LIVE: Firefighter, Police Ambush In Coeur d'Alene, Idaho | Active Sniper Shooting Underway | L18G

#Idaho #firefighter #news18live
Multiple firefighters were attacked while responding to a fire in northern Idaho Sunday afternoon. Law enforcement from several agencies are on the scene of Canfield Mountain in the area of East Nettleton Gulch Road. The firefighters were reportedly shot while responding to a brush fire, Northern Lakes Fire Protection Chief Pat Riley told KHQ.

Riley told the Spokesman-Review some of the firefighters were hit. He said they were responding to a wildland fire that turned into an “ambush-style active shooter.”

Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels said Spokane County is sending air resources and support for the “active shooting incident.”

“This is a heinous direct assault on our brave firefighters,” Idaho Governor Brad Little posted on Facebook. “I ask all Idahoans to pray for them and their families as we wait to learn more. Teresa and I are heartbroken. As this situation is still developing, please stay clear from the area to allow law enforcement and firefighters to do their jobs.”

00:00How are you feeling about this overall from when you first got the call to just now from what you want to do?
00:09You know what? It's going to be the tough next couple hours.
00:15Yeah, absolutely. I'm hoping that somebody has a clear shot and is able to neutralize
00:24because they are not at this point in time showing any evidence of wanting to surrender.
00:30So as soon as somebody has a clear shot, I encourage them to take that shot and neutralize the threat.
00:37I've seen several lifelight helicopters coming in and out. Are there any other air resources that are being used at the moment?
00:44Oh, yeah. We have our Emergency Operations Bureau that is containing assets.
00:49And whenever a situation goes beyond the local resources, which this has, like I said, we have other counties that are here.
00:57We have federal authorities that are here. And we will neutralize this threat.
01:04I know we touched on this with the suspects. You know, we know there is at least one, but you said possibly others.
01:11Is it coming from multiple different locations that bullets are coming from that might indicate that there is one suspect?
01:16Yes. Oh, yeah. Yep. Yep.
01:18So it's coming from not just one.
01:19Yeah, it's what the officers and deputies are reporting up on the mountain right now.
01:23Have any officers been hit?
01:26As of right now, we don't have any officers that have been hit.
01:30Okay.
01:32Can you just confirm and list all the law enforcement that are here on the scene?
01:38Well, I have not gotten a list yet.
01:40Okay.
01:41But, however, if, I mean, pretty much everybody that's in this region, we have some Spokane resources that are here.
01:48We have Marshall's Office that is on scene.
01:51Bonner County Sheriff's here.
01:53Coeur d'Alene Police, of course, is here.
01:55Idaho State Police.
01:57But we have a multitude of resources right now.
02:04Okay.
02:05What we'll do is Lieutenant Mark Ellis is going to be one of our press relations here.
02:17And we'll determine what time we'll do another press conference.
02:22Or if the next one will just be a press release.
02:25So I'm thinking it'll probably be a press conference.
02:28And it'll probably be somewhere in the next three or four hours.
02:33Unless something significant happens before then.
02:36Okay.
02:39Thank you very much.
02:55Let's go.
03:11Okay.
07:22You pick and pay for exactly what you need all in one place.
07:52Okay,
07:55okay.
07:58Okay.
08:00Okay.
08:04Okay.
08:08Okay.
08:12Okay.
08:16Okay, we're going to go ahead and get started.
08:42It's approximately 4.35. Today's June the 29th.
08:47Everybody okay? Can you hear me okay?
08:50Okay, my name is Robert Norris. I am the Sheriff of Kootenai County.
08:54This information is very preliminary and is subject to change.
08:58We want to give you and the public as much information as quickly as possible.
09:02So at approximately 1.21 p.m. this afternoon,
09:06we received reports of a fire on the east side of Canfield Mountain.
09:11Fire assets responded to the scene and at approximately 2 p.m. this afternoon,
09:18it was reported that firefighters were receiving shots fired at them.
09:26We now have two deaths. We have an unknown amount of casualties.
09:32We still have civilians that are coming off of that mountain.
09:35We might have civilians that are stuck or in shock on that mountain.
09:41So this is a very, very fresh situation.
09:48We are actively taking sniper fire as we speak.
09:52This is an active situation.
09:56We have multiple agencies that are on scene from local and federal authorities.
10:03And we are prepared to neutralize this suspect who is currently actively shooting at public safety personnel.
10:13We are prepared to neutralize this suspect as quickly as possible.
10:18And that's really all that we know as of right now.
10:25We don't know who the suspects are.
10:27We don't know how many there are.
10:30So I know that it's very, very, very early.
10:37And I don't think that any questions would yield anything.
10:41But Chief, do you have anything?
10:45Was I accurate in what we were reporting?
10:48Yes.
10:50Okay.
10:51So we'll take a couple of questions.
10:53But I'd like to remind you that it's very, very preliminary.
10:56And I'm not so sure we're going to have any additional information.
10:59So why the two deaths?
11:01Are they fighter personnel that have died?
11:04We know that there's two deaths.
11:07And we believe that they are, yes.
11:10Have they been taken off of the mountain?
11:13Yeah, no.
11:15We're still in that process.
11:17You mentioned that there are multiple people that have been shot.
11:25Do you have an exact number at the moment?
11:27No.
11:28Nope.
11:29We do not.
11:30I was talking about the spokesman.
11:31How are you going about evacuating people from the mountain or getting personnel out of
11:36there who are being shot at?
11:37I mean, what does that process look like?
11:39Right now, we're developing a plan to be able to suppress these individuals' firefighting
11:47capability.
11:48And when we get that under control, when we have an opportunity to suppress that, then we
11:53continue our removing of people who are on the mountain, who are on for a hike, or public
11:58safety personnel, or people who live on the backside of the mountain.
12:03Yes?
12:04Do we have any indication of what type of firearms are being used in this?
12:08Well, it appears that modern-day sporting rifles are being used.
12:13It appears that high-powered rifles are being used.
12:16Yes?
12:17How many acres is this fire?
12:18I don't know.
12:19It started out as a half-acre.
12:20Do we know about how many minutes after shots were fired when fire crews arrived?
12:32We got the first call at 121, and we have reports that they were taking shots at about
12:402 o'clock.
12:41I don't know what time they arrived on scene.
12:43I don't know what time the firefighters arrived on scene, but we can get you that information
12:47at the next briefing if you'd like.
12:49How many engines were on scene when shots were fired?
12:50Do you know that?
12:51Three?
12:52Can we wait three?
12:53And just to be clear, the people who responded, they were wildland firefighters, or they were
13:04local firefighters fighting a wildland firefighter?
13:07City of Coeur d'Alene and Fugue Fire Wrestling.
13:12Yes, sir.
13:13When the shots were fired, were they at an accelerated rate, or was it a single shot?
13:16Oh, no, we're taking rapid fire up there.
13:20In the back?
13:23Do you keep referring to individuals?
13:26Are you referring to the casualties, or like even other suspects?
13:30Well, we don't know how many suspects are up there, and we don't know how many casualties
13:34that there are.
13:35Yeah, I suspect we'll have people coming forward that maybe are stuck up there that drove themselves
13:44to the hospital, but I suspect that would likely be the case.
13:47Do we have confirmation that there are people stuck up there?
13:51We, people are still coming off the mountain, so it would only be safe to assume that the
13:57mountain is not cleared.
13:59As of right now, is there an active threat?
14:02Absolutely, absolutely there is.
14:04Has there been a shelter in place order put forth?
14:07Yes, there has, and I would encourage all of you to tell people to stay away from the
14:11area.
14:12Do not come to the area.
14:14Stay away from the area.
14:15This is going to be, if these individuals are not neutralized quickly, this is going to
14:22be likely a multi-day operation.
14:26There's a question, so is the suspect in a home up there, are they, do we have an indication
14:33of where they might be on the mountain?
14:36Yeah, we, we don't believe that they're in a home up there at this time.
14:42So they're just kind of out in the open, firing?
14:45Well, they're heavy brush, well prepared, so yeah, they're, they're blending in with the,
14:53uh, their surroundings.
14:54Sheriff Morris?
14:55Go ahead.
14:56Did we, did you mention that the person that called it in is most likely to shoot her?
15:00No.
15:01Okay.
15:02No, we didn't say that.
15:03We said the first call was at, uh, 121 on a fire, and then we started receiving over
15:08our radio that the firefighters, firefighters were receiving, um, shots fired from the, the
15:14mountain.
15:15Sheriff, has anything happened like this before, and if so, do you think you and other law enforcement
15:20authorities would be more aware going forward?
15:23You know, this is an interesting dynamic.
15:25This, uh, you know, we, we have seen some of these things in a urban environment where firefighters
15:34were in a, um, urban setting putting out firefighters during civil disobedience getting shot at.
15:41I've seen that.
15:42I can't say that I've seen it in a rural setting, um, myself, but I have seen it in an urban setting
15:50frequently where firefighters do get shot at in, uh, you know, civil unrest.
15:55Yes.
15:56So do we know if there's one or two shooters?
15:59We, we don't know if there's one, two, three, or four.
16:01Yeah.
16:02We, we don't know.
16:03Just for the fire, uh, the fire itself, firefighting efforts, is it contained?
16:06Is it still spreading?
16:07What would it look like?
16:08Well, it's, it's gonna, it's gonna keep burning because we can't, uh, put a lot of resources
16:13on there right now, but chief.
16:14No, we won't put any resources on there until the threat is neutralized.
16:17Yeah.
16:18Do we have, like, a risk of wildfire?
16:19Say, is it high winds?
16:20Is that gonna fuel the fire or anything?
16:21We're at a high state right now in wild land, so it'll, it'll calm down as the evening progresses,
16:27but then it'll pick back up tomorrow.
16:29And hopefully this is neutralized for that.
16:32Sure.
16:33How are you feeling about this, overall, from when you first got the call to just now,
16:39from what you've done?
16:40Um, you know what, I, I, uh, it's gonna be the tough next couple hours.
16:49Yeah, absolutely.
16:51I, uh, I'm, uh, I'm hoping that, uh, somebody has a, a clear shot and is able to neutralize,
16:59they are not, at this point in time, showing any evidence of wanting to surrender.
17:04So, as soon as somebody has a clear shot, I encourage them to take that shot and neutralize
17:09the threat.
17:10Um, I've seen several lifelight helicopters coming in and out.
17:14Are there any other air resources that are being used at the moment?
17:18Oh yeah, we have our, uh, emergency operations bureau that is containing assets.
17:23And whenever a situation goes beyond the local resources, which this has, like I said, we
17:29have other counties that are here.
17:31We have, uh, federal authorities that are here.
17:33And, uh, we will neutralize this threat.
17:37So.
17:38Sorry, I know we touched on this with the suspects.
17:41Uh, you know, we know there is at least one, but you said possibly others.
17:45Is it coming from multiple different locations that bullets are coming from that might indicate
17:50that it is?
17:51Yes.
17:52Oh yeah.
17:53Yep.
17:54So it's coming from not just one.
17:55Yeah, it's, but it's what the officers and deputies are reporting up on the mountain right
17:58now.
17:59So.
18:00Have any officers been hit?
18:02As of right now, we don't have any officers that have been hit.
18:06Okay.
18:07Can you just confirm, list all the law enforcement authorities that are here on scene?
18:12Well, I have not gotten a list yet.
18:15Okay.
18:16But however, if, uh, I mean, pretty much everybody that's, uh, in this region, we have
18:21some Spokane resources that are here.
18:23Uh, we have, uh, Marshall's office that is on scene.
18:26Bonner County Sheriff's here.
18:28Uh, Coeur d'Alene Police, of course, is here.
18:30Um, Idaho State Police.
18:32But, uh, we, uh, we have a multitude of resources right now.
18:37So.
18:38Okay.
18:39Um, what we'll do is, uh, Lieutenant Mark Ellis is, uh, going to be, um, our, one of our press,
18:49uh, relations here.
18:51And we'll determine what time we'll do another press, uh, conference.
18:56Um, or if the next one will just be a press release.
18:59So, uh, I'm thinking it'll probably be a press conference.
19:02And it'll probably be, uh, somewhere in the next three or four hours.
19:07Unless something significant happens before then.
19:10I don't believe that I've never tried it before before.
19:15I think it was so easy to earn money from the phone.
19:18At this time, everything is necessary for extra income.

22:30So it's nope, like.
22:32It's.
22:34It's farther back up.
22:36Yeah.
22:38I don't want me to call.
23:08When I was on the scanner, literally the battalion chief goes, or whoever was leading the command
23:28goes, this was sound purpose.
23:31The fire people, it was just an ambush, like they just ambushed.
23:51The fire people, it was just an ambush.
24:02The fire people, it was just an ambush.
24:10The fire people, it was just an ambush.
24:22The fire people, it was just an ambush.
24:28The fire people, it was just an ambush.
24:34The fire people, it was just an ambush.
24:46The fire people, it was just an ambush.
24:50The fire people, and the fire people, so she killed the fire people.
24:58Okay, we're going to go ahead and get started, it's approximately 4.35, today's June the
25:2029th.
25:21Everybody okay?
25:22Can you hear me okay?
25:24Okay, my name is Robert Norris, I am the Sheriff of Kootenay County.
25:29This information is very preliminary and is subject to change.
25:33We want to give you and the public as much information as quickly as possible.
25:37So at approximately 1.21 p.m. this afternoon, we received reports of a fire on the east
25:44side of Canfield Mountain.
25:47Fire assets responded to the scene and at approximately 2 p.m. this afternoon, it was
25:53reported that firefighters were receiving shots fired at them.
26:01We now have two deaths.
26:04We have an unknown amount of casualties.
26:07We still have civilians that are coming off of that mountain.
26:10We might have civilians that are stuck or in shock on that mountain.
26:17So this is a very, very fresh situation.
26:23We are actively taking sniper fire as we speak.
26:27This is an active situation.
26:31We have multiple agencies that are on scene from local and federal authorities.
26:38And we are prepared to neutralize this suspect who is currently actively shooting at public
26:47safety personnel.
26:49We are prepared to neutralize this suspect as quickly as possible.
26:55And that's really all that we know as of right now.
27:01We don't know who the suspects are.
27:02We don't know how many there are.
27:06So I know that it's very, very, very early.
27:13And I don't think that any questions would yield anything.
27:16But Chief, do you have anything?
27:21Was I accurate in what we were reporting?
27:22Yes.
27:23Okay.
27:24So we'll take a couple of questions, but I'd like to remind you that it's very, very preliminary.
27:31And I'm not so sure we're going to have any additional information.
27:34How do you want to answer why the two deaths, are they fighter personnel that have died?
27:40We know that there's two deaths, and we believe that they are, yes.
27:45Have they been taken off of the mountain?
27:49Yeah, no.
27:50We're still in that process.
27:52Um, Ian Brown, Krentu, you mentioned that there are multiple people that have been shot.
28:00Do you have an exact number at the moment?
28:02No.
28:03Nope.
28:04Okay.
28:05We do not.
28:06Alex, I'm with a spokesman.
28:07How are you going about evacuating people from the mountain or getting personnel out of
28:11there who are being shot at?
28:12I mean, what does that process look like?
28:14Right now, we're developing a plan to be able to suppress these individuals' firefighting
28:21capability.
28:22And when we get that under control, when we have an opportunity to suppress that, then
28:27we will continue our removing of people who are on the mountain who are on for a hike,
28:32or public safety personnel, or people who live on the backside of the mountain.
28:39Yes?
28:40Do we have any indication of what type of firearms are being used in this?
28:43Well, it appears that modern day sporting rifles are being used.
28:47Um, it appears that, uh, high-powered rifles are being used.
28:51Yes?
28:52How many acres is this fired?
28:55I don't know.
28:56It started out as a happy group.
28:58Do we know about how many minutes after shots were fired when fire crews arrived?
29:05Well, we got the first call at 121, and, uh, we re- have reports that they were taking
29:14shots at about 2 o'clock.
29:16I don't know what time they arrived on scene.
29:18I don't know what time the firefighters arrived on scene, but, uh, we can get you that information
29:23at the next briefing if you'd like.
29:24How many engines were on scene when shots were fired?
29:27Do you know that?
29:29Three?
29:30We waited three.
29:32And just to be clear, the people who responded, they were wildland firefighter, or they were
29:38local firefighters fighting a wildland firefighter?
29:41City of Coeur d'Alene and Coogee Fire Wrestling.
29:44Yes, sir?
29:45When the shots were fired, were they at an accelerated rate, or was it a single shot?
29:51Oh, no.
29:52We're, uh, we're taking rapid fire up there.
29:55In the back?
29:56Do you keep referring to individuals?
29:57Is that- are you referring to the casualties, or, like, even the suspects you believe
30:05to be?
30:06Well, we don't know how many suspects are up there, and we don't know how many casualties
30:09that there are.
30:10Yeah, I suspect we'll have, uh, people coming forward that maybe are stuck up there that, uh,
30:19drove themselves to the hospital, but I suspect that would likely be the case.
30:23Do we have confirmation that there are people stuck up there?
30:27We, uh, we- people are still coming off the mountain.
30:30So it would only be safe to assume that, uh, the mountain is not cleared.
30:34As of right now, is there an active threat to-
30:37Absolutely.
30:38Absolutely there is.
30:39Yeah.
30:40Has there been a shelter-in-place order put forth?
30:42Yes, there has.
30:43And I- I would encourage all of you to tell people to stay away from the area.
30:47Do not come to the area.
30:49Uh, stay away from the area.
30:50This is going to be- if these, uh, individuals are not neutralized quickly, this is going
30:57to be a- likely a multi-day operation.
31:01Here's a question, so is the suspect in a- in a home up there?
31:06Are they- do we have an indication of where they might be on the mountain?
31:10Yeah, we, um, we don't-
31:13Go ahead.
31:31Did we- did you mention that the person that called it in was most likely to shoot her?
31:36No.
31:37Okay.
31:38The first call was at, uh, 121 on a fire.
31:41And then we started receiving over our radio that the firefighters- firefighters were receiving,
31:47um, shots fired from, uh, the mountain.
31:50Sure.
31:51Has anything happened like this before?
31:52And if so, do you think you and other law enforcement entities would be more aware going forward?
31:57You know, this is an interesting dynamic.
32:00This, uh, you know, we- we have seen some of these things in a urban environment where firefighters
32:09were in a, um, urban setting putting out firefighters during civil disobedience getting shot at.
32:16Uh, I've seen that.
32:17I can't say that I've seen it in a rural setting, uh, myself, but I have seen it in an urban setting
32:25frequently where firefighters do get shot at in, uh, you know, civil unrest.
32:30Yes.
32:31So do we know if there's one or two here?
32:33We- we don't know if there's one, two, three, or four.
32:36Yeah.
32:37We- we don't know.
32:38Just for the fire, uh, the fire itself, firefighting efforts, is it contained?
32:43Is it still spreading?
32:44What would it look like?
32:45Well, it's- it's gonna- it's gonna keep burning because we can't, uh, put a lot of resources
32:50on there right now.
32:51But, Chief, if-
32:52No, we won't put any resources on there until the threat is destroyed.
32:55Do we have, like, a risk of wildfires?
32:57Is it high winds?
32:58Is that gonna fuel the fire or anything?
33:00We're at a high state right now in wildland, so it'll- it'll calm down as the evening progresses.
33:05But then it'll pick back up tomorrow.
33:08And hopefully this is neutralized for then.
33:11Chief Lawrence, how are you feeling about this overall from when you first got the call
33:15to just now from what you've done?
33:18Um, you know what?
33:20I- I, uh, it's gonna be the tough next couple hours.
33:24Yeah, absolutely.
33:25I, uh, I'm, uh, I'm hoping that, uh, somebody has a- a clear shot and is able to neutralize.
33:33DR.
33:34Which-
33:35That would be easy to do.
33:36Okay.
33:37I can gotta add Mamala to that.
33:38This is phase 2.
33:40I could do this before what-
33:41Seems like a small bay there and into that.
33:42I could just leave a number or aived of neutralized guard right now.
33:43Could you pass up on that?
33:44Cause my eyes.
33:45Maybe another look for justaw-
33:46Im going down the light around it?
33:47My head's off.
33:48Terrible.
33:49I'm gonna try something years now.
33:51Oh, yeah the kinda luck.
33:52Die over girls is in.
33:53There wasn't enough credit where you were going to plan something else,
33:54but the new thing that could be done if you had one another-
