing.
16:39His whirlwind romance with Rose is certifiably swoon-worthy, but the Titanic's fate had tragic plans for their time together.
16:50As the two fight for their lives in the icy waters of the North Atlantic, Jack helps Rose take refuge on top of a floating panel.
16:57Be alright now. Be alright now.
17:02Regardless of whether or not there was room for both of them, it's an unquestionable act of love on his part.
17:08But this only makes things harder to stomach when help arrives, with Rose left helpless as Jack is lost to the ocean.
17:14Promise me now, Rose. And never let go of that promise. That promise.
17:23Number 4, Boromir, The Lord of the Rings, The Fellowship of the Ring.
17:27The line between good and evil is clearly drawn in this epic trilogy, but Boromir is one of the few characters to flirt with it.
17:34It is a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing. Such a little thing.
17:46His arrogance and lust for power leaves us unsure if we can trust him after he joins The Fellowship's journey to Mordor.
17:52And our suspicions are seemingly confirmed after he tries to steal The One Ring from Frodo.
17:58However, his regret is immediate and palpable and he more than redeems himself by defending Merry and Pippin from an onslaught of Uruk-hai.
18:05Even after being hit with arrows, Boromir heroically continues to stand up for his newfound friends.
18:18His demise is as dramatic as the metamorphosis he undergoes beforehand.
18:22And we're left to wonder what more he was capable of.
18:35Number 3, Guido Orifice, Life is Beautiful.
18:38In addition to its heartbreaking portrayal of the Holocaust, Life is Beautiful is also one of the most moving depictions of parenthood ever put to film.
18:45But how many points have we done today?
18:47Today, I'm 50.
18:49Well, I'm 48.
18:51I've got two points because I'm stuck while playing at the camp.
18:58Writer-director Roberto Benigni also headlines his Italian dramedy as Guido,
19:03a Jewish man who convinces his son, Josue, that their time in a concentration camp is all an elaborate game.
19:09Absolutely nothing shakes his resolve, not even the reality of his impending execution.
19:14As Guido is led away by German soldiers, he maintains the facade long enough for Josue to remain unaware of the atrocities.
19:24Life is Beautiful honors Guido's efforts by sparing us the horror of his final moment.
19:29But the lengths he's willing to go to protect his son only makes his lost sting that much more.
19:352. Logan slash Wolverine
19:44Perhaps it was fitting for an older, more hardened take on Wolverine to scar us in ways we could have never imagined.
19:50Logan sees the titular character protecting his daughter Laura from the mutant hunting reavers while also reckoning with his own mortality.
19:57You've got to check yourself into a hospital. Find out what it is.
20:00I know what it is.
20:02With his adamantium skeleton slowly poisoning him, Logan finds the energy for a climatic rampage through the forest but can't compete with X-24, his unhinged clone.
20:11Left to succumb to his wounds after a tense battle, Logan's parting advice to Laura are earth-shattering to the least, especially for longtime fans.
20:22Don't be what they made you.
20:26Future appearances be damned. It's a testament to Hugh Jackman's commitment that his last stand as Logan hurt this much.
20:32After 17 years, a beloved character was gone, but a legacy was solidified.

20:57In a sinister world, kindness can arrive in the most unexpected form.
21:01That's what the mystical John Coffey embodies throughout this Stephen King adaptation.
21:05What did you just do to me?
21:09I helped it.
21:11Stranded on death row for a crime he didn't commit, John's miraculous healing abilities earn the fascination of the guards, especially Paul Edgecombe.
21:18It's a magical circumstance that leads to a magical kinship, but one that's destined to end tragically.
21:24Paul comes to believe in John's innocence, but is unable to prevent his execution, leading to what has to be one of the saddest endings in movie history.
21:31I'll be alright, fellas.
21:33The movie's thought-provoking fantasy is stripped away in favor of cruel reality.
21:37And while John accepts his fate, we're left begging through the screen for Paul not to go through with it.
