00:00Work hard, play hard, healthy body, healthy mind, face the future, fear no challenge.
00:12I strive to be the best that I can be.
00:18Work 2000, work hard 2000, play hard, be the best.
00:25Face the future 2000, work hard, fear no challenge, fear no challenge, work, be the best.
00:35Hey everybody, what's up? I'm Ryan Seacrest.
00:37And I'm Maria Santone.
00:38Now, if you've been as big a fan of American Gladiators as I have, you've probably been wondering, why isn't there a version that kids can play?
00:45Well, now there is.
00:46Welcome to Gladiators 2000.
00:48Let's meet the Red Team.
00:50Weighing 85 pounds and standing 5 feet 1 inch tall, it's 11-year-old Heather Haley.
00:57And at 95 pounds, 5 feet 2 inches tall, 13-year-old Michael Goldman.
01:03Coaching the Red Team today are Hawks and Silas.
01:09And for the Blue Team, at exactly 5 feet tall and weighing 91 pounds, it's 11-year-old Courtney Self.
01:15Competing with Courtney is 13-year-old, 5 feet 3 inches, 120-pound Gary Green.
01:26The coaches today for the Blue Team are Nacho and Jazz.
01:32These exceptional young athletes are pumped and ready to face each other in some of the very same games you've been cheering along with on American Gladiators.
01:41But the kids that have come here to Gladiators 2000 aren't just getting a physical workout, they're getting a mental workout as well.
01:47That's right.
01:47After each event, the teams will be given a chance to earn bonus points by correctly answering questions about physical fitness, health, and nutrition.
01:54All things they've been learning here at Gladiators 2000.
01:56So let's kick it!
02:00What do you get when you combine a couple of kids, a Gladiator running through an obstacle course, and a Cannon that fires tennis balls?
02:06This is some of the action up next on Gladiators 2000's version of the Assault.
02:10Now for our Assault, the Contenders are going to be firing the Cannon at the Gladiator coaches of the opposing team while they run the Gauntlet, trying to hit that target over the Contender's head.
02:19Now making things a bit more challenging for the Gladiators is the fact that we put three obstacles in their way between firing stations.
02:25We'll have to climb a rope ladder, walk across a balance beam, and finally broad jump from circle to circle.
02:30The Gladiators will score five points for their team each time they hit the target.
02:34Our Contenders will score ten points for themselves every time they hit a Gladiator.
02:38All right, let's put 90 seconds on the clock, please.
02:40And remember, the Contenders have to hand off control of the Cannon to their teammate midway through the competition.
02:46First up, Heather Haley and Michael Goldman from the Red Team.
02:49Running for the Blue Team will be Nitro.
02:51I don't know, Alice in Wonderland?
02:53Nitro and Gladiator 2000 land.
02:55Uh-oh.
02:55Are you Red Team ready?
02:57Very well then, let's do it.
02:58There goes Nitro now, 90 seconds, racing this course, the Assault Force.
03:06You can see Heather up there shooting like crazy, Siren cheering her on there, trying to hit Nitro.
03:10Nitro, if he hit that bullseye, he missed wide right.
03:12If he hit it, it would be worth five points for his team if he hits the ladder.
03:15Nitro climbing up to center.
03:16Oh, he gets hit right there.
03:18Ten points for Heather.
03:19Now the Gladiators really hate going up this ladder because they are an open target.
03:23You see Siren coaching along there.
03:24Nitro back down to the ground where he will race out in the open to the next firing station.
03:28Picks up his gun.
03:30Aims to the bullseye.
03:31Fires.
03:32Nope, didn't make it.
03:33Wide left.
03:3456 seconds left to go.
03:36Now Nitro's got to go across this balance beam.
03:38Now if he falls off, he's got to go to the back to the beginning.
03:40And remember, when he does that nicely.
03:42On to the third firing station.
03:44Well, he'll fire a soccer ball.
03:4645 seconds there, which means Heather and Michael will swap places.
03:50And Michael has a turn to fire Nitro, who's getting really cocky right now.
03:53He said, come on, come on, hit me.
03:56Here he goes, the firing station.
03:57He aims, he fires.
03:58Oh, no, that was close.
04:00You hear Nitro a little frustrated there.
04:03Here he's out in the middle taking his time.
04:05Wow.
04:05Oh, he's a little cocky there.
04:07I don't know.
04:0823 seconds to go.
04:10Fires the balls, didn't make him.
04:11And he gets to the buzzer.
04:1319 seconds left.
04:15Let's go to Peggy now for the official score.
04:18The red team earns 10 points for hitting the Gladiator one time.
04:22Nitro earns zero points for the blue team.
04:24We'll be back to see how Courtney, Self, and Gary Green do when they take aim at Hawk.
04:30So don't go away.
04:34These oversized red, white, blue meat puppets told me that I can add four seconds to my life for every step I climb.
04:44Cool.
04:44Now, don't get me wrong.
04:52I'm not saying that all the stuff these gladiators are trying to cram into my brain are things I really need to know.
04:59But if climbing a flight of stairs instead of taking the elevator is going to give the world a little bit more of me to enjoy, well, I consider it a public service.
05:13Welcome back, everybody, to Gladiators 2000.
05:24Before we see our next two contenders taking aim at the opposing team's captain, the Gladiators have some suggestions about exercising safely.
05:31Okay, Michael, let's see if you can lift that weight.
05:34Whoa, hey, hold on there, big fella.
05:36You're going to hurt yourself that way.
05:38Now, I can tell we need to talk a little bit about exercise safety.
05:41Of course, accidents can happen, but when it comes to physical activity, there's a few things that you can do to protect yourself.
05:47You wouldn't take a math test without studying.
05:49That's simple common sense.
05:51Well, common sense also applies to physical safety.
05:54Just like the things you do to avoid flunking the test, there are things you can do to avoid injuries.
05:59Warming up before an activity makes it less likely you'll get a muscle strain or an even worse injury while working or playing.
06:05Cooling down afterwards can prevent any dizziness you might get from stopping too fast.
06:11Some activities can be dangerous if you don't follow simple safety precautions.
06:15It's obvious that mountain climbing or skydiving are risky activities that require years of practice.
06:19But almost any sport or activity can be dangerous if you do it the wrong way or don't use common sense.
06:26It's safer to swim in pairs than by yourself.
06:29Wear reflective clothing if you're biking or running on busy public streets.
06:32Avoid working out in intense heat or humidity.
06:36And drink plenty of fluid to replenish your body.
06:39Lifting heavy weights the wrong way can cause serious back injury.
06:43But if you must lift heavy weights, be sure to focus the strain of the object on your legs, not your back.
06:49And of course, avoid situations where you must arch your back at all times.
06:52And if you do get injured, don't rush right back into any physical activity.
06:57Give your body enough time to heal properly.
06:59Otherwise, you could re-injure yourself.
07:01And healing a second time could take a lot longer.
07:03Got it?
07:04All right.
07:04Now let's get into that workout.
07:09We are back with the second half of Assaults at the Cannon.
07:12Courtney Self and Gary Green from the Blue Team running the course.
07:16The Red Team will be Hawk.
07:18Blue Team ready.
07:19You see, I got the big gun.
07:21Now I'm a big target.
07:22Assault time.
07:23Here we go.
07:25Now 90 seconds ticking away.
07:27Hawk to the first firing station as he sets up.
07:30Courtney, doing your best to earn points for the Blue Team trying to take aim at Hawk.
07:34Oh, missed it.
07:34Wide left as Hawk fires there.
07:36Coming to the ladder.
07:37Oh!
07:37Oh, and he gets hit there.
07:39Great job by Courtney.
07:41Hawk is out in the open, blinding this ladder.
07:43This is a tough thing.
07:44It sways back and forth.
07:45And you can't really go too fast.
07:47He's got to touch that red rung up there.
07:48He touches it and he's on his way.
07:50Oh, and he gets hit again.
07:52That's twice for Hawk on the ladder.
07:55Great job by Courtney.
07:56Courtney's got 15 balls to do it in 45 seconds.
07:59Hawk behind the next firing station.
08:00Aiming up.
08:02No good.
08:03Now, Hawk has got to go across the balance beam.
08:05If he falls off, he's got to go all the way back to the beginning.
08:08That's right.
08:08But he's looking good.
08:09Oh, and he falls off.
08:10Now, that's a foot off.
08:11He needs to go back.
08:12You can hear Peggy tell him, go back, go back.
08:14But he refuses to go back.
08:16So, I don't think that this is going to count.
08:18Right now, Gary is stepping up.
08:19But I don't know what's going to happen here because Hawk should go back.
08:22Look at him. He's just running across this thing.
08:23Keeps going.
08:23Should be hopping.
08:24All right, he's at the next firing station, continuing to move ahead as he aims.
08:28Oh, look at that one close.
08:29Shoots.
08:29Oh, and he makes it.
08:31Look at him.
08:31He wants to give up right there.
08:33Look at him strutting around.
08:34He forgets to put the gun down.
08:35There's more to this thing.
08:36Hawk, there's more.
08:37Now, whether it's going to count, I don't even know.
08:38Gary goes.
08:39Still trying to shoot at Hawk.
08:4113 seconds left.
08:42Last two chances.
08:43At the last station here.
08:44Oh, and he hits it again.
08:46Five four points.
08:47Hawk going around.
08:47Seven seconds left, and it's over.
08:49Hits the buzzer with four seconds to go.
08:52I'm not quite sure what's going to happen there.
08:53Let's go to Peggy.
08:54She'll let us know.
08:54Peggy?
08:56The blue team earns 20 points for hitting the gladiator two times.
09:01Hawk earns zero points for the red team because he failed to go back to the beginning of the
09:05balance beam once he had fallen off.
09:07So zero points for the red team, 20 points for the blue team.
09:12Our contenders have finished their first physical challenge, and now it's time for their mental
09:16challenge.
09:17The subject they'll be quizzed on is exercising safely.
09:20Now, blue team, since you guys won this event, you get to go first, and each question you
09:23get correct, you get one, and you get one, is worth 25 points to your total score, okay?
09:27Will it be question A or question B, blue team?
09:30Boo.
09:31Blee.
09:31Boo.
09:32Blee.
09:32B.
09:33Okay.
09:33We'll take that.
09:34Consonant, same thing.
09:35All right.
09:36To reduce back injuries, what type of activities should you avoid?
09:40Five seconds.
09:46Oh, I'm sorry.
09:47Time is up.
09:48We were looking for leaning too far backwards or lifting weights that are too heavy, something
09:51in that nature.
09:52All right, red team.
09:53For 25 points, answer this question correctly.
09:56What does cooling down after a workout do for your body?
10:02Replenishes.
10:05Replenishes.
10:06Replenishes what?
10:06Something more specific.
10:08Replenishes your fluids.
10:09Your fluids.
10:11Oh, I'm sorry.
10:11That's incorrect.
10:12We were looking for keep blood moving, help body recover from workouts, something in that
10:15area.
10:16Zero points for the blue team and zero for the red team as far as bonus is concerned.
10:20Maria, where are you?
10:21Blue team may be winning with 20 points, but there's still plenty of time for the red team
10:25to catch up when all our contenders face the grueling food pyramid.
10:28It's big, it's challenging, and it's nutritious.
10:31Stay with us.
10:32We're back for the second half of Gladiators 2000.
10:42Yes, we are.
10:43These two teams are playing for more than just the challenge of achieving a personal best.
10:46They're also playing for some cool prizes for themselves and their schools.
10:50But before we give away any of those prizes, we've got a little more Gladiators 2000 ahead
10:54like, right now, an intimate conversation with Siren.
10:57You guys having fun?
10:59Yeah.
10:59When we ask you to work out or play the game Assault or run the Eliminator, you might think
11:06it's easy for everyone, but it's not.
11:08Some people struggle and can't do it the same as you.
11:11I'm talking about people who are challenged differently than you.
11:14People who have lost the ability to walk or see or, like me, here.
11:18So what's the hardest challenge a deaf person has?
11:21Communication.
11:22It can be very frustrating, not understanding people.
11:25Deaf people are all different.
11:27No one's the same.
11:28I was born hearing and became deaf.
11:31I learned to speak before I lost my hearing.
11:34How should most people treat a deaf person?
11:36Spear yourself.
11:38Remember to have eye contact.
11:40Unless someone asks you to, don't speak loudly because it could distort your facial expressions.
11:45And if someone's trying to read your lips, they can misinterpret what you're saying.
11:50What about blind people?
11:51How do they communicate?
11:52I know they speak, but what about reading?
11:55There's a special kind of raised lettering.
11:57It's called Braille.
11:59By running your fingers over the bumps, a blind person can read almost anything.
12:03That's true.
12:08Not everyone can read.
12:09Some people have a reading problem called dyslexia.
12:13Even though they can be very smart and otherwise very capable, they have difficulty understanding written words.
12:19To a dyslexic person, the words and the letters are all jumbled up.
12:24You will meet people in the future who are physically, emotionally, or mentally challenged.
12:30And the best way to help is to treat them with respect equally.
12:36Now one of the things we try to teach here at Gladiators 2000 is the importance of good nutrition.
12:41For our next event, we decided to put our words into action.
12:44It's called the Food Pyramid.
12:4630 feet high, the Food Pyramid represents the six basic food groups.
12:49There's grains, fruits, vegetables, dairy, protein, and way at the top, the group we need the least, fats.
12:56That's right.
12:56This event is run as a relay race.
12:58Now the first contender on each team races up to collect a giant piece of food from one of the groups
13:02then brings it down to their teammate who must race up and grab a piece of food from a different group.
13:06The teams earn five points for each different group they can grab.
13:09If all six food groups collected by a team before time runs out,
13:13the first contender up to the top of the pyramid and hits the button will earn 20 bonus points.
13:18Yes, they will.
13:18The team with the highest score when time runs out will win this event.
13:22Red team ready?
13:23Blue team ready?
13:26All right, racing against the clock trying to get a food group.
13:30One piece of each food group.
13:32Heather going up to the top.
13:34Here comes Gary with the milk.
13:35That's going to be five points as he hops his way down to the bottom, tosses it in the barrel there.
13:40Texas partner Courtney.
13:42And on the red team, you can see how they're using the grasshopper motion.
13:46Yeah, that's Michael using both legs to push up.
13:47Michael goes up to the dairy, brings down the cheese for his group.
13:52Here he comes, walking right down the large steps, tossing it in, tagging Heather.
13:59Gary grabbing the fish and bringing it down there, tags his partner Courtney.
14:03What you may not realize is how big this thing is there.
14:06You see a great shot.
14:07This is a huge pyramid.
14:10You really have to work hard using all your body to hop and pull.
14:12Now you can see the technique there that the red team is using.
14:15They're using the grasshopper step, which is interesting.
14:17Courtney coming down with the fruit.
14:18Five points for the grapes.
14:1935 seconds left to go in the race.
14:23See, now you can see just how high that really is.
14:26The two of them going and fighting to get to the top.
14:29It's going to be close here.
14:31Reaching for the candy.
14:32Grabbing the fat, bringing it down.
14:3420 seconds left.
14:36Whoa-ho!
14:37Whoa!
14:37Look at Heather crashing into Michael there.
14:39What an effort.
14:40The pasta now is in the barrel.
14:41Tagging their partners.
14:42It's going to be close.
14:43It's just going to be who can get up there and tag the buzzer first.
14:46Michael and Gary hopping and fighting.
14:48They're head-to-head, folks.
14:49Five seconds left.
14:50Who's going to make it to the top?
14:52Michael hits the market.
14:53Michael on the red team gets it.
14:56Great race.
14:57Let's go to Peggy.
14:59The red team earns 50 points for being the first team up.
15:02The blue team earns 40 points.
15:05Our contenders have finished their second physical challenge,
15:08and now it's time for their bonus questions.
15:10If they get this question right,
15:11they'll add 25 points to their team's total score.
15:13And since the red team scored the most points on our food pyramid,
15:16they get to choose which question they want to answer.
15:18So which one will it be?
15:19Question A or question B?
15:21A.
15:22Question A, here's your question.
15:23Now remember, 25 points if you get this right for your team.
15:28A book or menu written in Braille is designed to help someone
15:30with what physical disability?
15:32Blind.
15:36That's right.
15:37That's 25 points for you guys.
15:39Good job.
15:42Blue team.
15:44Blue team, here's your question.
15:45Good luck.
15:46True or false?
15:47Speaking loudly will help most deaf people understand you.
15:52False.
15:53That's right.
15:5425 points for you.
15:55Great job for both teams.
15:57At the end of two events, the score is 85 to 85.
16:02But in just a few minutes, that can all change,
16:04because up next, we've got our final event.
16:06It's the Eliminator.
16:07And you won't miss it.
16:09Stick around.
16:10We are down to the wire here with our final event.
16:18It is the Eliminator.
16:19And if you thought it was tough on American Gladiators,
16:21wait till you see what we've done with it here at Gladiators 2000.
16:24The Eliminator starts with a climb up the ladder.
16:27Next, a giant slide to a row of hanging rings and our first question board.
16:30To add 25 points to your score, choose the correct answer
16:33by selecting one of our treacherous rolling logs.
16:36Next, a razor-sharp high-speed turn and a jump down
16:39takes you to the question room for our second question.
16:42A wrong answer here means a locked door and lost time.
16:44But get it right, earn 25 points and move on to quickly tag your partner.
16:49Contender number two has to climb over a row of hurdles
16:51on their way to question number three.
16:53Choosing an answer here means climbing the correct rope over our glass wall
16:56and then racing up the moving treadmill.
16:58It'll take skill and balance to get to the top
17:00where the final question board awaits our contender.
17:03Answer this question by picking one of the two swinging ropes
17:05and it's hang-on time for a ride through the barrier to the finish line.
17:09The team with the fastest time will receive a bonus of 50 points,
17:12which should determine who wins today's super cool prize package.
17:16You're so tired on that thing.
17:18All right, ladies and gentlemen, it is now time for the Eliminator.
17:23Eliminator?
17:23Eliminator.
17:26All right.
17:27Since both teams are tied, the blue team will face the Eliminator first.
17:31Courtney will start the relay race
17:32and Gary will pick up in the middle for the final push to the finish line.
17:36The push.
17:36Gary and Courtney, blue team is ready.
17:39Nitro is ready.
17:40Our officials are ready.
17:41Let's kick it.
17:43Ladies and gentlemen, here they go.
17:45Racing the clock.
17:46It is a race.
17:47Want to get the best time across the Eliminator.
17:49Going up the ladder now, going down the slide.
17:51Here we go.
17:52Here she goes.
17:54Courtney now grabbing the rings, going across upper body strength here.
17:59Upper body strength.
18:01You've got to use it, Maria.
18:02And you know whether they have it or not.
18:04We, I hate to say it, we both didn't have it.
18:07Coming up to question number one for 25 points.
18:09What should you do while exercising in high heat and humidity?
18:12Drink water or wear a sweatshirt?
18:14Yep.
18:14You choose to drink water.
18:15Correct.
18:15And Courtney does a great job over the logs there.
18:18Here she comes now.
18:19And now down over the hurdles.
18:21To question number two.
18:24What learning disability makes it difficult to read?
18:27Dyslexia or anorexia?
18:29She gets it right with dyslexia.
18:31That's right.
18:32Which is correct.
18:3325 points.
18:34All right.
18:36Tags the partner.
18:37Here comes Gary now to question three for 25.
18:39How does warming up before exercising prevent muscle strain?
18:41Stretches muscles or cools muscles down?
18:43Oh, I'm sorry.
18:44It's the wrong answer.
18:45It is stretch his muscles.
18:46No points there.
18:47Sorry about that, Gary.
18:48Here comes Gary now up the treadmill.
18:49Up the treadmill.
18:50Question number four.
