00:00Newcastle United have missed out on Brazilian forward João Pedro following a £50m bid made to Brighton and Hove Albion which was rejected and those fears of a Chelsea hijack of that transfer have become reality because Enzo Maresca's side have swooped in, agreed a deal understood to be in excess of £50m, a 7-year contract and João Pedro is set to complete his medical
00:30at Chelsea before joining up with the club at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States so that's a blow to Newcastle, João Pedro a long-term target I mean you go back to 2022 when they tried to sign him from Watford £30m all that deal was lined up and João Pedro wanted to join he even later admitted he was upset he didn't join Newcastle United but ultimately at the time Newcastle
00:59opted to go for Alexander Isak instead once that deal became available with Real Sociedad so it was basically a late U-turn on Newcastle's part and then now three years on João Pedro has joined Brighton, scored 30 goals in 70 games and again still very much admired by Newcastle but his preference, the player's preference as you understand it is he always wanted to move
01:26move to London if he were to leave Brighton, he was open to leaving Brighton, Brighton were more receptive to selling him particularly towards the back end of the season where he got his red card and a bit of trouble behind the scenes on the training ground etc but
01:40yeah it's a blow for Newcastle in some ways João Pedro a very liked target but what this is just my personal opinion when you're getting in the region of sort of £50-60m for a player 23 year old high potential don't get me wrong and could well do great things at Chelsea but he was coming in at Newcastle to very much play second fiddle to Newcastle or be that sort of versatile
02:09attacking option maybe play a number 10 will offer Newcastle something different which sometimes they've needed but in terms of what Newcastle's plan A will be it will be to play Alexander Isak up front Anthony Gordon on the left and as things stand Jacob Murphy on the right but potentially a right winger they'll look to bring in this summer as well as they've been
02:34it's been high on the agenda for a while this right wing position is something they've yet to strengthen since the takeover and it's got weaker in fact with the sale of Miguel Almiron during the winter transfer window so
02:47that really for me should be Newcastle's priority
02:50João Pedro would have been arriving as a plan B if you like so which Newcastle also need as well when you're looking at the hectic fixture schedule you've got at least eight Champions League games to contend with
03:05Carabao Cup once again FA Cup comes into things come the new year as well and then 38 Premier League games so
03:12Alexander Isak as we saw the back end of the season just gone can't play every single week he will get
03:19injuries and he will even if he is past fit to play he may not be at 100% and we certainly saw that towards
03:27the back end of the season and Newcastle were crying out for a real top quality alternative to Alexander Isak because Callum Wilson still
03:36sort of getting back up to speed he'd proven his fitness towards the back end of the season but when he was on the pitch didn't quite offer
03:43a lot and as it happens he is out of contract as I am speaking
03:48right now
03:50today June 30th so
03:52Newcastle will need to sign a striker or an attacking player
03:56João Pedro you thought was that
03:58perfect alternative but
04:01based on the money involved and things like that it would have been a very expensive alternative so
04:07Newcastle I think relaxed about the situation they'll turn their attention elsewhere I think the money involved
04:15probably
04:16they're comfortable walking away from that deal given
04:20João Pedro isn't
04:22like he's a good player he's not exactly that
04:25when you're looking at the 50-60 million pound mark you're wanting a
04:29Sandro Tonali you're wanting an Alexander Isak the fees Newcastle have paid for those two players
04:34I think João Pedro as a
04:37alternative option would have it would have been a lot of money for Newcastle but
04:41on the transfer front it has been very quiet it's been
04:45all of June
04:46Newcastle have gone without making a major first team signing which
04:50is frustrating considering how
04:52much hype there was around this transfer window heading into it Newcastle
04:56qualified for the Champions League that
04:58really limited the spending in the recent transfer windows and
05:03circumvented PSR and all that and that's not an issue for Newcastle that PSR deadline also today but
05:11there has been little activity as such in terms of incomings Newcastle have made bids
05:17the likes of Anthony Alanga
05:18João Pedro
05:19James Trafford as well
05:21João Pedro going elsewhere
05:23Anthony Alanga
05:25Nottingham Forest certainly don't want to sell him so I think it would take a lot
05:30of money or a lot of effort to get Anthony Alanga to Newcastle United this summer
05:38certainly not one I would envision
05:40happening quickly but James Trafford there's definitely
05:46a confidence there that that deal can be done
05:50James Trafford wants to join personal terms not an issue Newcastle again tried to sign in
05:56previously Newcastle's sort of scout list this summer but the shopping list is basically players
06:02they've looked at previously which fair enough they've done the research and it's just about
06:07striking that deal with Burnley 27 million pound deal rejected that understandable I'd probably expect it to go maybe at least another 10 million
06:17before we start Burnley seriously considering that deal that the figures were told 35 to 40 million pounds for James Trafford which would make him one of the most expensive goalkeepers of all time certainly in the Premier League certainly an English goalkeeper as well so that's a deal where you imagine is the furthest forward for Newcastle United I'd expect that to be done
06:46done I say that with a pinch of salt because it's all about Newcastle striking a deal with Burnley but Newcastle pursued this goalkeeper this player for so long there's definite confidence that can agree a deal Burnley have brought in a goalkeeper and it's just about Burnley newly promoted club will be wanting to get as much money as possible so I'm no surprise that the initial bid from Newcastle was rejected but I'm sure they'll be back sooner rather than later with another
07:16bid so yeah watch this space so yeah watch this space and we'll be covering everything all the transfer news gossip speculation and looking ahead to pre-season Newcastle's players back in training as of next week the non-internationals at least have to give credit to Tino Livermento for his efforts winning the under 21 euros with England but won't be back for Newcastle towards the back end of the month certainly a few weeks time at least so
