00:00So, we can say it all started in a garden.
00:06And when everything is done and finished, it will end up in an eternal garden.
00:13Right now, today, there is a garden that's right in between that.
00:19The garden of Adam and Eve, the garden of eternity with God's glory,
00:25and today we come to a garden called Gethsemane.
00:30A great battle was fought in the Garden of Eden.
00:33Would they obey God? Would they not obey God?
00:35The temptation coming from the evil one.
00:37And there is a great battle that takes place today in the Garden of Gethsemane as well.
00:43The humanness, the Son of Man, of course, Jesus is both God and man.
00:47The Son of Man is being tempted because of the overwhelming agony
00:55that what's about to come across Him.
01:00It is a battle.
01:02And as Ed Vasek said, it's in a sense two battles.
01:05A battle in the Garden of Eden and a battle here in the Garden of Gethsemane.
01:11He said,
01:12In the Garden of Gethsemane, Adam chose to disobey God, bringing sin to the human race.
01:18He did not resist temptation, but chose His will over the Father's.
01:23In the Garden of Gethsemane, the second Adam, Jesus Christ, chose the Father's will over His own human will.
01:30Although the spiritual pain and misery that would come of the cross that was awaiting Him,
01:37it seemed as though the internal battle was fought in the Garden, the Garden of Gethsemane.
01:43Just as Adam's decision in Eden affected all who are related to Adam,
01:47that's all of Adam's race, you and I,
01:49so Christ's decision in Gethsemane affects all who are related to Him by faith.
01:56Jesus, as both God and man, had a sinless human nature and a divine nature.
02:00He had a human will and a divine will that worked in harmony.
02:04In Gethsemane, we get the clearest picture of how He submitted His human will to the will of the Father.
02:11The agony of the cross that was coming His way,
02:18the agony of the cross, of being made sin to become the sin bearer,
02:23causes deep sorrow in Jesus.
02:27It compels Him to ask the Father whether this cup could pass from,
02:30if there was another way that we could bring salvation to the world other than the cross.
02:34And today, you and I, we are invited into His suffering.
02:45We see His anguish.
02:49We hear His cries.
02:53We experience His struggles.
02:57And we honor His obedience.
02:59The Son of Man now enters His passion.
03:07I don't know if we really comprehend everything that Jesus went through on our behalf.
03:14We know He suffered.
03:15We know the cross.
03:16We all know about the crucifixion.
03:17We know the painful cross and what that means.
03:21But to become the sin bearer of the world
03:25and to take upon Him the sins
03:28and make redemption for sin in this world
03:32that the wrath of God would be poured out upon Him,
03:37the perfect Son who had never sinned.
03:41And yet God's wrath will now be poured out upon Him on the cross
03:44because of us.
03:47I don't think we understand this agony that He went through.
03:50In Matthew chapter 26, we have this.
03:59The Holy Spirit records it for us.
04:01In three of the Gospels, we have it written.
04:02John doesn't talk about this.
04:03He talks about the arrest, not about this praying in the garden.
04:07But the three biblical writers talk
04:10and they let us come into His suffering
04:12and invite us in to share this with Him
04:14and feel it with Him.
04:15In Matthew 26, we begin reading in verse number 36.
04:20Open up your Bibles, turn on your biblical device.
04:23This is God's Word.
04:24We want to look at it together.
04:27He's washed the disciples' feet
04:29on the night before His crucifixion.
04:32They have celebrated the Passover meal,
04:35instituting the Lord's Supper.
04:36He's taught them about the Holy Spirit.
04:38That's which He is going to come after His resurrection.
04:41He's talked about His high priestly prayer in John 17
04:46where He prays to the Father and says,
04:48now it's time.
04:50And now they have moved away from that Jerusalem area
04:54and they're moving away to Gethsemane.
04:59Look at verse number 36.
05:00Then Jesus went with them to a place called Gethsemane
05:05and He said to His disciples,
05:08sit here while I go over there and pray.
05:12And one of the writers said about a stone's throw away.
05:16And taking with Him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee,
05:19that's James and John,
05:20so Peter, James, and John,
05:21same as the one on Mount Transfiguration,
05:24he began to be sorrowful and troubled.
05:27Then He said to them,
05:30my soul is very sorrowful even to death.
05:34Remain here and watch with me.
05:37And some translations are some of the other variations
05:39of the text is watch and pray.
05:42Watch with me here.
05:45So He moves from Jerusalem through the Kidron Valley
05:50eastward up to the Mount of Olives
05:52to a garden called Gethsemane.
05:55And Gethsemane simply means an oil press.
05:59That's where they took the olive oils.
06:00There's a huge garden of olive trees there.
06:02We saw some trees that could have been as old as Jesus.
06:05Very old trees in the garden of Gethsemane.
06:07But it was a garden of olives
06:09and they would take the olives
06:11and they would press them.
06:12And you can imagine the force,
06:14the external force coming upon the olives
06:16as they squeeze them out for the oil to drain out.
06:19It is an oil press is the idea.
06:21And here in Gethsemane, which is called oil press,
06:25we see Jesus being pressed like olives
06:28with an external force on top of Him
06:31pushing Him down, awaiting upon Him.
06:35And what flows out of Him is not olive oil,
06:38but grace.
06:39It was His custom to pray here.
06:43He would come here often.
06:44In fact, when Judas was going to betray Him,
06:46He knew exactly where they were going to be
06:48because they would go there often.
06:50In fact, in Luke 22, Luke tells us,
06:52and He came out and went,
06:54as was His custom,
06:56to the Mount of Olives.
06:57And the disciples followed Him.
06:59So it was a place that He always went to.
07:01It must have been a nice place,
07:02a quiet place where He could go and pray.
07:05So He's there.
07:07He leaves the other eight disciples.
07:10Remember, Judas is gone at this point.
07:12Eight plus three is 11.
07:13So Judas is gone.
07:14Leaves the other eight,
07:15takes the three and goes with them
07:16a distance away to pray
07:18and tells them to watch with Him.
07:22He becomes sorrowful, the text says.
07:24Sorrowful, even to death.
07:27It's the idea of experiencing grief
07:30or deep sorrow,
07:31opposite of joy and happiness.
07:33And it was something
07:35that was being pressed upon Him.
07:37He was experiencing this
07:38from this force outside
07:39that's pushing upon Him.
07:42It was so deep,
07:43it could actually kill.
07:45It was that deep.
07:45I don't think any of us under,
07:46we've experienced sorrow before
07:48and grief.
07:49All of us have.
07:50In one form or another,
07:51loss of a loved one,
07:52loss of a pet.
07:52We understand what it means
07:53to lose something
07:54and the grief that's associated with that.
07:56But I don't think any of us
07:57have ever experienced a grief
07:58so deep it could kill us,
08:01is the idea.
08:02Crushed with anguish
08:05is another way of saying it.
08:07So you could see Him
08:08in the garden praying
08:09and He's got this external force
08:10oppressed upon Him.
08:11It's causing Him anguish.
08:13And what is this external force?
08:14It is the salvation of mankind
08:16and the idea of becoming
08:18the sin bearer of mankind
08:20is pressing upon Him.
08:23He knows what it means.
08:25He understands it.
08:29Psalm 42, the writer talks about
08:31this crushing of soul.
08:32He said,
08:33Why are you cast down,
08:34O my soul?
08:35And why are you in turmoil within me?
08:38Hope in God,
08:39for I shall again praise Him,
08:40my salvation.
08:41This is the idea of
08:42why are you cast down,
08:43O my soul?
08:43Why are you in anguish within me?
08:45It's this deep sorrow,
08:47this grief.
08:49His soul is exceedingly sorrowful,
08:51is the idea.
08:52As B.B. Warfell puts it,
08:56In these supreme moments,
08:58our Lord sounded the ultimate depths
09:00of human anguish
09:02and vindicated on the score
09:04of the intensity
09:05of His mental sufferings
09:07the right to the title
09:08Man of Sorrows.
09:11He is a man of sorrows.
09:13Isaiah the prophet said
09:14He would be a man of sorrows.
09:18Jesus knows that His arrest is near.
09:21He knows it's about the hour to come
09:23that He becomes the great sin bearer.
09:28He would experience God's wrath upon Him.
09:31The Father and the Son
09:32have been one for all of eternity.
09:34One in essence.
09:35One God.
09:37There's never been a breach
09:38in the Godhead at all.
09:39There's never been this idea
09:40that the wrath of the Father
09:42would be poured out on the Son.
09:44Never in all of history
09:45did that ever occur.
09:46And the forgiveness of sins
09:50would come at an incomprehensible cost to Jesus.
09:55It's not something like,
09:56oh, I'll just go pay a debt.
09:57Oh yeah, it's just a small law.
09:58I'll just write a check.
09:59No.
09:59It comes at an incomprehensible cost to Him.
10:04Jesus knows that it is the Father's will
10:06that He face death alone.
10:08He would become the sacrifice for our sins.
10:16He would become our Passover lamb.
10:18Remember, this is the time of the Passover.
10:20This is when the Passover sacrifice
10:21has been offered
10:22and the Passover has been celebrated.
10:24And the Passover was God's deliverance
10:26of Israel from Egypt,
10:27from the bondage of the slavery of Egypt.
10:31But He would face this alone.
10:35Do you remember the cry on the cross
10:37in Matthew 27?
10:38Remember this cry?
10:40In about the ninth hour,
10:42Jesus cried out with a loud voice
10:45saying,
10:46Eli, Eli, lama shabachthanai?
10:51That is my God, my God,
10:54why have you forsaken me?
10:56He has never experienced that
10:57in all of eternity.
10:59The Son of God,
11:00one with the Father of one essence,
11:02now being forsaken by His Father.
11:07So He tells them to watch.
11:10He knows what's coming.
11:11He tells them to watch.
11:13Watch and pray.
11:14Pay attention.
11:17Be with me in my suffering.
11:20It's a present word.
11:21It's something they're supposed
11:22to do all the time.
11:23Watch.
11:23Watch and pray.
11:25Pay attention.
11:28It was important that they
11:29identified with the suffering,
11:32that they understood
11:33what He was going through.
11:34and what do we read in the text
11:36that they fall asleep?
11:38They can't stay awake.
11:41You would think,
11:42oh, that's just, you know,
11:43watch, that's still okay,
11:44just, that's nice.
11:45Watch me and as I pray,
11:47enter, watch, just,
11:48but it's more than that.
11:50It's more than just watching.
11:52I was telling Teresa,
11:53I think it was yesterday,
11:54the day before is,
11:55I got saved in 1983.
11:57All right?
11:57You can do the math.
11:58All right?
12:00Got the math?
12:00All right.
12:01Good.
12:01I love it when I learn
12:04something new.
12:06I've been in the faith a long time.
12:07I've studied the word.
12:09I haven't preached from
12:10every book of the Bible.
12:11I don't think,
12:11well, probably I have,
12:13but something came across
12:14this week that I did not know,
12:16and it makes all the difference
12:18in the world, actually,
12:18to this text, in my opinion.
12:21He's telling them to watch.
12:24Watch.
12:25Well, what the watching
12:27reminds us of,
12:28it reminds us of
12:29the original Passover,
12:31when the children of Israel
12:33were waiting to be delivered
12:34out of Egypt.
12:36If you remember,
12:37they had all of the plagues,
12:38and the last plague
12:38was the death of the firstborn,
12:40and you remember what God told them,
12:41select a lamb.
12:43On the 10th day of the month,
12:44you would select this lamb.
12:46On the 14th day of the month,
12:47you would sacrifice this lamb.
12:48You would then eat the lamb
12:50between the evenings.
12:51That's the idea between the evenings,
12:53that sunset between the evenings.
12:54You would eat the lamb,
12:55all of it.
12:56Make sure you consumed all of it.
12:58But while they were eating the lamb,
13:01they were to put their shoes
13:02on their feet,
13:03their sandals on their feet,
13:04put the belt around their waist,
13:06and have the staff in their hand.
13:07Why?
13:08They were waiting
13:09for God's deliverance.
13:14They were waiting
13:15to be set free.
13:19They were waiting
13:20to come out of bondage.
13:22When he tells them to watch,
13:24it's like the Passover night,
13:25that night.
13:26They were supposed to watch
13:27and realize God's deliverance
13:30is coming.
13:32Watch.
13:33Comes out of Exodus chapter 12.
13:36Exodus,
13:36the first part of 12,
13:37is the Passover.
13:37Now they've celebrated
13:39the Passover,
13:39and God wants this
13:40as a memorial for Israel
13:41for all generations
13:42to remember God's
13:44great deliverance.
13:45Watch.
13:47It was a night of watching
13:48by the Lord.
13:49So the Lord is watching
13:49to bring them out
13:51of the land of Egypt.
13:52So this same night
13:54is a night of watching
13:55being kept to the Lord
13:56by all the people of Israel
13:58throughout their generations.
14:02What are they watching for?
14:03They're watching
14:03for God's deliverance.
14:05What should have Peter,
14:06James, and John
14:07been watching for?
14:08God's deliverance.
14:10But instead,
14:11they're sleeping.
14:14They can't keep awake.
14:17They can't see
14:18what's going on.
14:18They can't realize
14:19that God is about ready
14:20to deliver
14:21all who will believe
14:22in the Son.
14:25Keep awake
14:26so you can see
14:26what God is going to do.
14:28Nah.
14:30They sleep.
14:33Jesus then opens up
14:35his heart
14:35to the Father
14:36in prayer.
14:38Look at verse number 39.
14:41And going a little farther,
14:43he fell on his face
14:44and prayed,
14:45saying,
14:45My Father,
14:47if it be possible,
14:50let this cup
14:51pass from me.
14:53In other words,
14:53pass over me.
14:54Don't cut.
14:55Let it fall on me.
14:57Nevertheless,
14:58not as I will,
14:58but as you will.
15:02And he came to his disciples
15:03and found them sleeping.
15:04And he said to Peter,
15:06So,
15:06could you not
15:07watch with me
15:08one hour?
15:11Watch and pray
15:12that you may not
15:12enter into temptation.
15:13The Spirit indeed
15:15is willing,
15:15but the flesh
15:16is weak.
15:18Again,
15:18for the second time
15:19he went away
15:19and prayed.
15:21Notice the prayer
15:22is a little bit
15:22different this time.
15:23My Father,
15:24if this cannot pass
15:25unless I drink it,
15:27your will be done.
15:28You can see him already.
15:29The human will
15:31bending to the will
15:32of the Father.
15:34If it cannot pass
15:36unless I drink it,
15:37your will be done.
15:38And again he came
15:39and found them sleeping
15:40for their eyes
15:41were heavy.
15:42So leaving them again
15:43he went away
15:44and prayed
15:45for the third time
15:46saying the same words
15:48again.
15:50He's praying.
15:51He's pouring out
15:52his heart to the Father.
15:53Can this cup
15:54pass from me?
15:56I want your will
15:57to be done.
15:57Yes,
15:57is there any other way
15:58that salvation
15:59could be paid for
16:00that I don't have
16:01to become the sin bearer?
16:03I don't have to be
16:04treated as a criminal
16:05and crucified
16:06on a cross
16:07and cursed by you,
16:08God?
16:09Is there another way?
16:12Actually the writer
16:13of Hebrews
16:13describes this scene.
16:15You would think
16:15the writer of Hebrews,
16:16this is a gospel?
16:17Yeah,
16:17the writer of Hebrews
16:18describes this very scene
16:19in Hebrews chapter 5 verse 7.
16:22The writer says,
16:23In the days of his flesh
16:24Jesus offered up
16:25prayers and supplications
16:27with loud cries
16:29and tears
16:29to him who was able
16:31to save him from death.
16:33And he was heard
16:34because of his reverence.
16:36And you say,
16:37wait a second,
16:38save him from death?
16:39But he died.
16:40But he died.
16:42How could God
16:43save him from death?
16:44It's because the Father
16:45raised him from the dead
16:46where death no longer
16:48would have a hold on him.
16:49God heard his prayer
16:50and raised him
16:51from the dead.
16:56So he prays on his face.
16:59Says he fell on his face.
17:01Now you and I
17:01have seen those pictures
17:02of Jesus praying
17:03in the garden.
17:04He's on his knees.
17:05His elbows are on a rock
17:06and this beam of light
17:07is shining on him.
17:08He looks so serene
17:10as he's praying
17:11to the Father.
17:12That's not what it was like.
17:15It says that he was
17:16prostrate on his face.
17:18He was face down
17:19on the ground
17:19begging the Father
17:21for the cup to pass
17:22but not his will
17:24but the Father's will be done.
17:26It's not this serene
17:28picture of him.
17:28He is in agony here.
17:31Agony of soul.
17:35He was completely prostrate.
17:37He says my Father.
17:39Intimate language.
17:40My Father.
17:43It's so tough
17:44that actually
17:45we are told
17:46in Luke's gospel
17:47that angels came
17:48to minister to him.
17:50In Luke's gospel
17:51we read this.
17:5222.
17:52And there appeared to him
17:53an angel from heaven
17:55strengthening him
17:55in the midst of this.
17:56That's how difficult it was.
17:58It took the strength
17:59of an angel
17:59coming to strengthen him
18:00in the midst of this trial.
18:02And the intensity
18:04of Jesus' prayer
18:05was seen
18:06that his sweat
18:07become like great drops
18:08of blood
18:09that fell from him.
18:11That's intense prayer.
18:13That is intense suffering.
18:15I have prayed
18:16with tears
18:17before you have
18:18as well.
18:19I have never prayed
18:20with great drops
18:21of blood
18:21like sweat
18:22falling from my face
18:23and that's what he did.
18:25Luke records it for us
18:27in verse 44.
18:28And being in agony
18:29again, agony.
18:30He prayed more earnestly
18:32and his sweat
18:33became like great drops
18:34of blood
18:35falling down
18:35to the ground.
18:36And he says,
18:37Father,
18:38if I must drink this cup
18:39I will drink it.
18:41If there is no other way
18:43that mankind
18:43can be redeemed
18:45salvation
18:45and forgiveness
18:46of sins
18:47I will drink this cup.
18:48But what is the cup?
18:49What is this cup?
18:51What is this cup
18:52that he must drink
18:53to the very dregs?
18:54He can't just sip it.
18:55He must drink it
18:56to the very end.
18:57Which cup is this?
18:58The cup is a metaphor
19:00for suffering and death
19:02that Jesus was about
19:03to experience.
19:04It's a picture
19:05of suffering and death.
19:06I will drink the cup
19:07of suffering.
19:07I will drink the cup
19:08of death.
19:10Because there is
19:11no other way.
19:15Jesus now
19:16takes on the guilt
19:17of a criminal
19:17and dies
19:19a criminal's death.
19:21Even though he was
19:22perfectly innocent.
19:24No crime committed.
19:25No sin committed.
19:26But he takes on
19:27a criminal's guilt
19:29and a criminal's death.
19:31It's not just that.
19:34But the cup
19:34also refers to
19:35the wrath of God
19:37against sin.
19:39Which Jesus
19:40the divine sin bearer
19:42will incur.
19:44You and I
19:45we trifle with sin.
19:46Humans
19:47even us Christians
19:48we trifle with sin.
19:49We really think
19:50yeah it's just
19:51a mistake.
19:53It's just
19:53it's not that serious.
19:55If it wasn't
19:57for the protection
19:58of Jesus
19:59the very holiness
20:00of God
20:00would consume
20:01our sinfulness.
20:04His very presence
20:06would consume us
20:07because of sin.
20:08We take sin
20:09so lightly
20:10Jesus understood
20:12that the whole
20:12wrath of almighty
20:14God was going
20:15to fall upon
20:16him
20:16on the cross.
20:17he will become
20:22the sin bearer.
20:24The prophet Isaiah
20:25talked about this
20:26talked about this
20:27cup of wrath.
20:28It's a little bit
20:28different.
20:29This is with Israel
20:30but he's talking
20:30about God's wrath
20:31his cup of wrath.
20:33Wake yourself
20:33wake yourself
20:34stand up
20:35oh Jerusalem
20:35you who have
20:36drunk from the
20:37hand of the Lord
20:38the cup of his wrath
20:40who have drunk
20:41to the dregs
20:42the bowl
20:42the cup of staggering.
20:44Israel was
20:44different than this
20:45no one has ever
20:46suffered like him
20:47in the garden.
20:49No one has ever
20:50drank a cup
20:51like that cup
20:51ever before.
20:54And Jesus said
20:55if it's possible
20:57would you remove it?
21:00All things are
21:00possible with God.
21:01It is possible
21:02he couldn't remove
21:02this cup
21:03but it is not
21:03God's will
21:04to remove this cup.
21:06All things are
21:07possible with God
21:08but it is not
21:08his will to remove
21:09this cup.
21:10Mark 14
21:11he said this
21:11Jesus speaking
21:12Abba
21:13Father
21:13Daddy
21:14Father
21:15all things
21:16are possible
21:17for you.
21:18Remove this
21:18cup for me
21:19yet not what
21:20I will
21:21but what
21:21you will.
21:22In other words
21:23it was possible
21:23for God
21:24to remove
21:24this cup.
21:25He could have
21:25but it wasn't
21:26his will
21:27to remove
21:27the cup.
21:28He was going
21:29to make
21:29the son
21:29drink the
21:30cup
21:30to its
21:30dregs
21:31for you
21:32and for
21:32me.
21:34That we
21:35would have
21:35forgiveness
21:36of sins
21:37that he
21:38would take
21:38our sins
21:39upon his
21:39body.
21:40He would
21:40become
21:40the great
21:41sin bearer.
21:45D.A.
21:46Carson
21:46wrote
21:46in the
21:47first garden
21:48not your
21:49will
21:49but mine
21:50changed
21:51paradise
21:51to desert
21:52and brought
21:53man from
21:53Eden to
21:54Gethsemane.
21:55Now
21:56not my
21:57will
21:57but yours
21:58brings
21:58anguish
21:59to the
21:59man who
21:59prays it
22:00but transforms
22:01the desert
22:02into a
22:02kingdom
22:03and brings
22:03man from
22:04Gethsemane
22:05to the
22:05gates
22:06of glory.
22:07Not my
22:08will but
22:08yours be
22:09done.
22:09I will
22:10drink this
22:10cup.
22:11I will
22:12become the
22:12great
22:12sin bearer.
22:15I will
22:15fulfill your
22:16will father.
22:19He's not
22:19going to let
22:20his personal
22:20preference
22:20conflict with
22:21the divine
22:22will.
22:22No.
22:24His human
22:25side yes his
22:26human side
22:26is in
22:28anguish
22:28because of
22:29this because
22:30he knows
22:31what's going
22:31to happen
22:31to him.
22:32His human
22:32side is in
22:33anguish
22:33because of
22:34this but
22:36he's not
22:36going to
22:36yield his
22:37personal
22:37preferences
22:38to the
22:38I mean
22:39not going
22:39to stand
22:40for his
22:40personal
22:40preference
22:41he's going
22:41to yield
22:41them to
22:42the father.
22:44It could
22:44be said
22:44like this
22:45if the
22:46will of
22:46the father
22:46is to be
22:47done
22:47Jesus
22:47cannot
22:48avoid
22:49death
22:49on a
22:49cross.
22:50He
22:50cannot.
22:54In fact
22:54it is the
22:55divine will
22:55of God
22:56to crush
22:57him.
22:57It sounds
22:58harsh.
23:00Even harsh
23:00to our
23:01that the
23:01father
23:02would crush
23:02the son.
23:03Why?
23:04Like an
23:04oil press
23:05squeeze
23:06him.
23:10the divine
23:11servant
23:11in Isaiah
23:1253.
23:14We read
23:15this.
23:16But he
23:17was pierced
23:18for our
23:19transgressions.
23:21He
23:21was crushed
23:23for our
23:23iniquities.
23:25Upon him
23:26was a
23:27chastisement
23:28that brought
23:29us
23:29peace.
23:31And with
23:32his wounds
23:32we are
23:33healed.
23:34and 10
23:38yet it
23:41was the
23:42will of
23:42the
23:42Lord
23:43to crush
23:44him.
23:46To put
23:46him to
23:47grief.
23:50When his
23:51soul makes
23:51an offering
23:52for guilt
23:52he shall
23:53see his
23:53offering.
23:54He shall
23:54prolong
23:55his days.
23:55The will
23:55of the
23:56Lord
23:56shall
23:56prosper
23:57in his
23:57hands.
23:58It was
23:58God's
23:59will to
23:59crush
24:00the
24:00son
24:00for
24:01from
24:01him
24:02flows
24:02grace
24:03and
24:04forgiveness
24:05and
24:05love.
24:07But without
24:08a crushing
24:08there could
24:09be none.
24:14He was
24:15tempted
24:16in his
24:17humanness
24:17yet
24:19strengthened
24:20to fulfill
24:21the divine
24:22will.
24:23Over the
24:24centuries many
24:25believers have
24:25been arrested
24:26beaten and
24:26killed because
24:27of their
24:27faith.
24:28Yes we
24:29pray for
24:30them every
24:30Sunday.
24:31We know
24:32but only
24:34Jesus
24:35experienced
24:36being made
24:37sin
24:38for us.
24:41That which
24:42is anathema
24:42to God
24:43sin.
24:47He became
24:48a curse
24:49for us.
24:50He was
24:50cursed
24:51for us.
24:53Paul told
24:53the Galatians
24:54Christ
24:54redeemed us
24:55from the
24:55curse of
24:55the law
24:56by becoming
24:56a curse
24:57for us.
24:58For it
24:58is written
24:59curse it
24:59is everyone
25:00who is
25:00hanged on
25:00a tree.
25:01He knows
25:01that.
25:02It's
25:02written
25:03in the
25:03Old
25:03Testament.
25:04He knows
25:04he's
25:05going to
25:05hang on
25:05a tree
25:06and be
25:06cursed
25:06not only
25:08by mankind
25:09generally
25:09speaking
25:10but
25:11crushed
25:12by his
25:12father.
25:17To
25:18accept the
25:18father's
25:18will
25:19shows the
25:19strength
25:20of his
25:20obedience.
25:22It's a
25:23great way
25:23to end
25:23every prayer
25:24isn't it?
25:24Not my
25:25will but
25:25your will
25:25be done.
25:26It's a
25:26great way
25:27to end
25:27a prayer.
25:28He
25:28prayed for
25:29about an
25:29hour we
25:30think.
25:30I mean
25:30it says
25:31about an
25:31hour could
25:31just be
25:32a time
25:32frame.
25:33It could
25:33really be
25:33a full
25:33hour long.
25:35They were
25:35gone
25:35possibly.
25:38And the
25:38question he
25:39asked Peter
25:39was a
25:39rebuke.
25:40Remember
25:41thinking about
25:41the night
25:41of watching
25:42for the
25:42Passover?
25:43He rebuked
25:44them.
25:44The night
25:45of the
25:45Passover
25:45you were
25:46instructed to
25:46watch.
25:47You're not
25:47even watching
25:48tonight.
25:49So he
25:49rebukes
25:50Peter.
25:51They weren't
25:51looking for
25:52God's
25:52deliverance to
25:53come.
25:53They didn't
25:54grasp it.
25:55In fact,
25:55they didn't
25:55even really get
25:56it even on
25:56the day of
25:57the resurrection.
25:57They run
25:58to the
25:58tomb
25:58thinking,
25:59well,
25:59is he
25:59really
25:59raised?
26:00I don't
26:00know if
26:01we believe
26:01the ladies
26:01who told
26:02us he
26:02was.
26:02They didn't
26:03even believe
26:03it then.
26:06And what's
26:07so crazy,
26:08if you think
26:08about it,
26:08Peter and
26:09the other
26:09disciples said,
26:10hey man,
26:10we'll go to
26:11Jerusalem with
26:12you and
26:12we'll die
26:13with you.
26:15They can't
26:16even pray
26:16with him for
26:17an hour.
26:17what the
26:23disciples needed
26:23was spiritual
26:24vigilance
26:25so they
26:27wouldn't be
26:27led into
26:27sin.
26:29The temptation
26:30to sin,
26:31pray and
26:31watch that
26:32you be led
26:32not into
26:33temptation.
26:35Temptation.
26:35Thomas
26:35Kempis said,
26:37first there
26:37comes to the
26:38mind a
26:38bare thought
26:39of evil.
26:39That's the
26:40temptation.
26:41Then a
26:41strong
26:42imagination
26:42thereof,
26:43afterward
26:44delight and
26:45evil motion,
26:46action,
26:47and then
26:47consent.
26:48His advice
26:49was,
26:50withstand the
26:51beginnings.
26:52So when
26:52that evil
26:53thought enters
26:53into the
26:54mind,
26:54grab that
26:55evil thought,
26:56compare it
26:56to the
26:56word of
26:57God and
26:57cast it
26:57out if
26:58it's not
26:58good.
27:00Withstand
27:00the
27:00beginnings,
27:01is what
27:01he says
27:01on
27:02temptation.
27:03For the
27:03spirit is
27:04willing,
27:04that inner
27:05man is
27:05willing,
27:05but the
27:05flesh,
27:06that which
27:06we inherited
27:07from Adam
27:07with sin
27:08and death
27:08is so
27:09weak.
27:10It is
27:10so weak.
27:13Craig
27:14Bloomfield
27:14wrote,
27:15here then
27:15appears the
27:15classic
27:16scriptural
27:16example of
27:17a prayer
27:18that God
27:18does not
27:19answer in
27:19the way
27:20desired by
27:21the one
27:21praying,
27:22yet without
27:23any fault
27:24in the
27:24person making
27:25the request.
27:27You know,
27:27we pray,
27:28we pray,
27:28we pray,
27:29and sometimes we
27:29pray with the
27:30wrong motive,
27:30and of course
27:31then the prayer
27:31is not answered,
27:32but sometimes we
27:32pray with the
27:33right motive.
27:33We have the
27:34right motive,
27:35with the right
27:35understanding,
27:36but God
27:36says no.
27:38And we have
27:39to remember
27:39sometimes it's
27:40not our,
27:40in other words,
27:41there's nothing
27:41wrong with the
27:42way we're
27:42praying.
27:43It's just the
27:43Father,
27:44it's not the
27:44Father's will.
27:45There's nothing
27:46wrong with Jesus,
27:47nothing wrong with
27:47the way that
27:48Jesus prayed.
27:49It just was not
27:49the Father's will.
27:50God did not
27:51answer that
27:51prayer.
27:56Now he comes
27:56back the third
27:57time and they're
27:58still sleeping.
27:59They're still
28:00sleeping.
28:01Look at 45.
28:04Then he came to
28:05the disciples and he
28:06said to them,
28:07sleep and take your
28:08rest later on.
28:09Now it's,
28:10it's a hard,
28:11it's a hard
28:11sentence to
28:12translate.
28:13It can be
28:13translated various
28:14different ways.
28:15Kind of the idea
28:16is you've been
28:18sleeping,
28:18go ahead and
28:18sleep for a
28:19little while
28:19longer and
28:20then there's a
28:21break.
28:24See the hours
28:25at hand and
28:25the Son of
28:26Man is betrayed
28:26into the hands
28:27of sinners.
28:28Then there's
28:28this break,
28:29rise,
28:29let us be
28:30going,
28:30see my
28:30betrayer is
28:31at hand.
28:32So he comes
28:33to them and
28:33sleeping and
28:33says,
28:34okay,
28:34listen,
28:34just rest on
28:35right now because
28:37soon it's about
28:38to get real.
28:39Soon I'm about
28:40to be betrayed.
28:41Soon I'm about
28:42to be brought
28:42into the hands
28:43of sinners.
28:44Soon I'm about
28:44to be crucified.
28:46Soon.
28:46Rest right now.
28:47That's one way
28:48you can look at
28:49it.
28:51And then he
28:51says,
28:52rise,
28:53let's go.
28:54Time's up.
28:55It's time to
28:55get on this now.
28:57So they can't
28:58stay awake.
29:01Part of me
29:01says,
29:02okay,
29:02I get it kind
29:02of a little bit,
29:03okay?
29:04It's late,
29:05it's after
29:05midnight,
29:06all right?
29:06It's after
29:06midnight,
29:07Passover's
29:08between the
29:08evenings,
29:09so six,
29:10seven o'clock
29:10in between
29:10the evenings,
29:11and then
29:12they've done
29:12all their
29:13things,
29:13now they're
29:13out,
29:14it's after
29:14midnight,
29:15they just
29:16ate a
29:17Passover meal.
29:18Do you know
29:18how big
29:18that meal
29:19is?
29:19It's huge,
29:20it's a huge
29:21meal.
29:21And not
29:22only that,
29:22they drank
29:23four cups
29:23of wine.
29:25Now,
29:25granted,
29:25mixed with
29:26water,
29:26true,
29:27wasn't full
29:27strength,
29:28I got that,
29:28but nevertheless,
29:29I can imagine
29:30four glasses
29:30of wine would
29:31make a person
29:31sleepy.
29:32I get it,
29:33I understand,
29:34a full belly
29:34and four glasses
29:35of wine,
29:36you would be
29:37sleepy,
29:37I get that,
29:39that's why
29:39the flesh
29:39is weak,
29:40he says.
29:42I understand
29:42that.
29:44But there
29:45was more
29:45than just
29:46that,
29:46the full
29:46belly and
29:47the four
29:47glasses
29:48of wine,
29:48there's more
29:48than just
29:49that.
29:50Luke tells
29:50us the
29:51disciples were
29:51sleeping
29:52because of
29:52sorrow,
29:54of some
29:54sort of
29:55grief,
29:56that they
29:56understood.
29:57They didn't
29:57get the
29:58full picture,
29:59but they're
29:59sensing
29:59something is
30:00up.
30:01He's talking
30:01about the
30:02spirit that
30:02was going
30:02to come,
30:03he's talking
30:04about going
30:04away and
30:05coming back.
30:06They don't
30:06grasp all
30:07this stuff,
30:08but it
30:08caused them
30:09a grief,
30:10a sadness,
30:11a state of
30:12mental pain
30:13and anxiety.
30:14In Luke
30:1422,
30:15we read it,
30:16and when he
30:16rose from
30:17prayer,
30:17he came to
30:17the disciples
30:18and found
30:19them sleeping
30:19for sorrow.
30:22So they're
30:23just overwhelmed
30:23and they
30:25can't believe
30:26it and they
30:27don't understand
30:28and they're
30:29just kind of
30:29checking out
30:30and they go
30:31to sleep
30:31because they're
30:33grieved.
30:33Jesus said,
30:38you didn't
30:38obey me
30:39when I
30:41asked you
30:41to watch
30:41and pray,
30:42but Jesus
30:44was willing
30:44to obey
30:45even if the
30:46disciples
30:46would not.
30:48Even if
30:49they would
30:49not obey
30:50him,
30:50he was
30:50willing to
30:51obey the
30:51father.
30:51He would
30:52do what
30:52the father
30:52asked him
30:53to do.
30:55That's a
30:56great example
30:57for us,
30:57especially as
30:58our society
30:58gets further
30:59and further
30:59away from
31:00the truth,
31:00that you
31:01and I are
31:01willing to
31:02obey the
31:02father,
31:03regardless of
31:04what anyone
31:05else does
31:05in this
31:05world,
31:07that we
31:07will obey
31:07the father.
31:09It must
31:10be our
31:10firm
31:10commitment.
31:14As I
31:14mentioned,
31:15the Mount
31:16of Olives
31:17is eastward
31:18of Jerusalem
31:19and in
31:19between is
31:20the Kidron
31:21Valley and
31:21so you
31:22would cross
31:22from the
31:23eastern
31:23gate,
31:24if you
31:24went out
31:24the eastern
31:25gate,
31:25you could
31:25go out
31:25the northern
31:26gate,
31:26you could
31:26go out
31:26the eastern
31:27gate,
31:27come down
31:28through the
31:28valley,
31:28the Kidron
31:29Valley,
31:29up the
31:30side of the
31:30Mount
31:30of Olives
31:31to this
31:31garden of
31:32Gethsemane
31:32and when
31:34we were
31:34there,
31:34you could
31:34look down
31:35from the
31:35garden of
31:35Gethsemane,
31:36you could
31:36see the
31:37temple
31:37mound and
31:37you could
31:38see the
31:38Kidron
31:38Valley and
31:39so you
31:40can imagine
31:40that night,
31:41middle of
31:42the night,
31:43that Jesus
31:43is standing
31:44there after
31:44his prayer,
31:45he looks
31:45down and
31:46he sees
31:46the torches
31:47of those
31:48who are
31:48going to
31:49come to
31:49arrest
31:50him and
31:50have him
31:51crucified,
31:51moving from
31:52Jerusalem down
31:53the Kidron
31:53Valley and
31:54up into
31:55the Mount,
31:56Mount
31:56of Olives
31:57and he
31:58could have
31:59ran at
31:59any time,
32:00he could
32:02have
32:02escaped at
32:03any moment
32:03but Jesus
32:07did not
32:07flee when
32:08he had a
32:08chance,
32:09instead he
32:10voluntarily
32:11allowed himself
32:12to be
32:12arrested,
32:13why?
32:13Because his
32:14hour had
32:14come.
32:16When he
32:16turned the
32:17water into
32:17wine, he
32:18said to his
32:18mother, my
32:19hour is not
32:20yet, now his
32:22hour is here.
32:23What is his
32:23hour?
32:23His hour of
32:24suffering, his
32:24hour of
32:25becoming the
32:25sin bearer, his
32:26hour of drinking
32:27the cup of
32:27God's wrath
32:28against sin, his
32:30hour has come.
32:32John 17, Jesus
32:34in his high
32:34priestly prayer
32:35right before the
32:36arrest and the
32:37garden experience,
32:39when Jesus had
32:40spoken these
32:40words, he
32:41lifted up his
32:42eyes to heaven
32:42and said,
32:43Father, the
32:44hour has
32:45come, glorify
32:46your son that
32:47the son may
32:48glorify you.
32:51He's now
32:52moving to
32:52Calvary and
32:54nothing's going to
32:55stop his
32:56movement to
32:56Calvary to
32:58become the
32:58great sin
32:59bearer for
32:59you and me.
33:01An anonymous
33:02author wrote
33:03this, he said
33:04this, the
33:05Bible tells us
33:06that Christ was
33:07the lamb slain
33:08from the
33:09foundation of
33:09the world,
33:10that's actually
33:10Revelation chapter
33:1113 verse
33:128, and
33:13again, that
33:14sentence is a
33:15very difficult
33:15sentence to
33:16translate.
33:16This is one
33:17way that you
33:17could translate
33:18this sentence,
33:19that the lamb
33:20was slain from
33:21the foundation of
33:22the world.
33:22Do you
33:22understand what
33:23that means?
33:24Before God
33:24created anything,
33:26the lamb of
33:27God had already
33:28been slain in
33:28God's mind.
33:30Think about
33:30that.
33:33That means that
33:34there was a
33:34cross set up in
33:35the heart of
33:36God long before
33:37there was a
33:38cross set up on
33:38the hill of
33:39Calvary.
33:42God's
33:42sufferings began
33:43at the moment
33:44he planned the
33:45universe and
33:46tugged at his
33:47heartstring from
33:47the moment that
33:48he laid the
33:48foundations of
33:49the world.
33:50He knew when
33:51he created what
33:52was going to
33:52happen and he
33:53still created.
33:59The pain of
34:00the cross must
34:01have pierced
34:01right through
34:02him as he
34:03waited for that
34:04awful moment when
34:05his son would die
34:06on Calvary.
34:08How long did
34:08he wait?
34:09Centuries,
34:11millennia.
34:12Then finally it
34:13came.
34:17The awful
34:19screaming agony
34:20of crucifixion.
34:25And you and I
34:26have been invited
34:27into his
34:28suffering.
34:30You and I,
34:31we have seen
34:32his anguish.
34:33We hear his
34:34cries.
34:35We experience
34:37his struggle.
34:38We honor his
34:39obedience.
34:42For the son of
34:43man now enters
34:44into his
34:44passion.
34:46Let's pray.
34:47Father,
34:48my heart is
34:49overwhelmed
34:50that you would
34:53do this for us.
34:56There was no
34:57other way.
34:58We understand
34:58that.
34:59One must
35:00identify with
35:01the humanity
35:02in Adam's race
35:04to become
35:04the redeemer
35:05of those
35:06who will
35:06believe in
35:06Adam's race.
35:08He had to
35:10bear our sins.
35:10There was no
35:11other way we
35:12could be
35:12forgiven.
35:14He had to
35:15take your
35:16wrath upon
35:17him that we
35:18would experience
35:19your love and
35:19grace.
35:21You crushed
35:22him that we
35:23could live.
35:23love.
35:29It breaks
35:30me to
35:30think I
35:32caused
35:33this.
35:35And yet,
35:37by faith I
35:38believe.
35:40And by faith I
35:41enter into this
35:42and live my
35:43life knowing
35:43that it is
35:44true that your
35:45son paid the
35:45penalty of my
35:46sins.
35:47That because of
35:48him I can be in
35:49forgiveness and
35:50reconciliation with
35:51you.
35:51you have
35:52redeemed me.
35:54You have
35:55saved me.
35:56And not just
35:57me.
35:57All who believe
35:59here today and
36:00are watching at
36:00home.
36:04He was
36:04crushed for
36:06us.
36:09That we might
36:10live.
36:11We pray in
36:12Jesus' name.
36:13Amen.
