00:00I have with me ever-versatile and refreshingly candid Sahil Ved. He has entertained us with
00:18his performances in films like Hamti Sharma ki Dulhaniya, Badrinath ki Dulhaniya, Dil Bichare,
00:22Silence and a lot more. But apart from acting, he is also a very talented voice artist and
00:28someone who loves theatre. And now he is part of a much-awaited web series called The Hunt.
00:35This movie is based on the investigation that followed the assassination of former Prime
00:40Minister of India, Rajiv Gandhi. This is releasing on 4th of July on Sony Libs. So Sahil, first
00:46up, welcome to the show. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much, Heena. Thanks a lot.
00:51I'm really excited to catch up with you about this new role that you're playing. You're
00:55playing the role of Amit Verma. So, you know, this movie, The Hunt, what was that particular
01:00thing which, you know, drew you to this project? Because this is something really different from
01:05what you have done in the past. That's, you've answered your question. This is the kind of
01:10role that I've, I had never kind of, I would say, trusted with. Nobody had the heart to kind
01:20of cast an actor who's been playing comedy parts all his life to be trusted with a role
01:28which required a different level of maturity, a different level of understanding, a different
01:34level of, I would say, finesse as an actor. That's one beautiful thing about this part that
01:43kind of drew me towards playing it. Although while screen testing for this, I had no idea
01:49what they're screen testing me for. And I would credit my casting director, Kratar
01:56Sethi from Casting Bay, who kept everything under wraps and yet kind of briefed me in a way
02:04and pulled a performance out for me in the screen test, which kind of convinced my director,
02:10Mr. Nagesh Kukmanur, that he believed that I could pull off S.P. Amit Verma. And that
02:19too, with flying colors, I would say, because he was, towards the end of the show, he was
02:27really happy with, with casting me, with the conversations that we had. That's what I understood.
02:34He was really thankful and he was really happy. And so was I. I was so glad. I was so thankful
02:41that things fell in place and the serendipity kind of waved towards my casting in this show.
02:48I couldn't be, I couldn't thank my stars enough. You know, Sahil, how did you prepare for this role?
02:53Because this particular web series is based on a book called 90 days. So did you read the book
02:57first and then, you know, got your mind around how do you want to play the character?
03:01No. I started reading the book because what we were shooting was so interesting. I wanted to kind
03:06of get into it more. We started preparing in a very different way. Little, little nuggets of
03:17information kept coming from Mr. Nagesh Kukunur. He would, you know, every day, every morning of the
03:24shoot, over a cup of chai, over breakfast, over lunch. The only thing we would talk about was this
03:33show. And it was so much to talk about. There was so many, there were so many details. There were so
03:41many little, little characters and so many coincidences. It was very interesting to know
03:48from him. But, you know, every time we watch an interesting show, we're like, wait a second,
03:55what happens next? What are, that curiosity of wanting to know what happens next made me want to
04:03read the book? And my God, it was a, it was, it was better than any detective novel that I've read,
04:18which is completely fiction. Whereas every time, every time you, you, you read through 90 days,
04:26you feel like, wait a second, but this is all real. This, this actually happened. And that
04:34kicks you and makes you think, wow, this is all real. That this, this actually happened. And,
04:45and you keep thinking, but why, but how is it even possible that events like this could happen in
04:53real life? And then going into the set, living that, it's a completely different experience.
05:02Can't explain.
05:05So Sahil, you gave us a little bit of an anecdote about Nagesh Kukunur, how he would, you know,
05:10every day tell you stories in bits and pieces. Also talk to us a little bit about how it was like
05:18working with your other co-stars, Amit Sial, Bhagwati Perumal, and others in the shoot. How was the
05:24atmosphere like?
05:25Okay. Amit Sial and I have been friends from the theater. We did a play called Arms and the Man
05:34for Motley, which was directed by Mr. Nasiruddin Shah. He played Blunshili and I played
05:41the family Butler. And we've, we've traveled with that show quite a while. And we know each other
05:50from there. He's always been this senior for me. He's always been this elder actor, ever guiding,
05:59ever, what do you call it? He's always been, he's pulled my leg. He's taught me. He's inspired me.
06:07Everything that a senior generally does on this set as well. He plays my senior officer. He plays
06:17the inspector general of police. And he kept guiding me through, through the show. And he
06:28would sometimes come to me and he'd be like, and I really enjoyed that interaction that I had
06:36with him. And towards the end of the show, he, he was, he's a kind man. He, he, he put his hand on my
06:44shoulder and he said, good job. I'm like, thank you, sir. Because coming from a senior, it, it really
06:51matters, you know, someone who you've done theater with, and now you're shooting with, and he's,
06:57he's an established actor in the OTT space. And he's, he's really good at what he does.
07:02It was a lot of fun shooting. Yeah, it was, do you think that the final output is also somehow
07:07influenced and enhanced when you have this, you know, camaraderie with your fellow actors?
07:13Absolutely. Because all of them are very good actors. Bhagwati Perumal, I was about to tell you
07:18about him. I've watched him as an actor in a lot of amazing films. He's been an assistant director
07:26with one of my favorite directors, Mr. Gautam Menon. And someone who's come from that level of
07:33understanding of cinema, that level of, you know, he's worked his way up. And he's a, he's a, he's a
07:43man of few words. But when he does speak, he makes complete sense of what he says. He's not like me.
07:52I'm always speaking. I have a lot to say. I'm always yapping around. And then I have to go
07:57on to this set where there are meticulously trained actors who are very serious about their work.
08:03And, and then there's this guy who's come from the background that you just said,
08:08jumping around, doing a lot of fun. And you come into the, the, the periphery of such actors.
08:19It's, it's, it's, it's a humbling experience. It's, they're stalwarts in a way. If you ask me,
08:26in my, Marina's Roman, they're all stalwarts from where they come from. I also had an amazing
08:35co-actor, Danesh Iqbal, who, who, who's a very classically trained actor. He's also from the
08:42theater back in Delhi. And, uh, we became great friends and, and very accommodating co-stars I had.
08:55I don't think, uh, with the kind of films that I had done, I never thought they would be so welcoming.
09:02I do have training. I do come from the theater. I also have that whole artistic tinge to my, my, uh,
09:14being, but, uh, you know, you're only as good as the last film that you do. And you, you do get judged
09:20in this industry quite a lot from the last project that you've done, which is a little unfair, I would
09:28say, but applause and zeal, uh, applause and, uh, Sony lift. They kind of, they really believed in me.
09:36They put their trust in me and they, I'm glad that they did because, uh, it's very easy to dismiss an actor
09:44saying, oh, yeh toh comedy karta hai. You know, he only does, uh, these, uh, hero ke dost parts and he,
09:51but here they went back, they tapped into my true potential as an actor from the stage.
09:59And while doing so improved me leaps and bounds as an actor, because now I see hope. Now I see a lot
10:08of potential and, and I see so many other characters that I could be experimented with. And it's, it's a gift.
10:18It's a gift that Sony live and applause have given me and especially Mr. Nagesh Kokunor, who,
10:24who I would love to work with him again. Not just that he's a fabulous actor himself as well.
10:31And he knows how to, he knows how to direct actors. He first understands you as a human
10:38being and then he extracts the best out of you so much. So that while dubbing for the show,
10:47I was pleasantly surprised. I was like, I did not know I could do that. I did not know I could pull off
10:53a scene like that. It, it was a lot of fun working on this, on this set.
10:58I think till the age of 11, you lived down south in Tamil Nadu. Do you think that this background
11:04that you have, it kind of influenced your character in this particular movie?
11:08Of course it did. And, uh, the beauty of being, uh, uh, a cultural freak, so to speak,
11:19is that as an actor, it helps you a lot. I, you know, a lot of, uh, North Indians, so to speak,
11:27don't even understand the difference between Tamil Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. I do.
11:33And, uh, I'm so glad that I do because it's a beautiful part of our country. I've grown up there.
11:40And now I feel that my whole life, I had this, this question in my head, why am I like this? I was not
11:50accepted there. I'm not accepted in North India. What do I do? Finally, Mumbai, I found, which was
11:55home to me and nobody judged me here for being this multilingual person. Now I feel like my whole life
12:03has been a preparation for this role and whatever happens happens for the best because, and I'm
12:10talking to all those children who think, especially the children who grew or grew up in, uh, different
12:16parts of our country. It's a beautiful country. It's got so many languages. It's got, it's got so many
12:22cultures. Every two kilometers, the food is changing. The dialect is changing. The language is changing.
12:28My God. With all that being said, may I ask you if you have any plans to work in any South cinema
12:36project, if it comes, okay? Yes. Yes. If it comes, in fact, through you, I would like to request
12:42everybody down South. I am dying to do Tamil work because it's, it's unfortunate that I speak fluent
12:52Tamil. And the first Tamil project that I stumbled upon was Merry Christmas. And I got an opportunity
13:00to work with a great director like, uh, Mr. Shri Ram Raghavan. And I, my co-actor was the great
13:07Vijay Setupati. And they were both pleasantly surprised because Tamil coming out of my mouth
13:14seems a little unnatural. I don't look like a, like a true Tamilian, but I, I grew up there and,
13:22and that's the first language I spoke. So that being my first opportunity after having spent 15
13:28years in Mumbai in the Hindi film industry, luckily that was a bilingual film. It was shot in Hindi
13:35and in Tamil. And I spoke my own lines there. From there to here, doing a long format show in
13:43Tamil is my first. And I'm so glad because, because my, my, my, my father, after having moved
13:51from Tamil Nadu to New Delhi, my father would often visit South India and he would bring me DVDs
13:59of these, of these, uh, good Tamil films that he said, you have to watch this, you have to watch this.
14:04And he always had this, this, this, uh,
14:09Ichha, this, this urge that I work down South because, uh, he, he, we've grown up watching Tamil cinema.
14:19We've grown up watching some really amazing Tamil films, not only Tamil films, some great Talud
14:24Malayalam films, which are now quite the rage, but we grew up with them. And my father always thought
14:33we have to work in the Tamil film industry, work in the Punjabi film industry, do that because these
14:40are the two languages I'm really fluent in. I've spent 17, 18 years in, in Mumbai, and now I get an
14:49opportunity to do something like the hunt. And that couldn't have been a better opportunity for me
14:55to show off my Tamil. And through you, I would request anybody watching this or anybody who wants
15:03an actor who looks like me, but can speak Tamil. It has worked for Mr. Nagesh Kukuroor. It has worked
15:09for applause. It has worked for Sony live. It will work for you there. That's my advertisement of myself.
15:16Well, great Sahil, you are ever versatile. You are multilingual. You are a phenomenal dubbing artist.
15:23I wish you all the best. And I hope that we get to see you in South cinema as well. What would be that
15:28one advice for young people who are trying to make a big name for themselves in this industry?
15:35Don't, don't work towards making a big name for yourself. Uh, if it, if it, if it's for you,
15:42it'll come to you. Just enjoy what you're doing. Believe me, I set out from my house.
15:50It might sound like hypocrisy, but I set out from my house to make an, make a big name for myself.
15:57But believe me, that's not something that we should focus on. My only advice to all those people is that
16:05just be the best at what you do. It sounds like a very, uh, cliched statement. Everybody says the
16:12same thing. Be the best version of yourself. It sounds like an Instagram post, but it's not.
16:18It's actually the truth. If you are the best at what you do, they will come and get you. There's a
16:25very famous movie director who said a very beautiful thing that if I'm looking for a fat guy with a scar on
16:33his face and you are a fat guy with a scar on your face, I will break your door. I will come to you
16:41and I'll beg you to be a part of my film. I think that's what's happened here.
16:46I was the guy who looked the part who could speak a language and I did not get, get cast because I
16:57was this fabulous actor. I did not get cast because I could pull off certain tricks or whatever. I got
17:06cast because I fit the role. I got cast because I was the kind of guy they were looking for. Believe me,
17:14it's going to happen with you. Don't go out there trying to prove yourself and don't try to,
17:20you know, make a name for yourself. Don't work for, for being a star. Work towards becoming better
17:31every day, a better actor, a better singer, a better dancer. This goes out to every artist out there.
17:38A name for yourself will come from the love that the audience gives you.
17:43If they love what you do, believe me, the audience is honest. You cannot fool the audience with,
17:51you know, tricks. The audience sees through you, they see through your performances and if your
17:58performance is honest, you're enjoying what you're doing, they'll enjoy watching you and if they get
18:04used to watching you, there's no turning back. Great. Very well said, Sahil and I wish you all the
18:11best for the series and I request everyone who is watching this interview to go on Sony Live on 4th of
18:19July and binge on The Hunt because as Sahil said, it has a lot of cliffhangers and it's going to keep you
18:25hooked to your screen. So do go and watch it on Sony Live on 4th of July. Thank you so much, Sahil.
18:31Thank you. Thank you. Thank you so much.
