Okay, so my name's Pam Robinson and I'm the sergeant currently in charge of the Eastern
00:04
Neighbourhood Community Team at Police Headquarters. Today we're here to launch the Herbert Protocol.
00:11
Herbert Protocol is a joint initiative with the Isle of Man Constabulary, Forget Me Not Charity,
00:18
Admiral Nurses and the Hospice. Essentially, this was launched in the UK in 2018 and it's
00:25
based around, it's called Herbert Protocol because an ex-war veteran called George Herbert,
00:30
he had dementia and essentially lost his life trying to find his childhood home. So it's an
00:36
initiative to help people with the dementia so we can record information accurately and if they go
00:43
missing we can get them home or get them the right help that they need. So essentially all you have
00:48
to do is come down, grab a pack or you can find the packs online and we can send them out. You fill
00:53
out an application form, not an application form but a form that has all the details on it and it
00:59
logs all the essential details along with a picture and then essentially all that information gets
01:04
loaded onto the app which can be controlled by family, friends or even the person and then you
01:09
get given a band or a little key ring and then the person wears it or you can tag the key ring into a
01:17
coat and if they need help any member of the public can then scan the band and it will have
01:23
the essential information that's required to get that person home or the help that they need.
01:28
Okay so I'm Gemma Wilde, I'm part of the Forget Me Not charity. We support the Admiral Nurse Service
01:36
on the Isle of Man who help families with dementia including the carers and we've collaborated with
01:46
the local constabulary to promote the Herbert protocol so we have provided the wristbands and the fobs that
01:56
will help people when they go missing. We also provide these lovely interactive animals and anything else that
02:06
we can help with. Well obviously it's a very scary situation if somebody that you love is showing signs of
02:15
dementia and on many occasions they get confused, get lost and so the Herbert protocol is a vital
02:25
thing to have on the island to help take away that fear hopefully as much as possible.
