00:00Little Jimmy's mom was serving prunes for dessert, but little Jimmy did not like prunes one bit.
00:05He grumbled and complained and refused to eat them.
00:08Little Jimmy's mom got very cross with him and told him that God would be very angry if he did not eat his prunes.
00:14Still, Jimmy would not eat them, so in desperation she sent him to his room.
00:19Later in the evening, a fierce thunderstorm blew up.
00:21There was much thunder and much lightning.
00:24Feeling somewhat sorry for her son and worried he might be afraid of the storm,
00:27Jimmy's mom went to his room to check on him.
00:29When she opened the door, Jimmy was looking out the window.
00:33She heard him say, gee whiz, God, all this for two measly prunes?
00:39First, I'm with Jimmy. Prunes for dessert? That's not right.
00:43Somebody brought that to me. I might gripe a little bit too.
00:48I am thankful that I grew up in an era with no streaming.
00:52You know what I'm talking about, TV streaming?
00:54I grew up in the era, my first job was remote control
00:58because Dad would be like, go flip the thing.
01:02For those of you who don't know, TVs used to have these knobs on them
01:04that you had to turn to get to the channel, right?
01:07So I had grandparents and my parents, they always,
01:11when you have three channels, you watch the same thing every week, right?
01:15And there was always two shows that they never missed.
01:17The first show my grandmother would watch,
01:217 o'clock every Saturday night on PBS, was Lawrence Welk.
01:26Wolf. That was a rough hour for me, let me tell you.
01:32Apparently some people have some feelings on Lawrence Welk.
01:34I apologize.
01:36Me personally, not so much.
01:38I was more of a salty-the-singing-songbook kid, but that's okay.
01:41The second show that they used to watch every week was Hee Haw.
01:47Oh, really?
01:48I wasn't sure you got to know Hee Haw.
01:49All right, that makes me feel a little bit better.
01:51But they never miss it.
01:52And I didn't understand Hee Haw at all.
01:55All I know is they would just laugh and laugh and laugh at these, you know.
02:01So there is one specific part on Hee Haw that they laughed a lot on.
02:07And it was the same gimmick every week.
02:09These four guys would be sitting next to each other.
02:13I was going to show a video, but they had jugs of milk with them,
02:16so I didn't want to show it at church.
02:19But they'd sing the same song.
02:22And the song went something like this.
02:25Gloom, despair, and agony on me.
02:28Deep, dark depression, excessive misery.
02:31If it weren't for bad luck, I'd have no luck at all.
02:34Gloom, despair, and agony on me.
02:37And then they'd say some funny thing that happened to them.
02:40And, you know, in between, they'd, you know, whoa, you know.
02:43Right?
02:44And it was funny.
02:45And they'd laugh.
02:45Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha.
02:46It was great.
02:47And so as I was preparing this sermon on Psalms 13, by the way,
02:52if you want to go there, I'll get you there a little early.
02:54I was thinking about things of, like, woe and despair.
03:00And for some reason, that's the first thing that popped in my mind was
03:03gloom, despair, and agony on me on hee-haw.
03:06So I have to admit, I went and I watched probably a half an hour's worth of them,
03:09and now they're funny.
03:11Back then, I had no idea what they were talking about.
03:13Now, I was like, oh, I get it.
03:14It's funny, right?
03:16However, I really feel like humans, and even Christians,
03:20this is a reality for how they feel sometimes on a daily basis.
03:24Like, it's not funny to them.
03:25But they really sit there, and they really say,
03:28gloom, despair, and agony on me.
03:30Deep, dark depression, excessive misery.
03:32Like, they feel that.
03:33That's what they're going through.
03:34That's what their heart is feeling.
03:36That's what their soul is feeling.
03:39A couple weeks ago, I was getting ready to figure out what I was going to preach on.
03:43You know, I was trying to figure it out.
03:46I wasn't quite sure.
03:47And I was having one of those days.
03:50You know, I was having one of those hee-haw days where I was sitting there,
03:54and I was just not having it.
03:56My soul was heavy.
03:57My heart was heavy.
03:58My brain was just full of, you know, just,
04:01just, okay, I'm just not, it's just not my day.
04:09And I was like, it's time to do my quiet time.
04:11And I was like, I don't want to do my quiet time.
04:14I don't want to talk to God right now.
04:16I don't want to read my Bible right now.
04:18I want to sit here.
04:19I want to wallow in my own self-pity.
04:21I want to be angry.
04:23I want to be sad, because that's what I want to do.
04:27Now, it's probably, you know, who knows?
04:29Maybe it was that I knew that God could help if I actually went to Him.
04:32Maybe it was, you know, it was selfish on my part for not wanting to do it.
04:36I just didn't want to do it.
04:37But I told myself, no, you need to do your quiet time.
04:40So I got ready to do my quiet time.
04:42And I have one of those, you know, yearly Bible reading plans,
04:45you know, read through the Bible in a year.
04:46And I was like, okay, fine, I'll do it.
04:48But man, I'm looking forward to some, you know, Paul railing on the church
04:52or Peter just letting them have it.
04:54You know, give me some good old righteous anger.
04:56And I opened it up, and it said to read the book of Psalms.
04:58And I went, no.
05:01No, come on.
05:03Nothing against Psalms.
05:04I love the book of Psalms, but I'm not a poetry guy.
05:08You know, I'm like, this is not what I need.
05:10I don't need this kind of a lovey-dovey thing.
05:14I want something harsh, you know.
05:16I want something to just really let them have it.
05:20But nope, this is what it said to read.
05:21So I said, okay.
05:22So I opened up my Bible, and I opened up Psalms 13,
05:24and I read Psalms 13, and I went, oh.
05:29And then I read Psalms 13 again, and I went, oh.
05:33And I must have read it three or four more times,
05:35and then I'm like, no, I've got to know more.
05:37So I wanted to know, David wrote Psalm 13,
05:41and why did he write it?
05:44Why did David write Psalm 13?
05:45I needed to know.
05:47So where it came out is 1 Samuel 19, verses 1 and 2.
05:50It says,
05:51And Saul spoke to Jonathan, his son, and to all his servants,
05:54that they should kill David.
05:56But Jonathan, Saul's son, delighted much in David.
06:01And Jonathan told David,
06:02Saul, my father seeks to kill you.
06:04Therefore, be on your guard in the morning.
06:06Stay in a secret place and hide yourself.
06:10Right after this was done,
06:12David took off, and David wrote Psalms 13.
06:15David was tired, and David was frustrated.
06:20At this point, we're going to go a little bit deeper into it,
06:22but at this point, David has already killed Goliath.
06:26David had been anointed as the future king of Israel.
06:30David was a war hero.
06:32Remember, Saul's killed his thousands,
06:33and David is tens of thousands.
06:35That's who David is at this point.
06:37Yet here David is, running from Saul
06:40for doing what God commanded him to do,
06:42no more and no less.
06:43Saul was bitter, Saul was angry,
06:48Saul was jealous, and David was going to pay the price.
06:51So David was on the run.
06:53David runs, and apparently at some point,
06:55he sits down and he writes this psalm.
06:57Now, when we read Psalm,
06:59we pick up our Bible, right,
07:00and we read, okay, here's Psalm 13,
07:02and we read Psalm 13.
07:03Like, it's a chapter in the book of Psalms,
07:06which makes sense.
07:07That's the way it's laid out for us.
07:08For David, David was journaling.
07:11David sat down with whatever he had,
07:13a piece of parchment, whatever he had,
07:15and David wrote out a prayer.
07:17David said, this is my heart.
07:18This is what I need to talk to God about.
07:21This is what I'm dealing with in my own life.
07:24This is how I feel right now.
07:25I don't know how long he wrote it.
07:31You know, I can't wait to ask him.
07:34It's six verses.
07:35We can read the whole thing in about a minute's time.
07:38But you're going to see such complexity in this psalm
07:41that it's like, did it take him just a short time?
07:44Did he write two verses at a time?
07:45I don't know.
07:48The first part of David's psalm
07:50is his discussion with God,
07:52and the first part, he talks with God,
07:53and he's dealing with his despair.
07:56Psalms 13, 1 and 2 says,
07:58How long, O Lord, will you forget me forever?
08:01How long will you hide your face from me?
08:03How long must I take counsel in my soul
08:05and have sorrow in the heart of the day?
08:08How long shall my enemy be exalted over me?
08:12Now, I gave you a brief, like, you know,
08:13a little summary of David's life,
08:15but I think that we need to go a little bit deeper
08:17to show what God has done in David's life to this point.
08:21David was born to be a shepherd.
08:23He was born to be the runt of the litter.
08:25He was born to go out because his brothers were bigger.
08:29They were stronger.
08:29They were better looking.
08:31They were going to do the important stuff.
08:32David, go out and take care of the sheep.
08:35So while David's out there taking care of the sheep,
08:37God said, no, this is the man that I want to be
08:39the next king of Israel.
08:41So God anoints David as the next king of Israel.
08:44Not because David's better than anybody else.
08:47Not because David's better looking or better equipped,
08:49but because David's heart longs after God.
08:53That's why David's going to be the next king of Israel.
08:55God is honoring David by making him the next king of Israel.
09:00Then you go to Goliath.
09:02If you look at Goliath, David goes after Goliath
09:04not because David says, I want to make a name of myself.
09:08This guy was huge.
09:10Remember, David was small.
09:11The Bible says he was ruddy.
09:12He was small.
09:13It's not like he was big in demeanor.
09:16And he goes to visit his brothers,
09:17and he hears this guy belittling God,
09:20saying, your God's nothing.
09:22Your God can't do anything.
09:24Your God's not powerful.
09:25Your God's not mighty.
09:27Your God's not worth it.
09:28And David's like, what are you doing?
09:32You're going to let this guy talk about God that way?
09:34This is crazy.
09:38David didn't go after Goliath
09:40because David thought that he had a chance against this guy.
09:42It was certain death.
09:44But David knew he was going to win.
09:46Why?
09:46Because his God was bigger than Goliath.
09:49That's why he went after Goliath.
09:51And God honored David.
09:53David killed the giant
09:54because David honored God,
09:56and God honored David.
09:58Then you go to the war,
09:59and David went out there,
10:00and David fought many, many wars.
10:02I mean, think of how many people you'd have to kill
10:04for people to start chanting,
10:06Saul has slain his thousands,
10:07and David has slain his tens of thousands.
10:10He must have just went out there
10:11and been such a warrior,
10:12but he's not out there like Arnold Schwarzenegger
10:14in an 80s action flick.
10:18He's out there.
10:19He's doing what God needs him to do.
10:21He's listening to God.
10:22He's following what God wants him to do.
10:24He's honoring God,
10:24and God is honoring David.
10:26David's entire life has been honoring God,
10:28and God honoring David.
10:30I had to read it again,
10:35and I started looking at different texts,
10:38different versions of the Bible
10:41and what they said for Psalms 13.
10:44And just, you know,
10:45even though I don't consider it
10:47an actual version of the Bible,
10:48I'm like, I want to know what the message said.
10:50I just want to hear how they wrote it out.
10:51And when I read it,
10:52it absolutely touched me.
10:54Psalms 13, 1 and 2 from the Message Bible says,
10:57Long enough, God.
10:58You've ignored me long enough.
11:00I've looked at the back of your head long enough.
11:02Long enough, I've carried this ton of trouble,
11:04lived with a stomach full of pain.
11:06Long enough, my arrogant enemies
11:08have looked down their noses at me.
11:11I'm like, I feel that.
11:14I feel that.
11:18David's eyes were on his earthly problems
11:20instead of the heavenly promises.
11:22Instead of trying to act like everything was okay,
11:26David talked to God with honesty.
11:28He told God exactly how frustrated he was,
11:30and he told God that he didn't understand.
11:32These whole two,
11:33this first two verses
11:35is David going to God and saying,
11:37I've got to talk to you about my heart.
11:40I've got to tell you what's going on in here.
11:45I'm angry.
11:46I'm frustrated.
11:47I'm confused.
11:52I don't get it.
11:53What have I not done
11:54that you've asked me to do to this point?
11:55What have I not done
11:56to honor you at this point?
11:58And I feel like you're ignoring me.
12:00I feel like you don't even see me.
12:05I'm like, yeah,
12:06I hear you, David.
12:07I feel you.
12:10Frustration was winning the war in David's heart,
12:12but David still knew who had the answers.
12:16Believe it or not,
12:17some people actually think
12:18that this is the wrong way
12:20to express your emotions.
12:23Some commentators I read
12:25actually said that David did the wrong thing
12:27by talking to God this way.
12:30How can you talk to God that way?
12:31I mean, David actually wrote down
12:34that he felt like God was ignoring him.
12:36I mean, the disrespect.
12:38No, David was being honest.
12:40David was showing God his true heart.
12:42The heart that God already saw.
12:44The heart that God already knew was there.
12:46It's not like God was surprised.
12:49He saw what was going on.
12:51He knew what David was thinking.
12:52He knew what David was feeling.
12:55He needed David to tell him the truth.
12:58David needed to tell God the truth.
13:02If we're honest with ourselves,
13:04we should acknowledge that we all get there
13:05at one point or time
13:07in another in our walks.
13:09Life keeps just kicking us
13:11and knocking us down.
13:13We still believe in God,
13:14but because of the pain
13:16that's going on in our life,
13:17we lose focus.
13:19Hank Smith said,
13:21being sad, disappointed, angry,
13:23or discouraged with life
13:25is not a sign that you lack faith in God.
13:28Faithfulness doesn't require you
13:29to pretend you don't feel human emotion.
13:31Faithfulness invites you to turn
13:33to the one who understands
13:34all human emotion.
13:41David had to vent.
13:42David had to release.
13:44David had to tell God
13:45exactly how he felt,
13:46otherwise he wasn't going to get
13:47to the next part.
13:52I'm a volcano, personally.
13:54I don't vent.
13:55I store it up until enough pressure happens
13:58that boom.
14:02David vented.
14:04God, this is exactly what's going on.
14:06This is exactly why I'm in pain.
14:08Do you hear me?
14:10David then shifts
14:11to the second part of the psalm.
14:13After he's let go of that pressure,
14:14after he's released that pain
14:16a little bit
14:17and given it to God,
14:18after he took these first two verses
14:20and he put them on a planet
14:22and said,
14:23God, this is exactly
14:24what I'm going through.
14:27After he did that
14:28and God could take that pain
14:29from David,
14:30then David was able
14:31to go to the second part
14:32of the psalm.
14:33The next two verses,
14:34he goes from
14:34a one-sided conversation
14:36of despair
14:36to an attitude of prayer.
14:40Psalms 13, 3 and 4 says,
14:41Consider and answer me,
14:42O Lord my God.
14:44Light up my eyes
14:44lest I sleep the sleep of death.
14:46Lest my enemies say
14:47I have prevailed over him.
14:49Lest my foes rejoice
14:50because I am shaken.
14:51David makes two requests
14:54in these two verses.
14:58He's let God know
14:59how he feels,
14:59now he makes two requests.
15:01The first thing
15:02that I want to point out
15:03before we go to these requests
15:04is the first part
15:06of this verse.
15:07He says,
15:08Hear and answer me,
15:10O Lord my God.
15:12He's frustrated,
15:13he's angry,
15:15he's going through
15:17that time in his life,
15:18but he still takes
15:18the time to say,
15:19but make no mistake,
15:20I recognize the fact
15:21that no matter what,
15:23you're still my Lord
15:23and my God.
15:26The first request
15:27David makes
15:28is he makes requests
15:30for consider and answer me.
15:37At this point,
15:37David knows
15:38that God understands
15:40what's going on.
15:41At this point,
15:42David knows that God knows
15:43what his heart's going through
15:44and David says,
15:45Okay,
15:45I've told you how I feel.
15:47I told you what's going on.
15:49Now please consider
15:50what I'm going through
15:51and tell me what to do about it.
15:53Consider what I'm feeling right now
15:55and tell me what I'm supposed to do
15:56to get past it.
15:58This is something
15:59that I can't do on my own.
16:00This is something
16:01that I can't get past.
16:02This is,
16:03it's a rollercoaster ride.
16:05He said,
16:05I just can't do it.
16:06I can't climb out
16:06of this pit I'm in.
16:07So please,
16:08consider what I'm telling you
16:10and then please give me answers
16:11on what to do next.
16:13I need that.
16:14The second point David asks for,
16:18the second request he makes
16:19is that God would light up his eyes.
16:24David's eyes were dark
16:25and they were clouded with the pain
16:27that he was going through.
16:30This happens.
16:31This is,
16:31this is,
16:32this is,
16:32this is something that,
16:33that I,
16:34you know,
16:34when,
16:35when,
16:35when I'm going through something,
16:36when I'm dealing with stuff,
16:37it's so hard for me to see past it
16:39because all I can focus on
16:41is that pain
16:41that's right in front of my face.
16:43And it clouds your eyes.
16:45It makes your eyes dark.
16:47Instead of seeing the light
16:49that God gives you,
16:50instead of seeing,
16:51uh,
16:51the,
16:52the,
16:52the wondrous,
16:53just,
16:53just amazing things
16:55that God can do for you.
16:56All we can see
16:57is that pain
16:58that's right in front of our eyes.
16:59That's where David's at.
17:00But instead of saying,
17:02I can't see you,
17:03what am I supposed to do?
17:03He says,
17:04give me light.
17:07You know,
17:07that cloud that's covering me,
17:09you know,
17:09that pain,
17:09give me the light
17:10that only you can give me.
17:12Psalms 36 verses 8 and 9 says,
17:16they feast on the abundance
17:17of your house
17:18and you give them drink
17:19from the river of your delights.
17:20For with you
17:22is the fountain of life.
17:23In your light,
17:25do we see light?
17:27There's only one way
17:28David's getting clarity here
17:30and that's if God
17:30gives him the light to do it.
17:32And David knows that
17:33and that's what David asks for.
17:38David lost his cool,
17:39he vented,
17:39he needed to talk to God
17:41and he needed to tell God
17:42what he was going through.
17:43And now he was asking for comfort
17:44and he was asking for wisdom.
17:47David knew that his heavenly father
17:48knew him
17:48and understood him
17:49better than anyone
17:50and he knew that his father
17:52loved him.
17:54I already told her
17:55I wasn't going to give her five bucks
17:56but I'm mentioning it again.
17:59Teresa put a post online
18:00about a month ago.
18:02I don't know.
18:03It's one of those posts
18:04you see online
18:05and you're like,
18:05oh, snapshot,
18:06I need that one.
18:08And this post said,
18:09why do you always lift up
18:10your hands during worship?
18:12Because that's what children do
18:14when they want to be held
18:15by their father.
18:19If you're a parent,
18:21you know what I'm talking about, right?
18:23Emma, when she was little,
18:24she was attached to the hip.
18:27Everywhere I went,
18:28she was there.
18:30When she wanted it,
18:31she looked up at me
18:31and that's what she did.
18:33And I knew what she needed.
18:34She needed comfort.
18:35She needed me to hold her.
18:38When we get to this point
18:39in our life,
18:40we look at our father
18:41and we say,
18:42I need you.
18:43I need you to hold me.
18:44I need you to pick me up.
18:45I need you to comfort me.
18:46I need you to let me know
18:47everything's going to be okay.
18:50Because right now,
18:50I just don't feel it.
18:53All I fear is this fear
18:55or all I feel is this fear
18:57or pain or resentment
18:58or whatever's going through
18:59my mind right now
19:00and going through my heart
19:01and it scares me
19:02and I don't like it.
19:03But I know that if you pick me up,
19:05I know that if you hold me
19:06in your arms like only you can,
19:08that everything's going to be okay.
19:12Because that's what our father
19:13does for us.
19:17Now, after four verses
19:20of pouring out his heart,
19:21asking for help,
19:22asking for wisdom,
19:24David's heart has finally found
19:25the peace that it desires.
19:27He's finally at the point
19:29that he can see the real God.
19:30Not the God that he thought
19:31forgot about him.
19:32Not the God that he thought
19:33didn't care.
19:34The real God that loves
19:35his children,
19:37who keeps his promises.
19:39And with that in his mind,
19:40David writes the third part
19:41of his prayer.
19:44Psalms 13, 5, and 6 says,
19:47But I have trusted
19:47in your steadfast love.
19:49My heart shall rejoice
19:50in your salvation.
19:51I will sing to the Lord
19:52because he has dealt
19:53bountifully with me.
19:57Even though David is in despair
19:59and questioning,
20:00even if God's paying attention to him,
20:01he sees the bigger picture
20:02of who God is
20:04and who God has been
20:05in his life.
20:06And he writes down
20:07that statement
20:08that eludes a lot of people
20:09in the same spot.
20:10And this is a very important statement.
20:13And that's...
20:15Okay, go one more.
20:18This statement right here.
20:20And yeah, hit it one more time.
20:23But I trust you.
20:26The more you study the Bible,
20:30and I know Pastor Mark
20:30has talked about this too,
20:32the more you study the Bible,
20:34those conjunctions,
20:35and, but, for,
20:37man, they mean a lot.
20:38So if you see something like that,
20:40you better pay attention
20:40to what's going on.
20:41And he says,
20:42a big one here,
20:43he says,
20:44But I have trusted
20:45in your steadfast love.
20:48Man, my life is in ruins right now.
20:51I don't know how I'm going to survive,
20:53but I trust you.
20:54And he says,
20:56I've got to wake up in the morning
20:57and these problems
20:58are probably still going to be here.
20:59But I trust you.
21:03Whenever I feel like I can't wait
21:05and I need to take control
21:06of the situation,
21:07which is all the time for me,
21:09the same verse comes to mind
21:10at Psalms 46.10.
21:12It says,
21:12Be still and know that I am God.
21:14I will be exalted among the nations.
21:16I will be exalted in all the earth.
21:19Be still and know that I am God.
21:26That's a big ask, man.
21:29For me to take a step back
21:31and say,
21:32Okay,
21:33I can't control it.
21:36You're God
21:36and I'm going to trust you
21:38with everything.
21:38That's a big ask.
21:41It's not in my nature.
21:43I've got to control the situation.
21:44I've got to take it.
21:45I've got to fix it.
21:46And I can't.
21:47And when I can't,
21:48I start to lose it.
21:50And he's saying,
21:51Be still and know that I am God.
21:53You kind of see why
21:56I ask how long David took
21:58to write this psalm.
21:59Because David goes from
22:01the first two verses
22:03in total despair,
22:04going,
22:05Woe is me.
22:06Life is terrible.
22:07Nobody likes me.
22:08Everybody hates me.
22:09I'm going to go eat worms.
22:10You know?
22:11I mean, David is just,
22:12he's losing it over here.
22:15All the way
22:16to two verses later,
22:17he's going,
22:18No matter what,
22:18I'm going to worship you.
22:19You're God.
22:20I love you.
22:21I worship you.
22:22I honor you.
22:24I'm like,
22:24This must have taken a week, bro.
22:27Like, there is no way
22:28you sat down
22:28and wrote this out.
22:32Six verses.
22:33It takes us a minute
22:34to read the whole thing.
22:35And he goes from,
22:37Woe is me,
22:37to praise the Lord.
22:39It's amazing.
22:41But it's such a great example
22:42of what we should be.
22:44How we should see things.
22:45How we should do things.
22:48We need to see the big picture.
22:49We need to trust God.
22:51And that's what David realized.
22:54And then David went from
22:55an attitude of dismay
22:56to one of worship.
22:57He was able to let go
22:58and he was able to
23:01allow his faith
23:02to take over.
23:05See,
23:05David was promised by God
23:06that he'd be the next king
23:07of Israel.
23:09And I met with Pastor Mark
23:10on Thursday
23:11like we normally do
23:11and Pastor Mark
23:12said something to me
23:13that I like to call
23:15a duh statement.
23:16You know,
23:16like one of those,
23:17Oh, I should know that.
23:19You know,
23:19how did I study the Bible
23:20and not figure out,
23:21you know,
23:22doesn't take Columbo
23:22type thing.
23:23But it's something
23:23I never really thought about.
23:25And Pastor Mark said,
23:26David was never
23:26in any jeopardy of dying.
23:30When he was fighting
23:30those battles,
23:31you know,
23:32killing his tens of thousands,
23:33he wasn't going to die.
23:34When he was fighting Goliath,
23:35he wasn't in any jeopardy
23:36of dying.
23:38And it's not that
23:39he was Superman.
23:39It's not that he was invincible.
23:41It's not like things were going to,
23:42you know,
23:42bullets would bounce off him.
23:44But God made him a promise.
23:45God looked at him and said,
23:46you're going to be
23:47the next king of Israel.
23:48I've anointed you.
23:49I've chosen you.
23:50Saul's out.
23:51His family's out.
23:53They're going to die.
23:53You're going to take over
23:54as king.
23:55What that meant
23:55was God promised him.
23:57And if David died,
23:58God's a liar
23:59and God's not a liar.
24:03And you go,
24:04well, yeah.
24:07Yeah, he's not.
24:08David, what are you thinking?
24:10You killed Goliath.
24:11You killed all those people.
24:12You know what's going on.
24:14You've been anointed the king.
24:16How did you miss this?
24:19And I go,
24:21well, I'm a Christian.
24:22And you know what?
24:22I've been promised too.
24:24God promises me something.
24:26In fact,
24:26God promised in Hebrews 13.5,
24:28he says,
24:28keep your life free
24:29from the love of money
24:30and be content
24:31with what you have.
24:32For he has said,
24:33I will never leave you
24:34nor forsake you.
24:36God promised me
24:37that he will never leave me
24:39or forsake me.
24:40God said,
24:40no matter what's going on
24:41in your life,
24:42no matter what you're dealing with,
24:43no matter how bad
24:45your heart's hurting,
24:45no matter how heavy
24:46your soul feels,
24:47I'm always there.
24:49Every time you lift your arms,
24:50I'm going to pick you up.
24:52I'm going to hold you.
24:53I'm going to let you know
24:54that I'm there.
24:56Every single time.
24:58I've promised you.
24:59Every time.
25:04And I sit there and go,
25:06you look at David
25:08and David was promised
25:08he was going to be
25:09the king of Israel
25:10and David wasn't going to die,
25:11right?
25:11So what's he worried about?
25:13What's he worried about?
25:13That Saul's coming after him.
25:14He should have just been like,
25:15oh, Saul,
25:16your dad wants to kill me?
25:18Okay.
25:20Good luck, you know?
25:21I mean,
25:21it's not going to happen.
25:22But he didn't.
25:23He honored God
25:24and he continued to honor God.
25:25And throughout his life,
25:28he continued to honor God.
25:29And I sit there and go,
25:30I can't judge him
25:30because I know that God's promised me.
25:32I know that God said,
25:33I'll never leave you.
25:34I'll never forsake you.
25:35I'm always going to be there for you.
25:36I'm always going to walk you through
25:38when you need it.
25:38I'm always going to hold your hand
25:40and carry you.
25:41I'll always be there for you.
25:42He promised me.
25:43Yet as soon as things get bad,
25:45as soon as life turns into a roller coaster,
25:47it's like happy, sad, happy, sad.
25:49And when we get down there,
25:50as soon as we get down in that lull,
25:52I go, oh man, life is over.
25:55I don't go to God
25:58and I don't say,
26:00man, I need you.
26:01I'm struggling.
26:02I'm losing it.
26:03I don't know what I'm going to do.
26:04I don't know how I'm going to make tomorrow.
26:06I'm at that point
26:07where I'm at the end of my rope
26:10and I don't have anything to hold on to.
26:14And if I talk to God
26:15and if I go to God
26:16and if I spend time with God
26:18and I pray to God like David did,
26:19God said,
26:20you do have something to hold on to.
26:22Hold on to me.
26:23And I can't do it
26:24because all I see
26:26is what's in front of me.
26:31If you feel alone,
26:33Satan wants you to feel alone.
26:36If you're in pain,
26:37Satan wants you to know
26:38that you're in pain.
26:39If you feel doubt,
26:40Satan wants you to have that doubt.
26:42None of those things come from God.
26:44All that stuff that's holding you back,
26:46that doesn't come from God.
26:47God doesn't give us those things.
26:49God doesn't share those things with us.
26:51Oh, here's an alone feeling.
26:52Have a nice day.
26:53No, that's not how that works.
26:55Satan wants us separate from God.
26:57Satan wants us away from God
26:59because when we're away from God,
27:00Satan thinks,
27:01now's when I can get him.
27:05I'm going to let you in on a little secret.
27:08That day that I had such a rough day,
27:11after I read Psalms 13 at least 13 times,
27:15after I shed a tear or two,
27:17after I went to God
27:18and I prayed and I talked with God
27:20and I spent that quiet time with God,
27:23after I was done,
27:24you know what?
27:25My soul was lighter.
27:28I didn't feel quite so bad.
27:29I felt like, okay.
27:31But those problems that I had before,
27:32they were still there.
27:34They didn't go away.
27:35It's not like I went to God
27:36and I said,
27:37God, I'm struggling.
27:37God, I'm hurting right now.
27:39God, my soul is heavy right now.
27:40God, I don't know what I'm doing.
27:42God, I feel like I'm losing it.
27:43And God's like,
27:44no problem.
27:44Poof, they're gone.
27:45Now life is grand.
27:50But when I went to God,
27:51when I talked to God,
27:52when I spent time with God,
27:53when I told God how I was feeling,
27:55when I was honest with God,
27:57God said,
27:58I'll walk you through it.
28:03David was still chased by Saul.
28:06It's not like Saul stopped chasing him after this.
28:08This was the first part of Saul's going after David.
28:14Saul kept going after David.
28:15Time after time.
28:17And David kept honoring God.
28:20And God kept honoring David.
28:24This is not a one-time fix-all type of thing.
28:26This is something that we have to do
28:28to remind ourselves on a daily basis,
28:31if not an hourly basis.
28:34There will be times where we feel like David felt.
28:38If for some reason you're sitting here
28:40and you're saying,
28:40I'm a believer in Andy,
28:41I got to tell you,
28:42I have never had a downtime in my entire life.
28:45I would love to talk to you afterwards.
28:50Sometimes it feels like it's life's goal
28:52just to kick us when we're down.
28:55But David gave us three things here
28:58that if we do them on a daily basis,
29:01will get us through
29:02no matter what is going on in our lives.
29:04The first thing he did
29:05was David was honest with God.
29:07You have to be honest with God.
29:11You have to be honest with God.
29:13He wants you to be honest with him.
29:15He wants you to tell him what's going on.
29:19Let me remind you,
29:20he already knows what's going on.
29:25He's here and he's here.
29:27So you can't hide anything from him.
29:28So if you're dealing with something
29:30and you go to God and you're like,
29:32I'm good.
29:33Life is grand.
29:34No, it's not.
29:39Tell him.
29:40Be honest with him.
29:41Say, God, I'm struggling.
29:42God, David flat out said,
29:44I feel like you're ignoring me.
29:48Did you turn away from me?
29:50Like, well, what's going on?
29:51Do you not see what I'm going through?
29:53Be honest with God.
29:55Tell God exactly what's going on in your life.
29:57The second thing he did was
30:00David asked for what he really needed.
30:05Only ask for what you truly need.
30:06David said,
30:07I told you what's going on.
30:09So what I'm asking for now
30:10is I'm asking for answers
30:12and I'm asking for counsel.
30:13Just talk to me.
30:14Tell me what's going on.
30:16Give me something to hold on to.
30:20You have to.
30:22You have to.
30:22Don't go say,
30:23you know,
30:24God, that guy at work,
30:26he's really bothering me.
30:27I'd really like it
30:27if you hit him with a bus.
30:28I mean, come on.
30:30That's not what you need to do.
30:32Tell him what you really need.
30:35Maybe it's just,
30:36God, I'm struggling
30:37and this is why I'm struggling
30:38and quite frankly,
30:39what I really need
30:40is I just need you
30:41to pick me up
30:41and hold me
30:42just for a little bit.
30:44Just tell me
30:45it's going to be okay.
30:48The third thing he did
30:49was he worshipped
30:50no matter what the outcome
30:52was going to be.
30:57Can you worship
30:58no matter what
30:58the outcome's going to be?
31:02I found out
31:02that it's really easy
31:03for me to vent
31:04to God, you know.
31:06It's really easy
31:07for me to explain
31:08why I'm upset.
31:10Go figure.
31:14And quite frankly,
31:15it's easy for me
31:15to ask,
31:16okay, so this is
31:17what I need.
31:18You know,
31:18this is what I need
31:20from you.
31:20This is what's going on
31:22in my life.
31:25But can you worship
31:26no matter what
31:26the outcome is?
31:27When you go to God
31:29and you tell God
31:29what's going on
31:30and God gives you
31:32that comfort,
31:33are you going to be able
31:33to say,
31:34yeah, life is still,
31:35life is still just,
31:37it's a mess,
31:38but I'm going to worship
31:39you no matter what.
31:42Because that's what
31:42David did.
31:43David said,
31:44life didn't get better,
31:45I'm still on the run.
31:47But you lightened
31:48my heart,
31:50you listened to me,
31:51and I'm going to
31:52worship you
31:52because you're worth it.
31:56If you can do
31:57all those things
31:58when you feel like
31:58your soul can't take
31:59anymore,
32:00I'm going to make
32:01you a promise.
32:03Okay, I'll promise you.
32:05You do these three things
32:06every day.
32:07You do them.
32:08You go to God
32:09and you're honest
32:09with God.
32:10You ask God
32:11for what you need,
32:12what you truly need,
32:13and if you worship Him
32:14no matter what,
32:15I'm going to make
32:16you a promise.
32:16And that promise
32:17is no matter what,
32:18God's going to show up
32:19every time.
32:19every time.
32:23It might not be
32:24the way you expect,
32:25and it might not be
32:26the way you want,
32:27but every time
32:28He'll show up
32:29the way you need it.
32:31Every time.
32:36And He's going to
32:36walk you through it,
32:37and He's going to
32:38pick you up,
32:39and He's going to
32:40comfort you,
32:40and He's going to
32:40hold you,
32:41and He's going to
32:41say I love you,
32:42and we'll get
32:42through it together.
32:43David needed God
32:47that day.
32:48I needed God
32:49that day.
32:51Just like God said,
32:53He was there for me.
32:55He'll never leave me,
32:56and He'll never forsake me.
